Residents invited to learn more about Rudeloff Road project

Construction project to get underway this May

(Seguin) -- If you live around or utilize Rudeloff Road as part of your commute, then you might want to learn more about its upcoming improvement project during tonight's public meeting.

The city of Seguin is inviting community members to attend today's public meeting regarding the upcoming Rudeloff Road Phase I Improvement Project. The project is slated to kick-off in May 2024.

At the come-and-go meeting, city officials says the public can learn more about the project details and timelines. They say they will also be able to meet the project contractor. City staff members will also be on hand to answer any questions that residents have about the project.

The meeting is being held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the City of Seguin Utilities Operation Center. The center is located at 3027 N. Austin Street.

Officers seize drugs, shoots dog during drug investigation

(Seguin) -- A local officer was allegedly forced to shoot and kill a dog that rushed toward him and other officers during a drug arrest at a local home on Thursday.

John Flores, Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force Lt., says the incident involving suspects, Michelle Galindo, 45 and Vince Ray Riojas, 29, first began during an attempted traffic stop. He says a tip called into the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers initially led agents to follow the pair of suspected drug dealers.

The search warrant was executed after Vince Riojas, driver) and Michelle Galindo (passenger) evaded in a vehicle from a Seguin PD C.A.S.E. Unit officer attempting to stop them. Riojas and Galindo fled back to the residence in the 200 block of West Ireland Street. GCNTF personnel were on scene to execute the search warrant when Galindo and Riojas arrived back.

Family honors local woman with blood drive

Community encouraged to roll up their sleeves in support

(Seguin) -- A local family is encouraging Seguin to roll up its sleeve in hopes of giving the gift of life to one of their own.

A blood drive, in honor of Erica Saucedo, is being held this Wednesday from 1 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Mosheim Mansion in downtown Seguin.

Saucedo, the operations manager of the Mosheim Mansion, is currently battling leukemia and was recently released from the hospital after nearly six weeks of treatment at MD Anderson in Houston.

Saucedo's Aunt Mary Lou Castillo says although, she is no longer hospitalized, Saucedo has moved into housing near the hospital for continued treatment and is still requiring several blood and platelet transfusions.

Castillo says it was soon after the Mosheim Mansion officially opened its doors on North Austin, that the family was faced with this new challenge. Castillo says Erica has worked alongside her mother Patricia Saucedo in renovating the historic home and transforming it into a new event venue for the community.

"Erica is still involved in any inquiries for the Mosheim Mansion and she is still promoting the mansion

and we are assisting her in anyway we can and I asked my sister a couple of weeks ago, what can we do to support Erica and Patty said, 'how about a blood drive?' And so myself and the other sisters jumped on it and want to do this in honor of Erica," said Castillo.

Castillo says although she is battling her own fight, Erica still desires to educate people about donating blood to help save all lives.

"This is Erica's second bout with cancer. The first time it was breast and now Leukemia. She has really taken an active role in wanting to inform the public about the importance of blood donation and being a part of the bone marrow registry. So, despite the fight that she is currently experiencing for her life, she is wanting to educate people about the importance of blood donation and joining the bone marrow registry," said Castillo.

Those wishing to donate blood are encouraged to reserve a time by visiting SouthTexasBlood.org. Castillo is asking that people not be discouraged if there appears to be no more available times and to stop by the Mansion anyway. All donors will receive a chance to win a HEB gift card. The Mosheim Mansion is located at 409 N. Austin St.

Local HVAC company's anniversary celebration ends with new unit for Seguin woman

(Seguin) -- A 25-year milestone is resulting in the free replacement of a 40-year old AC and heating unit for a deserving local resident.

Diamond Air AC and Heating Services celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting its Ugliest AC contest.

People were asked to submit their old, ugly and outdated unit as part of the contest, with the winner receiving a brand new unit.

Diamond Air owners Ben and Krista Moreno made the announcement of the winner during a special anniversary celebration on Friday.

"The winner of our contest is Ms. Elizabeth Alcoser. Her air conditioner is over 40 years old. She is retired and on a fixed-income and in 2021 when we had our great snow storm, she received a lot of damage to her home. Her air conditioning and heating unit, a lot of busted water lines ruined a lot of her floors. She was able to get a Federal Disaster

Funds Grants fund but the damage was too much to be able to cover the air conditioner. She has been living the last two years without heat or A/C in the home," said Moreno.

Winner Elizabeth Alcoser will no longer have to worry about the scorching heat of summer or our often surprisingly cold winters. She will now

The Moreno’s said they wanted to host the contest as a way to express their gratitude to their loyal customers over the last quarter century.

In addition to the big prize, their anniversary celebration also included a number of daily prizes handed out via Diamond Air's Facebook page.

As Officer’s initiated efforts to detain Galindo and Riojas, they were encountered by an aggressive Pit Bull Terrier that charged at them. One of the officers fired their service weapon killing the canine,” stated Flores.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers found 7.7 grams of cocaine and 100.7 grams of methamphetamine. Both face charges of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. Riojas faces an additional charge of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle. Both remain behind bars on a $50,000 bond each.

TLU Softball Splits Doubleheader with Trinity on Senior Day

SEGUIN, Texas -- The No. 11 Texas Lutheran softball team split their Sunday doubleheader with Trinity - shutting the Tigers out 3-0 in the first game to take the series before dropping the series finale 5-4 at Ed Kruse Stadium.

TLU senior right-hander Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) spun a gem in Sunday’s first game, tossing a complete game, six-hit shutout. She walked just one while throwing 81 of her 121 pitches for strikes (66.9%) to improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the fourth courtesy of a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from senior Reagan Jones (Pearland/Friendswood) that plated senior Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/ Cedar Park) and an RBI groundout from Kourtney Bellinger (Houston/Grand Oaks) that scored senior Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock). One inning later, Mia Landry (Cypress/Bridgeland) launched an RBI double to provide an extra insurance run.

Ouellette wouldn’t need any more help, shutting down the Trinity lineup the rest of the way as the senior cruised to her 17th career shutout.

The Bulldogs would fall to the Tigers 5-4 in the series finale on Sunday.

Texas Lutheran (25-3, 16-2 SCAC) was out-hit for just the fifth time this season, 11-8. The Bulldogs drew seven walks but batted just 4-for-20 (.200) with runners on base, stranding 13.

Kylee Jack (Richwood/Brazoswood) went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Bulldogs lineup. Mia Landry would draw three walks in the day’s second game.

Trinity opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, their first runs of the series. An RBI groundout from Jack would cut the Tigers lead in half in the bottom of the inning.

The Bulldogs would load the bases in the third setting up an RBI walk for Reagan Hillis before Kourtney Bellinger would tap a one-out RBI single to center field to give the Bulldogs the lead. Reagan Jones would walk in the final run of the inning as TLU took a 4-2 lead.

The Tigers struck back with two runs in the fourth, tying the game up 4-4. Trinity would proceed to score the game-winning run via a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Following Sunday’s games, TLU honored its seven seniors: Madi Johnson, Skylar Shanahan (Magnolia/Magnolia), Hillis, Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls),

Tatum Seith (Hewitt/Midway), Reagan Jones, and Jayna Reid (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) in a postgame ceremony celebrating their contributions to the program that have seen the seniors be NCAA national runnerups in 2021, NCAA Tournament third place finishers in 2022.

TLU maintains a one-game lead in the SCAC standings entering the final week of the regular season.

Emmett Giffen Donegan, age 95 of Seguin, died peacefully in his sleep on April 15, 2024, at the PAM Specialty Rehabilitation Center of New Braunfels. Emmett was born on July 2, 1928, in Seguin, Texas to Hettie Willie (Giffen) and Charles Henry Donegan, Sr.

Emmett is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marjorie Donegan Luce, and husband A. E. “Buck”; brothers, Charles Henry Donegan, Jr. and wife Marjorie, John Donegan and wife Idalen, Benton Donegan, brother-in-law, Raleigh Custer, former spouse and mother of his sons, Ann Nelson Donegan.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Geraldine “Geri” Donegan; sons, Nelson Donegan, Craig Donegan, and wife Pat, and Scott Donegan; his beloved grandsons, Sherman Donegan and wife Jennifer, and Richard Donegan and wife Alex; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Madeleine, Brigitte, and Blakely Donegan; step-children, Brian Thomas and Kim Thomas; sister, Patricia Custer; sister-inlaw, Mary Louise Donegan; numerous nieces and nephews, other loving family members and a host of friends.

Ignacio Alvarez Jr., age 81 of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 29, 2024. Ignacio was born on January 17, 1943 in Seguin, to Andrea and Ignacio Alvarez Sr.

A man of strong work ethic, Ignacio owned and operated a business and mastered several trades. After the passing of his wife, Ignacio dedicated much time helping care for his mother and later on his youngest brother.

Preceding him in death, wife Yolanda Alvarez, parents Andrea and Ignacio Alvarez Sr, brothers Juan and Marcelino Alvarez, sisters Locadia Ramos and Rosa Arce.

He is survived by daughter Yolanda Alvarez, sisters Petra Noriega and Francisca Sandoval.

We are so thankful to the Lord for the life of our precious loved one, Ignacio. Thank you, “Tio” for the precious memories. We will miss you dearly. A private memorial service is planned for a later date.

Cipriano “Zip” D. Rojas Sr., known for his kindness, warmth, and dedication to his family, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones in Seguin, Texas, on April 8, 2024, at the age of 64. He was born on August 26, 1959, in Seguin.

“Zip” took immense pride in his career as a truck driver, spanning over 30 years. It was a source of great accomplishment for him, reflecting his strong work ethic and commitment.

Beyond his professional life, Zip’s true joy came from spending time with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed family gatherings and BBQs where he could showcase his skills in smoking briskets. Tending to his yard was another passion of his, as he found pride in making it look beautiful. His love for music was evident to all who knew him. Zip found immense pleasure in jamming out to tunes and attending concerts, especially country music shows. These moments brought him immense happiness and created cherished memories. However, above all else, Zip’s proudest accomplishments were his grandchildren. He showered them with love that knew no bounds and their presence brought him immeasurable joy that words could not capture. In the hearts of those who mourn his passing are the memories of a man who was always willing to help others, kindhearted by nature, and forever welcoming with a warm smile.

Cipriano is survived by his children: Sulema Rojas Cantu (Isaias Cantu), Francisca Rojas (Juventino Rojas Gutierrez), Cipriano Rojas Jr. (Audrey Lynn Rojas), Nicolasa Rojas Garcia, Martin Rojas, Eduardo Reyes, and Daniel Rojas; as well as 19 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his fiancé Griselda Reyes; siblings Guillermo Rojas Sr., Angelita Rojas, Julia Rojas Valdez; brother-in-law Lucio A. Sanchez as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In death, Cipriano rejoins his parents Apolonio Flores Rojas Sr. and Francisca Diaz Correa; his brother Apolonio Diaz Rojas Jr.; sisters Juanita Rojas Niño Maria Rojas Rodriguez; Ramona Ann Sanchez - leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace knowing he was truly loved and admired by many.

Grimm, age 96 of Seguin, passed away on April 14, 2024. Mavis was born on November 6, 1927, in Guadalupe County, Texas to Paul and Valeska (Erxleben) Strempel. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 70 years, Fritz; her parents; and sisters, Shirley Jahns, and Glendora Ewald and her husband Fred.

She is survived by son Larry Grimm and wife Kathy; grandchildren, Michael Grimm and wife Morgan, and Megan Houtchens and husband Nick; four great-granddaughters, Olivia and Caroline Grimm, and Callie and Ava Houtchens; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

CA) -- A salmonella outbreak is prompting Trader Joe’s to pull its fresh basil from shelves in 29 states. The California-based company says “Infinite Herbs” basil has made a dozen people sick and was sold between February 1st and April 6th Along with Washington D.C., the 29 states where the contaminated herbs were distributed include: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The CDC tells consumers to throw it away or return it to Trader Joe’s.

Report Finds Certain Fruits And Vegetables Have Unhealthy Pesticide Dose (Undated)

-- A new consumer report finds that some fruits and vegetables have an unhealthy amount of pesticides in high doses. It is recommended you eat watermelon, green beans, bell peppers, blueberries, imported celery, imported collard greens, and potatoes in moderation. Experts warn that those most at risk are children and women who are pregnant. Regardless though, it is still recommended that you eat fruits and vegetables regularly.

8-Year-Old Becomes First In NYS For Gene Therapy (Queens,

NY) -- A Queens boy has a chance at a better life by becoming the first patient in New York to undergo a FDA-approved gene therapy for a rare inherited blood disorder. Stem cells are taken from the patient and sent to a lab where a gene is added to produce normal adult hemoglobin. The cells are then infused back into the patient. Eight-year old Yusef Ahmed had the procedure at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens where he had been going for blood transfusions every month since he was two months old. Doctors say this gene therapy is a game changer and could possibly be used to treat other blood disorders like sickle cell anemia.

Registration is now open for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age. Salvation Army Office

The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Volunteers Needed

The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18. La Trinidad Blessing Box - Food Pantry

The La Trinidad United Methodist Church invites you to “Take what you need, Bring what you can, and above all be Blessed!” by its Blessing Box Food Pantry located at the corner of the church at 306 E. Gonzales St. in Seguin. The Blessing Box is filled with items to help those in need.
