(Seguin) -- Fair gates officially open today for the 140th Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. Today also marks KWED Listener Appreciation Night at the rodeo.

KWED along with a number of partnering businesses are making sure that everyone gets to enjoy tonight’s rodeo for free.

A limited number of free tickets are still available for pickup. Tickets are available at KWED, Gunn Chrysler Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Guadalupe Printing Solutions, Texas Built Mobile Homes, or at D&D Texas Outfitters.

While the rodeo is free, families will still have to pay the $10 gate fee if they arrive

Former City Councilman dies Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A former Seguin City Councilman who served the city for a full decade is being remembered. Jesus "Jesse" Leal, who served on the city council between May 1960 and April 1970, died Monday. During his time on the council, Leal also served as Mayor Pro Tem. That decade of service to the city included his role in the approval of Guadalupe Valley Hospital, the

Seguin High Rise, as well as the Seguin Fire Department on Vaughn Street.

In addition to serving his country in the Korean War, Leal was also of service to his community having been instrumental in the groundbreaking of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

The funeral for Leal will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church. Leal was 91.

Seguin ISD Interim superintendent to host VIRTUAL town hall meeting

Dr. Vijil to formally address local families, community Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Now that she’s had a couple of weeks of steering the ship in the Seguin ISD, interim Superintendent Veronica Vijil is sharing more on her role going forward.

After having just been hired in the summer as the deputy superintendent, Dr. Vijil in late September assumed the temporary role left behind by former Superintendent Matthew Guiterrez.

On Sept. 30, Dr. Gutierrez left to accept a new role with the Leander ISD. Luckily for her and the Seguin ISD family, Dr. Vijil says the district has operated under top notch leadership.

She says her job now is to just continue that momentum.

"I think one of the things that I want them to know is that when I arrived in the Seguin ISD, I quickly accessed the landscape

of the programs and the tools and the training and everything that we were working on, and I want the community to know that we are still invested in things that have already begun. For example, the strategic plan. I know that it was an important part of community feedback, staff feedback, student feedback to create this strategic plan and so a transition doesn't mean that you throw out everything that exists. You work with the things that are already strong and embedded into the work that we are doing. So, looking over the strategic

plan, we have some goals that we are trying to reach, and we set annual goals to make sure that we are making progress," said Dr. Vijil.

Although she's relatively new to the Seguin ISD, Dr. Vijil’s experience in education is extensive -- making her the ideal candidate for the interim position.

"I've had central office positions that have really provided a lot of experience. For example, as the executive director of data management and compliance in Spring ISD, I really got to know the PEIMS (standards) system - the reporting and the necessary data that we send to the state, and we receive from the state. Then, as the associate superintendent in Canutillo, one of my responsibilities was to oversee and evaluate principals in the district as well as the directors.

Canutillo has about 6,500 students so fairly close to Seguin ISD's student population also and then of course, I've had the experience of being superintendent for four years. I came from Fabens ISD. I have to say there was a lot of work that took place in Fabens and much like Seguin, a community who is invested in the education system," said Dr. Vijil.

In a message to the community, Dr. Vijil reaffirms her commitment to the families of the Seguin ISD. "That I am one of them. That I live in the Seguin community, and they are going to see me at the grocery store and at my church on Sundays. People have already said, oh, we saw you at church or I saw you at the grocery store because my husband and I made that commitment Vijil, pg. 3

(Seguin) -- If there is one thing that won’t be lacking at this year’s Guadalupe County Fair, it’s the music.

This year’s fair schedule includes four days of live music concerts along with a daily batch of Oktoberfest entertainment in the Seguin Coliseum Gazebo.

Kicking things off tonight will be Gordon Rockett & The Cavaliers from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. followed by La Musica Live Variety Band from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Fast Moving Train from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Saturday’s line-up in the dance pavilion will continue with Paul Sanchez & Wrangler Country from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. followed by Clay Hollis Fair, continued.

Today’s schedule includes the opening of gates at 5 p.m.

Again, there will be free grounds admission until 6 p.m.

Events include the annual Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce’s mixer from 5 to 7 p.m. in the dance pavilion.

Youth activities will also be held from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Seguin Coliseum followed

by Oktoberfest music in the gazebo from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

The start of the PRCA rodeo gets underway at

7:30 p.m. Wrapping up events will be tonight’s free dance featuring music by Gordon Rockett & The Cavaliers.

Fair gates will re-open on Friday at 11 a.m. following this year’s Guadalupe County Fair Parade.

The parade gets underway at 10 a.m.

Friday in downtown Seguin. Parking each day is $5 a vehicle.

Proceeds from parking will go to the Seguin FFA. A free shuttle to the fairgrounds from the Seguin Wave Pool will only be offered Saturday night. The cost to enter the fair Friday

from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Wrapping up things on Sunday will be Gacho Sol from 2 to 5 p.m.

Folks this year will also get a heavy dose of live German music. Each day of the fair at the Gazebo, folks will be treated to the live sounds. They include Kenneth Kristvnik today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Seguin Music Shed on Friday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. followed by Pivo & Polka Band from 6 to 9 p.m.; Randy Burkheart on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., The Oompah’s from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and Lederhosen Junkies on Sunday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

All live music is free.

Navarro falls to 3rd-ranked Davenport while Seguin and Marion earn wins Chris Austin

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers jumped on the 3rd-ranked team in Class 4A early but the Davenport Lady Wolves showed why they’re one of the top teams in the state in taking down Navarro in four sets, 11-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 on Tuesday night in Geronimo.

“I would argue they are one of the best teams in the region,” Navarro head coach Paige Poth said about Davenport after the match. “So our fight tonight was exactly where it needed to be especially going into playoffs. I was very proud of the girls. They came out starting and that’s been one of the areas we’ve had to work on - starting a game. And they came out and started a game and I was very impressed with them.”

The Lady Wolves improved 37-4 overall on the season. Davenport is 9-0 in District 27-4A play.

Navarro was lead by senior Taylor Helms who had 19 kills on the evening. Kate Wozniak, Brooklyn

Fox and Taylor’s sister Morgan were active at the net on the night coming up with a number of blocks and kills. Avary Sisak was proficient in setting up her hitters coming up with numerous assists and Tegan Harborth was busy on the back line coming up with several digs.

Navarro is 6-3 in District 27-4A. The Lady Panthers are one game behind second place Wimberley.

Navarro has three more games left in the regular season. The Lady Panthers play at Bandera on Friday night. They will wrap their season next Friday with a home match against Wimberley.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors got a straight sets win over Veterans Memorial on senior night at Goldie Harris Gym on Tuesday, winning 2521, 25-21, 29-27.

Senior Keighly Dailey lead the Lady Mats with 15 kills and four aces. Senior Alexa Lara had 21 digs and sophomore Gisele Morales had 30 assists.

The Lady Matadors evened their District 265A record at 5-5. Seguin is back home at Goldie Harris on Friday to host Pieper.

(Marion) -- The Marion Lady Bulldogs took down Luling at home Tuesday night 25-12, 25-19, 24-26, 25-9 in a District 26-3A match-up.

The Lady Bulldogs were lead by Kamryn Garza and Jaida Rideaux who each had eight kills.

Kacee McLendon added 26 assists and five aces.

Bristin Birdwell had 9 digs.

Marion hosts Great Hearts Monte Vista for senior night this coming Friday night at Marion High School.

Frank Torres III, known fondly as “Champ”, passed away on October 7, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and artistic brilliance. Born on August 31, 1988, in Seguin, Texas, Champ brought joy and happiness to everyone he encountered throughout his life.

Champ will always be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family.

He cherished every moment spent with his family and his love for them knew no bounds. The memories they shared together will forever be treasured and held close to their hearts.

A kind and welcoming soul, Champ was known for his random acts of kindness that touched the lives of many. His selflessness knew no bounds as he consistently went out of his way to brighten someone’s day.

He had a heart full of love that overflowed onto others.

In addition to his kind nature, he was an exceptionally hard worker and possessed immense artistic talent. His passion for engraving left an indelible mark on the world around him. His love and passion for welding was shown in all of the work he put into welding. He was a selftaught welder and would often refer to himself as the “One Eyed Welder”.

Beyond these artistic pursuits, he had a passion for boxing and working

out and indulging in the simple pleasures of watching movies at home with his loved ones. Sports played a significant role in Champ’s life as well. He was an avid fan of both the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Antonio Spurs.

Champ was a cherished member of his family who adored him deeply.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Guadalupe and Maria Luna; uncles Guadalupe Luna Jr., Enrique Luna, and Robert Gallegos; aunt Lucy Gallegos. Left behind to honor his memory is his wife of 14 years, Alyssa Torres; children Javen Rivera, Xaver Gomez (Angela Garcia), Jayla Gomez, and Garrett Anthony Torres; his beloved pet, Bellie; parents, Frank Torres Jr. and Angelita Luna Torres; siblings, Toni Torres and Jesse Torres (Chelsie); nephew Aiden Torres, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and countless friends.

Laretta Joy Schulze, age 59, of San Marcos, Texas passed away on October 9, 2023. She was born on August 27, 1964, to Irene G. (Braune) and Larry August Schulze.

Jesus “Jesse” G. Leal, age 91 of Seguin, has peacefully passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Jesse was born on April 5, 1932 in Guadalupe County to Jose and Maria (Garza) Leal.

Jesse served on the Seguin City Council for ten years, from May 1960 April 1970. He also served as Mayor Pro Tem. He also served on the City Council Board during the approval of Guadalupe Valley Hospital, Seguin High Rise, and The Seguin Fire Department on Vaughn Street just to name a few of Jesse’s many accomplishments during his years on the City Council Board. He was a man of his Faith, his Country, his community, and his family. He helped break ground at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church as well as serving in many areas of the church. He was a proud military veteran serving in the Korean War. Although Jesse had an illustrious career in the community. Above all those things Jesse loved and devoted his life to his family. He loved going to dances and dancing with his beloved wife. Jesse loved spending time with his family going to the river on weekends, and picnicking with his children, in Galveston, as well as Corpus Christi. He also enjoyed deer hunting, fishing with his sons and son-in-laws, and golfing with his brothers. Jesse was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed taking his family to games at the Astro Dome and Astro World. He enjoyed spending time at the flea market after retirement.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Criselda “Cris” (Serna) Leal, his son, Jaime S. Leal, his granddaughter, Chris Marie Alvarado, and his parents.

Survivors include his children, Hector S. CDC: Long COVID Rare Among Children (Atlanta, GA) -- New CDC data shows that long COVID is rare among children. A survey by the National Center for Health Statistics shows just over one-percent of children had long COVID in 2022 and now only half a percent have it. Reported symptoms of long COVID include changes in mental health, fatigue, or neurological damage.

Talks Resume Between Nurses, RWJ University Hospital (New Brunswick, NJ) -- Talks have resumed in New Jersey between striking nurses and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital -- again, with a mediator involved. The two sides met Friday with a mediator to try to resolve the two-month-old strike over better pay and staffing ratios as well as a cap on health insurance costs. Hospital officials say the major issue both sides are trying to resolve is enforceable staffing levels.

AG Moody To Block Abortion Amendment (Tallahassee, FL) -- Those trying to get an abortion amendment into Florida’s constitution are facing a roadblock. Attorney General Ashley Moody submitted a filing to the state Supreme Court yesterday asking the court to review the wording of an amendment proposed for the November 2024 ballot. Floridians Protecting Freedom is proposing an amendment that would make it illegal for the state to ban abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health. Moody claims the proposal doesn’t satisfy the legal requirements for ballot placement and says she’ll provide details in another court filing.

UofL Receives Grant to Train New Doctors (Louisville, KY) -- University of Louisville is the recipient of a 16-million-dollar grant. The grant was received from the Health Resources and Services Administration on Monday. The school plans to use the four-year grant to train doctors in areas that can serve underprivileged communities throughout Kentucky. University officials state Kentucky is suffering from a severe shortage of healthcare workers.
