SpongeBob musical opens for the public tonight at SHS Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Families are invited to take a deep dive into the world of SpongeBob SquarePants Musical: Youth Edition. Curtains open tonight for the Seguin High School Theatre production at the SHS Performing Arts Center.

Theater Teacher Lydia Robles says the lively and “color explosion” underwater set will come to life with yet another talented Matador cast and crew.

“We have a good amount of people and this show, it’s a very large show. Creating Bikini Bottom is no easy feat and all the characters that go in it but we have a lot of students who also just are SpongeBob like,” laughs Robles. “We look at our actors and we think ‘oh, I wonder what characters they would fully embody and become and SpongeBob is right up there and it’s kind of a recent release so as we were on Facebook and looking at other theater departments and what they were doing, SpongeBob was on top of the list and lots of fun. Local pumpkin patch continues to create memories

(Seguin) -- Although Seguin’s Pumpkin Patch at First Methodist Church is nearing its final days, its activity of making memories and celebrating the season has really only gotten started. That’s according to Senior Pastor Cathe Evins. Evins says for years, the church has turned its front lawn into a sea of orange welcoming families from generation to generation.

This year, however, might just be their best year yet.

“This year has just been incredible. We’ve had more traffic through the pumpkin patch than ever before. People seem amazed that there is no charge to come in or that they can come in and take family pictures at the photo sites and there’s no charge for that. We just want to make it just a fun and festive tradition for people. Many have been coming there since they were young,” said Evins.

The patch, with its first truckload of pumpkins, first arrived on that final day in September. Since then, the importance of those pumpkins and their travel to Seguin have become the message to all those who have stopped by for a visit.

“This year, we’ve also had an increase in the number of elementary school children who have come through

the patch. We’ve got over 1,800 kids that have come with their classes and their teachers and we make sure every one of them leaves with a little small pumpkin and they go to Storytime in the patch and then they also go to a little science fair where they learn about why pumpkins float and a little lesson about where the pumpkins come from. They all come from the Navajo Indians. They raise them and it’s a major source of income for the Navajo people and they come a long way to our pumpkin patch,” said Evins.

While there have been a growing number of other pumpkin patches in the area, Evins says the Seguin patch will always be special. She says it’s signature to all those who live in the community.

“There’s just a lot of joy in he pumpkin patch. The kids are excited. The people will tell us ‘oh, this is our daughter’s first time in a pumpkin patch.’ And, the kids enjoy picking out their favorite pumpkin and we give them stickers and coloring sheets to take home. It’s just really a joyful experience,” said Evins.

The FMC Seguin Pumpkin Patch is located at 710 N. Austin St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. The final day for the patch is Tuesday, Oct. 31.

As part of the performance, the audience will follow the citizens of Bikini Bottom as they discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home. Robles says the audience is set to surely resonate with the plot during those very critical moments.

“I think what we’ve pulled out of it is it’s about really discovering your worth and that even though your talents may not be -- you know, you are going to go on and change the world, still you are valuable based on every talent that is given to you. Sometimes, it’s just you discovering what your talent is and using it to the best of your ability and for SpongeBob, it turns

out to be management skills. So, it’s fun to enjoy the fact that it celebrates everyone’s talents not just the best and the brightest. Sometimes, it’s just being a good person can be your best quality,” said Robles.

Prior to tonight’s opening, Robles says the cast will perform multiple shows during the day for local elementary school children. She says even children in local daycares and middle school theater students have been invited to be a part of the audience. She says three more children’s shows will continue all day Thursday with a second public performance returning on Saturday.

Despite its origin from the animated Nickelodeon TV show, Robles is certain that even the adults will find the live show just entertaining.

“We highly encourage our community to come out and watch these shows. For our adult audiences,

SpongeBob has a lot of little things that you can enjoy. When you have a little more knowledge about the world and things like that, they seep little things in the show that an adult can get a great chuckle out of and we also have lots of song and dance that’s very representative of different genres of music. The show itself was written by multiple artists -- not just one person wrote all the music for this show. So, it’s like a journey through all kinds of different sounding music and you can enjoy all the little nuances that they plug in throughout the show that the adult audience always gets to enjoy,” said Robles.

Marion’s Kelli Cielencki punches ticket to state cross country meet Chris Austin

(Corpus Christi) -- Marion’s Kelli Cielencki qualified for the state cross country meet after her performance at the UIL Region IV Class 3A Regional Cross Country Meet in Corpus Christi on Monday. The senior finished the two-mile course at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 13 minutes and 22.39 seconds.

Cielencki will compete next Thursday at the 3A state meet at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.

Meanwhile, the Class 4A Region IV Championship will be held today in Corpus Christi. Navarro’s Ethan Luu, who finished in 1st place overall at the District 27-4A cross country meet, will compete on the boys side. The Lady Panther cross country team, which finished third as a team at the district meet, will compete in the 4A regional girls competition.

The 4A varsity girls race will start at 11:00 a.m. The varsity boys will start their race at 11:30 a.m.

Forrest Wayne Gunckel, 68, of Seguin, Texas, lost his battle with cancer on September 17, 2023. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Forrest expressed his love for his family and said, “Ive had a good run and I’m going to see my buddies.”

Forrest was born on February 2, 1955 at the former Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, to Shirley Rose Schultz Gunckel (daughter of August (Pat) and Rosa Schultz), and Larry Wayne Gunckel. He spent most of his childhood years at his father’s military assignments, settling in Seguin, Texas upon his father’s retirement from the Air Force.

Forrest attended Seguin High School, working part-time for the Koehler Company. After high school, as a full-time employee, he quickly acquired cabinet making skills and demonstrated that he was a talented craftsman. In his early 20’s, Forrest decided to start his own business and went on to have a successful career as the owner of Gunckel Architectural Millworks. As the business grew, he acquired a warehouse at the company’s current location on West Kingsbury Street. He set it up with state-of-the-art equipment and

began to take on large commercial projects. With a passion for woodwork, he dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft and becoming a successful entrepreneur. His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded by his colleagues and clients.

Even though business was his primary interest throughout his life, Forrest still found time for other pursuits and had a passion for golf, fishing, gardening and cooking, with a special talent for barbecuing. Forrest’s dream was to retire in Rockport, where he could fish to his heart’s content. It is there that his final resting place will be, with his ashes to be scattered at sea.

Forrest had a vibrant personality and was especially known for his wit and sense of humor. He had a special bond with his dog, Jax, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Forrest will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Linsey Amstead; son-in-law, Brent Amstead; and grandkids Kylee and Asher. He leaves behind his father, Larry Gunckel; and stepmother, Jodi Gunckel; sisters, Cindy and husband Avery Curnel, Terry Atkinson and partner Jim Roe; and stepsister, Cathi Barnes. He is preceded by his mother, Shirley Gunckel; and brother, Gary Gunckel.

A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor and remember Forrest’s life on October 28th at 12 p.m. a Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar St. in Seguin, Texas. In lieu of floweres, the family request that memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the American Cancer Society.

Experts Warn About Intense Respiratory Virus Season (Atlanta, GA) -- Experts are warning about a challenging respiratory virus season and strongly reccomend getting vaccinated. A CDC forecast says there could be as many as 25 new weekly hospitalizations for every 100-thousand people in the US. The CDC suggests this season will be similar to last year, which had hospitals more full than any other point in the pandemic.

Man Healthy, Recovering After Pig Heart Transplant (Baltimore, MD) -- More than a month after his historic operation, a man is getting used to his new heart. Lawrence Faucette, who’s 58, is the second transplant patient in history to receive a genetically modified pig heart. Surgeons with the University of Maryland say he’s showing no signs of infection or organ rejection. Faucette is working with physical therapists to get back on his feet, but he hit a big milestone last week when doctors took him off the drugs that had been supporting his heart function. They say the 20-year Navy veteran is doing well. There’s no guarantee of long-term survival -- the first person to get this procedure died just two months after -- but doctors say Faucette is full of joy and embracing life.

Rare Mosquito-Borne Virus Case (Los Angeles, CA) -- An extremely rare mosquito-borne virus has been detected in Pasadena. The city’s Public Health Department says someone was diagnosed with dengue [[ den-gay ]] fever on Friday. Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes that is rare in the U.S. but endemic to other countries. Officials say its the first known case in California where the patient had not recently traveled. Despite that, officials say there’s very low risk of more people contracting the virus in Pasadena. The patient in this case is said to be recovering.

NJ Further Strengthens Mental Health Support At Colleges (Trenton, NJ) -- There’s a new law now in effect to further strengthen mental health support on college campuses throughout New Jersey. Acting Governor Tahesha Way signed legislation last week requiring those who are trained in mental health to annually update their faculty and staff on how to recognize signs of depression in students and warning signs and risk factors associated with student suicide. Resident assistants must also get annual training on those warning signs and know how to refer students to campus mental health resources.
