What to know about this weekend’s annular eclipse Lizz Daniels

(Seguin) -- One of nature’s most aweinspiring displays is set to cross over Central Texas this weekend, and all of Guadalupe County is going to have a great view. The annular solar eclipse will take place this Saturday, peaking just before noon.

But before you head out to stare into the sky, here are some important tips to protect your eyes and cameras while experiencing this rare event.

Guadalupe County Fair, PRCA Rodeo continues into the weekend Fair Parade set for Friday morning Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) — Family fun continues these next three days during the annual Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. The fair runs through Sunday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Friday’s schedule kicks off with the annual fair parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel south on Austin Street.

“At 10 o’clock in the morning, we will start on College Street and run our way down Austin Street to Nelda Street and the marching units will end at Nelda Street. The rest of our units will go on down to the Wave Pool parking lot for disbanding. So, you can sit anywhere from Austin and College to our Guadalupe and Nelda Street area and watch the parade at 10 a.m. and we are looking at about a good 50 plus entries. We are excited to have some of the groups back out from San Antonio to join us. They will even be over at the grounds later after the parade and be around over there to visit with our spectators for the fair and we invite everybody to come over to the grounds after the parade is over and join us for our140th Guadalupe County Fair,” said Damerau.

Fair gates open at 11 a.m. Friday. Events include Fair Market Days; the Pet Show at noon; the Kid’s Corral from to 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.; a wine garden from 4 to 11 p.m. and the presentation of Miss Rodeo Guadalupe County Teen and Princess at 7:30 p.m. Today’s dance features music by La Musica Live Variety Band from 6 to 9 p.m. followed

by Fast Moving Train from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. The dance is free and will be held in the Dance Pavilion.

On Saturday, gates to the fairgrounds open at 9 a.m.

Events throughout the day include a trade fair and expo from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the Best Western Wear Roundup at 9 a.m.; youth activities from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; awards for pumpkin decorating contest at 12:30 p.m.; a fiddler’s contest at 12:30 p.m. followed by the Fair Queen’s contest at 5:30 p.m.; the presentation of Miss Rodeo Guadalupe County Teen & Princess at 7:30 p.m. and the Mutton Bustin’ Contest at 7:45 p.m.

Saturday night is also “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” in which the fair association will again honor breast cancer survivors during the opening ceremonies. Those who wish to be recognized are asked to call 830-379-6477. Each survivor will receive a ticket to the rodeo Saturday night.

Plus, the fair association will make a donation for each person who enters the rodeo arena wearing pink.

Saturday’s dance will feature music by Paul Sanchez & Wrangler Country from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. followed by headliner Clay Hollis from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The dance will be held in the Fairgrounds Dance Pavilion.

On Sunday, gates open at 10 a.m. Sunday will be the final day for the county fair. The schedule includes Fair

Market Days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; youth activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.in the Coliseum; the Food Challenge contest at 12:30 p.m. and the release of home arts and pumpkin decorating entries from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Gates officially close at 6 p.m.

Each day of the fair includes a large carnival and various food booths. The PRCA Rodeo also continues today and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 pre-sale and available at gcfair.org. Rodeo tickets at the grounds will be $30. Children 10 and under are free.

Gate admission into the fairgrounds also varies each day. Friday is Student and Military Day. Students with an ID or those with a military ID get in free until 7 p.m.

Otherwise, cost is $10. There is no cost for kids 10 and under.

The cost to enter the grounds is $10 a person. Kids 10 and under are free.

Damerau says proceeds from parking will again go to support a local non-profit. She says a free shuttle service at the Seguin Wave Pool will also be offered this Saturday only.

“So, our parking this year is being manned by Seguin FFA. So, parking on the grounds is $5 so be sure and come over and come into the parking area and our Seguin FFA is doing that as their fundraiser this year. So, parking on the grounds will be $5 and we will be running a Wave Pool park and ride if you want to park at the Wave Pool on Saturday. There will be a shuttle running on Saturday for that,” said Damerau.

The shuttle on Saturday will operate from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and will run every 15 minutes.

Guadalupe County looks to crown its newest member of royalty during the annual fair queen’s contest. The contest gets underway at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Seguin Coliseum.

PROTECT YOUR EYES At no point during the eclipse should you view the event without eye protection. Unlike a total solar eclipse, you will not be able to remove your glasses during totality. Instead, the sun will appear as a ring of fire around the moon as it reaches annularity.

Exposure to the sun without proper protection can cause “eclipse blindness” or burns on your retinas, causing long-term visual damage.

NASA recommends glasses with ISO 12312-2 stamped on them, so whether you buy online or locally, make sure you’ve got the right lenses.

It’s also important to remember to put your glasses on before you look at the eclipse and then look away before taking them off.

PROTECT YOUR CAMERA Knowing the sun can damage your eyes, it may come as no surprise that it can also damage your phone’s camera

(or any camera). According to NASA, viewing the eclipse through your camera lens, telescope, or other device with or without wearing eclipse glasses or a solar viewer is also not advised, as the rays may burn through the filter.

To protect your phone or other camera, you’ll need a lens filter with the same level of protection as your solar glasses.

ENJOY THE EVENT While solar eclipses occur somewhere on the planet around every 18 months, some sources estimate that they only happen once every 300-400 years in a given location. That would typically make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Luckily for Texans, though, a total solar eclipse will be headed this way in April of next year. During that one, the moon will completely block out the sun.

The Seguin community has many local eclipse parties to choose from this weekend, with the Seguin Public Library and others hosting events. The

city of Seguin falls on the grazing zone of the eclipse, meaning you’ll be able to see it, but the effect won’t quite be full-blown. If you’re looking for a better view, consider heading west to reach the full eclipse zone, where the annularity duration will be longer.

The annular solar eclipse begins on the West coast in Oregon around 9:13 a.m. PT and will peak over Guadalupe County at around 11:53 a.m.

With this once-in-a-lifetime event happening on a Saturday, families are encouraged to prepare by having those glasses handy. Folks will not want to be caught without them outside as they enjoy those sporting events, pumpkin patch outings, or that long list of events at the Guadalupe County Fair.

Locations hosting free eclipse viewing parties for the entire community include the Seguin Public Library, A.J. Briesemeister Middle School; Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, BS Brewing, Morning Buzz Coffee Company in McQueeney, and the Guadalupe Valley Habitat Restore.

Star players get recognized for Navarro and Marion ahead of this week’s district games Chris Austin

( Jarrell) -- The Navarro Panthers will look to go to 2-0 in District 13-4A when they visit Jarrell on Friday night.

The Cougars are 0-1 in district after falling to the Class 4A 5th-ranked Wimberley Texans last week. The Panthers took down Lago Vista in Geronimo last Friday.

Last month, Navarro offensive and defensive lineman Houston Berry was extended a pair of college football offers from Mary Hardin-Baylor and McMurry University. And this week, Panther defensive lineman Landun Taylor was invited to play in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game.

Panther head coach Rod Blount says he happy to see both players get rewarded for work they’ve put in at Navarro.

“Houston is a guy who is just coming into his own. He had a tough injury at the end of his sophomore year that kind of slowed him down as a junior,” Blount said. “He’s worked extremely hard to get back in it and he’s doing a great job for us this year. It’s starting to pay off (with) schools looking at him.

I think a lot more will be coming.

“Landun has been great for us for a while. He was all-state in football and baseball last year and he’s picking up where he left off and doing a great job.

It’s a big honor. It’s a big all-star game. It’s tough to get in, we put up kids every single year and sometimes we get one or two and sometimes we don’t get any.”

The San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game will be played on January 6th at the Alamodome. The Panthers and Cougars will kick off Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Jarrell.

(Marion) -- The Marion Bulldogs return home on Friday still looking for their first District 13-3A win when they host the Llano Yellowjackets.

Marion is 0-2 in the district with losses coming to two of the district’s top teams in Randolph and Blanco. Llano is 2-1 with wins over Cole and Luling and a loss to Randolph.

Bulldog senior Justin DeHoyos was among the 116 student-athletes selected to compete in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game.

Marion head coach Ryne Miller is excited for the honor DeHoyos received this week.

“We can’t ask for a better kid to represent us. Justin does everything right. He’s a hard worker. He’s one of our team captains,” Miller said.

“He’s just physical. He’s one of our stronger guys in the weight room.

He doesn’t miss a workout. He doesn’t miss a day of school. He makes great grades. He donates his time to community service. This is very well deserved for Justin.”

Friday’s night’s game between Marion and Llano kicks off at 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in Marion.

(Seguin) -- And the Seguin Matadors are coming off their first District 12-5A loss last week at Boerne-Champion. The Mats will try to get back in the win column when they host the Hays Hawks Friday night at Matador Stadium.

The Matadors are 2-1 in district, tied for third place with Wagner and a game back of 3-0 Champion and Smithson Valley. The Hawks are 1-2 and tied with Canyon for fifth place in the district. The Cougars beat Hays last week.

Friday’s game between the Matadors and Hawks gets underway at 7:30 p.m in Seguin.

Frank Torres III, known fondly as “Champ”, passed away on October 7, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and artistic brilliance. Born on August 31, 1988, in Seguin, Texas, Champ brought joy and happiness to everyone he encountered throughout his life.

Champ will always be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family.

He cherished every moment spent with his family and his love for them knew no bounds. The memories they shared together will forever be treasured and held close to their hearts.

A kind and welcoming soul, Champ was known for his random acts of kindness that touched the lives of many. His selflessness knew no bounds as he consistently went out of his way to brighten someone’s day.

He had a heart full of love that overflowed onto others.

In addition to his kind nature, he was an exceptionally hard worker and possessed immense artistic talent. His passion for engraving left an indelible mark on the world around him. His love and passion for welding was shown in all of the work he put into welding. He was a selftaught welder and would often refer to himself as the “One Eyed Welder”.

Beyond these artistic pursuits, he had a passion for boxing and working

out and indulging in the simple pleasures of watching movies at home with his loved ones. Sports played a significant role in Champ’s life as well. He was an avid fan of both the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Antonio Spurs.

Champ was a cherished member of his family who adored him deeply.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Guadalupe and Maria Luna; uncles Guadalupe Luna Jr., Enrique Luna, and Robert Gallegos; aunt Lucy Gallegos. Left behind to honor his memory is his wife of 14 years, Alyssa Torres; children Javen Rivera, Xaver Gomez (Angela Garcia), Jayla Gomez, and Garrett Anthony Torres; his beloved pet, Bellie; parents, Frank Torres Jr. and Angelita Luna Torres; siblings, Toni Torres and Jesse Torres (Chelsie); nephew Aiden Torres, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and countless friends.

Laretta Joy Schulze, age 59, of San Marcos, Texas passed away on October 9, 2023. She was born on August 27, 1964, to Irene G. (Braune) and Larry August Schulze.

Evelyn grew up on the family farm in Marion, Texas. She was a hard worker on the farm and later at a wool mill, sewing factory and Seguin ISD cafeteria.

Jesus “Jesse” G. Leal, age 91 of Seguin, has peacefully passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Jesse was born on April 5, 1932 in Guadalupe County to Jose and Maria (Garza) Leal.

Jesse served on the Seguin City Council for ten years, from May 1960 April 1970. He also served as Mayor Pro Tem. He also served on the City Council Board during the approval of Guadalupe Valley Hospital, Seguin High Rise, and The Seguin Fire Department on Vaughn Street just to name a few of Jesse’s many accomplishments during his years on the City Council Board. He was a man of his Faith, his Country, his community, and his family. He helped break ground at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church as well as serving in many areas of the church. He was a proud military veteran serving in the Korean War. Although Jesse had an illustrious career in the community. Above all those things Jesse loved and devoted his life to his family. He loved going to dances and dancing with his beloved wife. Jesse loved spending time with his family going to the river on weekends, and picnicking with his children, in Galveston, as well as Corpus Christi. He also enjoyed deer hunting, fishing with his sons and son-in-laws, and golfing with his brothers. Jesse was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed taking his family to games at the Astro Dome and Astro World. He enjoyed spending time at the flea market after retirement.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Criselda “Cris” (Serna) Leal, his son, Jaime S. Leal, his granddaughter, Chris Marie Alvarado, and his parents.

Survivors include his children, Hector S. Leal, Nora Alvarado (Johnny), Regina Leal-Vandervort, Melissa Leal Tey (Carlos) and Denise Leal Rangel (Benjamin); daughter-in-law, Rosemary Leal; sisters, Herlinda Sotelo and Esther Toscano; grandchildren, Isaac Leal (Melanie), Melinda Ortiz, Hector Leal, Jr. (Esperanza), Jaime Leal, Dana Margio (Paolo), Carolyn Rodriguez (Joe), Marisela Elizondo (Adrian), Sirena Lopez (Rafael), Amber Mendez (Carlos), Makayla Tey, Nicholas Tey, Ryan Rangel, and Rayn Rangel; greatgrandchildren, Alexander, Elizabeth, Isaac, Jr., Jesse, Jaime, Christopher, Joseph, Jocelyn, Jayden, Stephanie, Trey, Alicia and Victoria; great great grandchildren, Kastiel, Jon-David, Erza, Xavier and Mason and as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

North Carolina Abortions Drop 31% In July After Ban Took Effect (Raleigh, NC) -- Abortions in North Carolina fell by more than 30-percent in one month after the state’s 12-week abortion ban went into effect. An analysis by abortion-rights group the Guttmacher [[ goot-mah-ker ]] Institute showed there were over 13-hundred fewer abortions in July, compared to June. A lead author of the report said the decline probably reflects fewer people traveling to North Carolina from out of state for abortions because of added restrictions along with the 12-week limit.

Seven More Patients Sue Yale Over Fertility Clinic Thefts (New Haven, CT) -- Seven more patients are suing a Yale fertility clinic because of the theft of fentanyl that led to their operations without any painkillers. The seven patients are joining nearly 70 others who previously sued the Yale Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Clinic. The suit claims the clinic failed to inform the patients that a former nurse had been stealing fentanyl from the facility and replacing it with saline. All of the patients say they experienced extreme pain during their surgical procedures.

Arkansas Jail Settles Lawsuit Over COVID Inmates Treatment (Fayetteville, AR) -- An Arkansas county has settled a lawsuit by inmates who said the jail knowingly prescribed ivermectin to treat them for COVID without their consent. The four men said they were given the drug as a form of what their suit called medical experimentation. They said the doctor at the Washington County Jail in Fayetteville told them they received vitamins, antibiotics, and/or steroids. Health officials had warned that ivermectin, which is used to treat animals with parasites, should not be used to treat COVID but the jail used it anyway. Each of the men, who suffered side effects from the drug, received two-thousand dollars to settle the suit.

California Bans Red Dye No. 3 (Sacramento, CA) -- California is banning red dye number three and other possibly harmful food additives. The state is now the first to ban the use of ingredients found in many popular candies and drinks. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the landmark bill into law. Known as the California Food Safety Act, the new law forbids the manufacture and sale of any food products in the state that include the dye.

Guadalupe County Fair Seeking Volunteers The Guadalupe County Fair is seeking more volunteer members. Also seeking to partner with businesses or organizations for volunteers during the Fair. Needed areas include the rodeo ticket admissions and food and beverage ticket sales. Ask the Master

GARDENERS Q:

I live in Seguin where there are some empty raised planter beds on several street corners.

What kind of small tree could be planted there?

A:I like the small variety of Crape myrtle that is planted on the

west corner of Donegan and S. Austin; however, Crape myrtle is not native. Wildflower.org, as well as a CPS Energy site for San Antonio trees, suggests small native trees such as cherry laurel, Mexican plum, and Texas redbud.

Mexican plum (Prunus Mexicana) and Texas redbud (Cercis Canadensis var. texensis) are both lovely trees and both have blooms. Mexican plum grows to 25 feet with a 25 foot spread, while Texas redbud grows to 10-20 feet with a 12-20 foot spread. I have one of each. However, both are deciduous which would leave a bare trunk in the winter.

Cherry laurel (Prunus caroliniana) is an evergreen which can grow to 40 feet with a 35 foot spread which sounds a little large. However, if you go to our library parking lot, you will note a border of small shrubs. These are cherry laurels which have been there several years and are still small. They also bloom and would probably do quite well although would have to be trimmed as a tree instead of a shrub.

The only problem I can see is whether or not they would block the line of sight of a driver turning the corner although that is a problem no matter what you plant.

Q:

Are there shrubs available with berries that are suitable for our Texas landscapes?

A:

We have many shrubs that will do well here. One of my favorites is the American beautyberry. Of course the berries don’t stay on long because they are also favorites of birds, butterflies and deer. American holly and Nellie R. Stevens holly both have red fruit (and are usually my table decorations at Christmas).

Possumhaw holly is a small tree with red berries in the winter. It is very decorative when the leaves fall off, leaving the berries behind.

Q:

We’ve had such a dry year. Will we have any native fall bloomers?

A: As I look out my back door, I see buds atop my goldenrod

(Solidago altissima). They have a yellow tint and will be opening soon. Many people don’t care for goldenrod, but I love it. This perennial is a favorite nectar source of bees and butterflies, and can be used as a dye plant. Wildflower.org says the height of the plant is determined by the fertility and moisture content of the soil. My patch of goldenrod managed to stay alive all summer in spite of the fact that I don’t water the back half of my lawn.

Another fall bloomer is frostweed (Verbesina virginica). As I write this, some of my frostweed is starting to set buds in spite of the lack of rain.
