Austin shooting claims life of Seguin man (Austin) -- A Seguin man was shot and killed while standing on the stairs of an Austin motel.

Officials with the Austin Police Department say Warnero Young was shot and killed just after midnight

on Thursday, Feb.1 at the Super 8 Motel located in the 4200 block of S. Interstate 35.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect, Rahsaan Dobbins, 41, was reportedly in a

WE E KE ND E D I TI O N state of paranoia when he opened his motel room door and shot Young as he stood there.

Dobbins, who was still holding the gun when officers arrived, is said to have complied with officers' commands and was taken into custody without incident. Officials say the suspect, who was also nude at the time, admitted to police that he did not know the victim.

Dobbins was booked into the Travis County Jail where he faces first degree murder.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Austin Police Department.

Seguin Sunrise Rotary hosting Wild West fundraiser at Big Red Barn Darren Dubn

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Sunrise Rotary Club wants you to take a trip to the Wild West this weekend. The club is hosting its annual fundraiser and Casino Night at the Big Red Barn on Saturday.

Rotarian Kelly Schievelbein says you need to get your tickets

now for the big event.

“It’s going to Saturday the 10th of February at the Big Red Barn which is where all of our previous fundraisers have been and it’s our annual scholarship dinner and dance supporting students in Navarro and Seguin High Schools,” said

Rotarian Dennis Clarkson says there will be food, drinks and entertainment during Saturday night’s event. But he says there will be some other special features that you’ll also want to take part in that night.

Community invited to meet Seguin ISD Superintendent finalist Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) - The community will not have one but two opportunities this week to meet the finalist for Seguin ISD Superintendent. The school district says it is hosting the two meet and greet events to give stakeholders the chance to visit personally with Interim Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil.

The meet and greets are designed as come-and-go events with the first being held on Tuesday, February 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Central Office. The second opportunity will be

hosted at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 8 in the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center.

“The biggest part of it is just we are going to have an auction, a silent auction -- we will have raffles. We will have opportunities to win I think on that thing where they cut the card. “Remember, what we are doing this for is raising scholarships for the kids at Navarro and Seguin High School and remember, we are the ones that started the really unique scholarship that nobody does except us and that is where we give the freshman a scholarship and then that money goes into an account at Edward Jones and grows and as it grows and they stay a good student and when they graduate, they get the full amount,” said Clarkson.

(Seguin) -- In the early morning hours of February 3, 1943, the bell on the USAT Dorchester rang twice, and was never heard again. The ship, a passenger steam ship which had been requisitioned for use during World War II, was in the North Atlantic when the bell tolled. There were 904 on board when a torpedo from a German U-boat struck. Among them were four chaplains.

They came from different religious backgrounds. Lt. Chaplain George L. Fox was Methodist. Lt. Chaplain Alexander D. Goode was a Jewish rabbi. Lt. Chaplain Clark V. Poling served in the Reformed Church. And Lt. Chaplain John P. Washington was Roman Catholic.

When the torpedo hit, the damage was so severe that there wasn't enough steam to sound the abandon ship signal or even to radio a distress signal. Some of the lifeboats didn't launch, while others capsized because of overcrowding. The ship was sinking fast, and anyone left on board would be sucked under with it. Keep in mind that the waters of the Labrador Sea off the coast of Greenland in February are bitterly cold, as is the air. Life expectancy for one floating in those waters would be around twenty minutes, and the only hope for even that was a life vest or lifeboat.

But according to survivors of the attack, the four chaplains remained calm, sacrificed their own safety to save the lives of other men, and even gave up their life jackets to others who needed them. As the ship slipped beneath the icy waves, the four could be seen, arms linked, heads bowed, singing. Whatever differences in religion they might've had were nothing compared to the common fate and faith they shared at that moment.

The ship was lost within about twenty minutes of the torpedo strike, and of the 904 souls on board, only 209 survived, many almost frozen stiff as they were rescued.

The memory of those four brave chaplains-of their courage and great love-lives on.

On February 2nd, TLU's Blumberg Memorial Library held remembrance ceremony commemorating Four Chaplains Day. Jorge Alberto Nandin, a veteran of the US Army and a Veterans Service Assistant, spoke about the enduring importance of military chaplains. “Our chaplains stand as a symbol of hope on the battlefield-a steadfast reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is a beacon of light guiding our troops through the storm.”

Pastor Wes Cain closed the ceremony with a prayer.

“We go remembering those who served. We go recognizing their sacrifice. And we go trying to do the same giving of ourselves for others in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

The Four Chaplains display can be viewed in the military museum portion of the gallery on the first floor of Blumberg Memorial Library. It includes a selection of books, artifacts, and a reproduction of a section of a stained glass window which commemorates the courage of the four chaplains. SEGUIN, Texas -- #RV Texas Lutheran Baseball hammered Sul Ross State, 20-7, to secure the Opening Weekend sweep with a run-rule win on Sunday at KattIsbel Field. The Bulldogs sweep Opening Weekend for the first time since 2019.

The Bulldogs (3-0) will travel to Austin next weekend to participate in the CTX Classic hosted by Concordia University starting Friday, Feb. 9 against Hardin-Simmons at 11 AM followed by a 6 PM first pitch against Concordia (TX) Friday night at Tornado Field. JT Taylor (Conroe/Fort Bend Christian) pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits to pick up the win. He struck out six batters, matching a career-high, and allowed one walk.

A two RBI double from Chase Bourgeois (Liberty/Clear Falls) gave the Bulldogs an early 2-1 first inning lead.

A hit by pitch, single, and walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs in the second inning before an Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/ Brandeis) hit by pitch brought in a run. With the bases still loaded, Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam for his second home run in as

many days to blow the game open.

Marvin Lee Berry, Jr., age 79, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on February 2, 2024. Marvin was born on October 11, 1944, in Richmond, Virginia, to Lillian Gaynelle (Harding) and Marvin Lee Berry, Sr. He proudly served his country by serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Marvin worked at Motorola for 35 years. He was a longtime member of the First Methodist Church. He and Joyce enjoyed volunteering at the Christian Cupboard for many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lowana Jones, and his brothers-in-law William Goodwin

Holly Harper Goodman, age 73 of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 1, 2024. Holly was born on November 28, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, to Mabel Pearl (Kennedy) Harper Garberick and Harvey Harold Harper.

She retired from Lynwood Building Materials as a credit manager. She will be remembered for showing Paint and Quarter Horses all of her life. Holly loved working with pottery. A favorite place was always the beach where she and Jerry enjoyed fishing.

Holly is preceded in death by her parents, her step-father Bill Garberick, and

her brother Skip Harper.

She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years Jerry Goodman; her son

John Medina Cuellar, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on January 30, 2024.

John was born on November 19, 1936, in Cuero, Texas to Natalia (Medina) and Juan Rivera Cuellar.

He was a graduate of Cuero High School and Southwest Texas State University. During the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country as a gunner’s mate in the United States Navy.

His service included time on the USS Lexington. After his military service and retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Trooper, he worked as a Deputy U. S. Marshall.

His memberships included a lifetime membership of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 245, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8456. He and Frances were active members of the St. James Catholic Church where he was previously also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Nickolas Ryan Cuellar, and his

In peaceful silence on February 4, 2024, Pleas DeLaney “Bubba” Anderson, age 82, grasped God’s hand leading Him to Heaven. Born on August 27, 1941, to Pleas A. and Zella Mae “Bobbie” Anderson, Bubba made Seguin his lifelong home.

Bubba is preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Raymond and Helen Deorsam.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Marilyn Deorsam Anderson; sons, Beau Anderson and wife Margaret, Travis Anderson and wife Elizabeth, Eric Anderson and wife Amy; grandchildren, Amber De la Garza and husband Daniel, Megan Hale and husband Buddy, Trevor Anderson, Brittany Anderson, Brock Anderson and Bryson Anderson; great-grandchildren, Alana De la Garza, Gabby, Dylan and Colby Hale; sister, Peggy Clingingsmith; sister-in-law Audrey Deorsam Appelt and husband George; nephews, niece, many cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

spent several years owning the Colonial House Restaurant near what was then called by locals “the four corners.” He enjoyed many years selling Buicks and Jeeps at Weyel Buick in Seguin, cherishing the many customers who became true friends.

His life revolved around his children and grandchildren as they were the center of his universe. Many happy memories were made of camping and fishing on the Guadalupe River. He also enjoyed beach trips to Port Aransas where, in earlier years, he lost a lot of tackle on the South Jetty. Attending the extra-curricular activities of his grandchildren was always on his agenda.

Bubba was proud to tell people he had all his sons and their families living somewhere on the family farm.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Willie Mae Hassold Soefje of Seguin, TX passed away to her new heavenly home on Feb 4, 2024 at the age of 100. Willie Mae was born on Dec 15, 1923 in Taft, Texas to Elmer Hassold and Ella Buss Hassold.

Willie Mae enjoyed gardening, canning, farm life, live music and dancing. She was active in her social clubs and was a member of Cross Church in Seguin.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Soefje, second husband, Leroy Pflumann; son Ronald Soefje; granddaughter, Carolyn Timmons and grandson, Nicholas Soefje. Survivors include sons, Elmer Soefje and John Soefje; grandchildren, Aaron Soefje, Kenneth Soefje, Theresa Mae McKnight, Kassie Johnson, Jillian James and 18 great grandchildren.

Ernestine “Tina” Mata peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, at the age of 88. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and other family members. She was born to Secundina and Fernando Paez on November 29th, 1935, in Seguin, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Roy Paez, and her loving husband of 59 years, Alex Mata. Left to cherish and honor her memory are her children; James Mata ( Judy), Alex J. Mata (Chris), Lisa Resendez (Michael) and Karyn Mata, grandchildren; Christina Saenz, Jonathan Mata, Aaron and Ryan Resendez, Elise Mata, Larra Reid, Eric Mata and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is further survived by her siblings; Margarita Castellanos, Victoria Higle, Fernando Paez Jr., Gloria Garner, Phillip Paez and numerous nieces, nephews

extended family and friends. Tina did not know a stranger and made friends anywhere she went.

Tina and Alex married on August 19th, 1956, in Seguin, TX. She was a steadfast military spouse for 23 years while he served in the U.S. Air Force. They spent a lifetime traveling abroad and growing a beautiful family.

Alongside her unwavering support, she found joy in thrift shopping, sewing, and creating beautiful quilts with her friends at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Tina loved to attend Wurstfest with her family and enjoyed dancing to polka music.

Her nurturing spirit extended to caring for her grandchildren, leaving a legacy of love and creativity that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Services honoring Tina will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Mass at 10:30 a.m. A private burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

CDC: Premature Birth Rate Up 12% (Atlanta, GA) -- The premature birth rate in the U.S. has risen 12 percent in the past ten years. New data released by the CDC this week also showed that early-term birth rates were up, rising 20 percent from 2014 to 2022. Experts say several factors may be causing earlier births, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and complications associated with obesity.

Toxicology Reports Of Three Men Found Dead In Backyard Shows Fentanyl (Kansas City, MO) -- The three men found dead and frozen at a Kansas City Chiefs watch party had three times the lethal amount of fentanyl along with cocaine and THC. That’s according to toxicology reports released this week. They were discovered at their friend Jordan Willis’ Kansas City home in his backyard on January 9th -- two days after the game. Willis claimed he went to bed and had no idea his friends were in his backyard. Willis, an HIV scientist, has since checked himself into rehab. He has not been charged as the investigation continues.

Over 120 Cruise Ship Passengers Become Ill (Undated) -- Over 120 passengers and crew aboard a Queen Victoria cruise ship have become sick in recent weeks with a gastrointestinal illness. The CDC reported Thursday that the ship, which departed January 22nd from Florida, is set to head to Aruba, Guatemala, Cabo San Lucas, San Francisco and Hawaii before it ends on February 12th. The ship has over 18-hundred passengers and 950 crew members. The cause is unknown, but the cases are for the entire trip and not an active total.

Engineering Firm Settles Lawsuit Related To Flint Water Crisis (Flint, MI) -- An agreement has been reached between an engineering firm and residents of Flint, Michigan who filed a class action lawsuit against the company. Veolia [[VEE-oh-LEE-uh]] North America has agreed to pay 25-million dollars to settle the case weeks before a trial was to begin.

The company consulted city officials on the quality of the water after the switch was made to the Flint River. They recommended the city use corrosion control to prevent lead from getting into the water. However, plaintiffs said the company failed to warn of corroding water pipes which they claim extended the contamination. Veolia did not admit to any wrongdoing and said the blame for the Flint Water Crisis should be directed at government officials.
