Despite recent challenges, St. Andrew’s community garden still available to public Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A local congregation again wants to shine a light on its community garden, and remind folks that it’s for everyone. The community garden at St. Andrew’s Episcol Church is located right across the street from the church in downtown Seguin.

Father Stephen Shortess says church members wanted to provide this gift for everyone to enjoy.

“We had a big kind of open field over there across Crockett Street, and they said, ‘what a wonderful thing it would be to put a garden here.’

There’s no real garden space in downtown Seguin and it is a wonderful place for not only the church to gather and pray and wander and sit amongst, you know, God’s creation, but also, a wonderful invitation to the community,” said Shortess.

reasons why they again want to encourage the community to take advantage of this space.

“It’s been a wonderful gesture by the people here at St. Andrews to really provide a beautiful space to the community and to cherish, really. I think, not just the holy grounds of St. Andrews, but the holiness of the wider community,” said Shortess.

While the space has been enjoyed by many, there have been some challenges.

Recently, some of the lights have been stolen, and there have been instances of dumping at the location.

“We’ve tried to decorate it much like the trees on town square are decorated. We don’t have the large hanging lights that drape over, but we have Christmas lights that go around the trunks of the trees that we are in the process of replacing. Garden, pg. 3

Seguin police officer arrested for DWI (Seguin) -- An off-duty Seguin police officer was arrested by the New Braunfels Police Department on Sunday evening for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

Jose Ricardo Zapata, who is a four-year veteran of the Seguin Police Department, was arrested at 11:43 p.m. Sunday. The 25-year old was transported and booked into the Comal County Jail.

A press release issued Monday by the city of Seguin stated that the Seguin Police Department has placed Zapata on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Seguin Police Chief Jason Brady says the department is committed to upholding the highest standards of

integrity and accountability among its personnel.

"Law enforcement officers are held to a higher standard, and we take this matter seriously. We will cooperate fully with the New Braunfels Police Department investigation, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken based on the findings." said Chief Brady.

Brady says the Seguin Police Department is dedicated to maintaining public trust and ensuring the safety of the community. He says incidents of this nature are thoroughly investigated, and the Seguin Police Department remains committed to excellence and transparency with the community.

School Choice Battle Heats Up In Texas (Austin) -- The Texas House got back to work Monday, attempting to hash out the details of a controversial public school finance plan.

Governor Greg Abbott is warning against a proposal to strip out vouchers, which would allow parents to use their tax dollars to send their kids to private school "I would just have to veto it, and we would start all over again. We've be spending December here, maybe January here, maybe February here," said Abbott.

Abbott says he hopes that legislators are motivated this time to get something done of this issue.

"I know one thing about the

house and senate, they want to get out of here," said Abbott.

The Texas Senate has been more open to the school choice issue, but Democrats and rural Republicans in the house have been unwilling to move forward with the issue in past session. Governor Abbott believes

there's a pathway forward during this current special session, but vouchers have to be part of that solution.

"They can get out of here in a way that truly does deliver positive results for families, educators and everybody back home in everyone's district," said Abbott.

The fight over what some call School Choice is why the Texas legislature is now in it's fourth special session. Democrats have universally opposed vouchers. So have rural Republicans. They worry about cuts to their neighborhood campuses in favor of private religious schools, which may not be available in some of the more rural districts in Texas.

But we also have some spotlights up in the trees that allow the paths to be lighted -- even at night. And then we draped lights along our fence. You see a lot of times at restaurants, larger kind of bulky hanging lights and we draped those along our fence. Someone came and while we were in a meeting the other night at church, someone came and took him off the fence.

I guess, you know, just stole them. I pray they needed them more than we did. But again, the garden is for the community, and you’re not taking just from the church.

You’re also taking from the neighborhood around here,” said Shortess.

It was a disappointing situation, but Father Shortess says they understand what they are called to do as a congregation. He says they will continue to make this a special place for the community.

“So, whoever did take things or who may have dumped TV’s or what not -- I would say first and foremost, please know that this Community has already

forgiven those things. We are going to replace the lights and we’re going to continue to do our part in making sure that this is a safe place for all people to come and to gather, and we’re going to continue to work to hopefully be that model of stewardship in life as a church in this community,” said Shortess.

The lights that were lost, or the dumping that has taken place, is not going to stop St. Andrew’s from continuing to make this a space for all to enjoy.

“We purposely put a sign out in front of our garden that this is St. Andrews Community Garden. It isn’t St. Andrews Church Garden. It is a place that is intended to be constantly open and hopefully, in that openness, it is a reflection of who we want to be. Going forward...as a group of people open with our hearts and our doors, outwardly facing the community, welcoming all people, and we just ask that people help us in cherishing this wonderful space,” said Shortess.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is located at 201 E. Nolte St., and its community garden is located across Crockett Street, just east of the church building.

Bulldogs Wrap Season with 2910 Win Over Austin College Chris Austin

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran defeated Austin College 29-10 inside Bulldog Stadium Saturday afternoon to end their seven game losing streak and end their season with a 2-8 record. With the win, Texas Lutheran secured their first home win of the season and of the Neal LaHue era - ending a ten game losing streak at home dating back to November 2021. The Bulldogs improve to 22-13 all-time against the ‘Roos - with Saturday’s win marking their third in a row over Austin College.

Texas Lutheran would play three quarterbacks Saturday as the Bulldogs would showcase seniors Seth Cosme (Angleton/Angleton) and Blake Lowry (Marquez/Leon) but it would be sophomore Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/ East Central) who would get the start. Bosanko finished with 130 yards passing and two touchdowns in the win while adding 24 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Jacob Wallace (Marion/Marion) led the receiving corps with 31 yards on the day as one of eight different Bulldogs that caught a pass.

TLU added 201 yards rushing to the air attack, totaling 427 all-purpose yards.

Senior running backs Jacob Forton (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) (81 yards) and DaKory Willis (Flatonia/Flatonia) (90 yards) both eclipsed 80+ yards in their final game as a backfield duo. Forton recorded the longest rush of the game (29 yards) and Willis finding the end zone on an eight yard rush in the first quarter. Following Saturday’s effort, Forton moved into fifth alltime in TLU’s NCAA Division-III history in all-purpose yards - passing Ken Gransberry and finishing his career with 2,698 career all-purpose yards.

The Texas Lutheran defense got after the ‘Roos freshman quarterback - finishing with a season-high six sacks led by two from Grayson Kowalski (Sabinal/Sabinal). The Bulldogs broke up seven passes on the day - often in pivotal moments whether it be in the red zone or third down. Freshman Troy Tomaselli (Castroville/Cornerstone Christian) recorded his first career interception in addition to six tackles. Senior James Gipson (Castroville/

Medina Valley) led the Bulldogs with eight tackles (five solo).

Texas Lutheran would get on the board first as a 10 play, 65-yard drive was capped by a rushing touchdown from DaKory Willis and a two-point conversion from Bosanko to give TLU an early 8-0 lead in the first.

TLU would score on their first drive in the second quarter as Bosanko would rush for a three-yard touchdown to extend the Bulldog lead to 15-0.

Austin College would avoid the shutout and cut into the Bulldogs lead in the closing moments of the first half as they would connect on a 38-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to enter the half trailing 15-3.

TLU came out firing in the second half, taking just eight plays to travel 73 yards and put the ball in the end zone. Caden Bosanko found Chase Patek (Victoria/Victoria West) for a 20-yard touchdown, the first of Patek’s career, as TLU took full control of the game with a 22-3 lead.

The ‘Roos wouldn’t go away quietly - responding with a touchdown of their own the following drive to bring the game to a score of 22-10.

Texas Lutheran would fire right back with a nine play, 63-yard drive capped by a Bosanko passing touchdown to senior wide receiver Yawanathan McKenzie (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian) to bring the game to its final score of 29-10.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Texas Lutheran honored its 22 player senior class in Senior Day festivities. The Bulldogs finish their season with a 2-8 record, 1-5 in the American Southwest Conference. Gary Lynn Bethel, 71 of Seguin, passed away on Thursday Morning, November 9, 2023, at his home. Gary was born on March 14, 1952, in Austin to Charles Gilbert and Doris Irene (Beard) Bethel.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marjorie (Weyel) and Charles Henry Donegan and sister-in-law, Linda Donegan.

Rainwater

Sara Darilek Rainwater, a vibrant soul who embraced life with open arms, passed away on November 9, 2023, at the age of 76.

She was a devoted mother, a loving wife, a great friend, and a source of endless joy to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sara lived a great life and will be dearly missed by many.

Sara was a lifelong resident of Seguin and was born May 9th, 1947, in Seguin, Texas.

She was the only child of Dr. Edmund Darilek and Lorene, “Cricket” (Baer) Darilek, of Seguin. Sara graduated from Seguin High School in 1965. She attended Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. Shortly thereafter she married and had two children Chad and Mark Walls with then-husband Gary Walls.

In 1989 Sara met Gary Rainwater through an arranged blind date by Allen Dreibrodt and in 1990 they married. Gary’s two children Travis and Heather Rainwater admittedly considered Sara as Mom. She loved them unconditionally and considered them as her children.

Sara worked 28+ years as a beloved banker at the very place Wells Fargo stands today. First, it was Nolte Bank, then Norwest, then Victoria then Wells Fargo. She was a true embodiment of exceptional customer service, and her dedication left an indelible mark on her loyal clientele. Sara’s magnetic personality made her a cherished friend to everyone and everybody. She knew no enemies and her sincere smile radiated wherever she went. Sara had the rare gift of making friends effortlessly, leaving everyone she encountered with a lasting impression of her kindness.

Sara’s love for plants, especially begonias, reflected her nurturing spirit.

She found solace in tending to her flower beds, watching birds gather at her feeder, and marveling at the grace of hummingbirds. The beauty of nature brought her immense joy and serenity. In the winter she also loved a big natural fire to keep cozy.

In the year 2000, Sara received a life-altering diagnosis of cancer.

Lillian Marie Ehrlich Lippe, age 94 of Seguin, passed away on November 7, 2023. Lillian was born on November 24, 1928, in Creedmoor, Texas to Elsie (Wagner) and Gustav Ludwig Ehrlich.

Lillian grew up on the Ehrlich farm with her grandparents, aunts, and uncles after her father passed away at a young age. She was a standout athlete at Lockhart High School where she lettered 3 years on the volleyball team and was Captain for 2 years. When she married, she stayed home to raise 3 sons. She was an excellent cook

and seamstress. She was an avid San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys fan. Once the boys left home, she spent 12 years working in the school library at Joe F. Saegert in Seguin. When she retired, Lillian enjoyed participating in a bowling league, bible study, gardening, playing card games with friends, and of course watching sports on TV. Lillian is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lippe, her son, Paul Lippe, her parents, and her brother, Max Ehrlich.

Survivors include her sons, Lloyd Lippe and Phil Lippe; granddaughters, Jordan Walker and husband James, Karoline Flores and husband Daniel, and Meredith Bean and husband Lawton; great-grandchildren, Paige, Brooke, Kate, Cassidy, Matthew, William, and Madison; sister-in-law, Doris Ehrlich; numerous other loving family members and friends.

Majority Of Americans Say U.S. Is Losing Ground On Illegal Drugs (Washington, DC) -- The majority of Americans say the U.S. is losing ground on the fight against illegal drugs. A Gallup survey found that 52-percent of respondents said they think the fight against illegal drugs is being lost. A record low of less than a quarter said the nation made progress in the struggle against illegal drugs, and another just under a quarter said things are about the same. Gallup suggested the shift can be attributed to rising drug overdose deaths, especially from fentanyl.

Study On Gargling Effect On COVID Virus (Houston, TX) -- New research suggests that gargling with salt water will keep COVID patients out of the hospital. Doctors in Texas found that patients who rinsed their throats and noses with a saline solution saw a reduction in their symptoms. Dr. Jimmy Espinoza with the University of Texas Health System says the salt water prevents the virus from replicating as quickly, but effectiveness of the treatment needs to be proven in larger studies to see if it works on all strains of COVID. Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Dry Dog Food (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning of a salmonella outbreak in humans that’s linked to dry dog food. The agency say, seven cases of salmonella across seven states have been reported with one hospitalization and most of the cases are infants. They got it by touching contaminated dog food, dog bowls or touching the feces or saliva of dogs who ate the food. The US Food and Drug Administration has recalled the Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dry dog food that’s linked to the outbreak. There are also other brands of dry dog and cat food sold by Hi-Pro Plus’s manufacturer, Mid America Pet Food, that are under FDA recall. The CDC recommends throwing out the food in a sealed trash bag to prevent wildlife from getting sick.

Scientists Create Chimera Monkey (Guangzhou, China) -- Scientists in China have created a first-of-its kind monkey with two sets of DNA, work they hope could help in medical research and the protection of endangered species. Known as a chimera [[ ky-’MEER-ah ]], the monkey was made using the stem cells from a long-tailed macaque [[ muh-KAK ]] with a genetically distinct embryo from the same species. The monkey with shining green eyes and glowing yellow fingertips lived for ten days before it was euthanized. Research on the project was published Thursday in the journal Cell.

Youth Co-Ed Basketball League Registration is underway for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Co-Ed Basketball League. The six-week league includes three age divisions: Grades 1 & 2, Grades 3 & 4 and Grades 5 & 6.
