Navarro ISD thanks city for roadwork Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is getting big thanks this week from the Navarro ISD. The city recently completed a road striping project along Link Road, near it’s intersection with State Highway 123.

Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley shared her thanks during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council.

Epley says the work is important to the district and it helps to better define the traffic flow in that area.

“I just wanted to take a moment to thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts for the work done on Link Road this weekend. That road, as you know, is a primary gateway to several of our schools. And to have it striped appropriately so that our families know where to go, and our young drivers -- as they learn to drive -- how to navigate. That really meant a lot,” said Epley.

Epley says the work was coordinated well by the city’s Public Works Department, and it’s already making a difference for the district.

“I do want to specifically send a very important thank you to John Donnelly and his crew, who worked diligently, and communicated well with us throughout the process. So please pass that on to him and his crew. They did a fantastic job, and we very much appreciative,” said Epley.

Seguin city staff recognized with state, NATIONAL AWARDS

(Seguin) -- More city officials are getting high praise from their peers. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker announced three special awards that were recently handed out to city staff. Parker says the city’s electric utilities department recently had members of its team participate in a national contest, and they apparently shined during the competition. He says the Journeyman Team of A.J. Martinez, Eli Santos and Derek Ranft put their skills.

“They competed in the National Lineman Rodeo in Kansas City, and they were 52 out of 290-something teams that competed. They finished 10th in the municipal division and beat out every other Texas municipal city. So, they did a really great job against a lot of stiff competition,” said Parker.

Parker also recognized City Engineer Melissa Reynolds. Reynolds was recently named one of the “Top 50 Women Leaders in Construction & Civil Works for 2023.” The recognition comes from WomenWeAdmire. com, which recently released the list. Parker says Reynolds, who previously worked for the city of New Braunfels, has been an incredible asset to this community.

“Melissa has over 15 years of experience working in our extremely high-growth region, building and maintaining public-private partnerships for the greater good. She has a passion for improving the future of Texas by ensuring smart growth and responsible development

by preserving floodplains and natural ecosystems while finding innovative means of creating economic returns. So, this is one of our recent steals from another community, and she has just been a godsend to us, because she’s been through some of these high-level developments, and I just can’t say enough about her willingness to work through issues and get things done.

We’ve got a lot on our plate in the engineering world. I think everybody’s aware of that, with development and the big projects that we have going on Rudeloff Road, Cordova Road, GLO, $38 million in drainage projects going on, dam projects, (and) all kinds of things. I can’t say enough about her and her team, and it’s well deserved (honor),” said Parker.

Parker also again recognized the SEDC staff.

As reported earlier this week, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation recently earned the Community Economic Development Award, or CEDA. The Texas Economic Development Council award recognized the SEDC for its successful recruitment of the Maruichi Stainless Tube Texas. The company is making a $75 million capital investment in Seguin at its new facility being built in the Rio Nogales Industrial Park. The company is also expected to create more than 100 new jobs.

Parker recognized the staff during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin City Council.

(Seguin) -- Get ready to hit the open road whether it be by motorcycle, Jeep or car.

Participants are being sought for the 4th Annual Kiki Camarena Run Ride to Be Drug Free Motorcycle Run and Scavenger Hunt. The event is scheduled to begin this Saturday at the American Legion Post #245.

The fundraiser is being hosted by the Guadalupe Valley Young Marines in celebration of Red Ribbon Week and its Fight Against Drugs. The event was created in memory of Kiki Camarena, a DEA agent and Marine that was murdered by a drug cartel. Today, Red Ribbon Week is the longestrunning drug awareness and prevention program in the nation.

Helping to continue its long-standing history has always been of importance for the Young Marines. Unit Commander Dina Dillon says this weekend’s fundraiser has been shaped to give everyone the chance to show their support.

"The American Legion has been very helpful in that they are handling the motorcycle run itself this weekend. It's going to be a trip up to Wimberley and then back. If you have a motorcycle, you can participate that way. If you don't and have a car or Jeep or any movement like that, you can participate in the scavenger hunt. We have 35 different spots that you can go to and try and find and we are going to do it by picture. Marines, pg. 4

Seguin’s Pumpkin Patch at First Methodist Church will be full of blessings during its annual Blessing of the Animals this Saturday.

Rev. Cathe Evins senior pastor says families are invited to bring their animals for a special day in the patch.

“Of course, a lot of people bring their pets to the pumpkin patch because they are also part of the family pictures.

So, we do recognize that people certainly love their animals and see them as family members and so when we do a blessing of the animals, it’s an opportunity to have people come and we say a blessing over the animals and we remind people of all the scriptures that are related to animals -- Scripture tells us that Christ will return on a white horse and that God saved the animals of Nineveh and that Jonah, of course, was saved by a whale and so there are so many stories about animals in Scripture and then, we actually give them a little tag for the dog’s collar that says I’m blessed and then we take

a picture with them if they so choose,” said Evins.

Evins says visiting the patch this Saturday may also mean taking home more than just a pumpkin.

“We also have that day Seguin Animal Rescue here with pets that are available for adoption and we bless them as well if they want to be blessed. Some of them are a little bit excited and nervous to be here in their cages and having lots of people around but we hope people will come out and maybe find a new pet that needs a forever home and then also bring the pets that they already have to be blessed and of course enjoy the pumpkin patch and we have a rummage sale going on at the same time in our church parking lot so it’s going to be a great day on Saturday for people to come out and enjoy those activities,” said Evins.

Traffic along Link Road is a challenge for parents and students in the Navarro ISD. The hope is that the striping will help to better define how traffic should flow in that highly congested area. Link Road is in need of widening, but that’s going to take many additional dollars and a coordination between the city, the school district and Guadalupe County to get that done. A growing portion of the Navarro ISD lies within the city of Seguin, or within the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction.

Open Air Artisan Market to be hosted by Teatro (Seguin) – Teatro’s De Mano A Mano Open Air Artisan Market returns this weekend to the historic Plataforma Hidalgo located on the grounds of Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

TLU Volleyball Falls to Southwestern, 3-1 Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran volleyball dropped their mid-week match to Southwestern, 3-1, Wednesday night at the Robertson Center in Georgetown.Texas Lutheran falls to 17-7 and 7-4 in the SCAC while Southwestern improves to 9-11 and 4-8 in the SCAC - avoiding potential elimination from SCAC Tournament contention in the process.

Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) led the Bulldogs with 11 kills. Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) would join her in double figures with 10 kills.

Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) added eight kills and a team-high four blocks.

Faith Coldewey (Floresville/Floresville) would

lead TLU with 20 digs while Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) and Julia Chew (Cypress/ Cy-Fair) would each record double-doubles with Chew recording a team-high 18 assists.

The first set was back-and-forth with neither team willing to give the other a distinct advantage before the Pirates put the set away 26-24.

Texas Lutheran returned to form in the second set taking down the Pirates, 25-19, to even the match 1-1.

The Pirates would cruise through the next two sets to put the Bulldogs down, 3-1.

The Bulldogs (9-4) will return to Memorial Gymnasium for the final time this season on Tuesday, Oct. 24, for a rematch with the Pirates. The

www.SEGUINTODAY.com Forrest Wayne Gunckel, 68, of Seguin, Texas, lost his battle with cancer on September 17, 2023. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Forrest expressed his love for his family and said, “Ive had a good run and I’m going to see my

buddies.”

Forrest was born on February 2, 1955 at the former Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, to Shirley Rose Schultz Gunckel (daughter of August (Pat) and Rosa Schultz), and Larry Wayne Gunckel. He spent most of his childhood years at his father’s military assignments, settling in Seguin, Texas upon his father’s retirement from the Air Force.

Forrest attended Seguin High School, working part-time for the Koehler Company. After high school, as a full-time employee, he quickly acquired cabinet making skills and demonstrated that he was a talented craftsman. In his early 20’s, Forrest decided to start his own business and went on to have a successful career as the owner of Gunckel Architectural Millworks.

As the business grew, he acquired a warehouse at the company’s current location on West Kingsbury Street.

He set it up with state-of-the-art equipment and began to take on large commercial projects. With a passion for woodwork, he dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft and becoming a successful entrepreneur.

His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded by his colleagues and clients.

Even though business was his primary interest throughout his life, Forrest still found time for other pursuits and had a passion for golf, fishing, gardening and cooking, with a special talent for barbecuing.

Forrest’s dream was to retire in Rockport, where he could fish to his heart’s content. It is there that his final resting place will be, with his ashes to be scattered at sea.

Forrest had a vibrant personality and was especially known for his wit and sense of humor. He had a special bond with his dog, Jax, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Forrest will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Linsey Amstead; son-in-law, Brent Amstead; and grandkids Kylee and Asher. He leaves behind his father, Larry Gunckel; and stepmother, Jodi Gunckel; sisters, Cindy and husband Avery Curnel, Terry Atkinson and partner Jim Roe; and stepsister, Cathi Barnes. He is preceded by his mother, Shirley Gunckel; and brother, Gary Gunckel.

A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor and remember Forrest’s life on October 28th at 12 p.m. a Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar St. in Seguin, Texas. In lieu of floweres, the family request that memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the American Cancer Society.

Johanna “Jody” Green Schievelbein, age 87 of Kingsbury, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Monday, October 16, 2023.

Jody was born on September 25, 1936, in Kingsbury to Martha Mae (Cockrill) and Tillman Jesse (T. J.) Green.

Jody was a graduate of Prairie Lea High School where she played basketball. She served as a cub scout leader for Troop 107. Jody and Lee Roy enjoyed membership in the Happy Soles Square Dance Club, participating in the Roadrunner Camping Group and team bowling. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and as a hospice volunteer. Her favorite times were with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jody is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jesse Green, Tillman Green, and Lewis Green, and sisters, Maxine Nickell Raske, Annabelle Miller, and Lizzie Mae Lorenz.

Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, LeeRoy Schievelbein; sons, Walter “Wally” Schievelbein (wife Julie), Timothy “Tim” Schievelbein (wife Janice), and Jessie Schievelbein (wife Katharine); daughter, Cathy Schriewer (husband Kevin); grandchildren, Adam Schievelbein (wife Tyler), Matt Schriewer (wife Kari), Jeff Schievelbein (wife Gail), Robert Schievelbein (wife Samantha), Kendra Mooney (husband Hollis), Megan Schievelbein, Stephen Schriewer, Tim Schriewer, Danielle Benavides (husband Victor), Randall Schievelbein, and Hannah Maltony (husband Reed); great-grandchildren – Emma Schievelbein, Declan Schievelbein, Jacob Johnson, Jacey Schriewer, Micah Schriewer, Aspen Schievelbein, Ashlyn Schievelbein, Haley Benavides, Victor Benavides Jr., Alison Schievelbein, Luke Schievelbein, Samuel Mooney, Wesley Mooney, Eli Mooney, Owen Mooney, John Paul Mooney, and two more on the way; sisters-inlaw, Annie Mae Ebert and Nancy Seiler and husband Glen; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends; loving caregiver, Faye Thompson.

Beverlye Bukowski Rea (1921 - 2023) Beverlye was a vibrant, fullhearted mother and friend. She passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on October 13. Beverlye came into this world on June 7, 1921, by parents Edward B. Cox and Rena M. McBride in Lafayette, Louisiana. They moved as a family to Houston where she

lived most of her life.

She attended the Incarnate Word School of Nursing, earning her RN degree and practicing at St. Joseph Hospital. She met her husband, Dr. Lucian Bukowski, at the hospital, marrying in 1940. They were married for 57 years and had four children, Beverlye Ann, Lucian “Buck”, Janet, and Lynn. She later married Frank Rea, whom she adored dancing and golfing with.

Known affectionately to many as “Momie”, even outside the family, Beverlye lived a full life of 102 years. She was a devoted Catholic, avid golfer, and keen bridge player. She loved to entertain and enjoyed traveling, particularly with her three daughters. She cherished time in McQueeney, Texas among friends and family where she spent her final years.

Beverlye is survived and loved by her three daughters, Beverlye Mueller, Janet McDonald and husband Tim, and Lynn Carothers; eight grandchildren, Charles “Chaz” Mueller and wife Susan, Todd Mueller and wife Amy, Kipp Mueller and wife Kim, Lucian Bukowski, Dana Bukowski, Col. Shane McDonald and wife KaCee, Blair Hanosh and husband Aaron, Chelsey Hussey and husband Matthew; sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband’s Lucian M. Bukowski MD and Frank Rea; son Lucian M. Bukowski, Jr. “Buck”, sons-in-law Charles “Buzz” Mueller and John Carothers.

The family wishes to thank her many loving caregivers including Tina, Christina and Dee from Caring Senior Service, as well as the staff from Hope Hospice.

An informal gathering will be held on Saturday, October 21 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at her home in McQueeney, and a memorial service at St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston on Tuesday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception.

Felipe Aguirre Sr., a beloved member of the community known for his hard work, generosity, and dedication to his family, passed away on October 12, 2023. He was born on August 23, 1930, in San Marcos, TX, to Aurelio and Petra Gallegos Aguirre.

Felipe’s career spanned many years, beginning as a butcher at Dyess Meat Market.

He later worked at Baenzingers and True Value Hardware before finding employment with the City of Seguin, where he eventually retired. Even after retirement, Felipe continued to support his family by working at Walmart and delivering food for Meals on Wheels.

His entrepreneurial spirit shone through as well, as he owned, Aguirre’s Seguin Grocery Drive In store, Aguirre’s Ballroom and Eloisa’s Tamales restaurant – establishments that left an indelible mark on the Hispanic business community.

Family was always paramount for Felipe. He cherished spending time with his loved ones and played an active role in raising many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gathering everyone together for a barbecue was one of his favorite ways to create lasting memories.

Felipe’s warm heart and supportive nature earned him the title of “Legend” among those who knew him best. He touched the lives of countless families in the surrounding neighborhoods through his kindness and generosity. Whether it was lending a helping hand or offering words of encouragement, Felipe was always there for others.

Felipe’s memory will live on through his loving wife of 68 years, Eloisa Gutierrez Aguirre, and his children Anna Castillo, Ricky “Cuz” Aguirre (Diane), Felipe Aguirre Jr. (Doris), Isabel Aguirre Rodriguez, Gloria Estrada, Reynaldo Aguirre, and Roland Aguirre Sr. He is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 47 greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Felipe Aguirre Sr.’s passion for life was evident in everything he did. When he wasn’t spending quality time with his family, you would often find him enjoying his favorite hobbies, which included maintaining his cattle at the ranch, baseball, barbecuing, and constructing various objects. He was a Jack of all trades. He also had a deep love for fishing and playing the accordion – talents that brought joy to those around him.

In addition to leaving behind a grieving family, Felipe is preceded in death by his parents Aurelio and Petra Gallegos Aguirre, as well as his brothers Raymond Aguirre and Agapito Aguirre. His 1st son who was a twin was also called home before him.

Felipe Aguirre Sr.’s Funeral Services will be held at Palmer Mortuary & Cremations in Seguin, TX. The visitation will take place on October 19th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Mass will be held on October 20th at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. The interment will follow at Santo Tomas Cemetery.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Felipe Aguirre III, Rolando Aguirre Jr., Alan Aguirre Sr., Eric Garcia, Adrian Rodriguez, Dylan Glenewinkel, Reynaldo “Rey Rey” Aguirre Jr., and Adrian Aguirre.

The Reverend Don Douglas Vlasak, age 94, passed away on October 15, 2023.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Marcus Bigott officiating.

Don was born on February 22, 1929, to James and Libbie (Svoboda) Vlasak in San Antonio, TX. As the Great Depression started, his family moved several times and ended up in Corpus Christi, TX. An avid student of science, young Don eventually came to know the Lord. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Clarence Bohls. At Texas Lutheran College, he met his beloved wife, Elinor Wehe. They were married at Grace Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX in 1954 just as he started his 4th year at Wartburg Theological Seminary.

He was ordained at his home church, First Lutheran in Corpus Christi, TX on June 19, 1955, and soon after accepted his first pastoral call to La Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey in Alice, TX. Through the years he, with immeasurable support from his wife, served Lutheran churches in Alice, Freer, Mathis, Tynan, Shelby, Fayetteville, Priddy, Comanche, and Rosebud, TX. A true servant of the Lord, he was also an on-call hospital chaplain at Scott and White in Temple, TX. He maintained a license as an emergency medical technician after serving

on the volunteer ambulance service in the rural community of Industry, TX. Don had many hobbies including gardening, tree grafting, restoring antique cars, cultivating native grasses, and refurbishing pipe and reed organs. He had a lifelong love of languages. He spoke fluent Spanish, passable German, and some Greek.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Elinor Louise (Wehe) Vlasak and his sister, Joyce Margaret (Vlasak) Haase. He will be sorely missed by his survivors which include his children, Dr. Gloria Joyce Haug and husband Darrell, Dr. Mark Charles Vlasak and wife Camille, RN, Donna Louise Vlasak, RN, FNP and spouse Cynthia Hinojosa, RN, Dr. Janice Emelia Weinman Seider and husband Kevin, Dr. Marie Elaine Vlasak and husband Dr. Thang Pham, and James Louis Vlasak and wife Jodi; grandchildren, David Aaron Haug and wife Kelli, Erin Lindsey Vlasak, Lauren Michelle Haug Lys and husband Rev. Jonathan, Logan Douglas Vlasak, Connor Van Vlasak, Dr. Janelle Brooke Weinman, Joshua Lance Vlasak, Kathryn Marie Ngoc Pham, Johanna Leigh Vlasak, and Matthew Victor Ngoc Pham; greatgrandchildren, Micah Gilek Haug, Jonah Edward Lys, Jacey Alexandria Haug, and Lucas Mitchell Lys; brother, Lanny Vlasak and wife Marge; four nieces; two nephews; and numerous other family members and many friends.

Ola Mae Baker, age 92, of Kingsbury, passed away on October 12, 2023. She was born February 20th, 1931 in Seguin, Texas to Roy and Viola (Adcock) Reneau.

She married Glenn H. Baker on October 15th, 1949. The two enjoyed their early years with their 4 boys, fishing on the San Marcos River at their camp house.

Ola enjoyed cooking and made many good meals on the river and at home for her family and friends. That love for cooking continued throughout her life. She had the best recipes and everyone loved her baked goods and candy. If it didn’t turn out, she didn’t mind throwing it out the door and trying it again! She loved reading and collecting recipes, and had an enormous library of cookbooks she’d picked up on her travels as well as local churches and organizations.

She loved working in her yard. Even in her later years, she would drag the water hose around, ensuring everything was watered and healthy, and always had such beautiful flowers adorning the fences and her backyard.

She and Glenn loved traveling the States and Canada in their motorhome.

Still, Ola cooked their meals while traveling, and every meal on those wheels and at home ended with some kind of wonderful dessert!

She bowled in her younger years, never settling for mediocrity, and had many trophies and pictures for her 200+ scores.

She enjoyed visiting with her lifelong friend, Erna Bell Imhoff, and they

still visited until her death.

Her greatest enjoyment was seeing and visiting with her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were the light of her life.

Ola was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, sons, Dennis and wife Debra, Barry Baker, sister Bettie Jo Snyder, brother-in-law Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law Bill Perryman.

She is survived by their two sons, Ronnie and wife Becky Baker of Kingsbury, and Jay Baker of Georgetown; grandkids Randall and wife Tonya Baker, Ryan Baker, Jayme Baker Kane and daughter Bonnye, Mallory Baker Weitzman and daughters Haddie, Addy B and Saylor Weitzman, Cayden and wife Karlee Baker, Quinten Baker and friend Halle Scheib, Bryan Baker, Brooke, and Lauren Baker; brother, Butch Reneau and wife Susie; sister-inlaw Patricia Baker Perryman; brother-in-law Charles Snyder; along with many nieces and nephews, who she loved deeply.

The family would like to thank Brookdale North Assisted Living staff and GVNC Seguin for the kind care they showed our mother.

Two New Cases Of MPox Confirmed In North Carolina (Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina Health officials have confirmed at least two new cases of the m-pox virus within the past six weeks. They also said that traces of the virus have been found in one-out-of-twelve wastewater sites across the state. Doctors continue to urge people in high risk groups to get vaccinated against the disease, which is primarily spread through skin-to-skin contact.

Dallas City Council Reexamines City Policy Of Fluoridation Of Drinking Water (Dallas, TX) -- A Dallas City Council committee is looking into the city’s longtime practice of fluoridating the drinking water supply. Social media is spreading stories about a Canadian study linking fluoride with a lower IQ. Dr. Mary Swift, past president of the Dallas County Dental Society, told the council’s quality of life committee that the claim is baseless. County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Philip Huang said the CDC recently updated the recommended amount of fluoride in drinking water. Dallas has been fluoridating its water since 1966.

Diaper Shortage ‘Crisis’ For Low Income Families (Portland, OR) -- About one third of U.S. parents have trouble getting diapers. A combination of factors seem to be at work, according to the Institute for Research on Poverty. Inflation, increased demand, and fewer diapers being offered by low-income service providers. They recommend cloth diapers for those who have ready access to washers. Diapers can cost from 70 to-150 dollars a month per child.

Report: Climate-Caused Wildfires Cost the United States Up to $900 Billion (Washington, D.C.) -- A new study released by the Joint Economic Committee of Congress estimates climate change-induced wildfires are costing the United States hundreds of billions of dollars. California Congressman Mike Thompson says the study makes clear the urgent need to address the climate crisis to mitigate future wildfires. The Democrat says the cost range was calculated from estimates related to property damage, direct and indirect deaths and injuries, health impacts from wildfire smoke, income loss, watershed pollution, and a range of other factors.
