Seguin High School salutes its seniors with virtual celebration this Sunday Families to view accomplishments in the comforts of their own home

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The celebration and tribute to the Seguin High School Class of 2020 begins this weekend.

Seguin High School is inviting the community to join it as it presents a virtual Senior Celebration Commencement Ceremony beginning at 3 p.m.

Sunday The virtual ceremony is significant in that it will take place during the same time and date of the high school's originally planned live graduation ceremony. Although a new live ceremony has been planned for early June, the virtual ceremony was moved into action when school officials simply had no idea of what was going to happen amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

High School Principal Dr. Hector Esquivel says from the very beginning, his team quickly mobilized to ensure some kind of recognition for the graduating seniors.

"At the time when we started this virtual ceremony, we were not even close to starting to plan an actual live ceremony. We were still on the very tough COVID-19 restrictions from the state and local officials. At the time, we actually thought this was going to be probably the graduation so we hired some people to come on board and produce this and we got the community involved. We got the students notices. When they came up for their cap and gown, we let them know then. Everybody knew where to go to upload their photos. At the time, I was not even thinking about the actual live graduation so we were actually thinking this might be it but we were still holding out hope that maybe we could do something in July or August. This was something we wanted to have as a school to commemorate the Class of 2020 in case something never happened after that so this is the importance of this project," said Esquivel.

Virtual commencement ceremony to recognize student accomplishments

"I've talked to some parents and what some of the parents are telling me is 'yes, they are going to have more people at their Esquivel says the creation of the one hour celebration is a house because obviously for social distancing, the live tribute to every class member. We wanted to include just about as many things in this virtual graduation as the live one. For example, you have the valedictorian, salutatorian speeches.

You have your class officer speech, senior class president.

You are going to have basically everybody's name pop through the screen with a picture or whatever they sent us. It will look pretty much like a graduation without the person being live there. We like it because we are also honoring or recognizing the accomplishments of our students as their pictures flash like NHS, National Honor Society, Top 10, associate degree recipient -- all those things that their parents or family members and friends will be able to see for a brief moment when their name flashes on the screen. They'll be able to see all the accolades so we are excited about that," said Esquivel.

Seguin High School seniors on Saturday, June 6 will also be participating in a live ceremony at Canyon High School. The ability to lock down that date and schedule that ceremony also came as a surprise for the high school.

Esquivel says because the live ceremony will have limited attendance, this Sunday's online celebration is a perfect way for seniors to celebrate with others.

"We as principals, one of our major marquee events is graduation and it's also a special moment where you see kids that have been with us for four years, you see them mature.

You see them just happy, excited to be taking on the world but more importantly, it's about really not taking away a tradition that every child should have and we are glad that we are able to do this as we've done with 125 other graduations that this high school has had. So, it's very important that we continue that because that kid will never have another senior year, another graduation. So, it's just really important. I can't describe it in words but I would hate for any person in the Class of 2020 say 'I never had a graduation.' That wouldn't sound really good to me so I'm glad that this is happening," said Esquivel.

Esquivel says he applauds his entire high school team for putting in the work and helping to make this Sunday happen. He especially thanks those in Mat Cast for also contributing their talents. He says the celebration will definitely be one for the books and promises the kids some special surprises at the end.

"We are excited about Sunday. I think that people are going to be pleasantly surprised. The people that worked on this project did an amazing job and really put their whole heart into making the kids the centerpiece of this there at their house if that's what the family wanted to do. whole process so that's what I'm really excited about. Seguin ISD names Teachers of the Year for 2019-2020

Katie Chabot, of Ball Early Childhood Center, was named as this year's Seguin ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year. Tommie Jackson, of A.J. Briesemeister Middle School, was also recognized earning the title of Seguin ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Jackson says he is honored for the title and believes Seguin is where he was meant to be.

Unlike other years, the competition for the top teacher didn't stop amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead the selection committee utilized technology and other innovative resources to narrow its selection down to these two top teachers. The Bulldogs trailed 28-24 entering the fourth quarter before rallying to win the game.

Marion converted fourth-andnine from the Randolph 41yard line to keep the game clinching drive going when Hutch Rabenaldt hauled in a 15-yard strike from Goodwin. Goodwin scampered in from five yards out two plays later to generate the final margin with 2:30 to play.

The Marion defense turned Randolph over on downs to clinch the outcome.

Goodwin finished 12-20 for 169 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He also led Marion in rushing with 51 yards and the late score on 10 carries. Devora coralled three receptions, all touchdowns, for a total of 60 yards. Rabenaldt totaled 54 receiving yards on four catches.

"I think they finally just settled in," Miller said of his team's resilience after the early deficit. "Randolph's a tough place to play. It's a grass field, which our guys aren't used to a whole lot because they don't see it. But I think just getting settled in, because on film, obviously Randolph is an extremely good football team, so I think once our guys, once they kind of settled in, 'okay we can play with them', they finally turned it on a little bit and ended up competing. We scored three scores right off the bat after being down 14-0, and went into halftime with a little momentum going."

Marion went on to finish 8-4, with the season ending in a secondround playoff loss to Vanderbilt-Industrial.

The fourth installment of the Big Game Rewind series will feature the Lifegate six-man football team next week.

“hope” in English. They did this “in hope” she would survive. Esperanza was born in San Antonio,TX on June 26 1930. Anacleto’s occupation took the family from Texas to Mexico and back to Texas but somewhere in there she met her future husband, Jesus Vasquez.

She married “Chuy” and in time, had four children. When Jesus was killed in an auto accident, Hope became a widow with four children under the age of 10. She had always had a strong faith, but now it was time to employ her name with full force. Hope began a very very hard life of being a widow with no job, a one room house next to her father-in-law, and an education that ended in 3rd grade with which to raise four children. But she was not alone. She had her husband’s cousins nearby, her sister Velia in San Antonio and brother Rodolfo in Seguin. She thanks all of them for helping her raise her kids. She never has taken credit for herself but gave the glory to God for sending her help.

Always strong in faith, Hope was active at her church, Virgen de Guadalupe Catholic Church.

When the previous two children of Joaquina and Anacleto Ortiz died in infancy, the two decided that if the next child lived, and was a girl, they would name her Esperanza, which means

(Washington, DC) -- Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb thinks it's unlikely there'll be a COVID-19 vaccine available for the masses this year. Dr. Gottlieb told CNBCthe nation will have to go through another cycle of virus outbreaks in the fall. He said a vaccine might be available on a limited basis, and then if one city has a large-scale outbreak. Dr. Gottlieb predicted that by the end of the year, drug companies should be able to produce the tens of millions of vaccines needed and begin vaccinating people in 2021. He said the challenge with this virus is that it appears at least one out of five people who contract it are asymptomatic.
