First rollout of lake safety study released

(Seguin) -- Some findings and recommendations on what parts of the area lakes are safe and unsafe have been released. Report #1 of the Independent Expert Panel as authorized by the courts was released on Monday.

That concern has been on the top of the list of arguments for GBRA officials, who were ready to drain the lakes in response to the safety of all residents in September The report states "it is in the opinion of the IEP that a 'sunny day' gate failure -- (example, a gate failure occurring during non-high flow periods) is the critical scenario due to gates being in full upright position, elevated population at risk and no advanced warning of the failure." The failure of Lake Dunlap back in May was reported as having been a sunny day gate failure.

The report was pieced together by a third impartial expert hired by Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority and the set of plaintiffs, who in September agreed to a temporary injunction -- part of that injunction, which delayed the draining of area lakes, included a safety study that could help oversee those on the lakes until both sides could meet back in court one year from now.

While most areas are noted as safe or suitable for activity or recreation, the report does designate a listing of "unsafe zones." The report states "The IEP has adopted a geographic scope extending from Dunlap dam through FM 1117 and from SH 80 through Gonzales CR 143 on the Guadalupe River.

fle. We'll also have on both nights, we'll have three food trucks for meal options which will be Cajun on the Geaux, Grouchy Mama's and Trini and Momo's Casita," said Bargfrede.

Bargfrede says he encourages everyone to come out tonight or both nights. He says you don't have to be a hunter or an outdoorsmen to enjoy the event.

"It's always a fun time. For one thing, the horns contest, you get to see all the animals harvested the previous year and you get to hear a lot of hunting stories and meet with friends that all have like interest but then again, there's plenty for everybody to do. We have from children, men and women, there's plenty for everybody to do. It's just a fun family event and that's what we always kind of center around is family," said Bargfrede. Tickets for this year's 30 gun raffle are $10 each or six for $50. Buck Fever is scheduled today and Thursday from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. There is no cost today (Wednesday) for children who show their student ID. There is no cost for children under the age of six.

Healthy Nut Run set for Saturday Seguin ISD families, community invited to tackle 5K, 1K for kids

The Seguin Education Foundation, the Seguin ISD and the city of Seguin are again joining forces in hosting the annual Kids mile and 5K. This year's event will be held on Saturday at Max Starcke Park.

A lot of our runners are teachers or their family members so it's just a nice community event that goes back to a great cause," said Torres.

Entry is $10 for all Seguin ISD students (K-12) online or onsite and $20 for adults online or $25 online on the day of the event.

Laura Torres, the executive director for the Seguin Education Foundation, says the signature event during Seguin's Pecan Fest Heritage Days is the school district's opportunity to promote community health and wellness as "a foundation for student success."

Seguin Sports Boosters induct 2019 Hall of Honor Class (Seguin) - The Seguin Sports Boosters introduced the 2019 inductees to the Seguin ISD Athletics Hall of Honor during a ceremony and reception at Goldie Harris Gym and before the Matadors' home football game against Austin-McCallum last Friday.

The 2019 inductees include Dr. Whitney Welsch Reese, Logan Johnson, Emily Cheek, and Loren Cordes.

Reese, a 1999 Seguin graduate, was a three-time All-District and 1999 District MVP soccer player for the Matadors. She went on to a collegiate soccer career at University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where she was named the Heartland Conference Defender of the Year and received All-Conference recognition.

Johnson, SHS Class of 2007, was an All-District and All-State defensive end for the Matador football team. He helped Seguin earn three consecutive playoff berths and win the District 25-5A championship in 2006. Johnson played on Blinn College's NJCAA national championship football team in 2009, and still

holds the school record for career sacks. Johnson continues his football career at Tarleton State, where he earned All-Lone Star Conference and Division II All-America honors. A back injury ended his one-year NFL stint with the Seattle Seahawks.

Cheek is a 2008 Seguin graduate who helped spark the resurgence of the Matador volleyball program. She was named District MVP as a junior and senior, and earned All-State honors her senior year. Cheek was the driving force on the 2007 team that earned the program's first playoff berth since 1991.

She went on to play indoor and beach volleyball at the NCAA Division I level at Loyola-Marymount University.

Cordes was a contributor and officer in the Seguin Sports Booster Club for some three decades and served as part of the chain crew during football games before passing away in August of 2019. A multi-sport athlete in high school, Cordes played college basketball at Texas Lutheran from 1972-76. His son Luke was a member of Seguin's 2006 district championship football team, and his daughter Molly was an accomplished basketball player at SHS.

TLU women's soccer splits SCAC home matches (Seguin) - The Texas Lutheran women's soccer team edged Schreiner 3-2 in double overtime Friday before falling to Trinity 5-0 Saturday in a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matches at Gustafson Field.

The Bulldogs erased a two-goal halftime deficit with two second-half goals and the match-winner in double overtime to edge Schreiner.

Anna Bourbonnais scored the "golden goal" at the 109:03 mark, just 57 seconds before the match would have been declared a tie if neither team had scored after the two 10-minute overtime periods.

(Seguin) - The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team split a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matches at home last weekend, rolling to a 5-1 win over Schreiner on Friday and falling to Trinity 1-0 at Gustafson Field.

(San Antonio) - The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs posted a four-set win over Johnson & Wales Denver and a three-set loss to Trinity on Saturday to complete a 2-2 weekend at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover in San Antonio.

The Bulldogs defeated St. Thomas (Texas) 3-1 and lost to Austin College in four sets on Friday.

The Bulldogs are 16-13 overall and 7-7 in the SCAC. The Bulldogs currently sit in fifth place in the conference standings. The top six teams advance to the conference tournament, which TLU hosts Nov. 8-10 in Memorial Gymnasium.

TLU defeated JWU-Denver 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16. TLU hit .173 for the match and held the Wildcats to .045. The Bulldogs tallied 13 total blocks against the Wildcats.

Peyton Sulak and Kacie Hall each had eight kills for TLU in the win. Hall added three solo blocks.

Jaci Chambers delivered 20 assists and collected 14 digs. Chambers also served four aces. Lexi Morris led TLU with 22 digs.

Kelsi Menn recorded four solo blocks and a block assist.

TLU fell 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 to Trinity.

In the loss to Austin, Savhannah Kitchens led TLU with nine kills and four blocks. Day added eight kills and 23 digs.

The search for Wonka Bars continues in Seguin with SHS Children's Show Curtains open today for Willy Wonka, Jr.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- You will want to grab your golden ticket for tonight's debut of Willy Wonka, Jr. Curtains open tonight for the Seguin High School Theatre Arts performance. However before opening up for the public, the annual Children's Show will take the stage for local elementary school students who will be traveling to the campus for the fall production.

School officials say Willy Wonka Jr. brings to life much of what many might remember in the 1971 (Gene Wilder) or 2005 (Johnny Depp) film adaptation of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The story tells "the story of an only child, Charlie Bucket, who

receives a Golden Ticket" and visits the chocolate factory with four other children from around the world.

They say the cast is especially excited about opening its curtains for Seguin ISD students.

Settlement Reached In Ohio Opioid Case (Cleveland, OH) -- Four drug manufacturers reach a last-minute settlement to avoid a trial over the opioid crisis. The trial, set to begin Monday, came as Ohio's Cuyahoga and Summit counties were seeking eight billion dollars for treatment programs and health care expenses. Some 400-thousand overdose deaths between 1997 and 2017 are attributed to opioids. AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, McKesson and Teva are involved in the settlement. It's not clear if a fifth defendant, pharmacy chain operator Walgreens Boots Alliance, was also part of the settlement.

Researchers Find Link Between Dairy Products and Prostate Cancer (Undated) -- Mayo Clinic researchers are finding that high consumption of dairy is associated with increased risk of prostate cancer. The research published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic

Association found that there was decreased risk of prostate cancer associated with plant-based diets. The researchers reviewed 47 studies that comprised more than one-million total participants to understand the risks of prostate cancer associated with plant-based and animal-based foods. In the United States alone, more than 30-thousand men succumb to prostate cancer annually.

NJ Senator Menendez Highlights Lifetime Extension Of Federal Autism Benefits (Paramus, NJ) -- New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is highlighting the lifetime extension of federal autism benefits. The bipartisan legislation was signed into law by President Trump earlier this month, meaning services in terms of education, employment training and health care no longer expire at adulthood. Senator Menendez notes New Jersey reports more cases of autism than any other state, with onein-34, as opposed to the national average of one-in-60. He adds that the benefits are funded either directly by the government or through organizations, offering cash strapped parents a way forward as previously they expired at the age of 21.

Beth was born on August 31, 1950 in Cisco, Texas to Charles and Anita Joyce (Bilderback) Woodward.

LeRoy Vincent Fey, age 72 of Seguin, passed away on October 15, 2019. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 4 p.m. followed by the recitation of the holy rosary under the auspices of the Knights of Columbus at 6 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel. The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Dennis Darilek officiating. Private interment will be held with military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.

LeRoy was born on May 6, 1947 in Guadalupe County, TX, to Hugo P. Fey and Elise (Scharmann) Fey. He was an active and faithful member of St. James Catholic Church. LeRoy served his country honorably in the United States Army. He started work for Ewing-Records and retired at Meadow Burke in Converse TX as a Production Supervisor for most of his 44 years.

LeRoy was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3412 in Seguin where he served as Grand Knight from 1997 – 1999 and was named Knight of the Year 2016 – 2017 and also a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus #2055. LeRoy enjoyed memberships in the American Legion H.U. Wood Post 245 in Seguin, and the McQueeney Lions Club.

He enjoyed being the facilitator for bingo at the American Legion Post meeting many people, he also enjoyed volunteering at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, and the Guadalupe County

Children’s Advocacy Center.

LeRoy loved the outdoors and had a great love for his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews. LeRoy was preceded in death by his first wife of 34 years, Mary A. Fey, his parents, brothers, Frank and Edward Fey, his stepson, John (Tim) Sims and his brother-in-law, Robert Courtney. Survivors include his loving wife, Jo Ann Calhoun Fey; grandson, John J. Sims and wife Sarah Anderson, granddaughter, Tiffany J. and husband Davey Hagen; great-granddaughters, Caydence Hagen, Aryia and Devina Sims; sisters, Estella and husband James Wiley, Alice Courtney, and Rose Marie and husband Butch Homann; brothers, James Fey, Jerome and wife Janice Fey, and Joseph and wife Lynda Fey; aunts, Angela Jandt and Anita Fey; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

William Henry Ahlstrom, Jr. William Henry Ahlstrom, Jr. (Bill) of Gonzales, Texas, passed away October 17, 2019 at the age of 80. Bill was born June 25, 1939, to William Sr. and Catherine Wilhelm Ahlstrom in San Antonio, where he grew up and graduated from Alamo Heights High School. He joined the Marines and served from 1958 to 1962 at Camp Pendleton in California, and in Guam. In 1961 he married his first wife, Sudie. He worked with his father and brothers for nearly 20 years as a union carpenter in and around San Antonio. This work brought him to Seguin, working on the Economy Furniture Building, which is now the Guadalupe County Justice Center. Settling south of Seguin, Bill and his wife open the original Mesquite Junction in 1976. In 1978, Sudie was tragically killed, leaving him with four children and a business. He continued with Mesquite Junction into the early 1990's, the last few years in partnership with his youngest son, Robert (Billy) Ahlstrom.

During that time he remarried, and lost his second wife, Toni, to breast cancer. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, John Ahlstrom, Dorthy Holgate, and PFC Robert Ahlstrom; wives Sudie Ahlstrom and Toni Ahlstrom; son James Ahlstrom; grandsons Bryce Bennett and Collin Bennett. He is survived by children Deanna Weers (Mark), Catherine Ahlstrom, and Robert Ahlstrom.
