Public Meetings Set for Community INPUT on REDEVELOPMENT of

Downtown Wells Fargo Building Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The vision for the city of Seguin’s newly purchased Wells Fargo property begins with you.

The city will not have one but three opportunities to hear public input.

The city recently purchased the Wells Fargo property located at 101 E. Nolte in downtown Seguin.

The city council also approved a partnership with TBA Douglas Architects who will help sell the property to a qualified developer. The goal is to select a developer who will then redevelop the site based on the community’s vision.

Kyle Kramm, the Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says the next step in the process is to begin creating the vision for the redevelopment of the property. Wells Fargo, pg. 2

“The city has officially purchased the property and so we are now the owners of the Wells Fargo bank building and the whole block that it sits on and so right now, we are in phase two of our process which is the public input process where we are wanting to hear from the public and what uses they want to see at the site, what they want it to look like, how it will fit into the overall downtown character. We will enter phase three which will be more work on getting the site ready for a developer and then phase four will actually be working with our consultant to find qualified developers who the city will ultimately negotiate with and sell the property to the qualified developer,” said Kramm.

Each of the three subsequent meetings will build upon the previous meeting and will go from broader topics to more defined subjects.

He says the meetings are designed to hear the logistics of all the possibilities.

“What restaurants do they want to see, would they prefer it to be hotel or multi-family or office. There’s a variety of uses that could fit on this site so we want to hear from the public of what their ideal uses would be as well as what it is going to look like. Some of the ideas being proposed are a four and five tower with hotels or multi family. Is that too high for us? Or do we want to keep it lower? So, what are the design standards that the community really wants to see? It’s also going to be somewhat educational. If we go up one more floor, this could be the economic impact on the community by adding this additional floor of residential or hotel or office so it is really a great opportunity for the community to share what their vision is but also to hear from consultants about what the impact this project could have on all of Seguin,” said Kramm. All meetings will be held at the Seguin Public Library starting at 6 pm.

• The first public meeting is on Wednesday, Feb. 21 where discussions will focus on downtown character, design, use of the public right of way, amenities and more.

• Meeting #2 will be Thursday, March 7.

Discussions will focus on the appropriate program, preliminary development studies completed, and economic impact of the different development scenarios.

• The last public meeting will be Wednesday, March 20 with a focus on development standards.

Discussions will include appropriate materials, scaling, setbacks, uses and streetscape.

Kramm says he hopes the community begins to plan now and will get these meetings marked in their calendars.

He says it’s not only about locking down the idea but narrowing in on the benefits for the entire community.

“What is it they want to see. Is it where there are people downtown 24/7. With a hotel, you will have people there all the time. With an office, it will be more 8 to 5 so it’s kind of what your vision is for downtown and for all of Seguin. This significant investment of downtown will be a couple of million to $30-40 million depending on what gets developed there. It will have a significant impact on the whole community,” said Kramm.

City officials say the public is encouraged to attend all three meetings or as many as they possibly can just to get a better idea of the city’s direction. A project website has also been created for the public to stay up to date on the development.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion and Navarro girls fall out of playoffs Chris Austin

(Spring Branch) -- Needing a win and a Pieper loss to force a playin game into the Bi-District round, the scenario played out the way the Seguin Matadors needed on Tuesday night.

Seguin took down the Smithson Valley Rangers in Spring Branch, 6249. Senior John Jackson, who had 44 points in a win over Pieper on Friday night, poured in 29 Tuesday night to keep the Matadors’ playoff hopes alive.

Meanwhile over at Pieper High School, the Wagner Thunderbirds knocked off the Warriors 39-32 creating a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 26-5A between Seguin and Pieper. The Matadors and Warriors will now go to a play-in game to determine the district’s final playoff team.

That game will happen on Friday at Cibolo Steele High School. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. Seguin and Pieper split their two district games with each team winning on its home court.

In girls playoff action on Tuesday night: (Floresville) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers fell to the Cuero Lady Gobblers in the Class 4A Bi-District round, 45-27 in Floresville.

Tegan Harborth led Navarro with 12 points. The Lady Panthers season ends with a record of 24-13. Navarro finished tied for third in District 27-4A under longtime coach Darrell Harborth who has been the Lady Panther head coach for the last 25 years.

(Seguin) -- The Marion Lady Bulldogs also saw their season come to an end in the Class 3A Bi-District round on Tuesday night.

The Edna Cowgirls defeated Marion in the playoff, 63-41 at Goldie Harris Gym. The Lady Bulldogs closed their season with 11 wins. They finished third in District 26-3A this season under first year head coach Brianna Randle.

(Marion) -- Over in Marion last night, the Bulldog boys were dropped by first-place Cole in a playoff tune-up for both teams.

The Cougars got a 47-35 win in the final game of the district season.

Richie Rayos had 14 points to lead the Bulldogs. Travis Randle added 10. Marion ends their regular season with a 21-9 overall record, finishing third in District 26-3A. Marion will play Yoakum in the Bi-District round next week. Marion beat Yoakum 47-28 at the Marion basketball tournament on December 1st.

(Fredericksburg) -- And there was one more boys’ game last night.

The Navarro Panthers ended their season in Fredericksburg with a 76-33 loss to the Billies.

Dora Elia (Valdez) Davis passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the age of 93. She was born to Federico Valdez and Feliciana Villareal on February 20, 1930 in Galveston, Texas.

Dora is preceded in death by her parents, Federico and Feliciana Valdez, and infant brothers, Jose and Hector Valdez.

Left to cherish and honor her memory is her son, Edward W. Davis and wife Jessica; grandsons, Jordan A. Davis and Damian R. Medina; great granddaughter, Alina S. Davis; sisters, Gloria Gonzales, Helda Adame, and Irma Castañon and husband, Robert Castañon; brothers, Homer Valdez, Federico Valdez Jr. and wife Carmen Trevino, and Hector Valdez. She will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano, our beloved Mother, passed away at the age of 89. Born on December 7, 1934, in Seguin, Texas, Sarah was a remarkable woman whose life touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

Sarah married the love of her life on September 25, 1957, and relocated with her husband and children to Houston in 1967 to build a beautiful family home before returning to Seguin after the loss of her husband in 2001.

Sarah’s passion for life was evident in her many hobbies and interests. She found great joy in spending time with her family, cooking delicious meals, creating beautiful crafts, and exploring new destinations through her travels. A skilled gardener with a green thumb, Sarah nurtured vibrant blooms that brought beauty to her surroundings.

Her favorite pastime was playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment, and creating precious memories. Sarah’s mischievous side would come out as she snuck a candy or two past them, bringing laughter and delight to their faces. She was also a proud member of the Guadalupanas of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in her earlier years. She was a devout Catholic of strong faith and instilled those values in her family’s life.

But it was Sarah’s love for singing that truly captured the hearts of those who knew her. From a young age, she possessed a beautiful voice that resounded with passion and soul. Singing brought her immense joy, and she shared her talent with others until illness struck. Although her voice is now silent, its absence is felt by all who were fortunate enough to have heard it.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gumecindo and Matiana Lopez DeLaCruz; her beloved husband of 44 years, Jose Americo Medrano; her cherished son Edmundo Medrano; and siblings Edward (Lefty) DeLaCruz, Reyes

DeLaCruz, Ramona D. Salazar (Torivio), and Mary D. Gonzales (Ruben). Their memory will forever be held close in the hearts of those who loved Sarah deeply.

Sarah leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire us all. She is survived by her sister Belia D. Guerrero, brothers Toribio (Gloria) and Leonides “Leo” (Emma) DeLaCruz, daughters Esmeralda M. Wheeler (Todd) and Norma McGaughey; grandchildren, Misty Hales (Peter), Sarah Yvonne Chamberlain (Steven), Patrick Gonzales (Hortensia), Celestina Lopez (Jason), Frances Medrano, Dallas Cheverere (Matt), Edmundo Medrano II (Crystal), Bobbie Jo Stackhouse (Thomas), Dolores Medrano, Elise McGaughey, and Simmion Sanders. Additionally, Sarah is also survived by fifteen greatgrandchildren, two great-great-grandsons, and numerous friends who became family through the years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Palmer Mortuary from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. and will be livestreamed for those who are not able to attend physically.

Visitation will continue on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Palmer Mortuary starting at 8:30 a.m. and a funeral procession will depart from the chapel for a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband.

Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano was a shining light in our lives—a woman whose love knew no bounds. The legacy she leaves behind serves as a reminder to us all to embrace each day with gratitude and joy. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the indelible mark she left on our hearts.

Olga Ramos, age 79, of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 13, 2024. She was born on January 13, 1945, in Seguin to Jesusa (Garcia) and Senovio Guerrero.

Olga and Lupe were married for 60 years on September 22, 2023. She loved to do crafts and take care of her puppy, Bear.

She loved taking care of others, especially her children, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Her tamales were her specialty. She was one in a million!

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Juan “Johnny” Garcia and Larry Garcia, and her sister Marilu Flores.

Francesca Bell, age 101 of Seguin, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2024.

She was born in Molfetta, Italy, on October 15, 1922, to Maria and Dominico DeCeglie.

When Francesca was three years old, the family moved to Marseille, France where she grew up and attended school. In 1939, the family returned to Italy and lived in Bari where she met her future husband, William R. Bell, a US serviceman from Wyoming who was stationed nearby during World War II. They were married on May 2, 1944, and lived in Bari.

In 1945, after the war ended, she traveled with their six-month-old daughter to the United States to join her husband who had already been returned to the States where he was discharged.

Francesca and her infant daughter made the arduous journey by ship when Francesca was unable to speak a word of English. They landed in Boston, from where they traveled by train to meet Bill in Wyoming.

Bill and Francesca purchased a ranch near Arvada, Wyoming. They raised a family of three girls and operated the ranch until 1991 when they retired to Sheridan, Wyoming. In 2004 they moved to Seguin, Texas, to be closer to family.

At the time of her death, Francesca lived with her daughter Willa in Seguin.

Francesca was a French-trained seamstress and tailor, a talented watercolor artist, and an accomplished quilter, crocheter, and knitter.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William R. Bell.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Eikenberry, Willa Hagemann, and Yvonne Johnson; grandchildren Bill Eikenberry, Tom Eikenberry, Crysti Wilson, Shawn Johnson, Kelly Hagemann, and Tom Hagemann; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, nieces and nephews, many friends and other loving family members.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at San Geronimo Cemetery with Chaplain Jimisu Stuckey officiating.

Elderly Man Becomes First Known Patient To Die From “Alaskapox” (Fairbanks, AK) -- An elderly man who lived on a remote peninsula in Alaska has become the first known patient to die from “Alaskapox.”

The virus, discovered in 2015 by scientists in Fairbanks, is thought to spread from rodents to humans but Alaskan authorities believe the victim contracted the disease after being scratched by a stray cat. The man was immunocompromised and being treated for cancer.

“Alaskapox,” also known as AKPV, is in the same family of viruses as smallpox, cowpox and mpox.

Northwest Region Seeing Moderate Flu Levels (Staunton, VA) -- Health officials in the Central Shenandoah Health District say the region is still experiencing moderate levels of flu. The Population Health Manager says more than four-percent of ER visits across the commonwealth are due to the flu. Officials say numbers of flu are down compared to where they were at the end of 2023. They say less than 30-percent of the population below the age of 50 have received the flu vaccine. About 47-percent of adults 50 and older have been vaccinated. Health officals say it is still not too late to get your current flu vaccine.
