Locking in the golden pecan; Seguin unveils latest city squirrel Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – When there is a chance, you take that “Chance.” Be sure to meet Seguin’s sixth squirrel located outside of The Meservey Group PLLC at 520 N. River St. “Chance” as he is called was recently unveiled as part of the city’s Squirrel Trail Program.

Jennifer Meservey, the owner of the certified public accounting firm, says her family is excited to introduce the larger-than-life squirrel to the Seguin community.

She also hopes “Chance” reaffirms what really matters to all of us.

“Chance is one of the cards you pull in Monopoly, and it can really send you all around the board or it can send you all the way back so that’s kind of why we named him Chance and as you can tell, he is Monopoly themed, and he’s got all of this wealth and everything that means a lot in the game. It doesn’t mean anything outside the game so I’m just trying to get the message

out that you know life is not all about making money. It’s about being happy and finding the things in life that make it worth living,” said Meservey.

Meservey says they decided early on to sponsor a squirrel for the program. In fact, that decision was made even before the company officially decided to move the company to this new building located just across from the Central Fire Station. Now 22 months later, that dream has finally arrived.

Making the decision to purchase the ceramic squirrel, however, came easy for Jennifer who says she had the perfect artist to get the job done.

The creative mind behind the Monopoly themed squirrel was Artist Jeremy Wallace with The Creation Company. Wallace says he is honored to have been a part of the process and looks forward to sharing his work with others.

Teatro de Artes on the hunt for the best tamales in Seguin

Tamalada competition set for this weekend Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Here soon, we will all know who makes the best tamales in town. Whether you make them at home or if they are served in a restaurant, dozens of tamales will be put to the test during the first ever La Gran Tamalada De Seguin, Tejas Competition! The contest being hosted by Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center will be held this weekend from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa, Teatro’s executive director, says the group thought the competition would be a great way to award bragging rights while also raising money for the organization.

“This contest is open to tamaleras de casa so people who make tamales at home but also tamaleras de restaurant so restaurant – two separate categories. So, the restaurant will not be going against tamaleras de casa and vice versa. This came about as a board fundraiser when board directors got together and said ‘what is it that we can do in our community but to also raise funds for the programming of Teatro and (the) tamale competition was something they thought. We have a lot of tamaleras de casa here in Seguin and we thought, ‘why not bring them all together and have a friendly competition?’ said De La Rosa.

De La Rosa says only 25 entries will be accepted per category and per division.

“So the different categories of tamales are going to

be your Meat Category so that can be your pork, beef, chicken or venison or any kind of meat and then you have a Specialty which sometimes you hear ‘oh I had a bean and cheese or cream cheese jalapeno’ and so that would be a specialty tamale and then you also have people who make Sweet tamales which I see more in Mexico than I do here in the United States but we thought if there were people who are doing sweet tamales, we’d love to try them as well. Those could include pineapple, blueberry, strawberry, raisins – so those are your three categories that you can compete in for this competition,” said De La Rosa.

The entry fee for Tamalera De Casa is $25 per initial entry into one category and an additional $10 for entry into another category. The fee for Tamalera De Restaurante is $35 for the first category and an additional $10 for other entries.

De La Rosa says to heighten the competition, Teatro has invited only the best of the best in judges.

“We have secret judges, but we have restauranteurs, we have chefs, we have community members but I think the one that we have that is most special is our very wellseasoned tamalera that has been making tamales – I’m pretty sure probably all her life and she’s probably about 94 years old so that’s going to be the true test of the tamales,” said De La Rosa. TLU to TV: And Everything in Between featuring Jeff Hiller '98 Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Seguin will not want to miss an opportunity to be in the same room with one of the newest up and coming Hollywood stars with ties to Seguin.

The TLU Alumni Association says it’s excited to welcome back Jeff Hiller, class of ’98 to Texas Lutheran University. They say Hiller has made his mark in the entertainment industry, with a prominent role on the hit HBO series "Somebody Somewhere."

Hiller is also known for his role as Mr. Whitely in American Horror Story: NYC. Hiller, who is from San Antonio, has appeared in various television shows including Guiding Light, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Law & Order; Criminal Intent, Psych, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Community.

He’s also appeared in the films Morning Glory and Ghost Town.

Just this past spring, he also appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show where he talked about his rising stardom along with his teaching of improv and acting. He also shared his experience with Kimmel about working as a social worker.

TLU officials say this event offers a unique opportunity to engage in deep discussions and gain insights into Hiller’s journey from his days at Texas Lutheran to his success on television.

The event will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at TLU’s Jackson Auditorium.

De La Rosa with the holiday season approaching, there is no better time to host the contest and show off those culinary skills of our neighbors and local businesses.

“We are wanting to crown the best tamales in Seguin. We are known for having lots of Mexican restaurants, but we have really great Mexican restaurants, but we also have wonderful tamaleras that are out of their homes, and I think it’s important to share not just the culture and heritage of our community but also our food. That is something that we don’t always shine a light on is our tamales that we have here, and I want it to be something that people come to from here on out to try our tamales here in Seguin and to purchase from our people here in Seguin,” said De La Rosa.

Pre-registration is not required but strongly encouraged as entries will be reserved for the first 25 dozens in each category.

The deadline to enter will be Saturday, Nov. 11, between 1 and 2 p.m. or again until all competitor slots have been filled.

“There was just the process of me bringing her vision to reality and of course, throwing some ideas in there.

Then the next phase was getting the squirrel here. Every bit of this was part of a process but once we got it here, they had the perfect covered area to get out there and it was in the middle of the heat (May, June, July). We got to make it a family fun event and just everybody’s support here at the office was amazing. I even had my kids come and help out with it, so it now gets to be a part of the city and we get to be part of something that we drive past all the time. So, the process was very fun. We had to get all the money and painted it and of course, the golden pecan.

She was insistent that we had a golden pecan and when she talks about what this represents, I really see this as your core values, your family – the things that are most important in life. Those are things you cherish, and you have closest to your heart. So that is what Chance is and that’s what he represents to me and I’m grateful for The Meservey Group for hiring me to come out and bring their

vision to reality,” said Wallace.

There are now approximately 14 more squirrels that remain on the list for completion.

The opportunity to sponsor a squirrel is also still available. The cost is $2,500 per squirrel. Each sponsor will also need to cover the cost of the artist.

Seguin Matadors honor seniors in final game at Matador Stadium Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- A final football game was played by Seguin High School seniors on an emotional night for players, parents and coaches on Friday night at Matador Stadium.

The No. 4 team in Class 5A Division-I Smithson Valley Rangers won the game on the field 56-0, but it served as a backdrop to the accomplishments of the Matador seniors playing in their last game before a home crowd. The season concludes for Seguin with a fifth place finish in District 12-5A and ends a program-record run of five consecutive playoff appearances by the Matadors. The seniors on the team will graduate with that record in addition to their many achievements on the field in other sports and off the field in the community.

Seguin running back John Jackson finished the game with 83 rushing yards on 18 carries. The senior finished the season with a school-record 1796 rushing yards. Jackson was able to set the season record thanks to the blocking of his offensive linemen which included seniors Cooper Neumann, Seth Cevallos, Jake Mahaffey, Kenneth Moore, Carter Dunn and Matthew Koehler up front along with senior tight end Jackson Pond and lead blocking senior fullback Holt Haas.

Senior receiver Creed Weaver turned in his best night of the year with

120 yards receiving on five catches. And seniors Donovan Cray, Landon Trost and Aidan Dilworth lead the defense with six tackles a piece.

Following the game, Matador head coach Craig Dailey talked about his 25 seniors and looked to the future for Seguin football.

“Next week, we’ll meet with our seniors. We have about five seniors with some opportunities to play college football. And that’s a big deal to us. We want to help them,” Dailey said. “And in the same hand, the rest of the staff is going to go with the young guys and challenge them and push them and use this a learning season on to what we got to do to go on to the next level.”

Seguin ends their season with a 3-7 record. The Matadors were 3-4 in district play. The Rangers ended their regular season at 9-1, going 7-0 in district. Smithson Valley closes the 2023 regular season as the District 12-5A champions for the second consecutive year under longtime head coach Larry Hill.

Following the game, Seguin seniors made one final walk across the field at Matador Stadium. The march reached the north end-zone and students were joined by parents, friends and families as they watched a collection of childhood pictures displayed on the giant video screen behind the end-zone as a tribute to senior student-athletes.

Micaela “Mickie” Urdiales, age 79 of San Antonio, Texas, passed away October 26, 2023.

Micaela was born on September 29, 1944, in Pearsall, Texas to Jesus and Marie T. Gutierrez.

Micaela is preceded in death by her loving parents; daughter, Victoria Ana Lisa Urdiales, and siblings, George Gutierrez, Gloria Cano, and Felix Gutierrez.

Survived by her loving children, Sonia Shook (Stuart), Sandra Mendoza (Steve), Belinda Villarreal (Eli), Roberto Urdiales, and Marisela Urdiales; sisters, Ernestina Lopez and Sylvia Lozano; brothers, Jesus Gutierrez, Jr. and Geraldo Gutierrez; grandchildren, Sofia L. The Reverend David Doerfler, age 74 of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Gregg

Brayden Patrick Gregg, age 20 of Seguin, passed away on October 27, 2023. He loved to weld, and fish, and loved to be with his family and friends. He was funny, smart, kind, compassionate, selfless and so loved.

Brayden was born on December 6, 2002, in San Antonio, Texas, to Robin Diane (Rigdon) and Christopher Charles Gregg.

Brayden is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Rigdon, and his maternal uncle, Patrick Rigdon.

Survivors include his parents, Robin and Chris Gregg; sisters, Mikayla Gregg (Sebastian Hernandez) and Makenzie Gregg (Roy Rincon); brother, Xander Gregg; maternal grandmother, Kathryn Rigdon; paternal grandparents, Charles and Susanne Gregg; a niece and nephews, Noah Hernandez, Jayce Rincon, Lincoln Hernandez and Elise Hernandez; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins other loving family member and many friends that have become his family as well.

Oates

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. James Louis Oates, who unexpectedly left us on October 24, 2023. Known to many as “Goat”, he was born on July 3, 1957. James was an individual of authenticity, generosity, trustworthiness, and an affinity for fun. He was a simple soul but was a rich man because everybody he touched with love, loved him in return.

His radiant personality shone through in his devotion to his family and friends, a legacy that will live on.

James most recently had a respectable career at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, proudly retiring in 2022. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver. He spent countless hours rebuilding motors, fixing cars, and building things. He enjoyed the time spent in Wilburn Brown’s garage during the 1980’s building the awardwinning tractor pull truck “Fantasy”. His many years as a truck driver were recognized as accident free, quite an accomplishment for all the miles he traveled across the country. His tireless work ethic was an example to all who knew him. Emphasizing the importance of a job done right, he passed this valuable lesson on to his children, teaching them about the gratification and rewards of hard work. It was during his career at Structural Metals Inc. that he was introduced to his lifelong friends and brothers including Henry “Tequila” Mertz, Ernest “Cowboy” Neumann, Reyes “Chainsaw”

Castenalloz, Timothy “Dancing Bear” Sczech, and Larry “Gear Jammer” Jahns. Ultimately these men and their families meshed together creating an unbelievably strong, lifelong example of brotherly love and what it truly means to be a family.

James met the love of his life, Patty McFarland in 2007. The couple shared a vivacious love for one another that was like no other. They were most happy just being together and shared a love for animals, dancing, country music, good food, their family, and friends. Anyone that knew of James and Patty knew that they were each other’s soul mates. June 15, 2013, Patty unexpectedly suffered a major stroke and passed away leaving a void in James’ heart that many could agree would never be filled.

James is survived by his mother, Nellie Oates, his devoted sister, Linda and husband Allan Trial and nephew Scott Trial. His two cherished children; his daughter, Jennifer Horne and husband Glen Horne and his son, Christopher Oates and fiancé April Ferrell. His beloved granddaughter, Presley Hirsch was undoubtedly the apple of his eye. James leaves behind a brother, JJ Edwards. James also loved another brother, David McFarland and his wife Linda. Their children Cheyenne and Hunter were very dear to him and he looked after them as any good uncle should. James was predeceased by his father, Samuel Louis Oates.

The loss of James leaves a void that can never be filled. His authenticity and generosity made every interaction with him feel genuine and warm. He will be dearly missed, but his lessons, his love and his legacy will persist in the hearts of those he left behind. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.

Whitney Robert Reese, USAF (Ret.), age 76 of Seguin, passed away on November 1, 2023. Whitney was born on October 6, 1947, in McAllen, Texas to Betty Jean (Hartford) and Charles Robert Reese.

Whitney graduated from William Adams High School in Alice, Texas, in 1967. He played football and loved hunting and fishing with his mom. After graduation, he met the love of his life, Carol Caron, and they married on February 14, 1969. He joined the United States Air Force and became an airplane mechanic.

Whitney and Carol enjoyed 54 loving years of marriage in which they had four children, ten grandchildren, and several foster children they nurtured and brought up loving the Lord. Whitney accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at age 20. He served the Lord faithfully in the church by serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, security, children’s minister, young adult ministries, and others.

He proudly and faithfully served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. Throughout his life, he enjoyed mentoring and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish, shoot, work on cars, and many other life lessons.

Whitney is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Grace Victoria.

Survivors include his loving wife, Carol (Caron) Reese; brother, Donnie Reese; sister, Sandy Reese; children, Michael Reese, Michelle (Reese) Dorrow, Melinda (Reese)Ramzi, and Matthew Reese; grandchildren, Rebekah (Dorrow) Rodriguez and husband Isaac, Samuel Dorrow, Elijah Dorrow, Katie Dreibrodt, Julie Dreibrodt, Lillie Reese, Amira Ramzi, Aaliyah Ramzi, and Layla Ramzi.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Graveside services and interment with full military honors will be held at San Geronimo Cemetery on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

TN Trans Youths Ask SCOTUS To Block State Ban On Transition Care (Nashville, TN) -- Three transgender youths in Tennessee are asking the Supreme Court to block the state’s ban on certain forms of transition health care for minors. A petition filed Wednesday by them, their parents and a Tennessee doctor argues that the state law violates the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause and discriminates against transgender youths by denying them access to certain medical treatments that may still be available to others. If the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case, it would be the first time it considered a restriction on transition care.

FDA Expands Eye Drops Recall (Washington, DC) -- The FDA says more eye drops are being recalled. On Wednesday, the Ohio-headquartered pharmaceutical company Cardinal Health announced it was recalling its Rugby brand eye drops after it received reports of burning eyes, blurry vision and vision loss. Earlier this week, the FDA warned against using 27 different brands of generic eye drops after inspectors discovered bacteria in the facility that made the products. The eye drops have since been pulled from store shelves.

Jury Awards Millions For Roundup (San Diego, CA) -- A San Diego jury has awarded 332-million dollars to a Carlsbad man who suffers from cancer believed to be brought on by Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup. Monsanto, the parent company now owned by Bayer, was found responsible for a rare form of T-cell lymphoma in 57-year-old Mike Dennis after decades of use of the product. Dennis’ lawyer says Glyphosate damages DNA when absorbed through the skin and ultimately causes non-Hodgin’s lymphoma. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website says there are no risks of concern to human health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label.

AK Reports Spike In HIV Cases (Anchorage, AK) -- Health officials are reporting a surge in the number of HIV cases in Alaska. The Alaska AIDS Assistance Association, also known as the Four A’s, said in a news conference yesterday the state has seen more positive HIV tests during the last year and a half than over the entire last decade. In Anchorage, officials say the increase in cases has been “exponential.” The state is launching a new project aimed at addressing the increase.

North Pole Stroll The North Pole Stroll will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2 in downtown Seguin.
