Guadalupe County begins piecing together its future

(Seguin) -- The future of Guadalupe County is officially on the table. Guadalupe County Commissioners on Tuesday discussed a list of capital projects and ways in which to fund them. The discussion was part of a special workshop designed to help commissioners prioritize the projects totaling $8.5 million dollars.

Breaking down the list of projects was Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher.

Kutscher says on top of that renovation/new construction list was the need for a remodel at the Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace, Constable Pct. 4 Office.

The expansion of the current Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office is well on its way. The project is set to be completed See PROJECTS, page 2 by the first of the year. The county’s next batch of proposed projects are also now currently on the table for discussion.

Kutscher says the county also faces a much-needed upgrade to the technology at the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office.

He says cost is estimated at $1 million for the adult detention center and $400,000 at the juvenile center. While upgrades are also needed at the Justice Center, Kutscher does not believe the security system is priority but will need to happen in the next couple of years. With questions of whether they will be required to only purchase American made cameras in the future, Kutscher believes now might just be the right time for the investment.

Crews continue to work on the two-story expansion of the sheriff’s office.

PROJECT, continued from page 2 Kutscher says the county is in a good financial position to move forward as there are plenty of priority projects that need tackling. The one project, however, that the judge believes can be held off a little while longer may just be the Veterans Service Center.

“The Veterans Center is something that Commissioner (Judy) Cope and I have worked on for some time with a group of volunteers and a committee and the idea was to create a rural Veterans Community Center that basically had our Veterans Service Office operate out of but also have buy in from the VA, from mental health professionals and other agencies that assist veterans so a veteran, not only in Guadalupe County but in the entire region could walk in one door and go to five or six different agencies and get help instead of being told every time they go to get assistance, ‘well, you have to go to San Antonio for that,

you’ve got to drive 60 miles back to Austin from wherever your house is for that.’ You’ve always got to go somewhere else. We originally started talking about remodeling the old hospital which was used by Community Council for Head Start which is the old Weinert building. We were talking about $1.7, $1.8, $2million and as you can see, the building hasn’t gotten bigger, it’s just construction costs, time – all those things continue to increase,” said Kutscher.

In addition to prioritizing the projects, Kutscher wanted commissioners to also consider whether they should launch all the projects at the same time. If so, questions of possibly hiring a construction manager will also have to be decided. In the end, Kutscher reminded the court that all projects have merit, and all are important. Continued discussion on the future of the county is expected to continue as the court decides where to go from here. No official action on any of the mentioned projects was taken during Tuesday’s meeting.

SPORTS Marion football adds Week 1 matchup with Karnes City to schedule, Saturday game to air on KWED (Karnes City) - Marion football fans received a pleasant suprise late Tuesday night when the Bulldogs announced the addition of this Saturday’s road game against Karnes City to the front end of the 2020 regular season schedule.

Marion has depth at the quarterback position with 2019 backup Tanner Beakley back for his junior season and sophomore Dillon Sanchez, who threw for 179 yards and a touchdown in last Thursday’s scrimmage against George West.

The Week 1 calendar has been a revolving door for Marion over the past few weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Junior running-back Aden Rackley received the bulk of the carries and scored Marion’s only rushing touchdown in the scrimmage. Sophomore Aidan Rios is also vying for playing time in the backfield.

After cancelling games slated for this Friday against Austin-Hyde Park, Somerset, and Hondo, in that order, the Bulldogs were all but relegated to opening the season in Week 2.

When Marion does find the end zone, the PAT is as automatic as it gets in 3A football. Fourth-year starter and District Kicker MVP Juan Ortiz is the leading scorer in program history after nailing 51 of his 52 extra points in 2019.

That changed when Karnes City’s first-year head coach Daniel Oelschlegel reached out to Marion’s head coach Ryne Miller earlier this week.

As it turns out, the Badgers also found themselves without a Week 1 game when Kenedy dropped the scheduled season opener between the teams due to the coronavirus, so Marion agreed to make the trip to Poss Johnson Field for a Saturday clash.

The Bulldogs head into Miller’s third season as head coach with seven returning offensive starters and six back on defense from the 2019 team that went 8-4, shared the District 15-3A-Division I championship, and advanced to the second round of the UIL playoffs.

Most of Marion’s offensive experience dwells in the trenches, with four of the five offensive linemen who started a year ago back for the 2020 campaign - Bode Walters, Alex Aguilar, Ronnie Winbush, and Cooper Marr. Aguilar, Winbush, and Marr each received AllDistrict recognition in 2019.

Offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Cliff Hill looks for multiple first-year starters to produce at the skill positions after losing last year’s starting quarterback (Zach Goodwin), leading rusher (Ray Rayos), and receptions leader (Jacob Devora) to graduation in the off-season.

The most accomplished returnee in that group is senior receiver Jayden Williams, a two-way All-District performer who piled up a team-high 729 yards with four touchdowns on 45 receptions while running for 134 yards and four scores last fall. Other veterans who bring varsity experience to the receiver room include junior Dillon Blakely, senior Samuel Montoya, and senior Cameron Kistner.

The afforementioned Williams was the District Defensive MVP as a junior linebacker, and is picked to repeat those honors in the 14-3A-Division I ranks this season by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine. Williams recorded 104 tackles and 11 sacks a year ago.

Defensive coordinator Tim Tesch returns plenty of talent and experience in each position group. Rush end Montoya (47 tackles, 10 sacks), and DB Rackley (2 INT, 1 TD) earned First Team All-District accolades in 2019. Defensive tackles Winbish and Walters, linebacker Willie Davis, and defensive backs Blakely, Kistner, and Bryce Gonyer received second team recognition for their contributions last season.

Karnes City, a district opponent of Marion’s in 2018 and ‘19, expects to show continued improvement and contend for a District 15-3A-Division II playoff berth in Oelschlegel’s first season as head coach.

The Badgers return 14 starters, seven on each side of the ball, from the 2019 team that went 5-5 and finished a game back of the fourth and final post-season spot in their old district.

Karnes City’s All-District returnees include Aaron Smith as both a receiver and a defensive back, as well as linebackers Kolby Culpepper and Jacob Peralta, and defensive lineman Ryland Wieding.

Smith totaled 506 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches as a junior in 2019 while coralling three interceptions in the Badgers’ secondary.

Jaramillo led the team in rushing with 446 yards and four touchdowns on 85 carries.

Both players were productive in Karnes City’s 51-27 loss to Marion last October.

Smith pulled in four receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Jaramillo ran for 76 yards and two scores on 11 carries.

(Washington, DC) -- The Centers for Disease Control says healthy people who have been exposed to COVID-19 “do not necessarily need a test” as long as they don’t have symptoms. That’s a reversal from previous advice that clearly recommended testing for all close contacts of infected individuals, regardless of whether they had symptoms. The new recommendation excludes vulnerable individuals, such as older adults and people with chronic medical conditions. It also says that state and local health officials may still recommend a test.

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is telling employees to avoid confrontation with people who don’t want to mask up. New guidance from the agency recommends retail and service industry workers not argue with customers who make threats or become violent. Many businesses have put in mask requirements while visiting their stores. The CDC says those companies can take steps to avoid any workplace violence, like conflict resolution training and putting in security systems. Designated safe areas have also been brought up so employees have somewhere to go if they feel threatened.

(London) -- U.K.-based pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca is moving into human trials of a potential COVID-19 antibody treatment. It’s a mix of two kinds of antibodies they’ll be testing on up to 48 healthy adults. They plan to see if it could be used as both a preventative treatment for the virus and as a medicine for people who already have it. The company received more than 23-million-dollars in funding from the U.S. government to develop an antibody therapy which infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] has called “almost a sure bet.”

(Undated) -- Coronavirus cases in South Dakota and seven other states are being linked to the big motorcycle rally in Sturgis two weeks ago. The North Dakota Department of Health advised anyone who attended the rally to monitor closely for symptoms and get tested at a free testing site.

One of the confirmed cases include a resident who visited One-Eyed Jack’s Saloon on August 11th.

Other states reporting cases linked to the rally include Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, and Washington state.

Schneider

Orlando A. Schneider, age 81 of Rockport, passed away on August 10, 2020.

Orlando was born on November 16, 1938 in Guadalupe County to Ora Mae (Kwast) and R. E. (Edward) Schneider.

Orlando lived in Seguin during his youth and early adulthood where met and married Carole Lee Sappington.

They had 3 children: Susan, Kenneth, and David. Orlando liked going with the whole family camping and fishing, and also went deer hunting, so that we could make some deer sausage, that we all loved to eat. He worked for Cardelle Terrazzo flooring, he did some concrete work for Lawrence Wahl, and did some fiberglass work off and on, before joining Dover Elevators where he retired after 25 years.

Due to Covid- 19 restrictions, all protocol including limited seating, all wearing face coverings and social distancing will be followed at all locations.

The family understands the Covid-19 uncertainties and the need for everyone to stay safe – they know you have them in your thoughts and prayers.

Orlando was cremated in Aransas Pass at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes and Crematory.

Wilson

In the early 80’s, Orlando moved to The Valley for work where he met and married Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan. After his retirement they moved to Rockport, where Orlando enjoyed his love of fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Susan Skrzycki and husband Stanley; son, Kenneth Schneider and his wife Leah; and son David Schneider; daughter Denean Schneider; step-children, David Morrison, Michael Morrison (Carla), Robert Kemp (Rhonda), Chiare Kemp Davis, Cleo Jeanette Fleming (Robert), and Diane Kemp; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and many friends.

Orlando’s family would like to express deep gratitude to Home Health Care, and all of its staff throughout the past several years.

Family also wants to thank his neighbors Don, Roger, and Stanley for all of their help and friendship over the years.

Bretzke Irene Weidner Bretzke died August 19, 2020 at the age of 92.

She was born January 4, 1928 in Schumansville, Texas to Walter Carl Weidner and Rosa Simon Weidner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Bretzke, her two brothers, Lawrence Weidner and Walter Weidner Jr., and just recently, her son in law, George Earl Carlisle on July 7, 2020.

Irene graduated from Seguin High School in 1945 and then was employed at Sagebiel’s on Court Street in Seguin.

Donald Ray Wilson aka (lowdown) of Seguin, Texas passed away Tuesday August 18th 2020 at the age of 69 years old.

In October 1972, the family moved from Seguin to San Antonio.

He also loved watching the Dallas Cowboys, especially the years when Roger Staubach was their quarterback.

If you could not find him, he was either at the bay or on a boat. He loved freshwater fishing and gulf fishing with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (Sandy) Morgan Schneider, his parents, and his brother Glenn R. Schneider and his wife Jeanine.

She is survived by her 5 children: Sherry Lynn Carlisle, Nadine Wester and her husband, John Wester, Glenn Roy Bretzke and his wife, Sandy Krueger Bretzke, Rose Renee Bretzke, and Winfred Scott Bretzke and his wife, Shea Earhart Bretzke.

11 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.

Tankersley

Joyce P. Tankersley, age 91, formerly of Seguin, passed this life on Sunday, August 23rd, in Hallettsville, Texas.

Joyce was born on September 24, 1928 in New Braunfels, Texas, as the first child of Erwin H. Voigt and Ida A. (Gesche) Voigt.

After graduating from Fox Tech High School in San Antonio, she married Leo V. Tankersley on November 20, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas.

She was devoted to family and faith as wife and mother, and servant of Christ.

She leaves behind two sons, four granddaughters, and seven great-grandchildren.

Joyce made homes through her married life in Jourdanton, Refugio, Kingsville, Port Lavaca, San Isidro, and Premont before retiring with Leo in Seguin.

While she was always a full-time mom and wife, she also worked in the Tax Assessor and Collector office of Premont I.S.D. for many years before retiring.

Upon Leo’s retirement from Exxon and Joyce’s retirement from Premont ISD, they moved to Seguin in 1990. They spent their retired years traveling, playing cards and dominoes with friends, and especially enjoyed the many 9 pin bowling leagues they participated in long into their 80’s. They always made time for volunteer work at Forest Hills Baptist Church where they were dedicated members. After the death of Leo in 2016, Joyce moved to Hallettsville where she spent the remainder of her life near many of her family.

Joyce is survived by her sons the Rev. Mr. Michael L. Tankersley (Barbara) of Hallettsville, Texas and Gary W. Tankersley (Kim) of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee; four granddaughters, Jessica Murphy (Pete), Kasey Lucas (Jay), Lauren Tankersley and Meagan Tankersley; and seven great grandchildren, Ava Grace Matias; Myla, Jack, and Ezra Lucas; Levi, Asa, and Lola Murphy. She is also survived by her sister Mary Ann Gross of San Antonio.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Leo, and her parents.

Due to Covid restrictions and concerns, the services will be private with internment at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Mitch Kolenovsky officiating.

Moss Steven Edward Moss Sr., age 55 of Seguin, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020.

Steven was born on April 13, 1965 in San Antonio, Texas to Edward and Evelyn (Biegert) Moss.

Dad was in the army from 1951 until 1954.

Most of dad’s service was in the Northeast and at the White House in Washington D.C., serving Presidents Truman and Eisenhower in the Communication Detachment.

After his honorable discharge, dad came back home and went to work at the old Michna-Salmon Firestone store on four corners.

Soon after he was back in Seguin, he was depositing one of his “big checks” at Nolte Bank when he met Marlene Felsing who worked at the bank.

Steven is preceded in death by his father and infant son Christopher Edward Moss. Survivors include his loving wife Judith Moss; children, Steven Edward Moss Jr., and wife Michelle, Mary Ann Helmke, Gregory Moss and wife Veronica; step-children, Julie Houge and husband William and Scott Baseler and wife Heather; eight grandchildren and one step-grandchild; his mother Evelyn Biegert Moss; brother, David Moss and wife Becky, Gregory Moss and wife Shari, and Ralph Postel and wife Ella; sister-in-law, Jaris Mussotter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, many other family members and many friends.

Dad’s sister, Anna Marie, who also worked at the bank, talked him into asking mom out. Their first date was to a dance at the Legion Hall. Dad was a fantastic polka and waltz dancer. This was the beginning of a courtship that led to a 64 year marriage.

Due to Covid -19 restrictions a private family memorial service will be held.

Dad is preceded in death by his parents, brothers William, Jerome, Leroy, Ruben and Frederick, and sisters Clara, Adelaide, Julia, Ruby, Melitta and Melinda. He is survived by our mom, Marlene, children Craig (Patricia) Reininger, Donna (Gary) Holdgraf, and Rusty (Jennifer) Reininger, sister Anna Marie Schievelbein and her husband Edgar and one Sister-in-Law Leona Reininger.

James is survived by 6 grandchildren, Brittney (Matt) Thorne, Taylor (Courtney) Holdgraf, Mason Reininger, Claire Reininger, Madelyn Reininger and Tait Reininger. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Juliet and Emmeline Thorne, Savannah Holdgraf and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Reininger James Edward Reininger passed through death into eternal life on Sunday morning, August 23, 2020, at the age of 88. James was born in New Braunfels on December 24, 1931 to Erhard J. and Leonora Henk Reininger. James grew up on a farm near Barbarossa along with twelve brothers and sisters. James always had many farm chores, but always enjoyed the hard work. James graduated from Navarro High School in 1948 and again in 1949 from Seguin High School.

Following high school, dad worked with his father on the farm until May 26th, 1951 when he followed in the footsteps of all of his brothers and joined the military.

After a short time living in Corpus Christi dad worked in the insurance business for USAA and later for the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 25 great years of delivering mail to Seguin residents.

Dad also enjoyed bowling 9 pin at the Barbarossa and Zorn Bowling alleys. He and his partner Glenvood Lenz bowled together for more than 35 years.

Dad spoiled his 6 grandchildren, and he attended as many of their activities as possible.

We would like to thank all of the staff and friends at the Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center for his care the past 5 years.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The funeral will be on Saturday, August 29th, with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Gregory J. Nevlud officiating.

There will be limited seating of 100 at St. James at this time.

GRMC Limited Visitor Access

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is temporarily limiting visitor access to protect the health of its patients and staff, and in the interest of limiting exposure to respiratory illness associated with the COVID-19 virus. Exceptions include: End of life, childbirth, goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment, and designated caregiver of a pediatric patients. Additionally, no visitors will be allowed for COVID patients in the Public Health Emergency unit (PHE) or ICU during this time. The Central Entrance is open Monday through Friday 5:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the ER entrance is open 24 hours a day.
