Retail hopes, development well underway in Seguin SEDC officials share update on second Walmart, plus Chick-fil-A

(Seguin) - It doesn’t look like the COVID-19 pandemic has shut the door on Seguin when it comes to future box stores, restaurants and retail development. During a week when the city of Seguin reported a continued decrease in unemployment numbers and a boom in housing, more retail also looks to be on the horizon. Josh Schneuker, the executive director for the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, says one of the most visible sites preparing for new business is off of State Highway 46 at what will likely be called the West Seguin Martketplace.

“That property is about 24 acres. It kind of does a little L shaped wrap around Caterpillar there at the southwest corner of 46 and C.H. Matthies. What we’ve got under construction there is a Divita. That’s going to be a dialysis clinic. There’s also going to be a Burger King and a Chicken Express that are going

to be built there -- that were sold. The developer that’s working on this project. He’s out from San Antonio and we’ve been working very closely with him making sure that we are connecting that developer with a lot of the prospects that we’ve been actively working to recruit to Seguin over the past several years,” said Schneuker.

Now although the pandemic hasn’t caused recent projects to come off the table, it has unfortunately, put a hold on their actual next steps toward building.

Schneuker says this is especially true for at least one fast food chain favorite in which talks are now no longer “if” but “when.’

RETAIL, continued from page 1 “One thing related to COVID and retail is that a lot of these retailers have put what they are referring to as a COVID hold on their development. For example, we know that Chick-fil-A and Discount Tire, a couple of targeted retailers that we have been actively pursuing, they have put holds on any new development at this time. Of course, Chickfil-A, it’s always the big one. It’s really a case of when not if those retailers are going to be coming into the community, but we anticipate their activity will begin to ramp up either towards the end of the year or the start of 2021 and just from talking to those companies, we expect that there’s going to be a lot of demand for new retail so we anticipate that those companies will end up making up for a lot of lost ground in 2020 and being very aggressive with their developments in 2021 which I think is going to go well for Seguin because there’s again, a lot of growing interest with those targeted retailers in our market --” said Schneuker.

It was around that time that they started feeling the Amazon effect and made the decision as a company to put the brakes on a lot of brick and mortar facilities and invest that money into a better plan to grow their e-commerce business,” said Schneuker.

Despite this latest news on the Walmart store, Schneuker says the city remains confident in its current talks with other big boxes and maybe even some entertainment users that can hopefully serve as catalysts for some larger scale developments.

“But where we anticipate seeing a lot of growth just in terms of new retail coming out of the ground where folks actually go in and experience it is really going to be on your fast casual dining, some of your general merchandise stores I think are some that we will start being able to see a big increase into our market hopefully in 2021. A lot of our hard work on the recruitment side, we can hopefully start to finally be able to have some really good news for the community on those recruitment efforts,” said Schneuker.

Now while Seguin braces for new retail, it also recently had to adhere to some major changes regarding property along the frontage road at State Highway 46 and Interstate 10. That’s because Schneuker says the plan for a second Walmart in Seguin is no longer in the works.

“In April, we received word that Walmart is now looking to sell that property. We still haven’t received any official word on it that means that everything is permanently cancelled. Our assumption is that they are likely not going to move forward with that second store right now. The good news is that we do have a lot of housing in the pipeline right now. We are seeing growing interests from a lot of the targeted retailers so there might not be a second Walmart coming into the Seguin market immediately or anytime soon but many of the retailers that were interested in the area around the Walmart at the time (when) the project was active - continue to look at Seguin and we are moving in a closer direction I think with being able to hopefully, successfully recruit a lot of those retailers here,” said Schneuker.

Schneuker says the news about Walmart isn’t surprising as recruitment efforts with these brick and mortar big box companies have also had to change. He says even before the pandemic, companies were finding themselves transitioning into a new way of doing things - things now being driven through e-commerce.

“When Walmart was looking to do their second store at that time, you can go by and

The residential growth has a lot to do with that. A lot of these decision makers for the retailers and the commercial real estate brokers that work with them are seeing the housing coming in. They are seeing how fast it is coming in and they are really encouraged by that.

We are continuing to work with that developer and other property owners and sites to make sure that we are putting our best foot forward to recruit a lot of the targeted retailers that we know that the community wants to see here. I think it’s going to be definitely sooner rather than later that you see a lot of them start to come in here” said Schneuker.

The majority of other future projects for Seguin will continue to remain private as companies work toward negotiations to either build or move into vacant properties throughout the city.

Panthers stunned by Gobblers in 42-21 road loss (Cuero) - The previously winless Cuero Gobblers delivered their best performance of the season Friday to hand Navarro a 42-21 loss on homecoming night at Gobbler Stadium.

Navarro took an early 7-0 lead on Orlando Ortiz’s 26-yard touchdown run after a blocked punt by Brian Holmes and recovery by Ben Muniga, but it was all Cuero from that point.

The Gobblers capped drives of 71, 77, and 59 yards with a touchdown run by Tycen Williams and two by Jackson Hardwick to put the Panthers in a 21-7 hole midway through the second quarter.

Navarro pulled made it a one-score game, 21-14, on Brody Whitson’s two-yard run with 1:02 left in the half, but Cuero reclaimed the momentum in the blink of an eye with a 47-yard touchdown strike from Jerry Rossett to Williams just 40 seconds later. The Panthers trailed 28-14 at halftime.

Cuero used a Donovin Jones interception to set up 10-yard TD pass from Rossett to Hardwick with 2:08 left in the third quarter, and the margin was 35-14 heading into the fourth.

Hardwick capped Cuero’s scoring from six yards out to put the Gobblers up 42-14 with 7:14 to play after Sam Muniga’s shoestring tackle of Williams from behind limited what would have been an 84-yard touchdown to a 73-yard gain.

Navarro quarterback Nick Billings powered across the goal line from eight yards away with 3:14 left, and Sebastian Sneed completed a 3-3 night on PAT kicks to make the final margin 21 points.

Navarro head coach Rod Blount credited Cuero for playing its best game of the young season after struggling in losses to La Vernia, Wimberley, and Yoakum.

“They were playing good defense, they did a good job, they came fired up,” Blount said. “This was a make or break for them, 0-3 coming in, they’re playing their homecoming, they’ve got to step up and play a good game, and they did, and we didn’t respond well.”

Sam Muniga led Navarro in rushing for the second straight week, totaling 97 yards on 17 carries. He also coralled a 24-yard reception on a pass from Billings.

Whitson finished with 80 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The absence of starting receiver and safety James Brinsley, linebacker Andrew Guerra, and fullback/ linebacker Cole Mouser affected Navarro on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense. Cuero piled up 396 yards of total offense and produced its highest scoring output of the season by 21 points.

For Blount, the process of bouncing back from the loss and moving forward to preparation for the final non-district game against Giddings starts immediately.

“We’ve just got to reset, and we’ve got to come to work every day,” the coach said. “We have a tough non-district schedule, we’ve got to be ready to play every single week, guys have got to step up throughout the season, and we just kind of missed it tonight. We’ll reload and get back after it tomorrow.”

Navarro (1-2) hosts Giddings (3-1) this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Erwin-Lee Field.

Hondo hands Marion second straight loss

(Hondo) - Marion concluded the nondistrict portion of its 2020 football schedule with a 49-17 road loss to Hondo on Friday at Barry Field.

The Owls racked up 535 yards of total offense and limited the visiting Bulldogs 228.

Dominic Castellanos scored Marion’s first touchdown on a 90-yard interception return to knot the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter.

The Owls (4-0) reeled off 28 straight points from that juncture, and the Bulldogs didn’t score again until Juan Ortiz drilled a 30-yard field goal to make it 35-10 with 7:37 left in the third period.

Tanner Beakley tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Blakely for Marion’s final points in the closing seconds of the game.

Beakley went 14-27 through the air for 151 yards, and he ran for 61 yards on 14 carries. Blakely finished with a season-

high 92 receiving yards on five catches.

Hondo running-back Trey Dickens rushed for 194 yards and three scores on 27 carries, and quarterback Brandon Garcia finished 11-18 for 241 yards and an interception.

Marion (2-2) opens the District 14-3A-Division I schedule this Friday at Veterans Stadium when Jourdanton (3-1) visits Veterans Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Seguin - The Matadors split their dual match in Castroville, coming up short to Medina Valley in three sets before edging Judson in five.

Seguin fell to Medina Valley 25-13, 25-9, and 25-18. The Mats won the first two sets over Judson 25-20, 25-16, dropped the third and fourth 25-23, 25-23, and recovered to win the fifth 15-11. Seguin (1-3) plays its home opener against Southside this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Free Hazardous Waste Pick-Up

The City of Seguin was awarded an Alamo Area Council of Governments Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program grant and is offering residents who live in the city limits an opportunity to participate in the At Your Door Special Collection Program. Items accepted include pesticides, household chemicals, sharps, electronic waste, including televisions, batteries, fluorescent lights, automotive waste products (including oil), paints, thinners, and dozens of other items that don’t belong with your recyclables or regular curbside waste pickup. GRMC Limited Visitor Access

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is temporarily limiting visitor access to protect the health of its patients and staff, and in the interest of limiting exposure to respiratory illness associated with the COVID-19 virus. Exceptions include: End of life, childbirth, goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment, and designated caregiver of a pediatric patients.

Additionally, no visitors will be allowed for COVID patients in the Public Health Emergency unit (PHE) or ICU during this time. The Central Entrance is open Monday through Friday 5:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the ER entrance is open 24 hours a day.

Solis Reynaldo “Reybob” Solis, age 68 of Seguin, Texas passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Broadway Clayton “ChayBird” Broadway, age 61 of Seguin, passed away on September 14, 2020.

Clayton was born on February 17, 1959 in Freeport, Texas to Harry “Jimmy” and Ellen Louise (Mattsen) Broadway.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jimmy Broadway and Mike Broadway, mother-in-law, Virginia Jahns, brothers-in-law, Nathan Jahns and Robbie Jahns.

A memorial service celebrating “Chay-Bird’s” life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel.

Mundt

Timothy “Tim” John Mundt, age 60 of Seguin, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving family by his side on September 14, 2020.

Tim was born on July 1, 1960 and grew up in Overland Park, KS.

He loved tagging along with his dad to the AP, where he worked, watching all the news come in over the wire while his Dad was typing up the news with 2 fingers.

Tim graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School and went on to graduate from K-State University.

He loved his Alma mater and loved to watch his K-State football and basketball. He also loved his KC Chiefs and Royals. Tim went on to Wichita, KS to work for Boeing.

In 1989, on a trip back to Overland Park to visit family, he met Jan. After a whirlwind long distance courtship, Jan and her 3 young boys moved to Wichita!

New Braunfels, TX where Tim joined the family business, Altex Electronics, and worked for 30 years.

Tim was very involved in his boys lives through baseball and the New Braunfels Little League.

He started first as a coach and also served on the board as President, being very instrumental in the building of the new little league fields.

In 1996, Tim and Jan expanded their family with their precious daughter, Rebecca. Rebecca was her Papa’s girl.

He loved taking their yearly trips to Kansas to see Gram and supported Rebecca in everything she desired. In Tim’s words, “Each new day is an adventure,” and he loved watching his kids take on that adventure!

Tim was most happy at the family ranch where he enjoyed the barbeques, birthday parties, and having fun.

Tim loved his family dearly. He enjoyed watching them grow and play. He found his joy in their happiness and sharing the many blessings they had.

Tim loved the Lord, his family, and others. He was a selfless man that gave with his heart to all in need.

Tim will live on through his loving wife of 31 years, Jan (Myers) Mundt. His sons, Nick Rozell and wife Katy, Jake Rozell, J.T. Rozell; daughter, Rebecca Mundt; grandchildren, Nikki, Khloe, Jessy, Emma Jo, Kynndra, and Khyler Rozell; his mother who raised him, Bobbie (Herd) Mundt; siblings, Cheryl Pebley and husband Tom, Rod Herd and wife Deb, Greg Herd and wife Sheila, and Jeff Herd and partner Lupe; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

A walkthrough visitation will be held on Friday, September 25th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel, Private interment will be held at a later date.

He graduated from Seguin High School in 1961 and will be remembered as the Assistant Tennis Coach at Seguin High School for many years.

Coach Wood is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Wood.

Global Coronavirus Cases Surpass 30 Million

(Undated) -- The number of coronavirus cases is hitting another grim milestone. Data from Johns Hopkins University shows the global count surpassed 30-million on Thursday. The number hit ten million infections only 12 weeks ago. The U.S. has the most cases out of all countries, and combined with India and Brazil, account for over half of the total count. The death toll around the world is over 943-thousand.

Ice Cream Maker Whacked With Record Fine

(San Antonio, TX) -- A federal court in Texas has ordered ice cream maker Blue Bell to pay 17-point-two-five-million-dollars in criminal penalties linked to a 2015 listeria outbreak. There were ten cases in four states, including three deaths in Kansas. The fine and forfeiture amount is the largest-ever criminal penalty following a conviction in a food safety case. In a statement, the Justice Department says that American consumers must be able to trust that the foods they purchase are safe to eat.

Moderna Says Its Vaccine Won’t Be Ready Until Hershey Maps Out Counties For Safe Trick-OrNext Year Treating (Cambridge, MA) -- One of the leading candidates to develop a COVID-19 vaccine says it’s unlikely it will be ready to go this year. Moderna released a 135-page report Thursday detailing its late-stage trial. The document says an analysis of the large-scale trial may not start until late December, and there may not be enough information to determine if the vaccine works. It says later analyses in March and May will likely have an answer. Moderna’s vaccine is currently being tested in a study with more than 25-thousand volunteers.

(Hershey, PA) -- Hershey’s is helping trick-or-treaters keep the chocolate flowing this Halloween, in the safest way possible. The candy company has launched a new website amid the pandemic.

It maps out neighborhoods by their “risk level,” including stats on recent infection rates and total cases. It also offers suggestions for each area. For example, trick-or-treating or small outdoor costume parties in low-risk green zones. But for red zones, it advises Zoom parties or scary movies on Netflix.
