The Voice of Seguin Today
Coming home to Texas
Herrera, a native of El Paso, believes many of his visions for Seguin come from those successes seen not only in his hometown but in neighboring cities like San Antonio. He says whether it be the transformation and renovation of the Pearl Brewery in San Antonio or the total transformation of El Paso’s neighborhoods and downtown, he believes the time has come for real change in Seguin.
Frank L. Herrera By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- A local man wants to be the next mayor for the city of Seguin. Francisco “Frank” L. Herrera is the latest candidate to toss his name in the hat for the city-wide position. Herrera’s name will appear on the ballot during the Tuesday, November 3 general election. Herrera, who moved to Seguin from San Marcos five years ago, says his time in the city has allowed him to experience and develop new visions for the city’s future. “I want to get involved with the community. One, I find that the people here are friendly and I see that the downtown, the center part, the heart of Seguin is being left behind and I want to, as the mayor, focus on our center point and then move outward as far as bringing renovation and then also bring about the economic pulse of Seguin and make it stronger,” said Herrera.
“I would be very actively involved not only with the downtown area but also in order to make the economic pulse of Seguin strong is that if we do bring in or develop new businesses or industries here, that they have to hire Seguin or if they need other towns, we are strongly suggesting that they live here in Seguin. That way, we can develop our revenue streams and I have some ideas as to what kind of manufacturing that I would like here and this is going to be very crucial, become very firm as to what my ideas are. I would like to develop some consumer goods types of manufacturing but I would also like to develop some drone technology and develop it into larger drones that can eventually transport freight,” said Herrera. Herrera, who is retired, says he brings to the campaign -- experience in planning as well as his interdisciplinary degree which includes sociology and political science. Herrera will face former Seguin City Councilwoman Donna Dodgen who has also filed for a place on the ballot. The deadline to file for the mayor’s race or for one of the four other available council seats is 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17. Individuals interested in running for one of the positions in the city of Seguin are encouraged to pick up an application packet at Seguin City Hall.
