TLU does its part to support local health professionals Campus living now available for GRMC nurses

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Working even harder and taking on longer shifts are not necessarily the top concerns for many doctors, nurses, and other employees at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center.

What is ranking high these days is the threat of taking the COVID-19 virus back home with them.

That apparently is the concern for many health care professionals as they work around the clock to treat what officials say is a growing number of hospitalized patients at GRMC. Helping to ease many of those worries for those working behind hospital walls is Texas Lutheran University.

That’s because the university has opened its campus for those who need it.

TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell says whether its not wanting to spread the virus to their family, a tiring commute or to house those who have been called in to fight the virus locally, the university is proud to be partnering up with its friends at GRMC. “It’s the nurses who work at GRMC. The space that we’ve made available is really for anyone who is working there right now including some nurses that have been brought in from the outside to help GRMC at this really challenging time so what we’ve provided was a space that anyone that GRMC routes our way in terms of their employees,” Cottrell.

As for the idea, Cottrell says opening its residential doors to nurses was sort of a middle of the road decision.

“We try to stay in contact with our good friends at GRMC all the time and certainly during this pandemic, we have been in conversation with them around all kinds of things -- how things are going there, what kind of questions we have as we anticipate reopening in the fall and several weeks ago, sort of generally the notion, issue, question came up that if they got in a situation where their front line workers might feel safer or might for whatever reason need space to stay rather than going home, would TLU be able to help with at? In the abstract, we said certainly, we would be glad to see what we could do. That, as I said, was several weeks ago. The specific came just in the last week or 10 days when they circled back to us to say ‘okay, we are at a point now where we really do need some help with housing and what might you all have available and how could that work so that was a specific request that came in a larger context of a conversation that we’d be having,” said Cottrell.

Cottrell says the temporary living space provides all the basic accommodations that one should need and are being turned over and utilized with all safety measures in place.

“They are part of our residential hall inventory but they are the apartment part of them so they’re apartments rather than just dorm rooms and what we’ve done is we’ve set aside 16 apartments for TLU to use as needed so whatever they determine they need, we have that much capacity to help them. Right now, they are not using all of that capacity but as you say, we know we are living through a time when things are changing day to day. Unfortunately, still not getting better yet and so that space will be there over the coming weeks for them to use as they need to,” said Cottrell.

Of course, like most places, TLU has remained closed to on campus instruction and to all other summer programming. With plenty of space available, Cottrell says she hopes that in the end, this will help ease some of the stresses for those who remain on the frontlines right here in Seguin.

“We are trying to stay open to any request that we get in terms of helping the community. We are trying to be in good communication with our local officials not only at the hospital but our city and county officials as well to make sure that anything we are either doing in terms of our campus or looking to do in the fall will be consistent with all the guidelines but also good for the community and so, I think what we recognize is that our campus is quieter right now than usual so when we get a request like this, we are able to help because we

are still in a very limited mode here and I think a lot of our effort has been in making sure that anything we are doing or contemplating doing, will be good for the community as a whole,” said Cottrell.

TLU says it’s committed to helping stop the spread of the virus so that we all can return to life and learning. Upon returning the residential spaces, TLU ensures that each unit will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized for all future use.

TLU’s Garrett Garza named finalist for SCAC Man of the Year

(Seguin) - Texas Lutheran graduate Garrett Garza has been named a finalist for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Man of the Year award.

intercollegiate eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2020 spring season, received an undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2020 term, and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.500 (4.000 scale).

The SCAC Man of the Year award recognizes the conference’s senior male student-athlete who has best distinguished himself throughout his collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership.

The 2020 Southern Collegiate Athletic Man of the Year will be selected and announced later this month.

Garza (Round Rock/Stony Point) was an All-American four times in his storied career. He collected two indoor track & field All-America honors, and he had All-America awards in outdoor track & field and in football.

TLU Baseball’s Riley Schaefer was the 2018-19 SCAC Man of the Year.

Member schools were permitted to submit two nominations if at least one of the nominees was a man of color or international studentathlete.

Garza was named the 2020 USTFCCCA’s South/ Southeast Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.

For the 2020 Indoor Track & Field season, Garza was ranked third nationally in the NCAA Division III indoor shot put with a toss of 17.67 meters (57 feet, 11¾ inches). He had the top shot mark in the South/Southeast Region by 8 feet, 4 inches. Garza owned five of the top-11 marks turned in this season at the NCAA Division III level.

Garza was one of the 20 shot putters to qualify for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. The championship meet was canceled (due to COVID-19) a day before competition was to begin. Garza was to contend for the national championship in the shot put on March 14. Garza and his coaches were already in WinstonSalem when the decision was made.

An All-American in the shot put in the 2019 indoor championships and an All-American and national runner-up in the shot put in the 2019 outdoor championships, Garza had a good shot at becoming TLU’s third indoor national champion (joining the 2007 women’s indoor 4x400 meter relay team and Marquis Brown, who won the 2017 indoor 400).

Garza’s appearance at the NCAA DIII Indoor Championship was to be his final collegiate contest of any kind. He already used his four years of eligibility in football and four years in outdoor track & field. He was in his final year of eligibility in indoor track & field.

A May 2020 graduate of TLU, Garza was a history major. He lettered four years in indoor track & field, four years in outdoor track & field, and four years in football. He was a team captain in all three sports.

Garza was a First Team All-American as chosen by D3football.com in 2019. A starting offensive guard, he helped TLU to an 8-2 overall record and to an 8-1 mark in the American Southwest Conference.

The Bulldogs finished second in the ASC - the best finish in school history for TLU’s time in the league.

Garza was a four-time All-SCAC performer in the shot put, and he was a three-time outdoor track & field SCAC champion in the shot put. He was a Garza’s outstanding 2019 indoor season member of TLU’s three consecutive SCAC Men’s already included titles at the Texas A&M Track & Field Team Championships.

GRMC Limited Visitor Access

The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is temporarily limiting visitor access to protect the health of its patients and staff, and in the interest of limiting exposure to respiratory illness associated with the COVID-19 virus. Exceptions include: End of life, childbirth, goodbye visit of military personnel departing for deployment, and designated caregiver of a pediatric patients. Additionally, no visitors will be allowed for COVID patients in the Public Health Emergency unit (PHE) or ICU during this time. Jon Daniel De La Garza Jon Daniel De La Garza, age 51 of Seguin passed away on June 26, 2020.

Jon De La Garza was born on January 7, 1969 in San Antonio, Texas to Cecilia (Gonzales) and Daniel C. “Danny” Delagarza.

Jon was a 1987 graduate of Seguin High School and attended Southwest Texas State University (Texas State).

He moved to Houston after that and became interested in distance biking and marathon running.

He completed six marathon runs.

Jon then became interested in karate (martial arts) and received his master’s in Tang Soo. For ten years he owned his own studio.

Along with his studio, he helped run the family business with his parents, El Ranchito Mexican Restaurant, a staple in Seguin enjoyed by many happy customers both locally and from out of town.

Jon loved and supported his beloved community. He is preceded in death by his father and his aunt “Hopie” Delagarza Merz.

Survivors include his loving mother, Cecilia (Gonzales) Delagarza; brother, Robert Andrew “Robby” Delagarza and

wife, Stephanie; nephew, Julian Daniel Delagarza; several aunts, uncles, numerous cousins, other loving family members and an entire community of friends.

Visitation will begin on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church followed by the recitation of the holy rosary at 10:30 a.m. with the mass of Christian Burial following at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gregory J. Nevlud, the Rev. Msgr. Dennis Darilek and the Rev. David P. Tonary officiating.

Glenn Ross Schneider Glenn Ross Schneider, age 72 of Seguin, passed away on June 25, 2020.

Glenn was born on February 11, 1948 in Guadalupe County to Ora Mae (Kwast) and R. E. (Edward) Schneider. Glenn lived in Seguin his entire life, where he attended Seguin schools.

As an adult he earned his living working in manufacturing, early on in welding, then in maintenance.

He worked many years for Knytex, Hexcel, and finally before his retirement in 2010 for Plytech.

Glenn inherited his love for fishing and camping from his parents.

In his younger years, along with family and friends, he camped and trot-line fished just about every local part of the Guadalupe river as well as many other rivers, creeks, and lakes nearby.

In later years he fished and shared many special times with family and friends during trips to Rockport.

Glenn’s favorite sport was football, he enjoyed every opportunity to watch the Dallas Cowboys on TV. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jeanine Kay Schlichting Schneider, his parents, his father-inlaw, Harvey Schlichting and most recently, his puppy companion Simba.

Survivors include his son, Craig R. Schneider and wife Sherry; daughter, Casey N. Robinson and wife, Shantae; grandchildren, Blake and Kandis Schneider; brother, Orlando Schneider, mother-in-law, Betty Jean Schlichting;

brother-in-law, Jeff Schlichting and wife Kim; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and many friends.

Glenn’s family would like to express deep gratitude to Advanced Home Health Care, and all of its staff throughout the past several years.

Family also wants to thank, Janie Hernandez and Sandor Trigueros for helping and developing the close trusting friendship they had with Glenn.

A walk through line visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by funeral service at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Price and the Rev. Tom Jones officiating.

Oscar was a graduate of the Seguin High School Class of 1989.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

He worked in the oil fields and will also be remembered as a longtime truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dawn Sanchez, his son, Justin Sanchez, his brother, Gus Sanchez, his uncle, Benito Sanchez, his grandparents, Angel and Rachel Vasquez, Gustavo and Angelita Sanchez.

Survivors include his children, Caleb Sanchez, Breanna Brumbelow and husband Dillon, Sara Sanchez, Joshua Sanchez and Abby Sanchez; six grandchildren; his girlfriend, Angie Hernandez; his parents, Moses and Rosemary Sanchez; brothers, Steven Sanchez and wife Lisa, Roland Sanchez and partner Samantha VanBooven, and Ruben Sanchez; sister-in-law, Amanda Sanchez; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

A celebration of Oscar’s life will be planned when more people can gather.

Reynaldo “Reybob” Solis, age 68 of Seguin, Texas passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Reynaldo was born on July 5, 1951 in Seguin, Texas to Virginia (Saldua) and Abelardo Solis.

Guadalupe Saenz Flores was born on March 26, 1926 in Seguin, Texas to Ofelia Zambrano Saenz and Fidel Saenz.

She married her loving h u s b a n d R o b e r t o Flores, Sr. in January 1945, and with him raised their 7 sons, 3 daughters, and granddaughter.

Together they built a beautiful family of 27 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, 42 great great grandchildren, and many more that they welcomed into their family along the way.

Rey was a 1969 graduate of Seguin High School and married Ester Acuna on July 6, 1969.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Valdez FF-1096.

He will be remembered as the manager of the Electric Supply Company in Seguin.

Rey enjoyed all sports with his favorite teams being the Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs and the Texas Longhorns. His most treasured times were spent with his family and friends, grandfather being his favorite role!

He is preceded in death by his parents; Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Ester Solis; daughters, Yvette Garza and husband Ricky, Brandy Solis, and Nicole Solis-Douglass; grandchildren, Ascension Rodriguez, Jordan Rodriguez, Jaden Castro, Kylie Castro, Eslin Douglass, Abigail Garza and Emma Garza; siblings, Virginia (Vickie) Ramos, Abel Solis and wife Jerry, Carmen Bueno and husband Vicente, Dolores (Lola) Copado and Guadalupe (Lupe) Robles; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

A pass by visitation in automobiles for family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2020 from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary followed by a private immediate family memorial rosary at 7p.m. with Deacon Nick Carrillo officiating.

Guadalupe Saenz Flores

Lupe was preceded in death by her husband, Roberto Flores, Sr.; her sons, Antonio, Fermin, and Robert Flores, Jr.; her daughter and son-inlaw, Maria and Valentine Arriola; her son-in-law Francisco Barrientez; her grandson John Henry Flores; her brothers Fermin and Filemon Saenz; her sister Esther DeHoyos; and her loving dog Chloe.

Lupe is survived by her children: Maggie and Johnny Gonzales, Juan and Isabel Flores, Ricardo and Eugenia Flores, Armando and Mona Flores, Oralia Barrientez, Francisco Flores, Patricia Flores and Crystal Spears; her daughter-in-law, Maggie Flores; her sister, Aurora Quintanilla; her brothers Fidel, Pete, and Marcial Saenz; her 126 grand, great and great great grandchildren; and the many others who have come to love her over the years.

Joe “DJ Jammin Joe” Ramos

While raising her family, Lupe worked multiple jobs including caring for people at Guadalupe Hospital and multiple regional nursing homes.

She also worked 17 years at Mission Valley Mills until her retirement.

Lupe was known for her showing her love through cooking and caring for others. She will be remembered for her loving kindness, her quiet strength, and her beautiful smile. She was happiest when she held her grandbabies, and loved them all equally and unconditionally as they grew older.
