Let the bidding begin, 2020 virtual hospice event to begin Friday tonight

(Seguin) -- Although there’s been a slight change of plans, the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation will still be hosting its annual Hospice event.

However, instead of planning for a night out, they are asking that guests plan for a night in or at least a night by their laptops, tablets or cell phones.

That’s because this year’s 2020 event will be a virtual fundraiser.

Continuing its tradition of fun themes, Elaine Bennett, chief executive officer for GRMF, says this year’s online auction event will be operating under the theme “A Celebration of the Ol’ Southwest!’

“Hospice Services is a touching and worthwhile cause and this year, we are celebrating 30 years of hospice services.

Last year, we celebrated Hospice in person at Pistols and Petticoats and this year, we are celebrating virtually with ‘A Celebration of the Ol’ Southwest!’ We are excited to have this opportunity to support hospice services with everyone virtually through our online auction and we hope that everyone will join us. So to register, you go to our foundation website at grmedfoundation.org and there, you will click on ‘Register for Online Bidding’ and when you get to that, you’ll come to a website with a little button that says ‘Get Started.’ Once you click on that, you’ll need your username and password and then from there, you will need credit card information and then how you want to be notified. will notify you if someone has outbid you,” said Bennett.

“We try to appeal to everyone so we have some auction items that include say concert tickets, to firearms, some condo weekend getaways, purses and jewelry and artwork. We just have a nice variety so I would really encourage everyone just to go in and browse. You can browse the items without actually signing up to bid so that’s something that you want to take a look at and then I also want to mention too that yes, it’s about money and bringing in funds for the hospice patients but really when you get down to it, all of this is for taking care of our hospice patients so if there is something that you really don’t need or want on our auction, we always could use any dollar amount that would be used for the care of our patients,” said Bennett.

All money raised goes to support GRMC Hospice Services “which serves many charity patients, those that are not able to pay for services.”

Organizers say part of the proceeds from this year’s event will also go to the GRMF general endowment to help with continued programs in the future.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Another local family is left homeless due to a fire. A fire ripped through a family’s single wide mobile home Wednesday night.

The home was located in the 2500 block of Friesenhahn Road. Seguin Fire/EMS crews arrived to find the trailer fully engulfed in flames.

The fire was extinguished relatively quickly, but the home was already badly damaged.

Firefighters say fortunately no one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported at the scene. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.

This is the the third Seguin family to lose their home to fire. Two families lost homes in a fire last Tuesday on Cedar Street across from Weinert Elementary School. Both of those families were able to safely get out of the homes. GoFundMe.com accounts have been set up for those two families.

Sand Hills VFD to host annual BBQ Fundraiser this Saturday

(New Berlin) -- New Berlin Volunteer (Seguin) — Sand Hills volunteer fire fighters will be firing up the pits this weekend. The Sand Hills Volunteer Fire Department will be modifying its annual BBQ fundraiser to a drive up and take home only event. This year’s fundraiser will be held Saturday at Lifegate Church.

Sand Hills VFD Assistant Fire Chief Carlos Chapa says while they would have preferred an in-person event, the fire department is excited to still bring the community together in support of its around the clock operation.

Chapa says the fire department will be serving its traditional meal with all the trimmings. He says plates are $10 each and will be sold while supplies last.

“It is barbecue brisket, sausage, potato salad, beans, pickles and onions and barbecue sauce. The only thing that we are not doing this

year is the chicken due to time constraint and having to try to do it in a drive through pace. We’re just going to do the barbecue and brisket this year,” said Hoffmann.

In addition to the plates, Chapa says county residents will also have the chance to purchase reflective address signs at the event.

“The reflector signs are designed for you to put under your mailbox or at your driveway. It will have your numeric (address). It makes it easier for us when we do have to come out and find your house. It’s also easier for the mailman,” said Chapa.

The reflective address signs are $25 each. Order forms will be accepted or handed out during the drive-thru line.

Residents invited to toss out unwanted household items this Saturday

(Seguin) -- COVID-19 isn’t stopping the city of Seguin from again attempting to collect your junk during its Fall Clean-Up Day. Crews will be available to help you get rid of all your unwanted items this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Seguin Events Complex parking lot.

Due to the pandemic, the city was forced to cancel its Spring Clean-Up Day and had to push back the Fall event from its originally scheduled date in September.

“If you have maybe some play equipment outside in your backyard that your kids don’t play on anymore, you can get rid of that or bicycles. We take scrap metal. We also take appliances but they must not have any Freon inside of them -automobile tires no larger than 19.5 inches and I do believe that there is a limit on that, six tires. Tires from local businesses are not accepted and also the only type of tires that we will take are from cars. We will not be collecting any tractor, mower, bicycle or ATV tires. If you

have any kind of old documents at your house that you want to get rid of, we will have a paper shredding service available there as well.

I’ve seen people bring things such as mattresses also just a variety of things you will find and we don’t accept things like brush and limbs.

Those are things that can be picked up on your regular trash day. We don’t accept hazardous materials or chemicals. No construction materials or debris,” said Sourdellia.

More importantly, Sourdellia says the free service comes complete with crews who are there to unload your vehicle all while ensuring your safety.

Again, a driver’s license or utility bill with proof of Seguin address will be required before being able to dispose of items.

Matadors host McCollum in Cowboys’ first 2020 appearance, Friday game to air on KWED (Seguin) - Here’s a dose of of COVID-19 sports reality - On the same weekend that a number of football programs in Class 4A and below finish their seasons with bi-district playoff losses, the McCollum Cowboys will take the field for the first time all year when they visit Seguin on Friday in District 12-5A-Division I. The Cowboys didn’t play a non-district schedule due to the pandemic, and they were forced to forfeit their first three district games against Buda-Johnson, Dripping Springs, and New Braunfels-Canyon due to positive tests that put the team under quarantine.

The Cowboys face a tough task finding their game legs against a Seguin offense averaging 39.1 points and 422 total yards per game.

McCollum hired Carl Klann interim head coach last spring when Matt Uzzell stepped down after an 0-10 season in 2019.

This is Klann’s second stint with the program; he coached the Cowboys from 2003 to 2012, going 54-54 with seven playoff appearances.

Junior quarterback Micah Rodriguez has been the orchestrator of that attack, completing 76 percent of his passes for 1,021 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just three interceptions while running for two scores. Rodriguez has thrown five TD passes in two straight games.

The team’s top statistical returnees include quarterback Sean Tejeda (727 yds., 4 TDs passing), and running-back Isaiah Leffler (585 yds., 3 TDs rushing).

Senior running-back Marques Washington enters Friday with 391 yards and three touchdowns rushing to go with 18 catches for 225 yards and four scores. Tristan Moreno has the been the most prolific receiver with 26 grabs for 377 yards and two TDs, and Kai Seidenberger has pulled in three touchdown catches.

With no game or scrimmage film available on McCollum since the coaching change, Seguin head coach Travis Bush and his staff are preparing a game plan with little to no information on the Cowboys’ offensive and defensive schemes.

“It’s a big unknown,” Bush said. “No spring, it’s a new staff, so obviously we can’t look at last year’s film on them. We really have no idea what they’re doing offensively or defensivley, so for us, kind of a generic game plan. All of our concepts, offensively, defensively, and special teams, have base rules that are built to stand up to anything. So it’s going to be just getting

Marion looks to upset No. 7 Llano in bi-district playoffs

(Kerrville) - The Bulldogs look to pull a 4-seed, 1-seed upset and knock off the No. 7 ranked 3A Division I football team in the state Friday evening when they meet the Llano Yellowjackets in the bi-district playoff bracket of Region IV at Tivy’s Antler Stadium in Kerrville.

Marion went 5-5 overall in Ryne Miller’s third regular season as head coach and snagged the fourth and final playoff seed in District 14-3A-Division I last Saturday with a 49-28 win over San Antonio-Cole that moved the Bulldogs to 3-3 in district play.

Llano, coached by Matt Green, is 9-0 on the year after a 4-0 run to the District 13 title. The Yellowjackets have beaten eight of their nine opponents by at least 16 points, with San Saba the only team to stay within

one score, 35-31 back in Week 4.

Senior quarterback Case Kuykendoll is the gas in Llano’s offensive engine. He enters Friday with 1,366 yards and 20 touchdowns through the air to go with a team-high 887 yards and six scores on the ground.

US Sets Record For COVID Hospitalizations (Undated) -- The U.S. continues to set grim benchmarks during the coronavirus pandemic. The COVID Tracking Project reports over 65-thousand people are in the hospital with the respiratory illness, a record high. It is the second consecutive day the record has been broken. The Tracking Project shows America also set a new high Wednesday with over 144-thousand new infections, and has now recorded over 100-thousand cases for the 8th straight day.

Italy Joins One-Million Coronavirus Cases Club (Rome) -- A European nation is joining the club of countries with over one-million coronavirus cases. Italy surpassed the grim milestone after recording nearly 33-thousand new cases over the past day. The country enforced a national lockdown earlier in the pandemic and last month started new restrictions because of a resurgence in cases. Italy’s infections follow Colombia, the U.K., Argentina, Spain, Russia, France, Brazil, India and the U.S. CDC Update COVID Mask Guidance Saying It Protects Wearers (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is updating its guidance on face masks. In a significant development, the federal health agency says that wearing a mask not only protects those you come in contact with, but also protects the mask wearer. The CDC statement also said that cloth masks can reduce the wearer’s exposure to infectious droplets through filtration. That’s important with COVID numbers surging in nearly every state and half of all positive cases turning up in people who are asymptomatic.

NY Limiting Private Gatherings To Ten People, Bars, Restaurants, Gyms Must Close Early (Albany, NY) -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is enacting new coronavirus restrictions.

They include limiting private indoor gatherings to ten people and forcing bars, restaurants, and gyms to close indoor portions by ten o’clock each night. Cuomo says these settings have all been identified by contact-tracers as superspreader events, adding they also match up with similar restrictions in surrounding states. The governor called on local governments to help enforce the new rules, including the NYPD, while acknowledging there is already tension between law enforcement and members of the community. All of the new restrictions take effect at ten o’clock Friday night.

TicketMaster May Require Fans To Be Vaccinated For COVID (Undated) -- Concert goers will have to prove they have received a coronavirus vaccine, when one becomes available, before they can return to stadiums. TicketMaster is reportedly working on a plan that would require people to show proof they have been vaccinated for COVID-19 or proof they have tested negative for the virus in the past 72-hours. It is unclear if TicketMaster would give refunds to those who refuse to get the vaccine or test positive. The ticket sales company says they are working with third-party health apps and independent labs to ensure all medical information being shared is secure. The news gives music artists and venues hope that a rebound is possible.

Library Dinosaur Science Kit Pickup

The Seguin Public Library is celebrating dinosaurs and paleontology all month long in its children’s programs and online. On Friday, Nov. 13, Children ages 5 and up can pick up a dinosaur science activity kit while supplies last, which include a dinosaur egg to break open, a fossil making activity, and a science booklet. Strey Marvin Valentin Strey, age 94 of Cedar Park, formerly of Seguin, passed away on November 3, 2020.

Marvin was born on October 19, 1926 in Wilson County to Augusta (Lenz) and Earhardt Strey.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church followed by funeral service at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Kelsie Theiss officiating.

Interment with military honors will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.

Koontz Marilyn F Koontz, aged 81 of Seguin, TX, was called to her Heavenly Savior’s arms on Oct. 30, 2020.

A celebration of her life is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Seguin with the Rev. Brice Mandaville officiating.

Marilyn was born on February 24, 1939 in Quincy, Illinois to Marion and Eunice Haselwood. She lived nearly half her life in Quincy where she had graduated from high school in 1957.

As a young wife and mother, she worked at the nostalgic Kirlin’s store.

She then began teaching piano in her home.

After Motorola moved them to Seguin in 1975, she became an active member of First Baptist Church where she played the piano and organ for a number of years, as well as in her younger years in Quincy, Illinois at Immanuel Baptist. She participated in choir and handbells, was a member of the JOY Sunday School class, and always had her hand in more than one Ladies Bible study at a time. Mom touched many lives through her love of music. She taught piano and organ to many young people spanning 30 years. She was also the accompanist for the SHS choir. She sang with the Sweet Adelines Texas Star and Alamo Metro and TLU choir at Christmas time.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Bill and Mary Kacal and Katheryn Hazel and her father-in-law, Franky D. Patek.

Survivors include her loving husband of 24 years, Timothy Wayne Patek; daughter, Hannah Patek; son, Cameron Patek; parents, Nancy and Frank Kacal; sister, Susan Stogner and husband Mitch; mother-in-law, Judy Patek; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other loving family members and many, many friends.

A walk through line visitation will be held on Monday, November 16, 2020 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. Don Ofsdahl officiating.

She loved cruises and her kitties, adored her “out to lunch” friends, her broccoli chicken and her Spurs, her puzzles and her books, but most of all her family.

She was a loving mom, grandma “Mimi” and great-grandma, and friend; and was a loving wife to her husband of 53 years, Leslie R. Koontz who preceded her in death on 9/12/2010.

Serving as pallbearers will be Cameron Patek, John Kuempel, Mark Dietz, Jeff Jubela, John Ullrich and Mike Strauss. Private interment will be held at a later date in the Faith Lutheran Church Columbarium.

Traveling was their favorite pastime; in their lifetime they had visited all 50 states, explored Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Panama, Alaska and Costa Rica. One of the best trips ever was the Caribbean cruise with her sister in law Judy Wakefield (now deceased), and her daughters and granddaughters.

As Jennifer posted on her face book page a few days ago, please remember, “Don’t lose the spark that makes you….YOU.” quote by C. J. Peterson. Jennifer loved all and in return was loved by many and she will be missed!

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Kathy L. (David) Slee, Barbara A. (Donnell) O’Brien, Lisa K. (Rick) Robbins, Alan R. (Stephanie) Koontz; 11 grandchildren: Ryan (Candace) Slee, Nathan (Missy) Slee, Jordan (Shannon) Slee, Jenna (Josh) Bichsel, Emma Ridley, Connor O’Brien, Dana (Stuart) Davis, Lindsay Robbins, Jessica (Anthony) Buitron, Leah Allstott and Conner Allstott; and she was proud to have 18 great grandchildren: Gaby Wagner, Gavin, Grant, and Grayson Slee; Lenora and Ellis Slee; Desmond, Elliana, Alizah, Conrad, and Calina Slee; Lennox and Lucas Bichsel; Hazelee Perry; Henrietta and Evangeline Davis; Calvin Samley and Melodee Allstott-Little; nephews, Dave Hild and Steve Hild; several cousins, other loving family members and many friends.
