Seguin ISD bond issue still being decided Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is laying out even more details behind the various items being proposed for a possible $21.75 million bond issue this May. The items were discussed during Wednesday night’s board workshop.

The school board last month voted to table the idea of a bond issue.

Trustees felt they needed to

know more about what was being prioritized and proposed to voters.

Leading the list of needs in Proposition A is $7.5 million for facilities upgrades at the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center.

Although the district purchased the property last year, upgrades are needed across the facility, including a completely new ropes course, a

structural upgrade of its science building and an upgrade to its walking trails to ensure a high level of inclusion for all those using the property.

District officials say the upgrades are sufficient for phase one of the SOLC’s future and would allow them to use property to full capacity.

Let the renovation begin, local golf course prepares for upgrades Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The Max Starcke Park Golf Course will soon be getting an $8 million makeover. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved an item that will allow staff to begin seeking bids for the total renovation of the municipal golf course.

The course has been attracting players to Seguin for decades, but its turf and its infrastructure need to be replaced. Golf Course Manager Bruce Allen walked the council through the many needs of the course. He says this was determined by a study conducted a couple of years ago. He says the new course designs are now in place, and it’s time to move forward with those renovations.

“Two years ago, we hired the National Golf Foundation to come and look at our situation and make recommendations and they came and assessed the course, met with the staff, met with our golfers and this is what they recommended – total replacement and expansion of the greens, total renovation and expansion of the tee boxes, total renovation of the fairways, total replacement and expansion of the irrigation system, total renovation of our sand bunkers and total renovation and expansion of the

driving range. The council agreed to that, and they allowed us to hire Brian Ross of Golf Design to come up with a plan and Brian finished that estimate last November and this is what he came up with – a project cost of $8.787,471 – less the ARPer (American Rescue Plan) funds we received so it’s about an $8.1 million project,” said Allen.

The golf course will have to shut down for about a year while the work is done. It’s consistent with the process used by the city of New Braunfels when it redesigned its Landa Park Golf Course several years ago.

City Manager Steve Parker says this is a big investment, but it’s one that he believes will serve the city well.

“When you look at the value of what this means to also our business community, our school districts and so forth. We did a great job of getting and making sure that we reached out to them. We have the Pan American league. We have the chamber of commerce and the school districts all giving letters of support as well because this is important to our community. As we grow and eventually get a conference center and things like that in our community, having this asset will really be a game

changer in my opinion but it does take a lot of courage for the city council to make these types of commitments but overall, this is not unordinary.

We do supplement parks. I think that is another point that we made. Our parks department probably costs us a million and a half to mow and change the garbage and so forth. They make a $100,000 in revenue and rentals and so forth, so we are subsiding them. This is another quality-of-life asset that yes, we can supplement some but work together to make sure it is minimal so we can move forward with other quality of life projects,” said Parker.

Mayor Donna Dodgen expressed similar comments. She says Seguin has a rich golf history, and it’s important that it be preserved for future generations.

“We deserve nice things, and we deserve things that we can be proud of and we deserve things that we can use to market Seguin. Our library is a prime example of what it does and who it brings, and I really feel our golf course can do that as well. I think that we have a variety of activities, and we have other things to do but this is one piece of what we need to make our community healthier, if I might say that.

They say they don’t want to overdevelop the facility but want to ensure that the proper and necessary upgrades are made. Now while the SOLC will be made available to students this Spring, the district realizes the importance of investing in the property now. They say this investment will help operate the SOLC for the next several years.

The next item being considered for possible voter approval is $3 million for land acquisition. They say the investment in land is not specific to a campus but instead would allow the district to purchase land at today’s prices.

Next on the list of bond project considerations is $6.5 million for school safety and security. Included in this plan is the Front Row System, a robust solution for school-wide communication that includes emergency notification and response plus school bell and paging intercom abilities among all classes. The system would include lanyards for all employees. The lanyards would act as a silent panic alarm during lockdowns or medical emergencies. The system would also help to address state mandates asking that districts secure their schools.

The district is also considering the purchase of six student activity buses for $750,000. The buses described more as shuttle buses would help the transportation of students in athletics and CTE. Not only is the district experiencing a shortage of bus drivers but there is also reportedly not enough coaches with CDL’s to drive the buses to sporting events. They say the lack of rental vehicles and their annual expense also have them prioritizing such buses for a potential bond.

Proposition B would also call for a roll out of classroom technology district wide with the purchase of $3.7 million in touch screen or digital white boards. The boards described as large, big screens are mobile and will serve as interactive tools for classroom instruction.

Prior to Wednesday night’s board workshop, district officials did note the hosting of a facilities committee meeting with community stakeholders. It was reported

that during that meeting, the future of Weinert and Jefferson Avenue Elementary School were also discussed.

Board member Denise Crettenden shared how the second phase for a Jefferson renovation has not been brought back to the table nor has anything been considered for Weinert – two of the district’s oldest properties.

The consideration of these projects in a future bond issue is still to be determined.

Seguin ISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil says the district will spend these next few days finalizing a plan for a bond or preparing perhaps a new direction in which to take.

“There is a lot to consider so what I want constituents to know is – a word that was repeated over and over yesterday was transparency and we want transparency, and we want to be transparent. We also want to be very honest with our words, saying that it might take more time. We don’t know. We are going to work day and night 24/7 to be able to answer every question that they have with full transparency. Considering everything that has been brought to the table, can we do it in a week? I don’t know but we certainly are going to try because this is important for students so we will try but if we can’t, then we will acknowledge that we can’t and we will postpone.

It will obviously be up to the board of trustees, but we will work day and night to get them the information that they need so that they can make a sound decision and that our constituents also are behind this effort and understand the why of the timing,” said Vijil.

If the Seguin ISD is to host a bond election in May, the school board must take that action before Feb. 16.

Should it decide to move forward with ordering a bond election, then district officials say the financial impact would be zero to the current tax rate. District officials say the area’s continued growth and positive financial standing would allow the district to secure the bonds with no additional burden to taxpayers.

If ordered, the bond election would be held on Saturday, May 4.

It is a huge part of that history and pride and so I think we need to take that back because we have lost some of that in the sense of what it looks like honestly and I want to bring that back. I want people to come play here because they know what Starcke Park was and is,” said Dodgen.

The city’s Golf Advisory Board has been a big part of the discussions about the course. Board Chairman Eric Aufderhaar says moving forward with the renovation of the golf course is the right thing to do.

“I want to be clear that I think this is important. We need to do it. I support the whole thing as you have before you. The other thing I was going to say is we have to keep the rates as low as possible for the citizens,” said Aufderhaar.

The city has been open about the need to consider raising rates when the course is reopened, but the council mostly held off on those discussions last night. It is something that will have to be considered, but that rate structure will have to be determined later. It could be an across-the-board rate increase, the city council offer a lower rate to players who live in the city, or there could be some other rate structure developed by the city. Whatever that decision is, it will eventually have to come back to the council for approval.

Meanwhile, the council’s latest action will allow the city to begin seeking bids on the various elements that will be included as part of the total renovation of the course.

Lady Matador softball pitchers Schultze and Hurt ink college commitments Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- Lady Matador softball players Madyson Schultze and Kendall Hurt signed on the dotted line during a college letter of intent signing ceremony at Seguin High School on Wednesday.

Both student-athletes are pitchers for the Lady Mats. They signed their letters ahead of the upcoming season which starts this month.

Kendall Hurt will play college softball at Lamar State College in Port Arthur. Kendall is a four-year letterman and a gold glove winner. She heads into her senior season coming off an all-district selection in her junior year. Kendall was the District 265A Pitcher of the Year in 2023.

She plans to study nursing at Lamar State College and intends

to become an RN after she completes her studies.

Kendall says she’s made a lifetime of friendships while playing for the Lady Mat softball program.

“I feel like the friendships I’m definitely gonna keep with me

because I’ve made so many sisters here. And the coaches really made an impact on me, so I definitely want to take that with me.”

Madyson Schultze will attend Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She is also a gold glove winner and earned all-district and

academic all-district accolades.

Madyson will study health science at Incarnate Word with plans to be a physical therapist after graduation.

Madyson and her younger sister Morgan both play for the Lady Mat softball team. And Madyson says she will miss playing with her younger sibling.

“I’m gonna really miss playing with my sister in high school and growing up with everyone here.

I’m gonna miss that.”

Kendall, Madyson and the Lady Matadors come into the 2024 season following an appearance in the UIL Bi-District round last year. Seguin will play at San Antonio Marshall this Saturday at noon. The Matador softball program is led by longtime head coach John Garcia.

Ernestine “Tina” Mata peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, at the age of 88.

She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and other family members. She was born to Secundina and Fernando Paez on November 29th, 1935, in Seguin, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Roy Paez, and her loving husband of 59 years, Alex Mata.

Left to cherish and honor her memory are her children; James Mata (Judy), Alex J. Tina and Alex married on August 19th, 1956, in Seguin, TX. She was a steadfast military spouse for 23 years while he served in the U.S. Air Force. They spent a lifetime traveling abroad and growing a beautiful family. Alongside her unwavering support, she found joy in thrift shopping, sewing, and creating beautiful quilts with her friends at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Tina loved to attend Wurstfest with her family and enjoyed dancing to polka music. Her nurturing spirit extended to caring for her grandchildren, leaving a legacy of love and creativity that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Services honoring Tina will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Mass at 10:30 a.m. A private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

CDC Warns Of Listeria Outbreak Linked To Recall Of Mexican Cheese (Undated) -- Popular brands of Mexican cheese and other dairy products are being linked to a listeria outbreak. The CDC says 26 people from eleven states have been infected after eating queso fresco [[ KAY-so FRES-koh ]], cotija [[ co-TEE-huh ]] cheese and other products made by Rizo-Lopez Foods. Twenty-three have been hospitalized and two deaths have been reported, one from California and the other from Texas. The company recalled all cheeses and other dairy products made in their facility on Monday.

Switching Up Arms Could Improve Vaccine Results (Portland, OR) -- Switching up arms for multi-dose vaccines could improve immune response by up to four times. That’s according to new research out of Oregon Health and Science University, which looked at how people received COVID-19 vaccine shots. Researchers say it could have implications for other types of vaccines as well. There’s no clear answer yet as to why switching arms improves results.

CA Scientists Working On New Blood Test To Detect Cancer (Stanford, CA) -- A California lab is on the verge of a medical breakthrough. Scientists at Stanford University are working on a blood test that could potentially save millions of lives by detecting cancer much earlier than before. They say the samples are far larger than what Theranos was doing before the company tanked, and able to show results. The test could also tell if patients are cancer-free so they can stop their medication sooner.

Florida Supreme Court Hears Arguments On Abortion Referendum (Tallahassee, FL) -- People on both sides of the abortion debate are watching what happens in Florida. The state’s Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday on whether an abortion referendum should go on November’s ballot. Pro-choice supporters signed a petition to add an abortion-rights amendment to the state constitution. The amendment says the state can’t restrict abortion before viability unless the patient’s health is in danger.
