Have you completed your park survey?

City seeking grant funds for sidewalks

Parks and Recreation Department hoping to reach at least 1,000 park surveys some things that we need as we go forward as we become a bigger city," said Jones. The city launched the survey at the end of August and has been really working hard to get people to fill out the 20 question survey. He says they want to know what you miss seeing at the parks, whether there needs to be more leagues, whether there needs to be more facilities for sports, recreation or even the arts and also what special events you would like to see hosted at the various parks.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Are you among the 889 people who have already filled out their park survey? If you answered yes, then the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department wants to thank you. But if not, it says there is still plenty of time to help the city reach its goal of 1,000 surveys and all while sharing your thoughts and ideas for facilities, programs and other opportunities that you would like

to see in Seguin.Jack Jones, says the deadline is nearing for folks to take part in the special online survey seeking ideas for the city's park master plan. He says in order to secure any and all future plans, the ideas need to be put on the table today. "As the park's director, I hear what we don't have. I hear a lot of the good things about what we do have but I hear the things we don't have and so we are hearing some of that. In the feedback already is

"What I've been seeing is I think people are excited about the future of Seguin Parks and Recreation. I think they see that we have come a long way especially since the 2013 parks and recreation bond election. That was a big investment into the quality of life of folks living here in Seguin. But I think that gets folks excited about 'okay, what can we do next?' We've got over the next 10 years, 20,000 more people moving here so how do we take care of those folks coming in? They are probably all coming in from other cities and bigger cities and they have all these recreational opportunities and park opportunities and of course, we have a lot of parks here and folks are taking advantage of our parks but we don't have a whole lot of recreational opportunities as far as within my department for like classes and programs so bigger cities have those kinds of activities -- rec centers, indoor natatoriums and it seems like that as you grow in population, that is what folks are going to expect as we get bigger," said Jones. Put our experience to work for you.

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is looking for more ways to enhance the pedestrian mobility experience in downtown Seguin. The city's Main Street program is seeking a $350,000 grant that would be used to make sidewalk improvements in the downtown historic district. Main Street Director Kyle Kramm says the city has made a commitment over the last several years to improve the condition of sidewalks and crosswalks in the downtown area. "We are working on a grant application right now for the Texas Department of Agriculture. It's a community development block grant, which comes through HUD to the Texas Department of Agriculture. Communities of 50,000 or less can apply for these grants to address infrastructure and revitalization of their downtowns. We have been successful with this grant application in the past. I think this will be our third time to apply. We were awarded one in 2016, that we used to address some sidewalk needs on the south side of the downtown district," said Kramm. See GRANT, page 2
