SEDC receives prestigious award for recruiting efforts

(Seguin) -- The SEDC is being recognized for its success in recruiting top notch industries to the city of Seguin.

The Seguin Economic Development Corporation is the 2023 recipient of the Texas Economic Development Council Community Economic Development Award, or CEDA. The award was presented in the Transferability Category.

The SEDC earned this recognition for the successful recruitment of Maruichi Stainless Tube Texas into the Rio Nogales Industrial Park in Seguin.

In the second half of 2022, the SEDC team was recognized for working aggressively on the negotiation and finalization of the successful recruitment of Maruichi to Seguin; however, the genesis of the project --

according to city officials -- can actually be traced back to 2014.

They say investments in infrastructure by the city and the SEDC, between 2014 and 2019, ensured that the Rio Nogales Industrial Park had access to industrial grade electric, water, and wastewater utilities, as well as regional detention to maximize their ability to develop that land, and immediate access to Interstate 10 via 8th Street.

City Manager Steve Parker says this award is just an overall representation of how the city does business.

“To me this award really signifies the fact that Seguin has done really well in attracting high paying industry jobs.

Spirit of Joy prepares to keep families warm

Neighborhood clothing distribution event set for Saturday Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A local church is trying to stay one step ahead of Old Man Winter. Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church will be distributing cold-weather clothing this weekend from 9 a.m. to noon.

Church Secretary Cynthia Points says what initially started off as a clothing rack has now turned into an annual effort to keep local families warm.

“We are really trying to direct not only people in this community but especially the homeless who have no access to jackets and mittens and scarves and sweaters and sweatshirts that they can either layer or portable if you will. And so this is our second real concerted effort to get this out,” said Points.

Points says the effort has since been dubbed the “Cold Weather Clothing Neighborhood Distribution” event. She says it not only provides opportunities for people to receive warm clothing but also donate them.

“What I want folks to know is that there is going to be at least enough clothing choices for men and women and young girls and baby girls. That’s what we seem to get the most donations varying degrees of thickness, some are zippers, some are pullovers, and some are jackets.

We will be stationed outside on the corner sidewalk of Dolle Avenue and Medlin, we are just one block west of the police station and we will be outside. It will be

very visible by our church and as to how we get our donations -- we are always accepting donations, not just warm outerwear but we also take any kind of clothing donations so as long as it is gently used and clean, we will take it because we do hope to open up a clothing ministry within the church open to outside individuals on an appointment basis,” said Points.

Unfortunately, Points says items such as coats and jackets can be costly and is asking that folks help spread the word of this ministry so that those who need them, get them.

“Those are the biggest ticket items -- jackets and they are hard for people to get even at the thrift stores or what have you around town. They are still pricey and so here we have everything donated and we get them all through the year. I do personally take them. I’ll go pick them up from people if they want to donate something.

So, if somebody sees this that is interested in donating, then we be happy to take those at the same time from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday,” said Points.

The Cold Weather Clothing Neighborhood Distribution is only one of several ministries coordinated and hosted throughout the year by the local church.

SEDC, continued. these companies make a huge difference in changing the dynamics of our community. Over the last five years, the average wages have increased by 28.5 percent so we are right up there with Bexar County and San Antonio.

Now with the average change in wages over the last five years and it’s because it’s projects like this that are bringing in these higher end, more robust and technical jobs -- a lot of these are technology-based jobs, a lot of robotics involved in these manufactures that we have here today that you wouldn’t even think about and so when you comply these things, it just makes a huge change in the peoples’ economy. The school district, for example, they would not be able to do a $150 million bond issuance for new projects and not have to increase the tax rate if we did not have this level of manufacturing in our community,” said Parker.

Having a shovel-ready site immediately available was key in the recruitment of the Maruichi project.

Upon completion of construction, the project will represent a total capital investment of at least $75 million and will result in the creation of at least 106 new jobs over a two-year period.

Parker says the creation of jobs and capital from this project will have far-reaching economic impacts on the city, region, state and will position the companies to be more competitive on a global level.

Parker says the CEDA (see-duh) award is also an illustration of the team effort put forth daily by SEDC

Executive Director Josh Schneuker and his office. He says the SEDC along with all other city departments continue to make these types of manufacturing recruitments successful.

“Josh is one of the rising stars in the whole entire state of Texas. People know him. Commercial developers and people in the governor’s office, they all recognize him as being one of the pioneering leaders of Texas when it comes to economic development. So, that’s why we get a lot of first looks at projects because they know we are able to put our money where our mouth is and Josh and his team are just so responsive in everything that they do that people get this warm feeling like ‘hey, they are not going to let me down. I want to choose them.’ Because at the end of the day of them being able to deliver that project to their bondholders, their finance (holders), and so forth, Josh and them put their money where their mouth is and gets things done -- the entire team because it really goes through permitting -- you’ve got engineering and planning to help you step up and deliver as well. It’s a real team environment here but Josh and his team do a good job for our community,” said Parker.

The recipient communities in each population category were recognized for extraordinary accomplishments in meeting the criteria set forth in the nomination process.

This is the second time that the SEDC has received the CEDA in less than five years. The previous award was received in 2020 for the recruitment of Teijin Automotive Technologies and United Alloy.

(Seguin) -- Today is the last day to enjoy this year’s Buck Fever event at the Seguin Coliseum.

Family events continue with activities such as fishing tank, pellet gun, rock wall and archery.

The winners in this year’s horns contest plus prize drawings will also be announced today at 6:30 p.m.

Setting up shop throughout the Coliseum will be a number of vendors, exhibits plus a general store.

Buck Fever committee members also invite folks over for dinner with a handful of food trucks parked on site. They include Grouchy Mama’s,

Wicked Brisket and Dilly Deli.

Proceeds from the 38th annual Buck Fever fundraiser go to benefit the youth of Guadalupe County.

Organizers say the mission is to “bring together outdoor hunting and fishing exhibits and provide a place where outdoorsmen (and) women can come together and exchange bragging rights and hunting and fishing experiences” and “to educate the youth about the wonderful world of the outdoors and to learn to protect, preserve and enjoy the wildlife, fish and all of the native resources.”

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Children six and under are free.

Gates open today at 5:30 p.m.

TLU men’s and women’s golf compete at Coastal Collegiate Classic in Oregon Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

GLENEDEN BEACH, OR -- The Texas Lutheran women’s golf team finished second at the Coastal Collegiate Classic Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs finished the tournament shooting 264-over par.

Junior Braydee Frederick (Normangee/ Normangee) ended round three Tuesday coming in third place. Frederick had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday finishing 11-over par.

Senior Audre Garza (New Braunfels/Canyon) and freshman Jordyn Ponewash (Flatonia/ Flatonia) finished in a tie for ninth - concluding the tournament at 73-over par. The top ten finish is the first of Ponewash’s career.

Jacqueline Springs (Seguin/Navarro) and Mireia Bustamante (Austin/McNeil) finished tied for 11th with a three round score of 294 (+81).

GLENEDEN BEACH, OR -- Tobey Wills (Richmond/Foster) earned his third top ten finish of the fall season on Tuesday, finishing tied for second place, while the Texas Lutheran men’s golf team finished fourth at the Coastal Collegiate Classic at the Salishan Golf Links in Gleneden Beach, Oregon.

TLU shot 28-over as a team on Tuesday to finish the tournament 73-over overall. Wills led the Bulldogs Tuesday with a four-over final round.

Wills’ second place finish with a score of 222 (+9) led the Bulldogs individually while Caleb Kruse (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) would narrowly miss a top ten finish, tying for 11th at 20-over over 54 holes.

Cody O’Brien (Houston/St. John XXIII College Prep) would be the final Bulldog in the top

15 as the Houston native shot 22-over overall and placed tied for 15th.

Tyler Givilancz (Schertz/Clemens) notched a 7-over round in round three to finish the Classic 26-over and in 19th place.

Johannes Chang (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/Tenby International School) shot a 54hole score of 31-over to place tied for 23rd.

TLU will be back in action Oct. 23-24 as they conclude their fall season with the Hardin-Simmons Invitational at the Diamondback National Golf Club in Abilene, Texas.

www.SEGUINTODAY.com Forrest Wayne Gunckel, 68, of Seguin, Texas, lost his battle with cancer on September 17, 2023. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Forrest expressed his love for his family and said, “Ive had a good run and I’m going to see my

buddies.”

Forrest was born on February 2, 1955 at the former Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, to Shirley Rose Schultz Gunckel (daughter of August (Pat) and Rosa Schultz), and Larry Wayne Gunckel. He spent most of his childhood years at his father’s military assignments, settling in Seguin, Texas upon his father’s retirement from the Air Force.

Forrest attended Seguin High School, working part-time for the Koehler Company. After high school, as a full-time employee, he quickly acquired cabinet making skills and demonstrated that he was a talented craftsman. In his early 20’s, Forrest decided to start his own business and went on to have a successful career as the owner of Gunckel Architectural Millworks.

As the business grew, he acquired a warehouse at the company’s current location on West Kingsbury Street.

He set it up with state-of-the-art equipment and began to take on large commercial projects. With a passion for woodwork, he dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft and becoming a successful entrepreneur.

His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded by his colleagues and clients.

Even though business was his primary interest throughout his life, Forrest still found time for other pursuits and had a passion for golf, fishing, gardening and cooking, with a special talent for barbecuing.

Forrest’s dream was to retire in Rockport, where he could fish to his heart’s content. It is there that his final resting place will be, with his ashes to be scattered at sea.

Forrest had a vibrant personality and was especially known for his wit and sense of humor. He had a special bond with his dog, Jax, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Forrest will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Linsey Amstead; son-in-law, Brent Amstead; and grandkids Kylee and Asher. He leaves behind his father, Larry Gunckel; and stepmother, Jodi Gunckel; sisters, Cindy and husband Avery Curnel, Terry Atkinson and partner Jim Roe; and stepsister, Cathi Barnes. He is preceded by his mother, Shirley Gunckel; and brother, Gary Gunckel.

A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor and remember Forrest’s life on October 28th at 12 p.m. a Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar St. in Seguin, Texas. In lieu of floweres, the family request that memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the American Cancer Society.

Johanna “Jody” Green Schievelbein, age 87 of Kingsbury, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Monday, October 16, 2023.

Jody was born on September 25, 1936, in Kingsbury to Martha Mae (Cockrill) and Tillman Jesse (T. J.) Green.

Jody was a graduate of Prairie Lea High School where she played basketball. She served as a cub scout leader for Troop 107. Jody and Lee Roy enjoyed membership in the Happy Soles Square Dance Club, participating in the Roadrunner Camping Group and team bowling. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and as a hospice volunteer. Her favorite times were with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jody is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jesse Green, Tillman Green, and Lewis Green, and sisters, Maxine Nickell Raske, Annabelle Miller, and Lizzie Mae Lorenz.

Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, LeeRoy Schievelbein; sons, Walter “Wally” Schievelbein (wife Julie), Timothy “Tim” Schievelbein (wife Janice), and Jessie Schievelbein (wife Katharine); daughter, Cathy Schriewer (husband Kevin); grandchildren, Adam Schievelbein (wife Tyler), Matt Schriewer (wife Kari), Jeff Schievelbein (wife Gail), Robert Schievelbein (wife Samantha), Kendra Mooney (husband Hollis), Megan Schievelbein, Stephen Schriewer, Tim Schriewer, Danielle Benavides (husband Victor), Randall Schievelbein, and Hannah Maltony (husband Reed); great-grandchildren – Emma Schievelbein, Declan Schievelbein, Jacob Johnson, Jacey Schriewer, Micah Schriewer, Aspen Schievelbein, Ashlyn Schievelbein, Haley Benavides, Victor Benavides Jr., Alison Schievelbein, Luke Schievelbein, Samuel Mooney, Wesley Mooney, Eli Mooney, Owen Mooney, John Paul Mooney, and two more on the way; sisters-inlaw, Annie Mae Ebert and Nancy Seiler and husband Glen; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends; loving caregiver, Faye Thompson.

Beverlye Bukowski Rea (1921 - 2023) Beverlye was a vibrant, fullhearted mother and friend. She passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on October 13. Beverlye came into this world on June 7, 1921, by parents Edward B. Cox and Rena M. McBride in Lafayette, Louisiana. They moved as a family to Houston where she

lived most of her life.

She attended the Incarnate Word School of Nursing, earning her RN degree and practicing at St. Joseph Hospital. She met her husband, Dr. Lucian Bukowski, at the hospital, marrying in 1940. They were married for 57 years and had four children, Beverlye Ann, Lucian “Buck”, Janet, and Lynn. She later married Frank Rea, whom she adored dancing and golfing with.

Known affectionately to many as “Momie”, even outside the family, Beverlye lived a full life of 102 years. She was a devoted Catholic, avid golfer, and keen bridge player. She loved to entertain and enjoyed traveling, particularly with her three daughters. She cherished time in McQueeney, Texas among friends and family where she spent her final years.

Beverlye is survived and loved by her three daughters, Beverlye Mueller, Janet McDonald and husband Tim, and Lynn Carothers; eight grandchildren, Charles “Chaz” Mueller and wife Susan, Todd Mueller and wife Amy, Kipp Mueller and wife Kim, Lucian Bukowski, Dana Bukowski, Col. Shane McDonald and wife KaCee, Blair Hanosh and husband Aaron, Chelsey Hussey and husband Matthew; sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband’s Lucian M. Bukowski MD and Frank Rea; son Lucian M. Bukowski, Jr. “Buck”, sons-in-law Charles “Buzz” Mueller and John Carothers.

The family wishes to thank her many loving caregivers including Tina, Christina and Dee from Caring Senior Service, as well as the staff from Hope Hospice.

An informal gathering will be held on Saturday, October 21 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at her home in McQueeney, and a memorial service at St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston on Tuesday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception.

Felipe Aguirre Sr., a beloved member of the community known for his hard work, generosity, and dedication to his family, passed away on October 12, 2023. He was born on August 23, 1930, in San Marcos, TX, to Aurelio and Petra Gallegos Aguirre.

Felipe’s career spanned many years, beginning as a butcher at Dyess Meat Market.

He later worked at Baenzingers and True Value Hardware before finding employment with the City of Seguin, where he eventually retired. Even after retirement, Felipe continued to support his family by working at Walmart and delivering food for Meals on Wheels.

His entrepreneurial spirit shone through as well, as he owned, Aguirre’s Seguin Grocery Drive In store, Aguirre’s Ballroom and Eloisa’s Tamales restaurant – establishments that left an indelible mark on the Hispanic business community.

Family was always paramount for Felipe. He cherished spending time with his loved ones and played an active role in raising many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gathering everyone together for a barbecue was one of his favorite ways to create lasting memories.

Felipe’s warm heart and supportive nature earned him the title of “Legend” among those who knew him best. He touched the lives of countless families in the surrounding neighborhoods through his kindness and generosity. Whether it was lending a helping hand or offering words of encouragement, Felipe was always there for others.

Felipe’s memory will live on through his loving wife of 68 years, Eloisa Gutierrez Aguirre, and his children Anna Castillo, Ricky “Cuz” Aguirre (Diane), Felipe Aguirre Jr. (Doris), Isabel Aguirre Rodriguez, Gloria Estrada, Reynaldo Aguirre, and Roland Aguirre Sr. He is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 47 greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Felipe Aguirre Sr.’s passion for life was evident in everything he did. When he wasn’t spending quality time with his family, you would often find him enjoying his favorite hobbies, which included maintaining his cattle at the ranch, baseball, barbecuing, and constructing various objects. He was a Jack of all trades. He also had a deep love for fishing and playing the accordion – talents that brought joy to those around him.

In addition to leaving behind a grieving family, Felipe is preceded in death by his parents Aurelio and Petra Gallegos Aguirre, as well as his brothers Raymond Aguirre and Agapito Aguirre. His 1st son who was a twin was also called home before him.

Felipe Aguirre Sr.’s Funeral Services will be held at Palmer Mortuary & Cremations in Seguin, TX. The visitation will take place on October 19th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Mass will be held on October 20th at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. The interment will follow at Santo Tomas Cemetery.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Felipe Aguirre III, Rolando Aguirre Jr., Alan Aguirre Sr., Eric Garcia, Adrian Rodriguez, Dylan Glenewinkel, Reynaldo “Rey Rey” Aguirre Jr., and Adrian Aguirre.

The Reverend Don Douglas Vlasak, age 94, passed away on October 15, 2023.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Marcus Bigott officiating.

A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Moulton City Cemetery in Moulton, Texas. For those who desire, the services can be live-streamed at www.YouTube.com/@ emanuelslutheranseguin.

Don was born on February 22, 1929, to James and Libbie (Svoboda) Vlasak in San Antonio, TX. As the Great Depression started, his family moved several times and ended up in Corpus Christi, TX. An avid student of science, young Don eventually came to know the Lord. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Clarence Bohls. At Texas Lutheran College, he met his beloved wife, Elinor Wehe. They were married at Grace Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX in 1954 just as he started his 4th year at Wartburg Theological Seminary.

He was ordained at his home church, First Lutheran in Corpus Christi, TX on June 19, 1955, and soon after accepted his first pastoral call to La Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey in Alice, TX. Through the years he, with immeasurable support from his wife, served Lutheran churches in Alice, Freer, Mathis, Tynan, Shelby, Fayetteville, Priddy, Comanche, and Rosebud, TX. A true servant of the Lord, he was also an on-call hospital chaplain at Scott and White in Temple, TX. He maintained a license as an emergency medical technician after serving

on the volunteer ambulance service in the rural community of Industry, TX. Don had many hobbies including gardening, tree grafting, restoring antique cars, cultivating native grasses, and refurbishing pipe and reed organs. He had a lifelong love of languages. He spoke fluent Spanish, passable German, and some Greek.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Elinor Louise (Wehe) Vlasak and his sister, Joyce Margaret (Vlasak) Haase. He will be sorely missed by his survivors which include his children, Dr. Gloria Joyce Haug and husband Darrell, Dr. Mark Charles Vlasak and wife Camille, RN, Donna Louise Vlasak, RN, FNP and spouse Cynthia Hinojosa, RN, Dr. Janice Emelia Weinman Seider and husband Kevin, Dr. Marie Elaine Vlasak and husband Dr. Thang Pham, and James Louis Vlasak and wife Jodi; grandchildren, David Aaron Haug and wife Kelli, Erin Lindsey Vlasak, Lauren Michelle Haug Lys and husband Rev. Jonathan, Logan Douglas Vlasak, Connor Van Vlasak, Dr. Janelle Brooke Weinman, Joshua Lance Vlasak, Kathryn Marie Ngoc Pham, Johanna Leigh Vlasak, and Matthew Victor Ngoc Pham; greatgrandchildren, Micah Gilek Haug, Jonah Edward Lys, Jacey Alexandria Haug, and Lucas Mitchell Lys; brother, Lanny Vlasak and wife Marge; four nieces; two nephews; and numerous other family members and many friends.

Ola Mae Baker, age 92, of Kingsbury, passed away on October 12, 2023. She was born February 20th, 1931 in Seguin, Texas to Roy and Viola (Adcock) Reneau.

She married Glenn H. Baker on October 15th, 1949. The two enjoyed their early years with their 4 boys, fishing on the San Marcos River at their camp house.

Ola enjoyed cooking and made many good meals on the river and at home for her family and friends. That love for cooking continued throughout her life. She had the best recipes and everyone loved her baked goods and candy. If it didn’t turn out, she didn’t mind throwing it out the door and trying it again! She loved reading and collecting recipes, and had an enormous library of cookbooks she’d picked up on her travels as well as local churches and organizations.

She loved working in her yard. Even in her later years, she would drag the water hose around, ensuring everything was watered and healthy, and always had such beautiful flowers adorning the fences and her backyard.

She and Glenn loved traveling the States and Canada in their motorhome.

Still, Ola cooked their meals while traveling, and every meal on those wheels and at home ended with some kind of wonderful dessert!

She bowled in her younger years, never settling for mediocrity, and had many trophies and pictures for her 200+ scores.

She enjoyed visiting with her lifelong friend, Erna Bell Imhoff, and they

still visited until her death.

Her greatest enjoyment was seeing and visiting with her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were the light of her life.

Ola was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, sons, Dennis and wife Debra, Barry Baker, sister Bettie Jo Snyder, brother-in-law Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law Bill Perryman.

She is survived by their two sons, Ronnie and wife Becky Baker of Kingsbury, and Jay Baker of Georgetown; grandkids Randall and wife Tonya Baker, Ryan Baker, Jayme Baker Kane and daughter Bonnye, Mallory Baker Weitzman and daughters Haddie, Addy B and Saylor Weitzman, Cayden and wife Karlee Baker, Quinten Baker and friend Halle Scheib, Bryan Baker, Brooke, and Lauren Baker; brother, Butch Reneau and wife Susie; sister-inlaw Patricia Baker Perryman; brother-in-law Charles Snyder; along with many nieces and nephews, who she loved deeply.

New Science Research Agreement Between Rutgers and Hiroshima (New Brunswick, NJ) -- Rutgers University, RWJ Barnabas Health and Hiroshima University are forming a partnership to create better research in the health sciences. New Website Tracks Respiratory Illnesses In Dane County (Madison, WI) -- Public health managers in Madison, Wisconsin now have a single place where people can track the coronavirus, the flu, RSV, and other respiratory infections. Public Health Madison & Dane County has launched a new dashboard where people can take a look at the trends, lab test results, school absences, hospitalizations, and deaths. Public Health Supervisor Katarina Grande Says the dashboard will have information that’s not usually readily available. UofM Board Approves Agreement For Medical School Campus In St. Cloud (St. Cloud, MN) -- Plans to bring a regional medical school campus to St. Cloud are moving forward after a vote by the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. The board voted last week to approve an academic affiliation agreement between the university and CentraCare Health System.

The agreement will allow the university’s medical school to work with CentraCare on accreditation, with plans to enroll the first class of students in the fall of 2025. Officials expect to enroll two-dozen students a year at the facility.
