National honors bestowed upon Seguin’s own cancer advocate Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Seguin is home to one of the country’s top champions in its fight against cancer.

For several years, Barbara Behal has called upon Congress and state leaders to make fighting cancer a top priority. Having been appointed to the American Cancer Society’s advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network or ACS CAN, Behal has worked to petition an increase in federal funding for cancer research and has worked tirelessly to equip cancer patients and their families with the services they deserve.

Recently, that work did not go unnoticed as she was named as one of four ACT (Ambassador Constituent Team) Lead of the Year award recipients in the country.

The recognition all took place in September while Behal was attending the ACS CAN National Lobby Days in Washington, D.C. – an event that she has been attending since 2006.

Even though it has already been several weeks since receiving the national recognition, Behal says the shock is still lingering.

“I didn’t know anything about it. They read a bio and I thought man I’ve got to work harder and then when they called my name, of course, they mispronounced it but I knew it was still me because I’m used to that and I sat there.

My friends were saying Barbara, that’s you! Get up! Get up! And, so I finally got up and went on stage. I was like me? I’m getting this award? That’s only for the top people, not me. It was a shock. I was nominated by my peers and to be selected on a national level, it’s just awesome. I can’t even describe it. It’s just too much to even take in for me,” said Behal.

Behal says she is committed to her role as an ambassador and will continue the fight for as long as she can.

Guadalupe County’s Fair Queen shares excitement in earning this year’s crown

(Seguin) -- The newest members of royalty are set and ready to represent Guadalupe County. The winners of this year’s Guadalupe County Fair Queens Contest were announced Saturday night in the Seguin Coliseum.

Chosen to lead the court is this year’s 2023 Fair Queen Harlie Bode. Bode, a 15-year-old sophomore at Navarro High School, says hearing her name being called on stage was a wonderful experience.

“It was a very exciting moment. it came very fast.

I was very nervous but also very excited that I got the position that I did. It all happened very fast,” said Bode.

In fact, Bode says fair royalty runs in her blood and was thankful to have fallen in the footsteps of her mother Leah Herbold.

“My mom was the Duchess -- 1997 was the year and I’ve always gone to the fair since I was really young.

Last year, I did try out and I didn’t get the position but I was okay with it. I did try out again and I got the queen position but I was still very happy for the girls who got

it last year and I’m still happy for the girls who didn’t get it this year and I hope they can try out again. But, I did want to try out because my mom made it and it was just a very fun experience,” said Bode.

As part of earning the crown, Bode will go on to represent the county through various events, activities, and area parades. She says creating memories is what she is hoping for.

“I’m looking forward to representing Guadalupe County the best that I can, creating memories with my court and just having a very fun experience overall,” said Bode.

Serving alongside Bode in the fair court are this year’s Fair Princess Rylie Wilke of Seguin High School and Fair Duchess Kamryn Parsons, of Marion High School.

The fair queen is the daughter of Leah and Johnny Herbold and Mike Bode. This year’s Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo was held Oct. 12-15.

Vendors to Fill the Square for Pecan Fest Special by Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director

(Seguin) -- Seguin's celebration of our famous pecan is right around the corner on October 28. It is a full day of fun, nutty activities. One of the larger activities every year is the Fall Trade Days in Central Park.

There will be over 100 vendors set up in the park and surrounding streets selling all sorts of goods including plants, jewelry, clothes, art, home décor, soaps, and more.

Of course, with it being Pecan Fest, there will also be multiple vendors selling pecan related items including pecan brittle, candied pecans, pecan jams, pecan scented candles, pecan roasted coffee, freeze dried pecan ice cream, furniture and furnishings made of pecan wood, pecan earrings, pecan socks, and more.

“Every year we try to grow the number of pecan related booths, and this year we have a good amount with some new vendors,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director, “We will still accept more pecan vendors for the show, just contact the Seguin Main Street Program at (830) 401-5000 for more information.”

Other vendors at the Fall Trade Days will include Guadalupe County Master Gardeners with a very large plant sale; Greeting Tree Crafts with a wide selection of wood products including hat racks, cutting boards, and lazy Susans; Zonta Club of Seguin with nut cracker ornaments; Jamielizabeth with handmade jewelry; and Honors, continued.

“I had an aunt, my father’s side, who had breast cancer in the 1930s.

She never had reconstruction. Her chest looked like a road map. I had another aunt on my father’s side who had breast cancer in the 1960s.

They lived to be old people. So my genes are good on that side. On my mother’s side, her brother died of prostate cancer and her sister died of lung cancer and ovarian cancer and I don’t know -- a little voice came to me and said, ‘you need to get involved. You need to help people.’

And, I never realized that I would become so involved. At that time, there was just the board. The American Cancer Society, had a board here in Guadalupe County and I got on it and then in ‘99, we started planning for Relay and in 2000, we had our first Relay and I’ve been going ever since then,” said Behal.

One of the more popular booths every year at Pecan Fest is the Downtown Business Alliance's where you will be able to purchase the 2023 Sip n Stroll mug. Pecan Fest is the first time the mug will go on sale, and the artist will be in the booth to sign the mug for you.

“For one thing, you know your own body. Keep on knowing it and early detection saves lives and helps with money because you don’t spend as much money on treatments.

My sister-in-law was diagnosed in April or May of this year. She had five radiation treatments and was declared free because she caught it early. She got her mammogram. So, if you have a suspicious spot, go to the doctor. Don’t wait for it to go away or do something,” said Behal.

As part of the Lobby Days in the nation’s capital, the ACS CAN also hosts the Lights of Hope, the group’s signature fundraiser dedicated to honoring those who have been touched by cancer and remembering those who have been lost. This year marked the 13th anniversary of the event. Somewhat similar to the local Relay for Life’s luminaria event, the event not only raises money for the continued success of the group, but it serves as a reminder to Congress to do more in the fight against the

disease.

Behal says oftentimes folks are unsure where their money goes when supporting American Cancer Society fundraisers such as they did last weekend during the Guadalupe and Comal County Relay for Life event at Max Starcke Park. But for others, she says it is very clear.

“The advances that have been made in cancer are tremendous.

I have a friend who donates very heavily to the American Cancer Society and her mother, a number of years ago was diagnosed with some kind of cancer. I don’t even remember what and she researched it and she said ‘You know, there wasn’t a cure for this until four years ago.’ I said, ‘you see where your money is going?’ She goes, ‘You know, I never thought about it that way.’ So, the life you can save is yours or your loved ones,” said Behal.

Behal was honored in front of 700 other CAN volunteers who each represent their congressional districts for their respective states including Puerto Rico and Guam.

Navarro and Marion pick up key district wins on the gridiron Chris Austin

( Jarrell) -- The Navarro Panthers remain in a tie a top Distict 13-4A after blasting Jarrell on the road this past Friday, 64-14.

Kaden Guerra and Antwoin Mebane each had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Panthers.

Austin Davidson, Mason Harvey and Diego Chapa all ran for scores.

Nick Schwarzlose ran back a 98-yard fumble return for a TD on defense and he ran for a score on offense. Also on defense, Ryan Tatom and Mack Berry had interceptions and Jacob Arias scored on a 60-yard fumble return.

The Panthers moved to 2-0 in District 13-4A. Navarro will host Class 4A 5th-ranked Wimberley in a first place district showdown this Friday in Geronimo. Both teams are 2-0 in district. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Erwin-Lee Field.

(Marion) -- And Marion took down Llano at home, 28-21 to gain their first District 13-3A win.

Bulldog quarterback Bo Stahl scored on a nine-yard touchdown run with a three minutes to go in the ball game to break a 21-all tie. And Aiden Batey intercepted a pass on the next Yellowjacket

possession with less than a minute left in the game to preserve the victory for Marion.

Stahl accounted for three touchdowns on the night, throwing for one and running for two. The senior lead the Bulldogs with 152 yards on the ground while throwing 131 yards.

For the Marion defense, Jaiden Riley recovered a fumble and Chase Hallmark picked off two Llano passes.

The Bulldogs are 1-2 in district following the victory. Marion is at Ingram-Moore this Friday. Both teams are 1-2 in district, a half-game out of the fourth and final playoff spot. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.

The Reverend Don Douglas Vlasak, age 94, passed away on October 15, 2023.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Marcus Bigott officiating.

A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Moulton City Cemetery in Moulton, Texas. For those who desire the services can be live-streamed at www.YouTube.com/@ emanuelslutheranseguin.

Don was born on February 22, 1929, to James and Libbie (Svoboda) Vlasak in San Antonio, TX. As the Great Depression started, his family moved several times and ended up in Corpus Christi, TX. An avid student of science, young Don eventually came to know the Lord. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Clarence Bohls. At Texas Lutheran College, he met his beloved wife, Elinor Wehe. They were married at Grace Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX in 1954 just as he started his 4th year at Wartburg Theological Seminary.

He was ordained at his home church, First Lutheran in Corpus Christi, TX on June 19, 1955, and soon after accepted his first pastoral call to La Iglesia Luterana El Cristo Rey in Alice, TX. Through the years he, with immeasurable support from his wife, served Lutheran churches in Alice, Freer, Mathis, Tynan, Shelby, Fayetteville, Priddy, Comanche, and Rosebud, TX. A true servant of the Lord, he was also an on-call hospital chaplain at Scott and White in Temple, TX.

He maintained a license as an emergency medical technician after serving on the volunteer ambulance service in the rural community of Industry, TX. Don had many hobbies including gardening, tree grafting, restoring antique cars, cultivating native grasses, and refurbishing pipe and reed organs. He had a lifelong love of languages. He spoke fluent Spanish, passable German, and some Greek.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Elinor Louise (Wehe) Vlasak and his sister, Joyce Margaret (Vlasak) Haase. He will be sorely missed by his survivors which include his children, Dr. Gloria Joyce Haug and husband Darrell, Dr. Mark Charles Vlasak and wife Camille, RN, Donna Louise Vlasak, RN, FNP and spouse Cynthia Hinojosa, RN, Dr. Janice Emelia Weinman Seider and husband Kevin, Dr. Marie Elaine Vlasak and husband Dr. Thang Pham, and James Louis Vlasak and wife Jodi; grandchildren, David Aaron Haug and wife Kelli, Erin Lindsey Vlasak, Lauren Michelle Haug Lys and husband Rev. Jonathan, Logan Douglas Vlasak, Connor Van Vlasak, Janelle Brooke Weinman, Joshua Lance Vlasak, Kathryn Marie Ngoc Pham, Johanna Leigh Vlasak, and Matthew Victor Ngoc Pham; great-grandchildren, Micah Gilek Haug, Jonah Edward Lys, Jacey Alexandria Haug, and Lucas Mitchell Lys; brother, Lanny Vlasak and wife Marge; four nieces; two nephews; and numerous other family members and many friends.

Laretta Joy Schulze, age 59, of San Marcos, Texas passed away on October 9, 2023. She was born on August 27, 1964, to Irene G. (Braune) and Larry August Schulze.

Joy was preceded in death by her grandparents, William and Margaret Braune, and August and Lois Schulze.

She is survived by her mother, Irene G. (Braune) Bierstedt and (George); father, Larry A. Schulze and (Dorothy); sisters, Larene Simmons (Garry), and Laura Ramirez (Troy); nieces, Jennifer Southworth ( Josh), Avery Davis, Jeana Esparza (Efren), Chelsy Thornton (Casey), Hanna Simmons; nephews, Joel Ramirez (Kirsten Young), and Alex Simmons (Sarah); 4 great nieces; 3 great nephews; aunts, uncles, cousins, and other loving family members and friends.

Ola Mae Baker, age 92, of Kingsbury, passed away on October 12, 2023. She was born February 20th, 1931 in Seguin, Texas to Roy and Viola (Adcock) Reneau.

She married Glenn H. Baker on October 15th, 1949. The two enjoyed their early years with their 4 boys, fishing on the San Marcos River at their camp house.

Ola enjoyed cooking and made many good meals on the river and at home for her family and friends. That love for cooking continued throughout her life. She had the best recipes and everyone loved her baked goods and candy. If it didn’t turn out, she didn’t mind throwing it out the door and trying it again! She loved reading and collecting recipes, and had an enormous library of cookbooks she’d picked up on her travels as well as local churches and organizations.

She loved working in her yard. Even in her later years, she would drag the water hose around, ensuring everything was watered and healthy, and always had such beautiful flowers adorning the fences and her backyard.

She and Glenn loved traveling the States and Canada in their motorhome.

Still, Ola cooked their meals while traveling, and every meal on those wheels and at home ended with some kind of wonderful dessert!

She bowled in her younger years, never settling for mediocrity, and had many trophies and pictures for her 200+ scores.

She enjoyed visiting with her lifelong friend, Erna Bell Imhoff, and they

still visited until her death.

Her greatest enjoyment was seeing and visiting with her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were the light of her life.

Ola was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, sons, Dennis and wife Debra, Barry Baker, sister Bettie Jo Snyder, brother-in-law Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law Bill Perryman.

She is survived by their two sons, Ronnie and wife Becky Baker of Kingsbury, and Jay Baker of Georgetown; grandkids Randall and wife Tonya Baker, Ryan Baker, Jayme Baker Kane and daughter Bonnye, Mallory Baker Weitzman and daughters Haddie, Addy B and Saylor Weitzman, Cayden and wife Karlee Baker, Quinten Baker and friend Halle Scheib, Bryan Baker, Brooke, and Lauren Baker; brother, Butch Reneau and wife Susie; sister-inlaw Patricia Baker Perryman; brother-in-law Charles Snyder; along with many nieces and nephews, who she loved deeply.

Kaiser Permanente, Union Workers Reach Tentative Deal (Oakland, CA) -- Kaiser Permanente and its union workers have agreed on a tentative deal after the largest health care strike in American history.

Last week’s strike lasted only three days, but the unions were threatening an eight day strike that would have taken place next month if a deal wasn’t reached by Halloween. Details of the agreement are not currently known, but workers had been asking for better pay and improved staffing levels at Kaiser facilities and hospitals. Rank and file union members will get to vote on the tentative new deal and could still vote “no” to initiate another strike.

NYS Makes Progress To Fulfill Mental Health Plan (New York, NY) -- New York State is making progress to fulfill Governor Hochul’s one-billion dollar mental health support plan. The governor says 99 inpatient psychiatric beds have opened at hospitals throughout the state, and another 51 are set to open by the end of the year. Hundreds of psychiatric beds were lost so hospitals could fill them with COVID patients, but the state started issuing fines to speed up the restoration process.

Since 2022, state funded teams have helped nearly 200 people secure permanent housing, many of whom were living with mental illness.

Mary Lou Retton’s “DWTS” Partner Updates On Her Health (Los Angeles, CA) -- Retired Olympian Mary Lou Retton is “fighting” in her battle with pneumonia. That’s according to her “Dancing With The Stars” partner. Sasha Farber told Entertainment Tonight he’s been talking to Retton sending her videos of herself dancing and telling her “You’ve got this.”

He said while she’s struggling in the ICU, he’s confident she will win this battle because she’s strong” and is a fighter. Retton’s daughter McKenna Kelly posted on Instagram earlier this week asking for prayers and donations for her mother’s medical bills.

Maine Residents Reminded About Dangers Posed By Browntail Moths (Augusta, ME) -- The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is reminding residents about the health threat that’s posed by browntail moths. The insects have toxic hairs that can be stirred up during activities including sweeping, raking and mowing the lawn. If inhaled, those hairs could cause breathing and other respiratory issues and also trigger a rash that may last for weeks. It’s recommended that people only work outdoors on damp days and cover their face if they’re in an area infested with the moths..
