(Seguin) -- Local flower shops are throwing out the safety net just in case you forgot today was Valentine’s Day. Today marks one of the busiest times for floral shops everywhere.

Among those putting in the work to make sure Cupid does not strike out here in Seguin is Dietz Flower Shop.

Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says no matter what time of the day, customers will be taken care of.

“Just come on in. Give us a call or come in, check out our website. We have lots of selections still available.

So, we’ve got you covered,” said Lum. Helping to ensure those Valentines is the staff and even some

extra staff. In fact, Lum says her crew has been non-stop all week long.

“A lot of hard work and a lot of team work -- it takes every one of us just pulling together and becoming as sufficient as we can to push out the best quality floral arrangements that we can,” said Lum. Over the years, a stop at your local flower shop has evolved into more than just flowers. Lum says folks today will find all sorts of gift ideas.

Seguin observes Ash Wednesday Churches teams up to host Ashes To Go Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) - Today is not only about love but also about sacrifice.

Today marks the start of the Lenten season and the continuation of the annual Ashes-To-Go. Pastors from Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church and Friedens United Church of Chris will again hit the streets this Ash Wednesday for the distribution of ashes outside Emanuel’s Church facing Gonzales Street.

Pastor Marcus Bigott says both ashes and blessings will be given out to passers-by in cars or those on bike or foot.

Bigott reminds the community of the Lenten season and its countdown to the Easter holiday.

“The importance to Ash Wednesday is the beginning of our Lenten journey but in a way that

folks might be able to fit better into a busy schedule -- maybe folks that can’t make it to worship or couldn’t get back to church whenever those services happen to be as a way of being reminded of the journey that is to come, to be reminded of their own humanity and need for love and grace and hope and all of those things but done in a space that also doesn’t look like church and maybe that is also an opportunity for folks that have felt disenfranchised by the church to maybe gently engage with their faith once again,” said Bigott.

He says Ash Wednesday is a Holy day observed by various faith communities and hopes the drive through Ashes to Go event will reach as many people as possible.

“My personal take is being able to engage with folks -- as I said,

people who have found the church to not be a place of welcome. Over these last few years that I have been here at Emanuel’s, I have found this to be a beautiful way of engaging with people who struggle with what church is but still have in their hearts and in their minds, a deep seeded place of faith -- knowing and realizing that this is something that is much larger than institutions. It is much larger than the physical structures of our churches but it is about relationship.

So, when I boil down the ashes to go and Ash Wednesday itself, it is about rekindling the relationships with people as they rekindle their relationship with God,” said Bigott.

The Ashes will be distributed on foreheads today from noon to 1 p.m. outside Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.

Local bank asking Seguin to complete 350,000 acts of kindness challenge Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- When you think of a bank, the first thing that usually pops into a person's mind is money. But for one bank here in Seguin, it's all about that one thing that doesn't cost a penny - kindness.

Each February, millions of people come together to change the world, one random act of kindness at a time.

Taking the lead this month here in Seguin is First United Bank.

First United Bank says it is mobilizing its stakeholders to once again this year complete 350,000 acts of kindness in one day.

Sharing in the bank's commitment to add up all those acts of kindness is Mary Hernandez.

Hernandez serves as the senior relationship banker for their Seguin West location and she is the coordinator for United Acts of Kindness in Seguin.

"Our bank looks to just push it forward a little more and so we have United Acts of Kindness and we are celebrating Feb. 12-16 with our biggest day obviously on Feb. 16 and we are just looking to highlight and celebrate others through acts of kindness and just the great things people are already doing in our community," said Hernandez.

Hernandez says working to spread joy, hope and love goes beyond its bank walls.

"We are a faith based institution. We are privately owned by employees and by the Massey Family and we stand on our pillars of the bank so we are looking to impact lives and grow lives in our communities that we serve. So, yes we know we have a whole lot more to offer than just financial advice and services," said Hernandez.

Bank officials say anyone can participate, and no act is too big or too small to elevate a life or make an impact.

She says this kindness revolution also serves as reminder that many differences are made each day thanks

"We have a lot of events that we are doing in each of our branches that are serving specifically our customers -- just loving them and letting them know we appreciate them and then just to tell them about our kindness drive and how to pay it forward and things like that but we are also partnering with some other community members and things like that and honestly, the goal is to just get the word out there. We have people in our community that do random kind things every single day and just to make more awareness of that, we do have a website out there, Unitedactsofkindness.org where people can log their acts of kindness and like I said, there's just so much good stuff going on out there and so just to kind of put that kindness on asteroids," said Hernandez.

Folks are also encouraged to share kindness stories on social media this Friday using #UnitedActsOfKindness.

Valentine’s Day is big business drawing in thousands of customers into local stores. Lum says the only

objectives for her staff are to remain focused and to keep those floral designs coming.

“Over the course of the three days, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we probably will push out a little under maybe 350 to 400 deliveries over those three days. Those are just deliveries. Those aren’t counting people that come in and do either pickups or walk in and take with right there at that moment,” said Lum. In 2023, consumers across the nation spent close to $24 billon on Valentine’s Day gifts. Of that amount $2.3 billon was strictly spent on just flowers.

Pro Sports UPDATE Troubled Former Basketball Player Cuffed Again (San Antonio, TX) -- Former San Antonio Spurs player Bryn Forbes is under arrest again. He’s been charged with choking his girlfriend on Monday. She escaped and called police. They arrested Forbes today.

The 30-year-old former point guard was previously arrested on a family violence charge. Those charges were later dismissed after he completed pre-trial diversion. He played for the Spurs from 2016 to 2020.

Report: Knicks File Protest With NBA (Undated) -- The Knicks are disputing their recent game against the Rockets. According to ESPN, the Knicks decided to file a protest highlighting the NBA’s Last Two Minute Report and game crew chief Ed Malloy’s acknowledgments that the foul call on Knicks guard Jalen Brunson against Houston’s Aaron Holiday inside the final second was incorrectly called. The hope of the protest is to either pick up a tie game with the start of overtime, or somehow remedy the Knicks without a loss.

A protest must prove the “misapplication” of a rule, not simply a missed call. Only six protests in league history have been upheld.

49ers’ DL Arik Armstead Set For Knee Surgery (Santa Clara, CA) -- A key member of the 49ers’ fearsome defensive line is set for offseason surgery. San Francisco defensive tackle Arik Armstead will undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee in the coming days. He was injured during the Week 13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles and did not suit up again until the NFC Divisional Round contest against the Green Bay Packers on January 20th. The

30-year-old posted 11 tackles, one sack, a fumble recovery and seven QB pressures in three playoff games. Armstead said that he is hoping to be ready by the start of training camp.

Report: Giants Sign Jorge Soler To Three-Year Deal (Undated) -- The Giants are adding a proven slugger to the roster prior to the start of spring training. ESPN reports that San Francisco is signing outfielder Jorge Soler [[ soh-LAIR ]] to a three-year, 42-million dollar contract. Soler had the option to remain with the Miami Marlins under his previous contract, but he chose to decline a nine-million dollar player option. The 31-year-old was selected to his first career All-Star Game last season after batting .250 with 36 home runs and 75 RBI. The 10-year veteran has also previously suited up for the Cubs, Royals and Braves.

Florida Sports Betting Fight Goes To Supreme Court (Washington, DC) -- The fight over sports betting in Florida is heading to the Supreme Court. Two companies have asked the nation’s highest court to block a 2021 deal giving the Seminole Tribe control over sports betting in the state. Lawyers for Bontia-Fort Myers Corp and West Flagler Associates filed the petition less then a month after the tribe paid around 58-milliondollars to the state in the first installment of a revenue sharing agreement after mobile sports gambling was launched in November. The lawsuit focuses on the part of the deal that gives the Seminoles control over sports betting in Florida and said it violates a state Constitutional amendment that requires voter approval of gambling expansions. There’s also a separate challenge at the Florida Supreme Court.

Dora Elia (Valdez) Davis passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the age of 93. She was born to Federico Valdez and Feliciana Villareal on February 20, 1930 in Galveston, Texas.

Dora is preceded in death by her parents, Federico and Feliciana Valdez, and infant brothers, Jose and Hector Valdez.

Left to cherish and honor her memory is her son, Edward W. Davis and wife Jessica; grandsons, Jordan A. Davis and Damian R. Medina; great granddaughter, Alina S. Davis; sisters, Gloria Gonzales, Helda Adame, and Irma Castañon and husband, Robert Castañon; brothers, Homer Valdez, Federico Valdez Jr. and wife Carmen Trevino, and Hector Valdez. She will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home with the Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Valdez Cemetery in Zuehl, Texas.

Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano, our beloved Mother, passed away at the age of 89. Born on December 7, 1934, in Seguin, Texas, Sarah was a remarkable woman whose life touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

Sarah married the love of her life on September 25, 1957, and relocated with her husband and children to Houston in 1967 to build a beautiful family home before returning to Seguin after the loss of her husband in 2001.

Sarah’s passion for life was evident in her many hobbies and interests. She found great joy in spending time with her family, cooking delicious meals, creating beautiful crafts, and exploring new destinations through her travels. A skilled gardener with a green thumb, Sarah nurtured vibrant blooms that brought beauty to her surroundings.

Her favorite pastime was playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment, and creating precious memories. Sarah’s mischievous side would come out as she snuck a candy or two past them, bringing laughter and delight to their faces. She was also a proud member of the Guadalupanas of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in her earlier years. She was a devout Catholic of strong faith and instilled those values in her family’s life.

But it was Sarah’s love for singing that truly captured the hearts of those who knew her. From a young age, she possessed a beautiful voice that resounded with passion and soul. Singing brought her immense joy, and she shared her talent with others until illness struck. Although her voice is now silent, its absence is felt by all who were fortunate enough to have heard it.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gumecindo and Matiana Lopez DeLaCruz; her beloved husband of 44 years, Jose Americo Medrano; her cherished son Edmundo Medrano; and siblings Edward (Lefty) DeLaCruz, Reyes

DeLaCruz, Ramona D. Salazar (Torivio), and Mary D. Gonzales (Ruben). Their memory will forever be held close in the hearts of those who loved Sarah deeply.

Sarah leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire us all. She is survived by her sister Belia D. Guerrero, brothers Toribio (Gloria) and Leonides “Leo” (Emma) DeLaCruz, daughters Esmeralda M. Wheeler (Todd) and Norma McGaughey; grandchildren, Misty Hales (Peter), Sarah Yvonne Chamberlain (Steven), Patrick Gonzales (Hortensia), Celestina Lopez (Jason), Frances Medrano, Dallas Cheverere (Matt), Edmundo Medrano II (Crystal), Bobbie Jo Stackhouse (Thomas), Dolores Medrano, Elise McGaughey, and Simmion Sanders. Additionally, Sarah is also survived by fifteen greatgrandchildren, two great-great-grandsons, and numerous friends who became family through the years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Palmer Mortuary from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. and will be livestreamed for those who are not able to attend physically.

Visitation will continue on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Palmer Mortuary starting at 8:30 a.m. and a funeral procession will depart from the chapel for a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband.

Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano was a shining light in our lives—a woman whose love knew no bounds. The legacy she leaves behind serves as a reminder to us all to embrace each day with gratitude and joy. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the indelible mark she left on our hearts.

As a family, we are honored to have had the opportunity to experience her loving arms in comfort and a stern look or pinch in correction. We will forever cherish the love and memories she left in our hearts. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Eunice and Lee Mortuary for Virginia Grant who died Friday, February 9th at the age of 48. She is survived by children, Andrae and LaToya Grant;siblings Jesse Mae Wilson and Terrell Grant.

Francesca Bell, age 101 of Seguin, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2024.

She was born in Molfetta, Italy, on October 15, 1922, to Maria and Dominico DeCeglie.

When Francesca was three years old, the family moved to Marseille, France where she grew up and attended school. In 1939, the family returned to Italy and lived in Bari where she met her future husband, William R. Bell, a US serviceman from Wyoming who was stationed nearby during World War II. They were married on May 2, 1944, and lived in Bari.

In 1945, after the war ended, she traveled with their six-month-old daughter to the United States to join her husband who had already been returned to the States where he was discharged.

Francesca and her infant daughter made the arduous journey by ship when Francesca was unable to speak a word of English. They landed in Boston, from where they traveled by train to meet Bill in Wyoming.

Bill and Francesca purchased a ranch near Arvada, Wyoming. They raised a family of three girls and operated the ranch until 1991 when they retired to Sheridan, Wyoming. In 2004 they moved to Seguin, Texas, to be closer to family.

At the time of her death, Francesca lived with her daughter Willa in Seguin.

Francesca was a French-trained seamstress and tailor, a talented watercolor artist, and an accomplished quilter, crocheter, and knitter.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William R. Bell.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Eikenberry, Willa Hagemann, and Yvonne Johnson; grandchildren Bill Eikenberry, Tom Eikenberry, Crysti Wilson, Shawn Johnson, Kelly Hagemann, and Tom Hagemann; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, nieces and nephews, many friends and other loving family members.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at San Geronimo Cemetery with Chaplain Jimisu Stuckey officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Tools Provide the Public with a View of Diseases Affecting the State The Texas Department of State Health Services has launched new data tools to let people keep tabs on respiratory viruses in Texas.

A respiratory virus dashboard accessible through DSHS’s Texas Health Data site shows trends in illnesses from influenza, COVID-19 and RSV, the “big three” respiratory viruses most likely to cause serious disease at this time of year. Data includes emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths.

“Those data points demonstrate the diseases’ most severe effects on people, communities and the health care system,” said DSHS Commissioner Jennifer Shuford, MD, MPH. “The dashboard provides a near real-time look at conditions, so people can make informed decisions on precautions for themselves and their families, and health care professionals can make recommendations to their patients.”

DSHS is also publishing a new weekly respiratory virus surveillance report, combining separate reports on influenza, COVID-19 and RSV. The report contains more in-depth data on the three diseases including information on the burden of influenza-like illness, counties where different types of flu have been found, and the proportions of COVID-19 variants present in Texas.

Respiratory virus season runs from October to May and usually peaks in the winter. However, the viruses are always circulating, so there is a risk of infection at any time of year.

Getting immunized against respiratory viruses is a good way for people to protect themselves against the severe disease, hospitalization and death they can cause. People can also help keep respiratory viruses from spreading by washing their hands frequently with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when they are sick.

Salvation Army Office The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Volunteers Needed The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18.
