Veterans Outreach Center to host information fair Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Services for area veterans will be found all under one roof this week. The Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Center will be hosting an information Fair this Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Helping to organize the event is Veterans Services Clerk Dina Dillon. Dillon says the information fair is another opportunity to showcase the center as a one stop shop for veterans and their families.

“With having a new building, we want to get veterans aware of all of the different organizations that can help them, benefit them, whether they have financial

questions; school education questions for their children or for themselves. Memorial Park is coming in if they want to prepare for a funeral eventually one day. Preemptive things are important. We even have legal services coming; UTSA for colleges; Alamo Colleges -- we have Medicare, health insurance; life insurance; HISA grants, various different things including Jujitsu, (for) exercise. So, we are trying to get everything covered in one full swoop where the veterans can come in and get information from all of the organizations that will be here,” said Dillon.

Seguin ISD to talk bond during board workshop Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin ISD board members will be diving a bit more into the possibility of ordering a bond issue this coming May. Although no official action will be taken tonight, trustees will be discussing the item during a special board workshop. The discussion comes after the board last month voted to table the item until they can learn exactly what is needed by the district.

According to Interim Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil, the proposed bond election could be as much as $5 million.

She says the bulk of the funding would go toward the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. She says with the district’s recent purchase of the property, the district now has to focus on preparing the educational facility for students.

The board, tonight, will also learn more on the findings by TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) who was scheduled to tour the facility and provide its own assessment on the property.

The meeting begins today at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room located in the district’s administrative building.

Tickets now on sale for Valentine's Day dinner, dance fundraiser Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A special Valentine's Day Dinner & Dance is coming early to Seguin this weekend.

Tickets are now on sale for the Geronimo Valentine's Dance benefiting Seguin Youth Services, and Friends Helping Friends of Guadalupe County.

The fundraiser, featuring live music by Clint Taft & and the Buck Wild Band , is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Geronimo Community Center.

Sheryl Sachtleben, of Seguin Youth Services, says the non-profit group bypassed its annual New Year's Eve dance for a chance at offering something a little different for area couples.

"We decided to include a dinner and dance to kind of give everybody an opportunity to have a date night and to get out and have dinner. Of course, you know Clint. He is really good. He tends to get everybody on the dance floor even people like me that don't dance. He's always been a lot of fun when he's been there. I'm expecting probably 150 to 200 people maybe. I've got my girl Frances on the cooking -- doing some baked chicken with her famous corn bread dressing. We've got tables sponsored by several businesses in town and so I'm thinking a lot of businesses are planning on coming out with their folks," said Sachtleben.

Sachtleben says each ticket includes the cost of a catered meal. That meal includes baked chicken, stuffing and green beans.

"The tickets are pre-sale right now at $20 and that's the dinner and the dance. It turns out Cash App is probably the easiest and then I'm just holding their name at the door. Their tickets will be waiting for them at the door or dropped off ahead of time," said Sachtleben.

Again, cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Six Seguin student-athletes to sign college letters of intent on Wednesday morning Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- Six Seguin Matador student-athletes will sign college letters of intent on Wednesday morning at the high school.

In football, running back John Jackson, tight end Jackson Pond, defensive back Donovan Cray and offensive lineman Cooper Neumann will officially put pen to paper for their college commitments.

After a record-breaking season in which he established a new Seguin High School singleseason program record with 1786 yards rushing, Jackson was voted the 2023 District 12-5A Offensive MVP to lead Matador

all-district football selections.

Jackson was named Mr. Matador – Team MVP at the annual Seguin football banquet.

Pond earned second team all-district honors as a utility

player. He was also a second team honoree in 2022.

Cray was a 2023 second team selection as a safety. He was named the team’s Defensive MVP at the football banquet.

Neumann was a first team all-district member and collected the Offensive MVP at the team banquet. Neumann played in the 2024 Hawaii Tiki Bowl with teammate Evrin Contreras in January.

In softball, pitchers Kendall Hurt and Madyson Schultze will sign on the line Wednesday morning to announce their college decisions.

Hurt earned District 26-

5A Pitcher of the Year honors in 2023. Hurt lead the Lady Matador one-two punch pitching staff along with Schultze, who was named to the district’s first team.

Hurt and Schultze will be headed to Hawaii later this month.

The Matador softball team is scheduled to compete at the 38th Annual Waimea High School Varsity Softball Tournament February 22nd through the 24th in Kekaha, Hawaii.

The national letter of intent signing will take place Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. at the Seguin High School Student Activity Center Gymnasium.

Ernestine “Tina” Mata peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, at the age of 88. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and other family members. She was born to Secundina and Fernando Paez on November 29th, 1935, in Seguin, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Roy Paez, and her loving husband of 59 years, Alex Mata. Left to cherish and honor her memory are her children; James Mata ( Judy), Alex J. Mata (Chris), Lisa Resendez (Michael) and Karyn Mata, grandchildren; Christina Saenz, Jonathan Mata, Aaron and Ryan Resendez, Elise Mata, Larra Reid, Eric Mata and 10 great-grandchildren.

Tina and Alex married on August 19th, 1956, in Seguin, TX. She was a steadfast military spouse for 23 years while he served in the U.S. Air Force. They spent a lifetime traveling abroad and growing a beautiful family.

Alongside her unwavering support, she found joy in thrift shopping, sewing, and creating beautiful quilts with her friends at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Tina loved to attend Wurstfest with her family and enjoyed dancing to polka music.

Her nurturing spirit extended to caring for her grandchildren, leaving a legacy of love and creativity that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Services honoring Tina will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Mass at 10:30 a.m. A private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Marvin Lee Berry, Jr., age 79, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on February 2, 2024. Marvin was born on October 11, 1944, in Richmond, Virginia, to Lillian Gaynelle (Harding) and Marvin Lee Berry, Sr. He proudly served his country by serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Marvin worked at Motorola for 35 years. He was a longtime member of the First Methodist Church. He and Joyce enjoyed volunteering at the Christian Cupboard for many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lowana Jones, and his brothers-in-law William Goodwin and Gerald Goodwin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joyce Goodwin Berry; his brother David Berry; children, Leandra Berry and spouse Kevin Sheffield, Jarrett Berry and spouse Reene Berry, and John Berry; grandchildren, Kyler Berry, Quinn Sheffield, Sawyer Sheffield; sister-in-law Kathy Yahner; brother-in-law Dale Goodwin; numerous nieces and nephews, many other loving family members and friends.

Holly Harper Goodman, age 73 of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 1, 2024. Holly was born on November 28, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, to Mabel Pearl (Kennedy) Harper Garberick and Harvey Harold Harper.

She retired from Lynwood Building Materials as a credit manager. She will be remembered for showing Paint and Quarter Horses all of her life. Holly loved working with pottery. A favorite place was always the beach where she and Jerry enjoyed fishing.

Holly is preceded in death by her parents, her step-father Bill Garberick, and

her brother Skip Harper.

She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years Jerry Goodman; her son

Willie Mae Hassold Soefje of Seguin, TX passed away to her new heavenly home on Feb 4, 2024 at the age of 100. Willie Mae was born on Dec 15, 1923 in Taft, Texas to Elmer Hassold and Ella Buss Hassold.

Willie Mae lived a full and active life. She married Eugene Soefje in 1946 and they were married for 30 years until his passing in 1976. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Elmer, Ronald and John. She enjoyed raising her family, gardening, canning, farm life, live music and dancing. After being a widow for 22 years, she married Leroy Pfullmann in 1998. They were married for 11 years until his passing. Willie Mae was active in her social clubs; including the New Braunfels Eagles Auxiliary, AARP, the Senior Citizen Center in Seguin, Bunco Club and was a member of Cross Church in Seguin.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Soefje; second husband, Leroy Pflumann; siblings, Lorraine Hassold Bading, Elmer “Ernie” Hassold and James “Jimmy” Hassold; son, Ronald Soefje; daughter in law, Karen Grimm Soefje; granddaughter, Carolyn Timmons and grandson, Nicholas Soefje. In peaceful silence on February 4, 2024, Pleas DeLaney “Bubba” Anderson, age 82, grasped God’s hand leading Him to Heaven. Born on August 27, 1941, to Pleas A. and Zella Mae “Bobbie” Anderson, Bubba made Seguin his lifelong home.

Bubba is preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Raymond and Helen Deorsam.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Marilyn Deorsam Anderson; sons, Beau Anderson and wife Margaret, Travis Anderson and wife Elizabeth, Eric Anderson and wife Amy; grandchildren, Amber De la Garza and husband Daniel, Megan Hale and husband Buddy, Trevor Anderson, Brittany Anderson, Brock Anderson and Bryson Anderson; great-grandchildren, Alana De la Garza, Gabby, Dylan and Colby Hale; sister, Peggy Clingingsmith; sister-in-law Audrey Deorsam Appelt and husband George; nephews, niece, many cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

A product of the Seguin ISD, class of 1959, he was always a proud Matador football player. Bubba was a patriot who loved Texas and his country serving in the U.S. Navy as a Gunners Mate. With Marilyn by his side, they

spent several years owning the Colonial House Restaurant near what was then called by locals “the four corners.” He enjoyed many years selling Buicks and Jeeps at Weyel Buick in Seguin, cherishing the many customers who became true friends.

His life revolved around his children and grandchildren as they were the center of his universe. Many happy memories were made of camping and fishing on the Guadalupe River. He also enjoyed beach trips to Port Aransas where, in earlier years, he lost a lot of tackle on the South Jetty. Attending the extra-curricular activities of his grandchildren was always on his agenda.

Bubba was proud to tell people he had all his sons and their families living somewhere on the family farm.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Silver Center, 510 E. Court St., Seguin.

John Medina Cuellar, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on January 30, 2024.

John was born on November 19, 1936, in Cuero, Texas to Natalia (Medina) and Juan Rivera Cuellar.

He was a graduate of Cuero High School and Southwest Texas State University. During the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country as a gunner’s mate in the United States Navy.

His service included time on the USS Lexington. After his military service and retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Trooper, he worked as a Deputy U. S. Marshall.

His memberships included a lifetime membership of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 245, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8456. He and Frances were active members of the St. James Catholic Church where he was previously also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Nickolas Ryan Cuellar, and his

Health Care Jobs Grew At Fastest Rate In Over Thirty Years (Undated) -- Health care jobs are growing at the fastest rate in over 30 years. According to recent data from Altarum, over 650-thousand health care jobs were added last year. Jobs in outpatient care have increased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but staffing at residential and nursing facilities is still down. Altarum says some of the growth is from replacing workers who left the field because of burnout.

University Of Wisconsin Research Shows MyChart Leading To Burnout In Medical Industry (Madison, WI) -- New data collected by University of Wisconsin Health is saying that burnout by doctors is stemming from more time using healthcare record software. When watching the amount of time doctors spent in Epic Systems’ application, the increase in MyChart messages led to burnout. In the study the amount of time spent by the doctors increased by almost 30 minutes from May of 2019 to March 2023. The MyChart messages allow patients to directly contact their doctor.

Quaker Oats Issues Additional Granola Recalls (New York, NY) -- Quaker Oats is expanding its nationwide recall of its granola bars. This week, the company said its Quaker Chewy Dipps Llama Rama bars have been added to a list of previously recalled products due to potential salmonella contamination. The affected products bear “best before” dates of February 10th or 11th, 2024 and were sold in all 50 states. This is the third recall announcement Quaker has made in the last three months.

Connecticut Cancels Millions In Medical Debt (Hartford, CT) -- Connecticut is the first state to provide relief for health care debt. The state is canceling around 650-million dollars in medical debt for an estimated quarter million residents this year. Governor Ned Lamont said it would free residents of “the cloud” over their heads and give them breathing room to be able to buy a home, pay for an education or start a business. Lamont called medical debt spending residents have “no control over.” He said “it’s not like you overspent. You get hit by a health care calamity.” Those who have medical debt equaling at least five-percent or more of their annual income or who whose household income is less than 125-thousand dollars are eligible.
