City needs public's help to ensure City of Seguin announces first positive COVID-19 case parks remain open Guadalupe County virus cases hit double digits By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is pleading for the community to practice social distancing and adhere to the Texas Governor and the Mayor Don Keil's order to limit social gatherings of 10 people or less when visiting the city's parks. “We can't understate the severity of COVID-19. People of all ages, regardless if they are healthy or have underlying medical conditions, are becoming ill,” said Jennifer Sourdellia, the city's public information officer. “If you are sick, please stay at home, rather than venture out to our parks. We must have our residents' help during this critical time to slow the spread in our community.” Sourdellia says if social distancing is not taken seriously, the city will be left with no alternative but to close the parks entirely. The City’s parks and trails are open, but citizens are expected to again practice social distancing and have no more than 10 people in a group. Restrooms, ball fields,

playgrounds, and basketball courts at all park facilities are closed until further notice, including the splash pad at Park West. Also all city parks will be closed Easter weekend April 10-12.

The council last week also approved an emergency ordinance that placed further restrictions on some businesses and places where people might gather. The emergency ordinance requires that all bars, restaurant dining rooms, gyms, movie theatres, bowling alleys, nail and hair salons, tattoo parlors, game rooms and other indoor and outdoor amusement facilities must close to the public immediately. According to city leaders, the emergency ordinance does have some teeth, and people who violate the ordinance could face some large fines.The city is currently not under a shelter in place ordinance. Mayor Keil says they want citizens to continue to practice their own protective measures by staying home when they can, to observe proper social distancing wherever they go, and to wash their hands frequently.

(Guadalupe County) — As of today, Guadalupe County is reporting 13 positive cases of COVID-19, and one of the positive test results is that of a resident who lives in Seguin. The patient is selfquarantined at home and is being monitored by the Texas Department of Health Services (TDHS). At this time, officials this is all the information that has been given to them, but will share more information as it becomes available from TDHS. The positive test result was confirmed on Sunday to both the Guadalupe County Office of Emergency Management and the City of Seguin Emergency Management Coordinator by the Texas Department of Health Services.

As testing becomes more available, the City of Seguin and Guadalupe County expects to see an increase in positive tests throughout the city and county. Officials say the city and county remain committed to monitoring the COVID-19 situation actively and will make decisions that keep the citizens of Seguin and Guadalupe County safe. To help prevent the spread of COVID19, residents are urged to follow these guidelines: • Continue to practice social distancing by keeping six (6) feet apart and avoiding gathering of more than ten (10) people • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue,

then wash your hands. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Minimizing exposure is especially important for people who are 65 or older or who have an underlying health condition like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer. People in those groups have a higher risk of developing severe disease if they do get COVID-19, and the safest thing for them during an outbreak will be to stay home as much as possible and minimize close contact with other people. To get ready, they should talk to their doctor about getting additional prescription medications and have enough household items and groceries on hand to stay home as needed. The positive test result was confirmed on Sunday to both the Guadalupe County Office of Emergency Management and the City of Seguin Emergency Management Coordinator by the Texas Department of Health Services. All three patients are at home and have been self-quarantined since being tested.

Seguin ISD meal program changes effective today By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- In an effort to efficiently provide free student meals and minimize the potential for exposure, the Seguin ISD is announcing a few changes to its campus and bus delivery Grab & Go meal program.

Beginning today, March 30, breakfast will be served with lunch each day during the lunch meal service from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. With this change, district officials say they will be removing the breakfast service time of 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. They will instead be serving two meals (one breakfast one lunch) during its lunch meal service from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. District officials say this

latest change is an extra effort to help reduce parent, student and staff risk of exposure by interacting once per day. Also beginning Friday, April 3, the Seguin ISD will serve meals for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the district's Friday lunch meal service. District officials say this change will essentially remove the Saturday meal service. It will also remove the Saturday meal service. Officials say they provide six meals on Fridays during lunch meal service (three breakfasts and three lunches) to cover student meals for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Campus locations are Ball Early Childhood Center, Jefferson, Koennecke, McQueeney, Patlan and Rodriguez elementaries, plus Seguin High School. Seguin ISD officials say the campus and bus delivery Grab & Go meal locations will not change.

Those efforts will continue as scheduled. A look at the area's spring sports teams before the UIL coronavirus suspension:Navarro softball (Geronimo) - With the University Interschollastic League (UIL) suspending the spring schedules of the state's high school athletic programs until at least May 4 due to the , we take a look back at the interrupted seasons for some of the teams in the Seguin area and Guadalupe County. The third instalment in the series focuses on the Navarro High School softball team. The Panthers came into the season with high hopes after the deepest playoff run in school history last year.

Navarro softball before UIL coronavirus suspension runs. Wegman led the lineup with eight doubles, while Sturm, Howard, and Stevens each had seven. Kassidy Bishop (.455), Stevens (.444), Tabares (.429), Tatum Harborth (.375), Berklee Andrews (.368), and Taetem Fox (.308) were regulars batting better than .300 as well. Wegman was the workhorse of the pitching staff with a teamhigh 54-1/3 innings of work. Over the course of those frames, she struck out 44 batters and compiled a 4.67 ERA.

As a team, the Panthers swiped 49 bases in 53 attempts over the first 15 ballgames.

Navarro had games remaining against La Vernia and Cuero on the first round of the district schedule and a non-district matchup with San AntonioAntonian Prep before the second half of the 30-4A slate began.

In addition to Sturm, Melina Tabares was stringing together a strong season in that department, stealing nine bases without being caught.

La Vernia appeared to be the Panthers' most formidable challenger for the district title. The Bears were 15-2-1 overall, 3-0 in district play.

Howard was the RBI leader with 20 driven in. She and Sydni Stevens each hit three home runs, and Ortiz launched the ball out of the park twice.

Darrell Harborth is Navarro's head coach in girls basketball and softball, so his assistant Morgan Cavazos assumed the softball reins while the two seasons overlapped. Navarro's overall record was 86-1 when the UIL pulled the plug on spring activities, but the Panthers were gaining momentum with a five-game winning streak and a 4-0 start to the District 30-4A schedule.

The offense was productive up and down the lineup, averaging 7.2 runs per game while posting a team batting average of .417, 39 doubles, five triples, and nine home runs. Four regulars were hitting better than .500. That list includes Lalyn Sturm (.586), Haleigh Ortiz (.560), Samantha Wegman (.538), and Sarah Howard (.512). Sturm owned a team-best .624 on-base percentage and led an aggressive base-running team with 11 stolen bases.

Vital Statistics Catherine Lydia Naumann Covey

Catherine married Buford Maul in 1966. Not long after their marriage Buford was killed in car accident. This left Catherine with three stepchildren to raise, two teenage girls and a young son. As always, she did this with great care, love, and patience.

In 1981, she married Bill Covey. She became stepmom to Bill’s adult children and then “Grandma Cathy” to their children, grandchildren, and a large extended family. They soon settled in the Copperas Cove area where they bought land and built a house. Catherine loved living in the country, raising animals, gardening, cooking, and entertaining family and friends. Catherine Lydia Naumann Covey, aged 90, died on March 20, 2020, in Seguin, Texas. A kind, thoughtful, and loving woman, Catherine touched the lives of many people, both professionally and personally. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Catherine was truly everyone’s favorite friend and relative.

When Bill passed away in 2004, Catherine remained in their home, caring for the property, and still working in Killeen. About 5 years later, her beloved brother Louis, who lived in Dallas, became quite ill, and she became his companion and caretaker until his death in 2016. During this time, they lived in Born on September 25, 1929, Catherine New Braunfels and San Antonio, and was a descendant of a German immigrant finally returned to live in their hometown family who settled in the Seguin area in of Seguin. 1848. George Harold Falk, 84, peacefully passed away on March 27, 2020, at his home in New Braunfels, Texas. George was born on April 18, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas to Faye and Carl Falk Sr. George was the beloved husband and best friend to his wife of 47 years, Dulane Falk (Bettge). Devoted father of George Falk Jr. (wife, Lesa), Erin Falk Ackerman (husband, Howard), Leigh Falk, and Laurie Falk. Loving grandfather of Meghan Ackerman, Natalie Ackerman and Katy Murch. George is survived by his brother, Carl Falk Jr. (wife, Patricia) of Corpus Christi, Texas. George graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas and the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in geology.
