Students eat free

Seguin ISD looking to do away with lunch money at local schools

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- If all goes as planned, parents in the Seguin ISD will no longer have to pack any lunch money for their elementary or middle school students. The Seguin ISD is moving forward with implementing free meals for all younger kids during the upcoming school year.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez says the district is applying for the Community Eligibility Program (CEP). CEP is a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in lowincome areas. Gutierrez says this goal of offering free meals is a tremendous step forward for the district and each of its families.

"For the first year of the program, we are looking at our seven elementary schools, our early childhood school, Ball Early Childhood and the two middle schools. Our hope is that after evaluating a year or two, that we can then qualify the high school. It would be all of those campuses -- breakfast and lunch free to all students in the school district," said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez says the Seguin ISD is a good candidate for the program and meets all the criteria for implementing the program into its schools.

"One of the requirements with this program through the Texas Department of Agriculture is that in order to meet the eligibility, you've got to meet certain requirements, with of course having high percentages of students from poverty. It's a federal option. It's not specific to just Texas. It allows high poverty schools to provide free meals to all students without having to collect applications or anything of that nature. It will be free to all," said Gutierrez.

Gutierrez says there is no debate that kids who are well fed are able to focus more and succeed in the classroom. He says by doing away with lunch money, it also puts all students on the same playing field and lessens the everyday stress for families.

Breakfast for the last few years has always been provided for free for Seguin ISD students in PreK through 5th grades. The cost for breakfast for secondary students was 30 cents for reduced or $1.70 for full-pay. During the 2019-2020 school year, lunch for elementary school students was 40 cents for reduced or $2.80 for full-pay. The cost of lunch in the secondary levels (6th grade through 12th grade) was 40 cents for reduced and $3 for full-pay.

"What this also means and I know the question is going to be 'okay, so will we still have those balances owed?' There would be no balances owed and you know, we have community members who donate for students who have balances. There will be no balances and what the great thing is there's no need to worry about an alternate lunch and I know over the years, there's been concern about trays being taken and I feel like our Child Nutrition staff at least since I've been here in the three years have done a really good job. In fact, our alternate lunch is probably the best that I've ever seen for our students but that would be a thing of the past on those campuses," said Gutierrez.

Although the district is pushing forward with the application process, Gutierrez remains optimistic that this is a done deal for the district and that school lunch money will soon be a thing of the past at least here in the Seguin ISD. "We are looking at bringing it to the board in August and I can say that the board is very excited and we've kept them informed throughout this process and they are excited about this opportunity for the school district so I truly believe that once we get to that point, it's going to be a done deal. This will certainly be a huge win for Seguin ISD," said Gutierrez.

The program was discussed during a Seguin ISD Board of Trustees workshop held Thursday. During that workshop, trustees were reportedly in consensus of offering the free school meals for pre-k, all elementary and middle school students. While they too would have liked to have seen the program extended into the high school, they believe the best decision is to first pilot the program at the lower grade levels with hopes of eventually implementing the program at Seguin High School.

Registration now underway for Mega Food Drive

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – The city of Seguin is again doing its part to make sure families don’t go hungry during these times of uncertainty. The city for the second time will be partnering up with Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and the New Braunfels Food Bank for a Mega Food Distribution event this Thursday at the Seguin Events Complex.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says this food is completely free to all those who need it, regardless of income.

"Registration is underway right now as we speak and there are two ways you can go about doing it. It is required so we want to remind people that you must register in order to participate for the distribution. It can be done quickly and easily online. We completely understand that not everyone has internet access and so for those if it is easier, we also have two phone registration lines that are open right now as well. Those phone lines are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday so we encourage people to go ahead and get registered now. We are planning to have enough food to feed 1,000 families," said Sourdellia.

serving food for 1,000 families but the food itself is being provided to last them up to two weeks.

It was in late April, when the trio first partnered up to provide food. At that time, nearly 800 families were served. Sourdellia says during that food drive, many folks still showed up without registering.

Now, while they will still take care of them without a registration, Sourdellia reminds them that by pre-registering, those individuals won’t have to wait more than they have to.

"So this is why we encourage people to go ahead and register ahead of time instead of coming on site. We will do registration on site. We are not going to turn away people if they show up and are not registered. We will have people on site helping those register who didn't but again, it slows down the process and the lines and we want to make this easy and smooth for everyone and as quick as possible because it's going to be really hot that day. Summer heat is upon us and we are going to be out there for two hours from 9 to 11. We are doing it a little bit earlier in the day. It's

not as hot for our participants and also for our volunteers who will be helping.

So, if everyone can help us out ahead a time and register ahead of time, it will make things a lot smoother and easier the day of," said Sourdellia.

The food drive will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Seguin Events Complex. Registration is available by calling 830-327-6000 or 830-401-1360.

Navarro's Lipton to play baseball at Schreiner University (Geronimo) - Navarro High School senior Riley Lipton inked a commitment to continue his baseball career at Schreiner University during a signing event at the NHS baseball field Wednesday afternoon in Geronimo.

Lipton made the 30-4A All-District First Team as a junior in 2019, the Panthers' first season under head doach Kris Cavazos.

The catcher and infielder hit Navarro's only two home runs to go with a .276 average and 11 RBIs while helping the team to an 8-5 record as a senior this spring before the UIL suspended and ultimately cancelled the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Schreiner, located in Kerrville, competes at the NCAA Division III level in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Mountaineers were 9-8-1 under eighth-year head coach Ryan Brisbin before the NCAA and SCAC cancelled the remainder of the spring sports season.

Daisy Acevedo is calling for criminal charges against the officers who were involved in her son Jamel Leach's arrest on misdemeanor arson charges. NBC News has obtained security video that shows the teen reportedly trying to start a trash fire on East Fordham Road, when he is tased by cops who jump out of an unmarked cop car. Leach's family claims he is innocent.

Man Dies After Jumping Into Hudson River (New York, NY) -- A man is dead after going into the Hudson River to grab something he dropped. Bystanders on the New York side saw the 20-year-old yelling from the frigid water late last night near West 11th Street and the West Side Highway. Three strangers jumped in to try to save him. He was eventually found and taken to a hospital in cardiac arrest, but didn't survive.

Alma Nell Patteson Brown Henry, age 89 of Seguin, formerly of San Antonio and Nixon, passed peacefully on Friday evening, June 12, 2020.

Alma Nell, or Nell as she was known, was named after her beloved aunt, Alma Allen Piland.

Nell, the youngest of four siblings, was born on March 9, 1931 in Nixon, Texas to Thelma (Allen) and Gus Patteson.

Born and raised in Nixon, she was a proud graduate of the Nixon High School Class of 1948, of which they held many reunions.

Nell lived a happy and colorful life. She attended Southwest Texas Teachers College (now Texas State University). On February 11, 1951 she married Clifton Holmes (Happy) Brown, Jr. at their Church, First United Methodist Church in Nixon.

She loved her Texas Longhorns, her Dallas Cowboys and her San Antonio Spurs!!!!!

Lake McQueeney always has and always will be a treasured memory in the family’s life.

In 2004, Nell made the conscious decision to move to the Forum Independent Living in San Antonio. There she made many friendships.

In later years she reconnected with her lifelong classmate and friend (and sharing the same birthdate), James Homer Henry, Jr. They married on October 5, 2013 and shared many special memories with new friends at the Forum in San Antonio.

Nell is preceded in death by her husband, Happy Brown, son, Clifton Holmes (Cliff) Brown, III, her parents, her siblings, Margie Patteson, Wayne Patteson (who died valiantly in World War II), and Jean Patteson Hewell, mother-in-law and fatherin-law, Florence (Williams) and C. H. Brown, Sr., sister-in-law, Jo Nelle Brown Baze and husband, Col. Wallace Baze, USA (ret.) and special cousins, Arlen
