(Seguin) -- Surprise after surprise is how Jill Nash, the new executive director for the Seguin Education Foundation, describes her first experience in handing out grant money to local teachers and their classrooms.

On Thursday morning, a large gathering of SEF board members, school officials, and members of the Seguin High School Matador Band traveled across the district surprising those teachers who not only applied for the grant but who have spent some time dreaming of how they wanted to enhance learning for all students.

Nash says the SEF SurPRIZE Patrol is the most exciting part of ensuring that those innovative tools and curriculum that aren’t covered by the regular school budget make it into the hands of teachers who are willing to go that extra mile. She says thanks to fundraising and community contributions, over $60,000 was again presented to various classrooms.

Sign-up still available for youth disc golf clinic, tourney

(Seguin) -- You’re never too young to learn the game of disc golf. The city of Seguin will be hosting its Jr. Squirrels Youth Disc Golf Clinic & Tournament this Saturday at the Max Starcke Park East big pavilion beginning with checkin at 9 a.m.. The clinic starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by a

shotgun start Par 2 - 9 Hole tournament. Parent/guardian is required as caddie. Co-ed ages eligible include 8-10, 1112, 13-15, and 16-17. The cost is $40. Prizes will be awarded to the top boy and girl finishers in each age division. Details are available by calling 830-401-2480.

This latest round of grants was also made extra special thanks to new money that was donated to the SEF. Explaining the legacy gift that has been donated by the Blumberg Family was SEF Board President Debbie Magin. Magin says the inaugural grant made to the Seguin High School Naval Jr. ROTC Program is the first of many.

“We are very fortunate to receive a special gift from a foundation that was closing down and they gave the money to the Seguin Education Foundation and all they were requesting was for us to recognize their mom and dad. While they were very special people in Seguin, it’s Roland and Jane Blumberg. So, we have decided to create the Roland and Jane Blumberg STEM Grant and you are the first recipients of that grant and we are excited about your project and I know that if Mr. and Mrs. Blumberg were alive and seeing this, they would be thrilled to see what you were going to be doing with the students and this drone project,” said Magin.

Sharing his excitement and explaining more about this drone project was Raul Mendoza, the Naval Science instructor at SHS. “The grant is to start up our Matador Drone Operators Group for our brand new drone program and we want to concentrate on precision flying with the drones. It’s a huge honor. I can’t wait to share this with the cadets. They don’t know yet. So, I’m very excited to let my class know right now about this huge honor. Thank you to the Blumberg’s for us to be the first ones. It’s such a huge honor,” said Mendoza.

After awarding the drone program $4,999, SEF board members marched down the hallway surprising the construction trades department with another large round of SEF dollars totaling, $4,985.

“We applied for a grant to help us kind of further our construction trades program and it was so that we could add specifically more real world components for electrical, plumbing and commercial framing.

Our kids have been doing a lot of wood framing the last year and a half or so and now there’s opportunities to use metal and more commercial techniques but those are specific tools,” said Rice.

Rice says the grant comes at a perfect time for the high school program. He says thanks to local Businessman Carlos Moreno, the program, over the last few months, has branched out by launching a construction trades booster club.

He says this community partnership is helping to redefine the scope of the program and what it can offer the students. He says the education grant is just more evidence that the community of Seguin supports its kids.

“There’s very few 15 year olds that know I want to be an electrician but if they get the opportunity to experience that type of work as an electrician or doing some HVAC, then through expanding the horizons, letting them know there are other opportunities out there,

we have so many opportunities for kids in Seguin to leave high school and either go to a trade school, go into the Texas FAME program where after two years of working while you learn, no loans, no debt, they can be making 70 grand a year in our manufacturing around here. We’ve got apprenticeships for electrical, apprenticeships for plumbing. We are working on finalizing some in the HVAC industry, different people, different partners -- if you are reading this or hearing about it -- please get in touch with me and let me know if you are interested in hiring high school kids. We have 10 graduates just out of the construction trades program this year and my goal is to make sure by Spring Break, they all have a school that they are admitted to, an apprenticeship program or a job that they are headed for,” said Rice.

This year’s SurPRIZE Patrol awarded a total of 18 grants to various classrooms across the Seguin ISD. A majority of funds for the annual grants are raised during the SEF’s annual Mardi Gras fundraiser. This year’s event is scheduled for Feb. 22, 2024. Bulldogs Slated Seventh in SCAC Preseason Poll Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran has been picked seventh in the SCAC Preseason Poll which was announced Thursday and reflects the votes of the league’s head coaches. The Bulldogs finished seventh in the conference standings after going 5-11 in SCAC play in 2022-23.

St. Thomas, who enters the season receiving votes in the D3hoops. com Top 25 Poll, received six first place votes and totaled 62 points to edge out Trinity - who received two first place votes, for the top spot in the 2023-24 preseason poll. Colorado College was picked third with 48 points, Schreiner - last year’s SCAC Tournament champion - was picked fourth while receiving the final first place vote - followed by Centenary, Southwestern and TLU. Dallas and Austin College rounded out the remainder of the poll.

Texas Lutheran was picked sixth in the 2022-23 preseason poll.

Three starters and right lettermen return from the Bulldogs’ 202223 team, which posted a 10-15 overall record. Returners include AllSCAC standouts Xavier Phillips (Austin/Dripping Springs), Isaac Orozco (Helotes/O’Connor), and Mason Wallace (San Antonio/ Judson). Austin Falke and his staff added eight freshmen, including local prospect Carter Lewis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), and junior

transfer Semaj Edwards (Lanham, MD/Oak Hill/Friends University) over the offseason.

Phillips played in 23 games (22 starts) this season - leading the team in scoring (13.4 ppg) and ranking second in steals (33) and third in rebounds (4.0 rpg). Phillips reached double figures in scoring 18 times throughout the 2022-23 season.

Orozco played in all 25 games with 21 starts and led the SCAC in assists (3.3 apg), led the Bulldogs in minutes (27.8 mpg), and steals (43).

He registered a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (82 assists, 48 turnovers) finishing fourth in the SCAC in the category.

Wallace played in all 25 games (five starts) and ranks second on the team in blocks (0.4), third in minutes (26.8 mpg), fourth in scoring (8.6 ppg) and rebounds (3.1 rpg). Wallace reached double figures eight times as a freshman including a career-high 24 points against Centenary.

Johnnie Mae Morgan, of Seguin, died October 24, 2023 at the age of 87 years old. Survivors include sons: Cornel Cunningham and Darryl L. Cunningham Sr;Daughters: Cheryl Cunningham, Carmella (Rita) Cunningham, Jennifer Morgan, Martha Grant and Dian Mueller; and Brother J.T. Dorothy Lee “Dottie” Vogel Kallies, age 88 of Belmont, passed away on October 28, 2023. Dorothy was born on November 9, 1934, in New Braunfels, Texas to Virginia Margarite (Wagner) and Herbert Vogel.

Upon her mother’s death at age 6, she was raised by her great-aunt Fannie Ellis and great-uncle Howell Ellis in eastern Guadalupe County. She attended Dowdy School until it closed, and then graduated from Seguin High School in 1953. In June 1953, she married Leslie “Pete” Kallies. They had three children: Mona, Basil, and Jeffery Kallies.

Dottie was a homemaker, teacher’s aide, sales clerk at Williams Drug Store, and insurance agent for Hermann Sons Life, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, canning, baking, and making jellies as well as raising chickens, turkeys, and guinea hens. She was a 40-year breast cancer survivor.

Dottie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Leslie “Pete” Kallies, parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arnold and Frances Kallies, step-mother-in-law, Clara Kallies, great-aunt and great-uncle, grandparents, brother Herbert Vogel Jr. and wife Alma, and nephew Billy Wayne Vogel.

Brayden Patrick Gregg, age 20 of Seguin, passed away on October 27, 2023. He loved to weld, and fish, and loved to be with his family and friends. He was funny, smart, kind, compassionate, selfless and so loved.

Brayden was born on December 6, 2002, in San Antonio, Texas, to Robin Diane (Rigdon) and Christopher Charles Gregg.

Brayden is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Rigdon, and his maternal uncle, Patrick Rigdon.

Whitney Robert Reese, USAF (Ret.), age 76 of Seguin, passed away on November 1, 2023. Whitney was born on October 6, 1947, in McAllen, Texas to Betty Jean (Hartford) and Charles Robert Reese.

Whitney graduated from William Adams High School in Alice, Texas, in 1967. He played football and loved hunting and fishing with his mom. After graduation, he met the love of his life, Carol Caron, and they married on February 14, 1969. He joined the United States Air Force and became an airplane mechanic.

Whitney and Carol enjoyed 54 loving years of marriage in which they had four children, ten grandchildren, and several foster children they nurtured and brought up loving the Lord. Whitney accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at age 20. He served the Lord faithfully in the church by serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, security, children’s minister, young adult ministries, and others.

He proudly and faithfully served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. Throughout his life, he enjoyed mentoring and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish, shoot, work on cars, and many other life lessons.

Whitney is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Grace Victoria.

Survivors include his loving wife, Carol (Caron) Reese; brother, Donnie Reese; sister, Sandy Reese; children, Michael Reese, Michelle (Reese) Dorrow, Melinda (Reese)Ramzi, and Matthew Reese; grandchildren, Rebekah (Dorrow) Rodriguez and husband Isaac, Samuel Dorrow, Elijah Dorrow, Katie Dreibrodt, Julie Dreibrodt, Lillie Reese, Amira Ramzi, Aaliyah Ramzi, and Layla Ramzi.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Graveside services and interment with full military honors will be held at San Geronimo Cemetery on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. James Louis Oates, who unexpectedly left us on October 24, 2023. Known to many as “Goat”, he was born on July 3, 1957. James was an individual of authenticity, generosity, trustworthiness, and an affinity for fun. He was a simple soul but was a rich man because everybody he touched with love, loved him in return.

His radiant personality shone through in his devotion to his family and friends, a legacy that will live on.

James most recently had a respectable career at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, proudly retiring in 2022. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver. He spent countless hours rebuilding motors, fixing cars, and building things. He enjoyed the time spent in Wilburn Brown’s garage during the 1980’s building the awardwinning tractor pull truck “Fantasy”. His many years as a truck driver were recognized as accident free, quite an accomplishment for all the miles he traveled across the country. His tireless work ethic was an example to all who knew him. Emphasizing the importance of a job done right, he passed this valuable lesson on to his children, teaching them about the gratification and rewards of hard work. It was during his career at Structural Metals Inc. that he was introduced to his lifelong friends and brothers including Henry “Tequila” Mertz, Ernest “Cowboy” Neumann, Reyes “Chainsaw”

Castenalloz, Timothy “Dancing Bear” Sczech, and Larry “Gear Jammer” Jahns. Ultimately these men and their families meshed together creating an unbelievably strong, lifelong example of brotherly love and what it truly means to be a family.

James met the love of his life, Patty McFarland in 2007. The couple shared a vivacious love for one another that was like no other. They were most happy just being together and shared a love for animals, dancing, country music, good food, their family, and friends. Anyone that knew of James and Patty knew that they were each other’s soul mates. June 15, 2013, Patty unexpectedly suffered a major stroke and passed away leaving a void in James’ heart that many could agree would never be filled.

James is survived by his mother, Nellie Oates, his devoted sister, Linda and husband Allan Trial and nephew Scott Trial. His two cherished children; his daughter, Jennifer Horne and husband Glen Horne and his son, Christopher Oates and fiancé April Ferrell. His beloved granddaughter, Presley Hirsch was undoubtedly the apple of his eye. James leaves behind a brother, JJ Edwards. James also loved another brother, David McFarland and his wife Linda. Their children Cheyenne and Hunter were very dear to him and he looked after them as any good uncle should. James was predeceased by his father, Samuel Louis Oates.

The loss of James leaves a void that can never be filled. His authenticity and generosity made every interaction with him feel genuine and warm. He will be dearly missed, but his lessons, his love and his legacy will persist in the hearts of those he left behind. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.

Second Pig Heart Transplant Recipient Dies (Baltimore, MD) -- The second person to receive a pig heart transplant has died. On Tuesday, Maryland doctors confirmed Lawrence Faucette died in late September, nearly six weeks after the pig heart was transplanted. Doctors said the heart seemed healthy for the first month or so but began showing signs of rejection in the days before Faucette’s death. The surgeon who lead the transplant said his “last wish was for us to make the most of what we have learned from our experience.” Faucette’s wife said her husband “knew his time was short and this was his last chance to do for others.”

Cleveland Clinic To Deliver Meds With Drone (Cleveland, OH) -- Cleveland Clinic says it is working on plans to deliver medications to patients via drones. The plan is to begin using the drones in 2025 to deliver medications and prescriptions from more than a dozen of its locations across northeast Ohio, but will eventually expand to deliver prescription meals, lab samples and medical supplies. San Francisco based Zipline will provide the drones and its operating system.

ACA Open Enrollment Starts (Undated) -- Open enrollment for healthcare insurance under the Affordable Care Act is underway. Those new to the program and those renewing plans can sign up starting today. A record 16-point-three million people signed up through the health insurance marketplace last year.

Seafood Safety Task Force Takes On Potentially Dangerous Imported Shrimp (Baton Rouge, LA) -- The Louisiana Seafood Safety Task Force is trying to protect consumers from contaminants and the state’s seafood industry from ruin. Cheap shrimp and crawfish from overseas are flooding the Louisiana seafood market, crippling the local industry. Wildflower.org shows bloom time as October and with our weather the way it is, late October and November might be the new time. This native grass likes sandy, pine openings; prairies; and dry, exposed ledges. However, it also grows in my front flower bed. It requires low to medium water, full sun, and grows from one to three feet. According to Wildflower, it has high deer resistance. I have not tried, but supposedly Gulf Muhly germinates easily. When the heads start to lose their pink color, use a comb to collect the seeds.

Is there a quicker and easier way than growing them from seed?

Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac lists a few easy to root plants. All it takes is a cutting which you place in garden soil. As a matter of fact, you need to cut a few stems off of your basil right now so that you will have a new small plant to put on your kitchen window sill this winter. Another plant that roots fast is the ficus. I recently trimmed my

Welsh reminds us that dormant, woody stems are best rooted during the fall and winter. On all cuttings, use a sharp knife or razor blade rather than pruning shears. The end of the cutting which will go in the soil should be cut at a 45 degree angle to give more area where roots will form. Dip the cut end in powdered rooting hormone if you have it.

Make a pencil-sized hole in the soil and slip the cutting in, then firm the soil. At this point you can put the pot on your potting bench, or make a soda bottle greenhouse, or put it under lights. Just remember to keep the soil moist. I always try to root many more than I want since so many of mine die. However, if even one cutting makes it, that is one more than I had.

FYI: It is about time to bring in your houseplants that spent summer on the porch or outside. As soon as a freeze is forecast, my plumaria will go in the garage, and my orchids will go in the house under the lights. As always, don’t forget to keep those birdbaths filled.
