She says with its new location at the former Juan Seguin Campus, the church felt that this was the perfect opportunity to help ease those anxieties and help people prepare for this next year.

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin needs your help in spreading word about this week’s Mega Food Distribution event.

Residents in communities all across Guadalupe County are invited to sign-up to receive free food on Thursday at the Seguin Events Complex.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city, says on Monday, only 337 families that signed up for the event. She says that’s only about a third of the number of families that traditionally sign-up for the event.

“We want to send families and kids back to school with full stomachs so this is a really great time to be able to take advantage of this and we want to get as many community members signed up as possible. You know the more community members that take part in this, the possibility that we will be having more of these food distributions in the future. We just had one a couple of weeks ago so registration might be a little bit slow right now. That might be a reason for it but you still have time to regis-

Guadalupe County Commissioners approve proposed tax rate, adoption set for later this month

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is approaching the final steps in its budget process for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Commissioners recently approved the proposed tax rate of 38.54 cents per $100 of property valuation.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says the rate before taxpayers does not exceed the No New Revenue Rate, previously known as the effective tax rate or the Voter Approval Rate.

“We have a maintenance operation rate at .3184; lateral road rate at five cents, debt service rate at .017 and the total tax rate at .3854 and the new revenue rate was calculated at .3854 -- when we were going through the budget process because of the new tax form, the new calculation and some rounding, it actually came back after we went through our budget workshops at .3855. So technically, we are just under the no new revenue rate at the proposed rate and proposed budget,” said Kutscher.

With the challenges that existed this past year, Kutscher believes the breakdown of funds is still a very conservative approach in ensuring that the county is able to cover its operational budget.

“I first want to take the opportunity to thank all of the departments for really working hard, trying to trim what they could out of their budgets knowing it was going to be a difficult year, trying to look out for the taxpayers’ best interest, knowing how we were going to be affected by COVID - some of these small businesses, the state mandated restrictions and closures but the real reason commissioners that the tax rate is at .3854 even though it is at the no new revenue rate or just under it, it’s above last year’s rate because of the lake appraisal. BLESS, continued from page 1 “Usually, every year, bless backpacks in the context of worship and we invite our parents, educators, kiddos to come and receive a blessing before the beginning of the school year and obisvouly, we are not going to be able to be together in person this year so we wanted to figure out a way that we could still bless students, parents, educators, staff everybody who is going to be teaching and learning this fall especially knowing that this year is just filled with anxiety and stress and unknowns and people and parents and educators are all overwhelmed. Kids are not going to have the school year that they dreamed of and so we wanted to create a space that would acknowledge that and also celebrate at the same time and say that you are loved. You are blessed and we want to pray for you as you go into this new year,” said Elliott.

Elliott says the move into the former Juan Seguin campus has allowed them to hopefully reach more people.

“We really wanted as we moved into this space to have a way to connect with our new neighborhood and our new neighbors and to be more grounded in the community and we had all these plans heading into 2020 of what that was going to look like and then, we are not able to do a lot of those things that we wanted to do. So, we just said, ‘okay, how

are we going to connect? How are we going to meet and get to know our neighbors?’ We said ‘well, why don’t we just take all of these creative parades that people have been doing for birthdays and baby showers and all of that and turn it into our own parade in which all of our neighbors are invited to come and be blessed and to celebrate,” said Elliott.

Elliott says church members have been excited in planning for this event and hopes that as many families as possible come out to celebrate and hand their worries over to God. “We are going to ask everybody to enter Dolle on the south side and head north through the campus.

We are going to have different stations set up. I want to give a huge shout out to Adrian Davila from Davila’s BBQ. They are providing 100 meals for us to hand out. So, the first 100 people that come through the line will get a free meal courtesy of Davila’s BBQ which is just amazing and incredible and we are just grateful for that support. The whole thing is going to be decorated and festive with signs and balloons and all kinds of exciting things and then we going to be handing out reusable water bottles and hand sanitizer and some really great stickers that kids can stick on their water bottle, or their laptop or their backpack or their notebook that will just remind them that God

Elliott says students are especially reminded to bring their backpacks, laptops or any other learning materials to the event.

“We will also have some school supplies available if anybody is struggling to acquire the school supplies that they need for this year. We’ve been collecting those and we will be able to distribute some of those and then finally, the grand finale will be that I will be at the very end blessing each car that comes through and just helping folks remember that God is with them in the midst of the craziness of this year and that they are loved and that they are cherished,” said Elliott.

The Blessing of the Backpacks Drive-Through Parade will be held today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the former Juan Seguin Campus located just behind the Seguin Police Department.

(Karnes City) - Junior quarterback Tanner Beakley scored the tying touchdown with 40 seconds left, and Juan Ortiz nailed the ensuing kick to boost Marion past Karnes City 14-13 in Saturday’s season opener at Poss Johnson Field.

The Badgers faced fourth-and-11 at the Marion 32 yard line and clung to a 13-7 lead with just over a minute left, and the Bulldogs were out of timeouts.

(Atlanta, GA) -- A new report from the Centers for Disease Control shows a vast majority of people who have died from COVID-19 had an underlying health condition. In only six percent of cases was novel coronavirus the only cause of death in cases from February 1st to August 22nd, the CDC reports. The leading underlying conditions related to death from COVID are the flu and pneumonia, respiratory failure, hypertensive disease, diabetes, and vascular and unspecified dementia.

Govett Jessie Lee McKee Govett, age 52 of Seguin, passed away on August 27, 2020.

Jessie Lee McKee was born on July 10, 1968 to Patsy Ann McKee. After his mother’s death on September 11, 1969, Jessie would join the family of his aunt and uncle, Clara Lee and Reginald Norman (Windy) Govett, who would love and cherish him as their own son. Jessie would also gain two brothers, Norman Dale and Randle Lee Govett. Jessie attended only Seguin ISD Campuses and was a proud 1987 graduate of Seguin High School. He was currently working at Nesbit’s Living and Recovery.

Jessie always wanted to work and held several jobs including Home Depot, H-E-B, and Wal-Mart.

His longest held job was at Burger King on the Bypass from 1986 until the restaurant closed in 1999.

Jessie started taking online classes and had his Associate Degree in bookkeeping and accounting, computer training as well as medical coding and billing. He also had a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Management.

Jessie loved the Lord and his Church family and was an active member of First Baptist Church in Seguin. He especially loved his Men’s Breakfast Group and his Senior

Jessie also had a God given talent of playing the piano.

Survivors include his brothers, Norman Govett and wife Melba and Randle Govett and wife Illene; uncle and aunt, Allen McKee and wife Marilyn; and aunt Beverly McKee; as well as numerous cousins, other loving family members and many many friends.

A walk through line visitation will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2020 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary.

Private family services will be held with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating.

Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.

Mauermann A. Kelly Mauermann, age 61 of Seguin, Texas passed away on August 27, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dee Mauermann and his grandson, Brooks Mitchell Mauermann.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Rose Mauermann; sons, Kristopher A. Mauermann (Amber), Ryan M. Mauermann (Lindsay); sister, Analisa Kennedy (Steven); brothers, Thomas R. Mauermann, Terry M. Mauermann; grandchildren, Aislynn, Andon; niece, Shannon Sawyer (Jeff); nephews, Scotty Kennedy and Travis M. Mauermann; great-nephew, Landin M. Kelly was a true outdoors man. He enjoyed spending time on his ranch hunting and ranching.

Mass Food Distribution Events

There will be a Mass Food Distribution Event hosted by the City of Seguin, GRMC, and the New Braunfels Food Bank from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at the Seguin Coliseum parking lot, located at 950 S. Austin St. in Seguin. Registration is required. Vouchers will not be distributed. Volunteers are also needed. Registration should be completed by Wednesday, Sept. 2 by calling from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Seguin City Hall and Library Closure

The non-emergency offices at Seguin City Hall and the Seguin Public Library will be closed Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of Labor Day. The offices will re-open on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Garbage and recycling will be collected as normal.

Drive Through Lights of Hope Event

There will be a Drive Through Lights of Hope Event for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Seguin Silver Center, located at 510 E. American Legion Riders Nut Run 7

The American Legion Riders will have its Nut Run 7 beginning with registration at 9 a.m. and first bike out at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at the SS American Memorial located at 450 Naumann Road in Seguin. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger.

GRMC Limited Visitor Access

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is temporarily limiting visitor access to protect the health of its patients and staff, and in the interest of limiting exposure to respiratory illness associated with the COVID-19 virus.

Exceptions include: End of life, childbirth, goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment, and designated caregiver of a pediatric patients.
