New wheels hit the streets for area veterans

Volunteer drivers encouraged to sign up Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Area veterans have a new set of wheels and that’s all thanks to the Guadalupe County Veterans Service Office.

Veterans Service Office Director Nancy Russell says after much anticipation, the group was able to welcome a new van that will help transport veterans to and from their VA appointments.

“We do have a van currently. It is small. It’s not wheelchair accessible. This new van has a high ceiling height and a low depth. It is ground level so that veterans can walk right into it. They don’t have to stoop and crawl into it.

It has wheelchair lifts and we’ve been providing this service for years but now, we will have two vans and the option to accommodate a wheelchair,” said Russell.

Russell says the addition of this new van is a definite game changer as it now allows them to assist any veteran.

“We had people that we were not able to accommodate and some of our veterans as they aged and when they started, they didn’t need a wheelchair and then they did and we were not able to help them any longer,” said Russell.

Project graduation seeking donations for SHS seniors Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- It’s time to round up support for the 2024 graduating class of Seguin High School.

Members of this year’s Project Graduation committee are turning to the community for support in their planning of this year’s event.

Leading the group is Coty Orona, the president of the Project Graduation committee.

Orona says for years, high school graduates have been kept safe each graduation night.

“This is absolutely a safe environment on graduation night.

So, the purpose of it is – it’s going to be an all-night alcohol and drug free celebration for seniors on their graduation night. In this case, this year, it will be in Seguin. We are going to use the Columbus Hall, the KC Hall and we will be there from

11 p.m. until 5 a.m. and it will be drug-free, lots of food, lots of music, beverages, games. We are going to have security so we will all be safe – definitely entertainment and just a lot of different prizes just to keep them in a great environment that will keep everybody out of trouble,” said Orona.

The much-needed celebration is

important, but it’s not cheap.

Orona says it’s an expensive endeavor, which is why hosting the overnight event -- relies heavily on the generosity of community and business leaders.

“The financial support is huge.

Obviously, we will be paying for games, also we try to have prizes in the past and we want to continue the same prizes such as TV sets, computers, gift cards, iPods, iPads if necessary so we just want to make sure that we give them a great fun environment but also give some gifts that they will be able to use once they go into college or trade school or their job if that’s what they choose to do,” said Orona.

Local food establishments have also shown their support in planning for the event.

The addition of a new van also means a bigger push for volunteer drivers.

Even before the arrival of this new van, Russell says the program has always struggled with recruiting volunteers.

“A lot of veterans wait for their VA appointments for months and it is really important to have a pool of volunteers because if one volunteer gets sick, we need someone else to step up or veterans will lose this opportunity to have this appointment that they have Donations, continued.

But again, Orona says monetary donations are needed NOW to ensure that there are not only prizes, but also games which will help keep graduates entertained overnight.

“We have seven different sponsor levels, commitments, anywhere from $100 up to $5,000. Other amounts are also accepted. We do have a P.O. Box. locally in Seguin that they can send it to. They can call us directly and we also have an email that can be used,” said Orona.

Orona says anyone who has

waited months to have and so it is just really really hard for them when they aren’t able to go. Sometimes, we have three or four people going in one day. It could be none or one but you can also bring your spouse along with you or caregiver because we do have space for additional people in this new van, said Russell.

assistance whether it’s personal or financial really would be beneficial because today you may not have a senior and a couple of years down the road, you may have a senior that is graduating and this is such a wonderful event for our seniors at Seguin High School,” said Orona.

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team continued its final homestand of the 2023-24 regular season by staging a dominant 91-47 victory over the St. Thomas Celts.

Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) erupted for 11 points in the first half and helped the Bulldogs (19-5, 12-3 SCAC) to separate from the Celts early. The win marked the Bulldogs tenth wire-to-wire victory of the season. Mulkey finished with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting in addition to three rebounds and three assists without playing a single second of the fourth quarter. With her performance, Mulkey eclipsed 800 points in her collegiate career and passed former teammate Morgan Rodriguez to move into 19th on the TLU all-time scoring list.

The Bulldogs have prided themselves on defense and sharing the basketball under head coach Troy Patterson and Saturday was no different. Thirteen of the 15 active players - who all saw action - recorded at least one assist as the Bulldogs matched their seasonhigh with 27 assists on 34 field goals. The backcourt of Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/

FEAST) and Kayla Presley (Kyle/San Marcos) combined for seven assists as Presley and Juliett Martinez (San Antonio/Reagan) led the Bulldogs with four assists each.

Kailey Lacy (Pflugerville/Hendrickson) led all scorers with 16 points including 4-of7 from beyond the arc. Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O’Connor) led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds off the bench.

Every available player recorded minutes for the 12th time this season and every available Bulldog scored at least one point.

The 44-point win was the team’s largest win margin this season and its largest since beating Concordia (TX) by 43 points (84-

41) in the 2021-22 season. The margin is the largest in-conference since their 48-point victory over Centenary (87-39) in the Spring 2021 season. The Bulldogs extend their win streak to six games, the longest under head coach Troy Patterson and the longest since the 2018-19 season.

Texas Lutheran concludes the regular season on Friday, Feb. 16 against the Southwestern University Pirates at Memorial Gymnasium. Friday will also act as Senior Night for the Bulldogs as they will recognize their senior class for all of their contributions to the program. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM. Dora Elia (Valdez) Davis passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the age of 93. She was born to Federico Valdez and Feliciana Villareal on February 20, 1930 in Galveston, Texas.

Dora is preceded in death by her parents, Federico and Feliciana Valdez, and infant brothers, Jose and Hector Valdez.

Left to cherish and honor her memory is her son, Edward W. Davis and wife Jessica; grandsons, Jordan A. Davis and Damian R. Medina; great granddaughter, Alina S. Davis; sisters, Gloria Gonzales, Helda Adame, and Irma Castañon and husband, Robert Castañon; brothers, Homer Valdez, Federico Valdez Jr. and wife Carmen Trevino, and Hector Valdez. She will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home with the Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano, our beloved Mother, passed away at the age of 89. Born on December 7, 1934, in Seguin, Texas, Sarah was a remarkable woman whose life touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

Sarah married the love of her life on September 25, 1957, and relocated with her husband and children to Houston in 1967 to build a beautiful family home before returning to Seguin after the loss of her husband in 2001.

Sarah’s passion for life was evident in her many hobbies and interests. She found great joy in spending time with her family, cooking delicious meals, creating beautiful crafts, and exploring new destinations through her travels. A skilled gardener with a green thumb, Sarah nurtured vibrant blooms that brought beauty to her surroundings.

Her favorite pastime was playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment, and creating precious memories. Sarah’s mischievous side would come out as she snuck a candy or two past them, bringing laughter and delight to their faces. She was also a proud member of the Guadalupanas of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in her earlier years. She was a devout Catholic of strong faith and instilled those values in her family’s life.

But it was Sarah’s love for singing that truly captured the hearts of those who knew her. From a young age, she possessed a beautiful voice that resounded with passion and soul. Singing brought her immense joy, and she shared her talent with others until illness struck. Although her voice is now silent, its absence is felt by all who were fortunate enough to have heard it.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gumecindo and Matiana Lopez DeLaCruz; her beloved husband of 44 years, Jose Americo Medrano; her cherished son Edmundo Medrano; and siblings Edward (Lefty) DeLaCruz, Reyes

DeLaCruz, Ramona D. Salazar (Torivio), and Mary D. Gonzales (Ruben). Their memory will forever be held close in the hearts of those who loved Sarah deeply.

Sarah leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire us all. She is survived by her sister Belia D. Guerrero, brothers Toribio (Gloria) and Leonides “Leo” (Emma) DeLaCruz, daughters Esmeralda M. Wheeler (Todd) and Norma McGaughey; grandchildren, Misty Hales (Peter), Sarah Yvonne Chamberlain (Steven), Patrick Gonzales (Hortensia), Celestina Lopez (Jason), Frances Medrano, Dallas Cheverere (Matt), Edmundo Medrano II (Crystal), Bobbie Jo Stackhouse (Thomas), Dolores Medrano, Elise McGaughey, and Simmion Sanders. Additionally, Sarah is also survived by fifteen greatgrandchildren, two great-great-grandsons, and numerous friends who became family through the years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Palmer Mortuary from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. and will be livestreamed for those who are not able to attend physically.

Visitation will continue on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Palmer Mortuary starting at 8:30 a.m. and a funeral procession will depart from the chapel for a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband.

Sarah DeLaCruz Medrano was a shining light in our lives—a woman whose love knew no bounds. The legacy she leaves behind serves as a reminder to us all to embrace each day with gratitude and joy. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the indelible mark she left on our hearts.

As a family, we are honored to have had the opportunity to experience her loving arms in comfort and a stern look or pinch in correction. We will forever cherish the love and memories she left in our hearts. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Francesca Bell, age 101 of Seguin, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2024.

She was born in Molfetta, Italy, on October 15, 1922, to Maria and Dominico DeCeglie.

When Francesca was three years old, the family moved to Marseille, France where she grew up and attended school. In 1939, the family returned to Italy and lived in Bari where she met her future husband, William R. Bell, a US serviceman from Wyoming who was stationed nearby during World War II. They were married on May 2, 1944, and lived in Bari.

In 1945, after the war ended, she traveled with their six-month-old daughter to the United States to join her husband who had already been returned to the States where he was discharged.

Francesca and her infant daughter made the arduous journey by ship when Francesca was unable to speak a word of English. They landed in Boston, from where they traveled by train to meet Bill in Wyoming.

Bill and Francesca purchased a ranch near Arvada, Wyoming. They raised a family of three girls and operated the ranch until 1991 when they retired to Sheridan, Wyoming. In 2004 they moved to Seguin, Texas, to be closer to family.

At the time of her death, Francesca lived with her daughter Willa in Seguin.

Francesca was a French-trained seamstress and tailor, a talented watercolor artist, and an accomplished quilter, crocheter, and knitter.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William R. Bell.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Eikenberry, Willa Hagemann, and Yvonne Johnson; grandchildren Bill Eikenberry, Tom Eikenberry, Crysti Wilson, Shawn Johnson, Kelly Hagemann, and Tom Hagemann; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, nieces and nephews, many friends and other loving family members.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at San Geronimo Cemetery with Chaplain Jimisu Stuckey officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Teens Seeking Help For Substance Abuse Turn To Drugs For Stress Relief (Atlanta, GA) -- Teens are turning to drugs and alcohol to de-stress. That’s according to research from the CDC. The findings follow reports of rising anxiety and depression among American teens, along with higher levels of hopelessness. Nearly three in four teens surveyed said they used drugs to feel mellow, calm or relaxed.

Exposure Impacts Detailed In First Scientific Survey Of Lahaina Wildfire Survivor (Lahaina, HI) -- Survivors of the Lahaina wildfire are still suffering health issues half a year later. That’s according to researchers from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and the U.H. Economic Research Organization. This is the first scientific study of the health impacts from the wildfire last August 8th. It blames a series of health issues on the intense heat, smoke, and toxic ash the fire produced. Researchers interviewed more than 200 people who fled the fire zone to analyze the medical, emotional and financial impacts they still face. Seventy-fourpercent of those surveyed report poor respiratory health and 55-percent report depression symptoms like suicidal thoughts or feelings of hopelessness. Twenty-four-percent report having unsteady access to healthcare and 13-percent say they don’t have health insurance at all.

Seventy-six-percent of those surveyed lost homes, 58-percent lost jobs, and 35-percent report low food security.

MN Supreme Court Hears Challenge To Governor’s Emergency Powers (St. Paul, MN) -- The Minnesota Supreme Court is being asked to determine if Democrat Governor Tim Walz exceeded his authority when he issued a statewide mask mandate during the pandemic. The high court heard arguments yesterday from a case that was originally filed in Ramsey County in 2020. The lawsuit challenges the governor’s interpretation of a 1996 law giving his office emergency powers. The state says the governor has the authority to act broadly in a public health emergency. The group that filed the lawsuit says the governor used powers that should only be exercised by the legislature.

Plague Diagnosed In Central Oregon (Bend, OR) -- A person in Central Oregon has been diagnosed with Bubonic Plague. It’s the first time in nearly a decade that a case of plague has occurred in Oregon. Health officials believe the person got the disease from their cat. The person had a mild case and is recovering. All people who had contact with the person are taking antibiotics. If not treated early, plague can lead to a blood infection or pneumonia.
