Seguin ISD Board of Trustees begin process of filling board VACANCY Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The process of filling the vacancy left behind by District 3 Trustee Cinde Thomas Jimenez on the Seguin ISD School Board begins this week.

Trustees are slated to meet behind closed doors to begin interviewing the three candidates who have submitted their application for appointment to the position.

The three candidates include Grace Mueller, Cheryl Schmidt, and Lizeth Hernandez.

District officials say ideally, the new District 3 trustee will be appointed at the Tuesday, Oct. 24 regular school board meeting.

Once approved, the appointee will serve the remainder of ThomasJimenez’s term, which expires November 2024. Thomas-Jimenez resigned her post due to moving out of state.

The special meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Seguin ISD Central Office.

(Seguin) – Although the gates of the 140th Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo have officially closed, the bragging rights earned at this year’s fair parade have only begun. The top winners in this year’s parade have been announced. The parade was held Friday morning in downtown Seguin.

Winning this year’s grand prize trophy for Best Overall Entry was The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Seguin Matador Theatre group, which featured its upcoming Sponge Bob Musical also earned top honors by walking away with this year’s Grand Prize.

Other winners include Guadalupe County Jeepers, Best Individual or Club; Thomas Jefferson Lasso, Most Patriotic; Guadalupe County Fair Queen, Festival Float, Best Festival Float; Texas Farm Bureau, Best Commercial Float; the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Ambassador Committee; Best Out of Town Float; Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office SWAT vehicle; Best Heavy Equipment; The Country Church Buckaroos, Best Animal entry and Lifegate Christian School; Best Local Entry.

Over 50 plus entries participated in this year’s parade. The parade is an annual tradition of the county fair. This year’s fair was held Oct. 12-15.

Matadors keep pace in District 12-5A playoff race with win over Hays Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- In a game that had a playoff atmosphere, the Seguin Matadors won a crucial District 12-5A match-up with the Hays Hawks on Friday night at Matador Stadium, 42-24.

The win keeps Seguin within one game of first place Smithson Valley at 3-1 and moved the Mats into a tie for second place in the district. The Wagner Thunderbirds and Boerne-Champion Chargers are also 3-1. The Hawks dropped to 1-3 in district play.

Seguin got on the scoreboard first against the Hawks, by taking the opening kickoff and driving 75 yards down the field in less than two minutes. A long run by running back John Jackson got the Mats down to the Hays one-yard line and Devin Hall would cap the drive by scoring from the one to make the score, 7-0.

Seguin would recover a Hays fumble on their first drive and take the ball and score again. This time, quarterback Corey Dailey connected with receiver Nik Henry on a 42-yard scoring strike to put the Matadors ahead, 14-0.

The Hawks would kick a field goal early in the second quarter to close to 14-3, but then Seguin would score on their third consecutive possession to start the game when Dailey found a streaking Holt Haas down the left sideline for a 23-yard TD pass to put the Mats up, 21-3.

Hays would score on a 35-yard Hail Mary into the end-zone on the final play of the half to pull within 21-10 as the teams headed into the locker room. The Mats had over 200 yards of offense in the first half including over 120 on the ground from Jackson.

The Seguin defense would stop the Hawks on their first series to start the second half and the offense would respond when Dailey found Henry on a 50-yard score as the junior wide-out took a short pass and sprinted to the end-zone to give the Mats a 28-10 lead. The teams would trade touchdowns the rest of the way with Seguin getting touchdown rushes from Jackson and Hall to complete their scoring on the night.

Corey Dailey was 13-17 on the night for 183 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Henry finished the night with four catches for 108 yards. Jackson tallied 197 yards on the ground on 16 carries to give him 1398 yards on the season through seven games.

In other district games Friday, Smithson Valley stayed unbeaten in district by blasting San Antonio MacArthur, 62-0. New Braunfels Canyon shut out Lehman, 47-0. And Wagner handed Boerne-Champion their first loss of the season, beating the Chargers, 34-21 The Matadors will play at Canyon next Friday. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. and we’ll have the game for you on KWED.

Laretta Joy Schulze, age 59, of San Marcos, Texas passed away on October 9, 2023. She was born on August 27, 1964, to Irene G. (Braune) and Larry August Schulze.

Joy was preceded in death by her grandparents, William and Margaret Braune, and August and Lois Schulze.

She is survived by her mother, Irene G. (Braune) Bierstedt and (George); father, Larry A. Schulze and (Dorothy); sisters, Larene Simmons (Garry), and Laura Ramirez (Troy); nieces, Jennifer Southworth ( Josh), Avery Davis, Jeana Esparza (Efren), Chelsy Thornton (Casey), Hanna Simmons; nephews, Joel Ramirez (Kirsten Young), and Alex Simmons (Sarah); 4 great nieces; 3 great nephews; aunts, uncles, cousins, and other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at Frieden’s Church. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Pastors Dave and Sonja Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Lone Oak Cemetery.

Ola Mae Baker, age 92, of Kingsbury, passed away on October 12, 2023. She was born February 20th, 1931 in Seguin, Texas to Roy and Viola (Adcock) Reneau.

She married Glenn H. Baker on October 15th, 1949. The two enjoyed their early years with their 4 boys, fishing on the San Marcos River at their camp house.

Ola enjoyed cooking and made many good meals on the river and at home for her family and friends. That love for cooking continued throughout her life. She had the best recipes and everyone loved her baked goods and candy. If it didn’t turn out, she didn’t mind throwing it out the door and trying it again! She loved reading and collecting recipes, and had an enormous library of cookbooks she’d picked up on her travels as well as local churches and organizations.

She loved working in her yard. Even in her later years, she would drag the water hose around, ensuring everything was watered and healthy, and always had such beautiful flowers adorning the fences and her backyard.

She and Glenn loved traveling the States and Canada in their motorhome.

Still, Ola cooked their meals while traveling, and every meal on those wheels and at home ended with some kind of wonderful dessert!

She bowled in her younger years, never settling for mediocrity, and had many trophies and pictures for her 200+ scores.

She enjoyed visiting with her lifelong friend, Erna Bell Imhoff, and they

still visited until her death.

Her greatest enjoyment was seeing and visiting with her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were the light of her life.

Ola was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, sons, Dennis and wife Debra, Barry Baker, sister Bettie Jo Snyder, brother-in-law Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law Bill Perryman.

She is survived by their two sons, Ronnie and wife Becky Baker of Kingsbury, and Jay Baker of Georgetown; grandkids Randall and wife Tonya Baker, Ryan Baker, Jayme Baker Kane and daughter Bonnye, Mallory Baker Weitzman and daughters Haddie, Addy B and Saylor Weitzman, Cayden and wife Karlee Baker, Quinten Baker and friend Halle Scheib, Bryan Baker, Brooke, and Lauren Baker; brother, Butch Reneau and wife Susie; sister-inlaw Patricia Baker Perryman; brother-in-law Charles Snyder; along with many nieces and nephews, who she loved deeply.

The family would like to thank Brookdale North Assisted Living staff and GVNC Seguin for the kind care they showed our mother.

Monitor Children’s Social Media Use During War (Undated) -- Some schools are telling parents to monitor their children’s social media use while the war in Israel rages on. Counselors are concerned over the possibility of graphic images of hostages held by the Palestinian militant group Hamas circulating. They warn that the images could cause trauma. The National Association of School Psychologists recommends that parents appear calm when talking to kids about terrorism, but to also tell the truth.

FDA: Ketamine Use For Psychiatric Disorders Could Be Dangerous (Washington, DC) -- The FDA is warning consumers about the dangers of using ketamine for psychiatric disorders. The administration said on its website that “ketamine is not FDA approved for the treatment of any psychiatric disorder.” The agency said using the drug could put patients at risk for misuse and abuse or “serious adverse events.” Ketamine has been marketed for use toward various psychiatric disorders.

Bird Flu Outbreak Detected In Utah, South Dakota Flocks (Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has identified two large commercial poultry flocks showing presence of the bird flu pathogen. Testing from last Friday showed a flock of over 47-thousand birds in South Dakota had traces of the virus. Two days later, a flock three times the size in Utah was infected. Both flocks will have to be killed to prevent further spread. Fortunately, human cases are rare, and the virus won’t survive if the poultry you eat is properly cooked. An outbreak in February cost the federal government upwards of 660-million dollars with shoppers seeing poultry prices spike after farmers were forced to cull over 58-million birds earlier this year.

Appetite Altering Drugs Are Changing Consumer Spending Habits (New York, NY) -- The popularity of weight-management drugs like Ozempic and WeGovy are hurting growth forecasts for the packaged-food industry, and less obvious sectors as well. The drugs mimic a hormone that signals to the brain that you’re full, making users of the diabetes medications eat less and eat healthier. That’s bad news for junk food brands. Barclays Bank warned that the popularity of these drugs could dampen demand for companies like PepsiCo, Mondelez, and the fast-food sector.
