Area high school students take a sneak peek into the rewards of manufacturing SEDC hosts Made in Seguin Manufacturing Industry Bus Tour Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The eyes of area high school students opened a bit wider recently as they toured a number of manufacturing facilities in Seguin. Manufacturing Day is a national event designed to showcase the modern manufacturing technology and careers found within the walls of a student’s hometown.

Locally, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SECD) hosted its Made in Seguin Manufacturing Industry Bus Tour for area juniors and seniors from Seguin, Navarro and Marion ISDs. Cisneros say they were impressed by the diverse career options available at the local company.

“I haven’t been here before but now that I have experienced this, I’ve got to see how a lot of this works and how factories really work inside. I’m glad I got to experience it because it really helps me decide on what I want to do with a career I pick,” said Cisneros.

Investigators continue to seek leads in death of area woman Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office is working on an ongoing investigation into the death of 24-year-old Sarah Gaitan.

Gaitan, who was from San Antonio, went missing on or about Oct. 4th, 2015.

Five months later in March of 2016, human remains were found in a field off Gerdes Road located in a rural area of Guadalupe County. The human remains were later identified and confirmed as Gaitan. The Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance with any information on the death of Sarah Gaitan.

Anyone who has information regarding this investigation and wishes to remain anonymous is asked to contact the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 877-403-TIPS (8477).

Holiday sales come earlier each year Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(College Station) -- Christmas is still two months away, but the holiday shopping is already getting started.

Best Buy launches their Black Friday sales later this week as a way to appease customer demand, and several other retailers are also starting to push their holiday deals.

Thomas McMillan, who heads the Center for Retailing Studies at Texas A&M says it’s not just the holiday commercials that are starting earlier, but he more and more people are also getting a jump start on their holiday shopping this year.

“We’re starting to see more and more consumers start to want to shop in October or earlier,” said McMillan.

McMillan says, over the past few years, Black Friday has turned into Black November. He says now it’s even earlier.

“Consumers are planning to shop earlier and earlier so they can spread their dollars out over a longer period of time,” said McMillan.

McMillan says sales have been coming earlier each year, and it really sped up during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There was supply chain issues.

And so, there was a lot of press in the market, that you know it might be difficult to find the holiday gift (that you wanted),” said McMillan.

The National Retail Federation says those celebrating the winter holidays expect to spend $875,000 this year on Christmas gifts, decorations and holiday food items.

Running for faith Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, located on West New Braunfels Street, recently welcomed and honored torch runners participating in the Carrera Antorcha Guadalupana from Mexico to New York. Antorcha is celebrating its 21st anniversary of being messengers of dignity and spreading the word of faith, peace Tour, continued.

“I was surprised about how they made the bottle caps and how they made the water bottles -- how they heat them up to the right temperature and form it with air and how the bottle is shaped,” said Rangel.

But perhaps what was most impressive for most students was the fact that 50 million water bottles are designed and filled each week here in Seguin.

Also coming away with some new knowledge was Rick Bough Seguin ISD director of career and technical education (CTE). Bough says, constant changes in the industry means there’s always something new to learn.

“I thought the conversation about the making of the bottles (was interesting ). This is an engineering class so for them to get a grasp of that engineering process that goes into it because we think of engineering as behind a desk (job) but ultimately, this is the application of what it is they are learning. So it’s an opportunity for them to see that,” said Bough.

At the end of it all, the opportunity for the students to learn more about their community is why Bough says they continue to participate in this initiative.

“This is just a great opportunity for our students.

It gives them a chance to see the manufacturing process. It also exposes them to careers that are available right here in Seguin and that’s really what we are focusing on is ‘One Heart, One Seguin’ and really showing our students you don’t have to go somewhere else to find a great job,” said Bough.

The Seguin region has nearly 7,000 manufacturing jobs. That’s more than three times the national average.

The other participating businesses in this year’s tour include Caterpillar, Ameritex, CMC Steel Texas, Hexcel, Cavco Industries, Niagara Bottling, Rave Gears, Alamo Industrial and the TX Federation for Advanced Education (TX FAME) Lone Star Chapter/Texas State Technical College.

Wagner runs away from Seguin on Thursday night in Converse Chris Austin

(Converse) -- The Wagner Thunderbirds showed why they are one of the top teams in District 12-5A with a dominating 41-7 win over the Seguin Matadors at Rutledge Stadium in Converse on Thursday night.

After forcing a three-and-out by the Matadors on their first possession of the game, Wagner scored on their first play from scrimmage. Slot-back Juan’yae Taylor took a pitch from the Thunderbird wishbone attack and raced 45 yards down the right sideline to the end-zone to get Wagner on the board first.

The Matadors would punt again on their next possession and Wagner would make the score 14-0 capping off their next drive with a four-yard touchdown run by William Reynolds.

Seguin punter Landon Trost would pin the Thunderbirds deep inside the five-yard line and the Matador defense would stop Wagner on a three-and-out and start their next drive in Thunderbird territory, leading to a Devin Hall 23-

yard touchdown run to get the Mats on the board to pull Seguin within 14-7 but that’s as close as the Mats would get on the evening. Wagner would score two more touchdowns before the end of the half and tack on two more in the second half.

Wagner had 419 total yards of offense all on the ground while limiting Seguin to just 175. Matador running back John Jackson had 113 yards rushing on 19 carries, extending his program single season total to 1713 yards.

Seguin falls to 3-3 and fifth place in district, a half-game behind BoerneChampion and New Braunfels Canyon. Wagner is now 5-1. The T-birds trail 5-0 Smithson Valley by a half-game.

The Matadors will host Smithson Valley next Friday at Matador Stadium for Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and we’ll have the game for you on KWED.

Pat was born on August 10, 1938, in Houston, Texas to Antonio P. and Alice (Duffy) Frank. She was married to the love of her life, Anthony Cantu for 52 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. The focus of her life has always been her faith and family. Her sweet, gentle soul touched everyone she encountered. Among some of Pat’s many joys were gardening, ceramics, making jewelry, gambling, and traveling.

Sue retired from GBRA after 23 years of service. She enjoyed her membership in the Zonta Club and playing Mahjong with her girlfriends. Sue will be remembered as an incredible party planner, holiday coordinator, and grandkid babysitter, always making family times special and

Marvin graduated from Seguin High School in 1959. He went on to get his degree in Accounting from Southwest Texas State University.

Marvin worked in Seguin as an Accountant for 52 years. He loved his church, was the church secretary and an active board member for 40 years. He was a skilled woodworker and loved making furniture in his workshop for family and friends which they still treasure in their homes today. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting, teaching his granddaughters to fish, playing golf with his friends, and collecting CASE knives.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Church with The Rev. Michael Moak and the Rev. Donald Wiehe officiating. A reception will follow.

A private family burial will be held in San Geronimo Cemetery at a later date.

Diced Onion Product Causes Multistate Salmonella Outbreak (Atlanta, GA) -- At least 73 people are sick after a salmonella outbreak in multiple states linked to a diced onion product. The CDC said there have been 15 hospitalizations in 22 states and issued a food safety alert for the Gills Onions products. The company also issued a voluntary recall. The produces include certain lots of diced yellow onions, diced celery and onions, diced mirepoix and diced red onions.

Federal Judge Dismisses Challenge To Indiana’s Abortion Ban (Indianapolis, IN) -- A federal judge is dismissing a lawsuit that challenged Indiana’s near-total abortion ban. The Satanic Temple filed a suit claiming the abortion law passed in 2022 violated religious freedom and the Fifth, Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. A judge ruled Wednesday that The Satanic Temple failed to prove they had standing to sue. This comes after an Indiana Supreme Court ruling in June that state legislators are able to limit abortions that are not necessary to protect a woman’s life or from a serious health risk.

WA Sued After Social Workers Failed To Prevent Starvation & Death Of Teen (Portland, OR) -- Washington state’s health and family services department is facing a lawsuit accusing it of failing to check on a teenager who was allegedly starved to death by his adopted parents. The lawsuit claims that the agencies failed to check on 15-year old Karreon Franks, who died in November 2020 one day after they were supposed to check on his welfare. The initial complaint was in 2017. Karreon was five-three and weighed just 61 pounds when he died of starvation.

L.A. City Council May Rescind COVID Vaccination Mandate For City Employees (Los Angeles, CA) -- The Los Angeles City Council could rescind the COVID-19 vaccination mandate for city employees. On Wednesday, Council President Paul Krekorian and councilmember Traci Park introduced a motion calling for a report about the feasibility of getting rid of the mandate, which has been in place for two years. Mayor Karen Bass says she supports the motion. The Los Angeles Unified School District dropped its employee vaccination mandate about a month ago.
