Family Violence Shelter is now the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A local non-profit group has a new name, that hopefully better reflects its mission of serving families across this area. The Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter is now called the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center.

Executive Director Delilah Reyes says the new name not only better reflects their overall mission, but it also helps to promote their vision for each person that they serve.

She says they are more than a shelter, and they wanted the name to suggest that they are there to help families in a number of ways.

“We really wanted to go with something that reflects more of our mission. It’s not just about surviving the abuse or being a victim of the abuse. It’s about surviving it, thriving and healing from those wounds.

We want to focus on thriving beyond the trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking,” said Reyes.

The new name comes as the organization celebrates 40 years of service in the Seguin area. Reyes says they now service a much larger territory, with clients now in Guadalupe, Karnes, Wilson and Gonzales counties.

Tickets for annual purse bingo now available

(Seguin) – The hottest thing next to those Taylor Swift tickets might just be tickets to the annual Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center Designer Purse Bingo. That’s because tickets to this fundraiser have traditionally sold-out way in advance.

Making sure you adhere to the warning in getting those tickets as soon as possible is Executive Director Christy Williams.

“We sold out weeks before the event last year. We released the tickets maybe a little bit later this year and they’ve been out since Thursday of last week. So, I haven’t checked in to see how those tickets are moving just yet, but we had lots of people calling our ticket locations hoping to get them in advance through the locations. So, I know there are people who are ready to purchase but this is an event that we sold out, especially last year at 750 tickets and this year, we are hoping for 800 and it’s a really fun night. It doesn’t feel like that many people are in the room. Everybody gets to engage in some way because there are so many door prizes and so many games that are happening throughout the night,” said Williams.

This year’s fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Seguin Coliseum. Williams says the annual fundraiser, especially for those new in the area, is a fun

way to raise money for the advocacy center which works with abused and neglected children in Seguin and surrounding communities.

“We will play 20 rounds of bingo and just a straight line, nothing fancy, just there to have some fun and play the game and the prize for each one of the games is a designer purse. So, the winner of the game will walk away with a Coach or Dooney & Bourke or Kate Spade, Consuela -- something like that and we are playing for those prizes and door prizes are given out throughout the night. There’s dinner and we have a drawing for a Louis Vuitton this year,” said Williams.

Williams says this year’s event will include a catered meal from Willie’s Grill & Icehouse. The menu will include pulled pork sandwiches, chips, and a brownie.

Doors open and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Nov. 2, followed by games at 7 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are $50 each. The remaining tickets, if any, will be $55 at the door.

Pecan Fest is taking over Downtown Seguin and beyond this year with heritage activities, markets, entertainment, and more! In the heart of Seguin, Pecan Fest Trade Days will open up at 10am. This year's event boasts over 120 different vendor booths selling home goods, yard decor, jewelry, tasty treats, and more. Additionally, there will be vendors selling their pecan products like pecan cakes and other baked goods, jam, coffee, earrings, cutlery,

and whole pecans. How nutty!

In addition to fantastic shopping, the sounds of local musicians will fill the park with performers from the Seguin Music Shed and Derek Kreuger gracing our stage. Beer and wine will be flowing in the garden, and confident nutcrackers can

Reyes says that the gala was a big success, and they continue to receive more support from the local community. She says they recently received a donation from the Seguin Elks Lodge. The lodge donated $2,000 worth of groceries, that the center will use to help feed the families and individuals that are currently within the crisis center’s shelter.

“The Elks Lodge reached out and wanted to help us with our food needs. That was a very generous offer.

Of course, all of us are feeling the inflation on food, and we’re definitely feeling that, housing as many people as we do. We have a full house right now and we really need any support that we can receive. Feeding numerous teens and numerous adults is hard to do. So we really appreciate that donation from them,” said Reyes.

Reyes says they hope that other individuals, businesses or organizations will follow the example set by the Elks Lodge and others who continue to give.

She says there’s always a need for household items that many of us might take for granted.

“We’re always in need of those everyday items, (like) laundry soap, bleach, cleaning supplies, (and) paper goods. Anything that you use in your household on a daily (basis), we need those on a constant (basis, including) pillows, blankets, comforters, (and) towels,” said Reyes.

The crisis center is working to help people transition into a better and safer situation. Reyes says they try to allow them to keep some of those items that

compete in the Get Crackin' Contest to see how many pecans they can shell in two minutes!

Other events downtown during Pecan Fest include free tours of the Historic Magnolia Hotel and Heritage Village. History lovers can stop by the Heritage Museum to learn all about the history of Guadalupe County and get a picture with Seguin's favorite antique fire truck.

Coming back this year is the Seguin Film & Arts Fest at the Palace Theatre. Tickets are free to this independent film festival where cinephiles can catch feature films and shorts throughout the weekend.

“There are a lot of people that come and go, and those things need to be replaced just because of the wear and tear. We do allow people to take pillows and comforters and blankets with them, especially if they’re moving into a home. You know, they’ve been using those and if they want to take them, we let them.

That’s one of those things that we constantly have to replace. We want people to be comfortable. We want them to feel like they’re at home. We are trying to get a good inventory of pillows and towels just because those are things that people don’t want to use too many times. We do cover the pillows with protective cases, but it’s still something you don’t want to use over and over again. So, we do like to try to send them home with them. But if we don’t have enough, we can’t do that,” said Reyes.

Making donations to the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center is easy. You can support them by dropping things off at its Cranny Thrift Shop, in the Crossroads Shopping Center. Reyes says the best way to donate the requested household items is to call the center directly.

“You can call the shelter 830-372-2780 and the staff there will help you set up a time to stop by there and deliver those items. Those new items -- we do like them delivered directly to the shelter,” said Reyes.

Reyes says they have a number long-term plans that are in the works. She says that will eventually include a large capital campaign, that will help them raise money to build a new shelter. Meanwhile, she says her staff and the center’s Board of Directors will continue to work to support families in crisis throughout this part of Texas.

SEGUIN, Texas -- No. 21 Texas Lutheran men’s soccer (13-2, 4-2 SCAC) matched the program record for shutouts in a season, defeating the University of Dallas Crusaders (1-11-3, 0-6-1 SCAC) 3-0 at Gustafson Field on Senior Day. Jack Manke (Houston/Stratford) scored the first of his two goals on Sunday via a 7th minute penalty kick. Preston Huff (Cypress/Cy-Fair) would score his second goal of the weekend in the 54th minute via assists from Louis Hart (Missouri City/ Ridge Point) and Santiago Quinonez (Chihuahua, Mexico/New Braunfels) followed by an 82nd minute goal by Manke to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 win

on Sunday.

The Crusaders only managed one shot on the evening while Texas Lutheran finished with 24 total shots. Noel Pena (Houston/Cy-Falls) made the Bulldogs only save in the first half.

TLU’s ten shutouts matches the program record mark set in 2003 and 2015.

Forrest Wayne Gunckel, 68, of Seguin, Texas, lost his battle with cancer on September 17, 2023. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Forrest expressed his love for his family and said, “Ive had a good run and I’m going to see my buddies.”

Forrest was born on February 2, 1955 at the former Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, to Shirley Rose Schultz Gunckel (daughter of August (Pat) and Rosa Schultz), and Larry Wayne Gunckel. He spent most of his childhood years at his father’s military assignments, settling in Seguin, Texas upon his father’s retirement from the Air Force.

Forrest attended Seguin High School, working part-time for the Koehler Company. After high school, as a full-time employee, he quickly acquired cabinet making skills and demonstrated that he was a talented craftsman. In his early 20’s, Forrest decided to start his own business and went on to have a successful career as the owner of Gunckel Architectural Millworks. As the business grew, he acquired a warehouse at the company’s current location on West Kingsbury Street. He set it up with state-of-the-art equipment and

began to take on large commercial projects. With a passion for woodwork, he dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft and becoming a successful entrepreneur. His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded by his colleagues and clients.

Even though business was his primary interest throughout his life, Forrest still found time for other pursuits and had a passion for golf, fishing, gardening and cooking, with a special talent for barbecuing. Forrest’s dream was to retire in Rockport, where he could fish to his heart’s content. It is there that his final resting place will be, with his ashes to be scattered at sea.

Forrest had a vibrant personality and was especially known for his wit and sense of humor. He had a special bond with his dog, Jax, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Forrest will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Linsey Amstead; son-in-law, Brent Amstead; and grandkids Kylee and Asher. He leaves behind his father, Larry Gunckel; and stepmother, Jodi Gunckel; sisters, Cindy and husband Avery Curnel, Terry Atkinson and partner Jim Roe; and stepsister, Cathi Barnes. He is preceded by his mother, Shirley Gunckel; and brother, Gary Gunckel.

A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor and remember Forrest’s life on October 28th at 12 p.m. a Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar St. in Seguin, Texas. In lieu of floweres, the family request that memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the American Cancer Society.

Pfizer Ups Cost Of Paxlovid As US Ends Pandemic Emergency Phase (New York, NY) -- Pfizer is upping the cost of its COVID-19 medication Paxlovid by more than double what it was. As the U.S. transitions out of the pandemic’s emergency phase, the drugmaker is changing the list price of the drug before insurance to nearly 14-hundred dollars for a five-day course, according to the Wall Street Journal. That’s up from 530-dollars-per-course, which was paid by the US government to provide Paxlovid free to patients. Pfizer said it would offer assistance for copays for those who qualify.

New Study Links Red Meat To Higher Risk Of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Later (Washington, DC) -- Eating red meat is linked to a higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life. That’s according to a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study’s first author said the connection has come up in different populations across the world and says he hopes the study can “settle the debate regarding whether we should limit red meat intake for health concerns or not.” Past studies have made the connection between red meat and type 2 diabetes, but the latest research looked to add details about how red meat affects diabetes diagnoses long-term.

CVS Pharmacies Discontinuing Sales Of Cold Medicines With Ineffective Ingredient (Undated) -- CVS stores across the U.S. are discontinuing sales of cold medicines that contain a drug now labeled as ineffective by the FDA. Company officials have told CBS News they plan to stop selling over-the-counter products that use phenylephrine as their only active ingredient.

FDA advisors recently informed the agency that there does not seem to be any improvement in congestion when using the drug. The substance is used as an ingredient in a number of popular cold medicines, including some variations of Dayquil, Mucinex, and Sudafed.

Records Show More Bed Bugs Found In Strip Hotel Rooms (Las Vegas, NV) -- New records show more hotels on the Las Vegas Strip have had bed bug problems than previously thought. The Southern Nevada Health District says bed bugs were found in a hotel room at The Venetian on July 29th, and at the Park MGM on August 14th. Both rooms were inspected for bed bugs after guests made reports, and tested positive for the insects. There have also been reports of bed bugs being found at Caesars Palace, Circus Circus, Palazzo, the MGM Grand, the Tropicana, Planet Hollywood, and the Sahara in the past two years.

DEA National Take Back Initiative The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, in collaborative efforts with the Drug Enforcement Agency(DEA) will be hosting its National Take Back Initiative from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 in front of the two-story Sheriff’s Office entrance located at 2617 N.
