Seguin ISD shares latest changes in Back to School protocols Clarification in masks, lunch schedule being shared by district officials

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is outlining a few of its latest changes in how it hopes to welcome back students this coming school year.

Cantu says while the Blueprint establishes the operation of a campus for next school year, he reminds parents that things are expected to continuously change.

So keeping up with the Blueprint is vital.

As the first day of school fast approaches, the school district is doing its part to help families better prepare for what will be expected, especially if their child will be returning to the classroom.

Seguin ISD Chief Academic Officer Mark Cantu shared some of the changes and updates to the protocols during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees.

With that being said, the first change announced by Cantu can be found on page 21 of the Blueprint document currently available on the district’s website. The change pertains to isolation protocols – protocols Cantu says will be taken should the campus suspect that the child is infected with the COVID-19 virus.

To better mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Cantu says an update and change have also been added on page 23-24 of the Blueprint regarding the use of masks.

Initially, the plan was to have all the meals served in the classroom and not bring the congregated groups into the cafeteria.

However, the problem is once you take the masks off, then social distancing becomes that much more important and that’s going to be necessary wherever you are eating. So, there was a revision made to the master schedule at all of the elementary campuses and they are going to serve lunch for each grade level and by doing that, they are able to minimize the number of students congregating in the cafeteria at any lunch. So, the lunches are going to be served at the elementariness in the cafeteria by grade level,” said Hillberg.

Cantu adds that everyday, the district is working more and more to fine tune protocols for its daily meals.

“The idea is we will have a lunch period for every single grade level ranging between 20 and 25 minutes which is plenty of time for an elementary school student to eat and so that they can go out for recess if the time allows but that will also give us just enough time to be able to clean all the areas for the next grade level to come in. So, it’s really tight but we believe that instead of having the three lunch periods the way we usually do, the five lunch periods will serve the students better.

District officials say face shields will be purchased by the district for all elementary school age children. No face shield can be worn alone. A face mask will have to accompany it. The same goes for anyone in a campus building.

“Depending on the local level so this is kind of an evolving matrix but where we are right now, kids will actually have face shields so they can remove their masks, keep their face shield on and eat breakfast. We feel like that made the classroom environment safer.

The goal was also to maintain social distancing but until, we know how many students are in each individual classroom, that may not be possible in all the classrooms to maintain that six foot social distancing. So, the face shield as TEA puts it is a mitigated factor so as many mitigating factors that you can put in play, so masks and the face shields and hand sanitizer and all these things going on -the goal is to keep COVID from spreading. So lunch room then is where they will go at lunchtime and depending on whether or not you can social distance, we can also at the elementary school use face shields again. So, we have all tried. We have practiced eating with face shields. It is very doable and it just keeps people safer than just having them eat with nothing,” said Legore.

Legore says that face shields will be purchased and provided for each elementary school student only. She says social distancing is a little easier to provide at the secondary level.

“Secondary schools just look at little different and you can use more spaces for lunch so like at the high school with the library and other open areas and then at the elementary schools with some of the large spaces of fine arts and athletics and what not -- looking at how you can expand lunch areas. So that’s what they looked for there. The reason is face shields with elementary students can be given a spot in the room and the kids are all there. In the secondary, that all goes out the window because kids have multiple classrooms and if you stick a face shield in a backpack, it will not last long. Plus, kids get to middle school and things you can convince an elementary student to do doesn’t necessarily fly with a teenager,” said Legore.

The actual time period allotted for lunch is also expected to be shortened to 20 minutes. The idea, according to district officials, is to allow kids some time to hit the playgrounds and so that there is also enough time for staff to disinfect an eating space for the next grade level.

The district is also keeping families updated on some changes in regards to lunch for those learning remotely. Hillberg says at it stands now, kids needing a hot lunch will be required to pick up their lunch at their respective campus instead of at just one school as they did this summer.

“The desire, obviously, would be that you just go to one location to pick up the meals. However, regulations are not allowing for that right now. The student that is being served the meal, even though it’s remote, has to be identified with that campus as it stands at the moment. That is subject to change.

We saw a number of changes in terms of how meal services took place over the summer. We saw that a lot in the spring and so, we are expecting there is going to be some adjustment here and what we are sharing right now is just what we are obligated to if we are going to continue to get the federal funding and that’s really key,” said Hillberg.

It is also expected that while the student does not have to be in the vehicle, a student ID will be required. Again, the latest changes are highlighted in red text and can be found on pages 21, 23, 24 and 37 of the Seguin ISD”s Blueprint document. Navarro volleyball earns road win over Poth, set to host Friday match vs. Marion

(Poth) - Navarro extended its winning streak to four matches in impressive fashion Tuesday night, pulling away after two gruelling sets to earn a 3-1 road win over Poth.

The Panthers survived the first set 25-22, but the Pirettes recovered to scratch out a 30-28 win in the second.

The coast of both states is in for deadly storm surges, extreme winds and massive flooding overnight. The Department of Health and Human Services made the declarations to ensure the 20-million affected continue to have access to Medicare and Medicaid.

(Washington, DC) -- The FDA is approving a coronavirus test that gives results in 15 minutes. It’s called BinaxNOW and is about the size of a credit card. It contains a swab to check a person’s nose. A health professional simply adds a few drops of chemicals into a hole, inserts the swab and rotates it. The test is intended for patients to take within seven days of feeling symptoms and is said to accurately detect 97-percent of cases.

(Albany, NY) -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is blasting the CDC in response to a change in COVID-19 testing guidelines, suggesting the agency is engaging in political messaging. Cuomo was responding to the CDC’s announcement that some people who don’t show symptoms probably don’t need a test, even if they’ve been in close contact with someone who’s tested positive. The governor argues the policy change violates public health standards and rationale, adding the state won’t follow CDC guidelines going forward. The CDC has yet to comment on the policy change and referred some reporter’s questions to the Department of Health and Human Services.

(Copenhagen, DK) -- The World Health Organization Director for Europe is calling COVID-19 a tornado with a long tail. Dr. Hans Kluger said the virus is a threat to numerous organs, not just the lungs. The director also warned that with the winter coming, younger residents will be in closer contact with elders. He said if young people don’t take the virus seriously there could be more hospitalizations and an increase in mortality.

Schneider

Orlando A. Schneider, age 81 of Rockport, passed away on August 10, 2020.

Orlando was born on November 16, 1938 in Guadalupe County to Ora Mae (Kwast) and R. E. (Edward) Schneider.

Orlando lived in Seguin during his youth and early adulthood where met and married Carole Lee Sappington.

They had 3 children: Susan, Kenneth, and David. Orlando liked going with the whole family camping and fishing, and also went deer hunting, so that we could make some deer sausage, that we all loved to eat. He worked for Cardelle Terrazzo flooring, he did some concrete work for Lawrence Wahl, and did some fiberglass work off and on, before joining Dover Elevators where he retired after 25 years.

Due to Covid- 19 restrictions, all protocol including limited seating, all wearing face coverings and social distancing will be followed at all locations.

The family understands the Covid-19 uncertainties and the need for everyone to stay safe – they know you have them in your thoughts and prayers.

Orlando was cremated in Aransas Pass at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes and Crematory.

In the early 80’s, Orlando moved to The Valley for work where he met and married Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan. After his retirement they moved to Rockport, where Orlando enjoyed his love of fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Susan Skrzycki and husband Stanley; son, Kenneth Schneider and his wife Leah; and son David Schneider; daughter Denean Schneider; step-children, David Morrison, Michael Morrison (Carla), Robert Kemp (Rhonda), Chiare Kemp Davis, Cleo Jeanette Fleming (Robert), and Diane Kemp; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and many friends.

Orlando’s family would like to express deep gratitude to Home Health Care, and all of its staff throughout the past several years.

Bretzke Irene Weidner Bretzke died August 19, 2020 at the age of 92.

She was born January 4, 1928 in Schumansville, Texas to Walter Carl Weidner and Rosa Simon Weidner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Bretzke, her two brothers, Lawrence Weidner and Walter Weidner Jr., and just recently, her son in law, George Earl Carlisle on July 7, 2020.

Irene graduated from Seguin High School in 1945 and then was employed at Sagebiel’s on Court Street in Seguin.

Donald Ray Wilson aka (lowdown) of Seguin, Texas passed away Tuesday August 18th 2020 at the age of 69 years old.

In October 1972, the family moved from Seguin to San Antonio.

He also loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, especially the years when Roger Staubach was their quarterback.

If you could not find him, he was either at the bay or on a boat. He loved freshwater fishing and gulf fishing with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan Schneider, his parents, and his brother Glenn R. Schneider and his wife Jeanine.

She is survived by her 5 children: Sherry Lynn Carlisle, Nadine Wester and her husband, John Wester, Glenn Roy Bretzke and his wife, Sandy Krueger Bretzke, Rose Renee Bretzke, and Winfred Scott Bretzke and his wife, Shea Earhart Bretzke.

Tankersley

Joyce P. Tankersley, age 91, formerly of Seguin, passed this life on Sunday, August 23rd, in Hallettsville, Texas.

Joyce was born on September 24, 1928 in New Braunfels, Texas, as the first child of Erwin H. Voigt and Ida A. (Gesche) Voigt.

After graduating from Fox Tech High School in San Antonio, she married Leo V. Tankersley on November 20, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas.

She was devoted to family and faith as wife and mother, and servant of Christ.

She leaves behind two sons, four granddaughters, and seven great-grandchildren.

Joyce made homes through her married life in Jourdanton, Refugio, Kingsville, Port Lavaca, San Isidro, and Premont before retiring with Leo in Seguin.

While she was always a full-time mom and wife, she also worked in the Tax Assessor and Collector office of Premont I.S.D. for many years before retiring.

Upon Leo’s retirement from Exxon and Joyce’s retirement from Premont ISD, they moved to Seguin in 1990. They spent their retired years traveling, playing cards and dominoes with friends, and especially enjoyed the many 9 pin bowling leagues they participated in long into their 80’s. They always made time for volunteer work at Forest Hills Baptist Church where they were dedicated members. After the death of Leo in 2016, Joyce moved to Hallettsville where she spent the remainder of her life near many of her family.

Joyce is survived by her sons the Rev. Mr. Michael L. Tankersley (Barbara) of Hallettsville, Texas and Gary W. Tankersley (Kim) of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee; four granddaughters, Jessica Murphy (Pete), Kasey Lucas (Jay), Lauren Tankersley and Meagan Tankersley; and seven great grandchildren, Ava Grace Matias; Myla, Jack, and Ezra Lucas; Levi, Asa, and Lola Murphy. She is also survived by her sister Mary Ann Gross of San Antonio.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Leo, and her parents.

Due to Covid restrictions and concerns, the services will be private with internment at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Mitch Kolenovsky officiating.

Moss Steven Edward Moss Sr., age 55 of Seguin, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020.

Steven was born on April 13, 1965 in San Antonio, Texas to Edward and Evelyn (Biegert) Moss.

Dad was in the army from 1951 until 1954.

Most of dad’s service was in the Northeast and at the White House in Washington D.C., serving Presidents Truman and Eisenhower in the Communication Detachment.

After his honorable discharge, dad came back home and went to work at the old Michna-Salmon Firestone store on four corners.

Soon after he was back in Seguin, he was depositing one of his “big checks” at Nolte Bank when he met Marlene Felsing who worked at the bank.

Steven is preceded in death by his father and infant son Christopher Edward Moss. Survivors include his loving wife Judith Moss; children, Steven Edward Moss Jr., and wife Michelle, Mary Ann Helmke, Gregory Moss and wife Veronica; step-children, Julie Houge and husband William and Scott Baseler and wife Heather; eight grandchildren and one step-grandchild; his mother Evelyn Biegert Moss; brother, David Moss and wife Becky, Gregory Moss and wife Shari, and Ralph Postel and wife Ella; sister-in-law, Jaris Mussotter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, many other family members and many friends.

Dad’s sister, Anna Marie, who also worked at the bank, talked him into asking mom out. Their first date was to a dance at the Legion Hall. Dad was a fantastic polka and waltz dancer. This was the beginning of a courtship that led to a 64 year marriage.

Due to Covid -19 restrictions a private family memorial service will be held.

Dad is preceded in death by his parents, brothers William, Jerome, Leroy, Ruben and Frederick, and sisters Clara, Adelaide, Julia, Ruby, Melitta and Melinda. He is survived by our mom, Marlene, children Craig (Patricia) Reininger, Donna (Gary) Holdgraf, and Rusty (Jennifer) Reininger, sister Anna Marie Schievelbein and her husband Edgar and one Sister-in-Law Leona Reininger.

James is survived by 6 grandchildren, Brittney (Matt) Thorne, Taylor (Courtney) Holdgraf, Mason Reininger, Claire Reininger, Madelyn Reininger and Tait Reininger. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Juliet and Emmeline Thorne, Savannah Holdgraf and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Reininger James Edward Reininger passed through death into eternal life on Sunday morning, August 23, 2020, at the age of 88. James was born in New Braunfels on December 24, 1931 to Erhard J. and Leonora Henk Reininger. James grew up on a farm near Barbarossa along with twelve brothers and sisters. James always had many farm chores, but always enjoyed the hard work. James graduated from Navarro High School in 1948 and again in 1949 from Seguin High School.

Following high school, dad worked with his father on the farm until May 26th, 1951 when he followed in the footsteps of all of his brothers and joined the military.

After a short time living in Corpus Christi dad worked in the insurance business for USAA and later for the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 25 great years of delivering mail to Seguin residents.

Dad also enjoyed bowling 9 pin at the Barbarossa and Zorn Bowling alleys. He and his partner Glenvood Lenz bowled together for more than 35 years.

Dad spoiled his 6 grandchildren, and he attended as many of their activities as possible.

We would like to thank all of the staff and friends at the Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center for his care the past 5 years.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The funeral will be on Saturday, August 29th, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Gregory J. Nevlud officiating.

There will be limited seating of 100 at St. James at this time.

The City of Seguin was awarded an Alamo Area Council of Governments Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program grant and is offering residents who live in the city limits an opportunity to participate in the At Your Door Special Collection Program. GRMC Limited Visitor Access

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is temporarily limiting visitor access to protect the health of its patients and staff, and in the interest of limiting exposure to respiratory illness associated with the COVID-19 virus. Exceptions include: End of life, childbirth, goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment, and designated caregiver of a pediatric patients.
