Elections administrator explains Primary Election process

(Guadalupe County) – Polling locations will be in action this Tuesday as voters head out to cast their ballots during the March 5th Joint Primary Election.

Setting the stage of how this election works and how it will be key to the November General Election is Lisa Hayes, Guadalupe County elections administrator.

Hayes says the idea of a Primary Election is for voters to choose their top candidate for one of the elected offices within the Democratic and Republican parties.

“Because this is a Primary Election, voters are going to have to select either a Democratic or

Republican ballot if they want to vote in this election. This is different than our November Election when all of the different parties are on one ballot. This is the election where the voters are exercising their voice to tell the parties which candidate they would like to see on the November ballot for each party. Voters will need to go in prepared to choose either a Republican ballot or a Democratic ballot,” said Hayes. The candidate who wins the majority or more than half of the votes in a race will go on to face candidates from other parties in the November General Election.

Early voters turnout, rise in registered voters reported

(Seguin) -- It appears when this is all said and done, the Guadalupe County Elections Office might just have some record numbers to report.

That’s simply based on the voter turnout during the past two weeks of early voting.

Lisa Hayes, the Guadalupe County elections administrator, describes the early voting turnout

as “great” and says their “turnout percentage is in line with the last Presidential Primary.”

“We’ve had a very good turnout for early voting. We are tracking actually pretty much right on with what we saw in the primary of 2020. We are seeing more people but the percentage of voters turning out is about the same. We’ve got more

registered voters now than we had in 2020 but percentage wise, we are right on track. I think we added over 500 registered voters between February 1 and March 1 so the voters are moving into the county and registering to vote. There is definitely a lot of interest in being part of Guadalupe County which I understand... Voters, pg. 3

Seguin ISD approves the addition of new puberty education curriculum

(Seguin) -- There will now be more resources for Seguin ISD families with an addition to the district’s sexual and reproductive sexuality health curriculum.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees recently unanimously approved the Proctor and Gamble Puberty Education video series “Always Changing.” The instructional material will be available this spring for use in the fifth grade.

school board, following a recommendation by the Seguin ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), approved the adoption of a sixth-grade program called Living Well Aware as well as a ninth-grade curriculum titled SHARE.

to be included in this instructional opportunity.

“The program that we would use is something that is created by the Proctor and Gamble Company so it’s a video series that live in public domain. We would house them in our district website so that everyone can see them. We house them on the SHAC place but that would also be the place where teachers and that’s why (Lead Nurse)

Kara (Hall) is here tonight. Her team would take the lead on the instruction piece of this as the nurses to provide that video. There’s a boy’s video and a girl’s video,” said Silvius.

Also, on hand at the meeting was Seguin ISD Lead Nurse Kara Hall. Hall says these videos help initiate some very important conversations between parents/adults and students.

If no candidate gets a majority of voters in a race, then the top two-vote getters will head to a May 28 primary runoff election. Hayes says locally, the only contested races this March are on the Republican ballot. Hayes says a person’s ballot in March, however, does not determine that person’s party affiliation in any way. She says this is often a question that is raised during the March Primary.

“So, the answer to that is in November, there are no party ballots in that all of the parties will be on one ballot so a voter can vote whichever party Democratic or Republican now in the Primary and in November, their ballots are all going to have all the parties on them. So, this does not impact the quote unquote kind of ballot they get in November because all of the parties are represented on November’s ballot. So, this is an opportunity for the voters to help make this election for their party. Additionally, if there’s a Primary runoff, the voters cannot change parties in between. So, if they vote in one party’s primary and there is a runoff from the primary, then they would need to vote in the same party runoff if they are going to vote. Now, if they voted in neither of the primaries for either party, they could vote in either of the runoffs if there are runoffs for both parties. So, that could be a little confusing also for the voters,” said Hayes.

In Guadalupe County, there are a few contested races seeking the GOP nomination. Among those are the position of Guadalupe County Sheriff and Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1. There are no contested Democratic races for these positions. This means that if voters would like to vote for sheriff or want a say in Pct. 1, then they will have to ask for a Republican ballot when they arrive at their polling site.

it’s a great place to live but that does bring some challenges too because we do have a lot of people that are moving here from other states and other counties,” said Hayes.

As Hayes mentioned, the growth of 500 additional registered voters in just one month, signifies a reflection of Guadalupe County’s fast paced growth.

“February 1 of 2024, so this February, we had 123,857 registered voters. Feb 1 of 2023, we had 117,790 registered voters. That’s quite a few new registered voters in our county,” said Hayes.

To ensure a smooth voting experience, it is recommended that voters arrive early. They may confirm their registration status by calling the elections office at (830) 3036363. Voters are also encouraged to visit the Guadalupe County’s election page at https://www.co.guadalupe.tx.us/elections.

It’s important to note that whoever garners the most votes during Tuesday’s Primary for Sheriff will essentially assume the new position in January 2025. That’s because there is no Democratic challenger for that position.

The winner of the Commissioners Court race, however, will advance to the November election where they will face both a Democratic and Libertarian candidate.

A total of 36 Vote Centers or polling locations will be open throughout Guadalupe County on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thanks to Vote Centers, Guadlaupe County residents are no longer restricted to specific polling sites and can vote in any one of the 36 locations. Simply put by officials, if they see a “Vote Here” sign outside the building, then they can vote in that Guadalupe County polling location.

A list of voting centers is available on the Guadalupe County Elections Office webpage or at SeguinToday.com. Voters are reminded that Election Day voting will not take place at the main Elections Office in Seguin.

A sample ballot can be accessed on the Elections Office website. Hayes says the sample ballots allow voters to preview their precinct’s ballot before visiting the polls.

“We have sample ballots on our website. We have sample ballots available in our offices so if voters want to come pick up a sample ballot so they can study the sample ballot ahead of time and that way they know going into the polls who they want to vote for or which party ballot they want, they are welcome to do that. They can even mark the sample ballot and take it with them and use it as a voting guide. Those things are all okay and we even encourage that,” said Hayes.

The voter guide can also assist them as they electronically cast their ballot. The paper sample ballots can be found at www.co.guadalupe.tx.us/elections.

“As far as these videos go -- just so you know -- they are shown separately. Boys are usually taken with males, usually the gym teacher, and then females are taken with the nurse and any other female teacher willing to be in the room and help answer questions,” said Hall.

Trustee Josh Bright, who has children in the district, says he was very pleased with the videos and the information they provided. Bright was also appreciative to those SHAC members who dedicate their time to each child’s well-being.

“I also have a son who will be going through the video next year. I thought they were excellent

videos and they were very easy to talk through and I appreciate the SHAC going out and finding these videos and letting us do,” said Bright.

Again, if fifth grade parents want their kids to watch the video at school, then they will have to sign an online waiver.

The district is hoping to roll out the program sometime this spring.

TLU Sweeps Doubleheader to Win Castleton Series

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran baseball swept a doubleheader against Vermont State Castleton with a 12-4 win in seven innings and a 17-13 win on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field to win the series after dropping Friday night’s game to the Spartans.

The Bulldogs (7-6) tagged Spartan pitching for 14 hits in game one, including a double, a program record three triples, and two homers. Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and two runs scored, while Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

Brendan Beard (Coldspring/ Coldspring-Oakhurst) pitched a complete game and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He struck out eight batters and picked up his third win of the season.

Already leading 5-2, the Bulldogs put together a seven run bottom of the sixth inning to blow the game open. The hit parade started with a triple from Goudeau before Vasquez drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single. After a walk to Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/ Stony Point), Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) launched a three-run homer to make the score 9-2. Castleton went to the bullpen and the Bulldogs kept hitting. After a triple from Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial),

Chase Bourgeois (League City/ Clear Falls) hit an RBI single, R.J. Carrillo (Alice/Alice) hit an RBI single, and Cole Cravens (Round Rock/Round Rock) capped off the scoring by scoring on a wild pitch.

Texas Lutheran scored the first runs of the game in the second courtesy of a three-run homer from Mason Goudeau. An RBI double from Vasquez and an RBI triple from Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) in the fourth put five runs on the board for the Bulldogs before the explosive sixth inning.

In game two, Texas Lutheran blasted three home runs and had 12 total hits. Adam Peavy finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs, and four runs scored, while Aric Vasquez was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBis and two runs scored and Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs

and a run scored.

JT Taylor (Conroe/Fort Bend Christian) started and pitched five innings with five strikeouts and two runs allowed. Taylor picked up his third win of the season and is now 3-1 on the season.

Vermont State Castleton took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs responded with solo home runs from Peavy and Garrett Helpenstill (Pearland/ Lutheran South) in the first two of 12 unanswered runs over the four innings to take a 12-2 lead.

Texas Lutheran took advantage of four Spartans errors to cross five runs in the third inning with the only RBIs coming on a bases loaded walk to Peavy and a sacrifice fly by Chase Bourgeois.

gave the Bulldogs a commanding 12-2 lead after five innings.

After shrinking the Bulldogs lead to 12-3 in the sixth, the Spartans exploded for an eight run seventh inning to cut the TLU lead to 12-11.

Texas Lutheran responded with five runs in the eighth inning to retake control of Saturday evening’s contest. After loading the bases to start the inning, Adam Peavy scored following a Castleton throwing error after attempting to turn a double play. A two-out, two-RBI double from Hayden Kesselring sparked a twoout rally from the Bulldogs before Aric Vasquez would hit a two-run home run that would serve as the dagger Saturday evening.

Texas Lutheran will return to Katt-Isbel Field on Sunday, March 3, as they continue their 13-game home stand by hosting DeSales University in non-conference action. With perfect grammar and a hint of aristocracy, Nancy was seldom without comment and left no one wondering of her opinion. With far-ranging interests from history to travel, there was no need for Google when Nancy was in the room. Although occasionally wrong, she was never in doubt.

From talking with Nancy, one might have deduced she was tutored in Buckingham Palace; however, she was born in the small town of Bogata in northeast Texas on July 8th, 1942, to Jack and Commie Rhoads. She attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and, after graduating, moved to Seguin with her parents. In 1963, she met her future husband, Henry, while spending time at the Lake Breeze Ski Lodge on Lake McQueeney. Henry and Nancy were wed on August 1st, 1964.

Throughout her years in Seguin, Nancy was active in many groups, clubs and organizations. Although she would be ashamed to admit it now, in the 1960’s, she and Henry were heavily involved in the local democratic party, leading to a lifetime of interest in politics and government. She was a longtime member and occasional president of the Seguin Shakespeare Club, where she could let her fantasies of royal heritage blossom. She was also active with the Seguin Tejas Club, several local book clubs, the Crystal Clear Water board and the Vestry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Nancy served as president of the Seguin ISD School Board where her often colorful commentary earned her many friends and an occasional foe.

Henry and Nancy loved to travel. Throughout their 38-year marriage, they

traveled the continental US in Henry’s different airplanes and had wonderful adventures. They also traveled internationally, spending time in England and Germany over several visits. In the late 1990’s, they bought a ranch in Marfa, Texas where they had great fun building a ranch house and living like Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor.

Forever a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and her TCU Horned Frogs, she loved watching football, but also enjoyed playing tennis with her friends. In the 1980’s, she spent many summer days at Max Starcke Park playing doubles tennis or by the pool at the Ski Lodge with her forever-best-friend, Elizabeth Walker.

After Henry’s death in 2002, Nancy enjoyed cooking and spending time with her many grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of her friends, playing bridge and spending time in various book clubs or with other church members.

Nancy was loved by those around her and will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Phillip Ewald and her Husband Henry. She is survived by her brother Robert Rhoads of Dallas, her daughter Donna Gregg and husband George of Colorado Springs, Donna’s sons James and Dane, and her son John Ewald of Seguin and his daughters, Caroline, Jacqueline, Annabelle, Mary Claire, Savannah and Margaret.

A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeogh Hall.

Private interment will be held in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Senate Republicans Block IVF Bill

(Washington, DC) -- Senate Republicans are blocking a bill that would protect access to in vitro fertilization. Democrat Tammy Duckworth of Illinois on Wednesday tried to pass the bill by unanimous consent. It was opposed by Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, who said the bill would legalize human cloning and gene-edited designer babies, among other things. Duckworth defended the bill, and said it simply gives people a federal right to pursue reproductive technology. Earlier this month, the Alabama Supreme Court declared that frozen embryos are children. Several clinics in Alabama have already stopped IVF treatments as a result.

Indiana Ban On Care For Transgender Youth Takes Effect Immediately

(Indianapolis, IN) -- An Indiana law that prevents medical providers from providing gender-affirming health care for minors is now in effect. The law, which was signed by Governor Eric Holcomb last year, was supposed to go into effect mid-2023 but the law was blocked after a lawsuit brought by several transgender youth, their parents, a doctor and health clinic. But on Tuesday, the seventh circuit court of appeals issued a stay that lifts the previous ban on the law. The law will now take effect immediately.

FDA Says Food Packaging With “Forever Chemicals” No Longer Sold In US

(Washington, DC) -- The Food and Drug Administration says food packaging that contains harmful, long-lasting chemicals will no longer being sold in the U.S. Man-made chemicals called PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals,” don’t break down and have been associated with serious health risks. On Wednesday, the FDA announced food packages that contained these “forever chemicals” will no longer be sold nationwide. The FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods called the move a major win for public health.

U.S. Economy To Reap Benefits From Americans Taking Popular Weight Loss Drugs

(New York, NY) -- Recent research shows the U.S. economy is set to reap considerable benefits from Americans taking popular medications used for weight loss. Goldman Sachs forecasts that the use of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic could add zero-point-four percent to America’s GPD. The overall economy was about 28-trillion-dollars in the fourth quarter, so if Goldman’s bullish case bears out, that means GLP-1 drugs alone could boost output by a trillion dollars over the next four years. Government statistics show that more than a third of Americans are overweight and more than 42-percent are obese. Obesity and related complications contribute to constraints on labor supply in the U.S.

Noche De Gala Competencia De Vocalistas

The Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will have its 39th Annual Noche De Gala Competencia De Vocalistas at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at Jackson Auditorium on the campus of Texas Lutheran University.
