Accident reported at dangerous intersection

Commissioner shakes head at lack of urgency by TxDOT Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Guadalupe County) -- The intersection of FM 1044 and FM 78 east of Marion has reported yet another accident.

This latest accident comes just eight days after the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court approved a resolution urging that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) seriously consider moving up its plan to install a traffic-control

signal at FM 1044 and FM 78 just east of Marion.

Just before 4:56 p.m. Wednesday, a truck tractor-trailer crossing over the tracks into the intersection was struck by a train. Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s officials say the Texas Highway Patrol investigated the crash. Although no one was injured during the accident, officials had the area closed off up until midnight. Caregiver Cafe now open for business Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- A new initiative is working to provide care for all the caregivers in this community.

The Caregiver Cafe is a joint effort between GRMC, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church and Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.

Pam Sagebiel of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church is helping to coordinate the Caregiver Cafe.

She says the Caregiver Cafe is really designed to provide support for anyone who provides care for someone else.

She says they’ve been discussing this idea for some time, and now they are officially ready to launch this new support group.

“We started talking and gathering resources and gathering people and decided to do a joint ministry with Emanuel’s and Spirit of Joy to offer what we finally came up with as the Caregiver Café. We wanted something that didn’t turn people off like a support group or whatever. It’s hard for people to get over the name of that. But we thought, Caregiver Café. Invite people over for a cup of coffee and some refreshments and just chat,” said Sagebiel.

Gina Touchstone, a yoga and mindfulness instructor, will work with

those who show up for the Caregiver Cafe.

Sagebiel says they’ll be providing some tips on how caregivers can care for themselves while giving so much to someone else.

Sagebiel says yoga and mindfulness tips are just one part of the Caregiver Cafe.

Ultimately, she says it will be much more than that.

“It has evolved into bringing in guest speakers and one branch of this while Gina is here is she is very good with relaxation and stress relieving techniques and so on. So, she is going to be providing some just meditation and relaxation for the caregivers because we know that is something that they probably desperately need and they can learn to use on their own whether they are in the caregiver setting or just a way to try to get some sleep at night,” said Sagebiel.

Touchstone says you don’t have to have any experience with these yoga or mindfulness techniques to benefit.

She says they simply want to offer some suggestions on how to provide better care for yourself, which will ultimately help you better care for others.

“I just want them to know that we are offering a safe place for them to come and just let it out. If they have anxieties or any kind of tension, if they need to talk to somebody in the same situation, that we are there. It’s not going to go anywhere. Everything stays there amongst the group, so we just have that safe place for them to come and be cared about. Let us care for them like they are caring for someone they love,” said Touchstone.

Donna Simmons is the Bereavement Care Coordinator for Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, and she says it’s essential for people to come, whether they consider themselves caregivers or not.

She says the Caregiver Cafe could benefit just about anyone who spends time helping others.

“I hope they really think about it and think about whether they are a caregiver or not. There are many people out there that don’t even realize that they are in that caregiver mode, and they are, but I’d like for them to come and try. Get together with us. Come to Spirit of Joy. Come to Emanuel’s and come and try it. Don’t just stay away because you are not sure. Cafe, pg. 3

Regional economic partners unite to host Winter Regional Job Fair 2024 (New Braunfels) – It’s back to hiring and making sure those job vacancies are filled in not only Seguin but surrounding cities. The Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, Seguin Economic Development Corporation, Schertz Economic Development Corporation and the Cibolo Economic Development Corporation will again be hosting the first Regional Job Fair of 2024.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday at McKenna Event Center located at 801 W. San Antonio St. in New Braunfels.

Mike Crowley, the director of workforce and industry development for the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce extends the invitation to everyone. He says a total of 50 employers from Cibolo, New Braunfels, Schertz, and Seguin will be on hand during Tuesday’s job fair.

“We are excited to invite career seekers to join us at the first Regional Job Fair of 2024. This event is a true testament to the unity and dedication of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, Seguin EDC, Schertz EDC, and Cibolo EDC as we come together to foster economic growth for our collective communities.

It will be held at 9 a.m. every first Thursday of the month at Spirit of Joy. It will move to the afternoons on the third Sunday of each month and be held at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.

The first meeting at Emanuel’s will occur at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 18.

Emanuel’s is located on Travis Street in downtown Seguin.

These are free informal gatherings and coffee and refreshments will be served.

another collision 16 days after the last one, and someone is going to get killed,” said Germann.

Germann says even after this latest wreck, TxDOT notified his office that it was not budging and was sticking to its timeline for installing a

traffic light.

“The crash query that I have for the last two years prior to this is 49 wrecks in two years. So, we are staying on that pace. I got an email this morning (Thursday) that TxDOT is going to stay on their pace. One study alone is six months. Someone is going to get killed. Just for one part of the study is six months. That is not putting the signals up.

That’s not buying the equipment. That is just part of their study alone is six months – another year at least. One year is 25 wrecks,” said Germann.

Germann says even he himself works to avoid that intersection and cringes just driving through that roadway.

“It disrupted the traffic movement. It disrupted Union Pacific, the work they needed to do because they had to split the train in the middle and the train sat there until they could clear the crash site. So, it’s costing everyone a lot of money.

If a business was run the way that this is being handled, that business would be out of business,” said Germann.

In addition to approving a resolution, the county forwarded a petition to state leaders that included 1,000 signatures from residents who also want to see the project expedited.

Dangerous, continued.

Again, angered by this crash is Commissioner Pct. 4 Stephen Germann. Prior to voting on the resolution on January 23, Germann stated, “It’s unfathomable what is going on in this intersection.

We are having a collision right now every two weeks. Most of the time, they are a three-car collision. A few years ago, two people were killed.

I’ve been told by TxDOT these things take time. I told TxDOT, the person dying in their car just ran out of time.”

Immediately following the accident, Germann says he went out to the scene. He says it’s just heartbreaking that TxDOT is not prioritizing this need.

“I got the word from Harvey Faulkner, the constable because he has been calling me, and my initial thought when I drove up, all the first responders looked at me and said, ‘please help us,’ and I said I am trying. I am losing my patience real fast. The first thing I thought when I drove down the road was I saw the locomotive on the tracks and I thought well there’s a train engine here that just hit someone and that has to be traumatic for him. But in talking to people, I’m like, this is just

The Bulldogs, who were held without a hit through 5.2 innings, fell behind 1-0 after allowing an unearned run in the fourth inning following a TLU fielding error.

The Bulldogs offense came alive in the sixth inning after a one out walk to Tyler Post (San

Antonio/Johnson) and a failed pick off attempt moved him to third, Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) recorded the first hit of the TLU baseball season with an infield single to the shortstop to tie the game, 1-1.

That was all it took to get the TLU offense rolling as R.J. Carrillo and Xavier Arias (La Vernia/NixonSmiley) followed with RBI singles of their own as TLU took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning.

TLU scored three more runs in the seventh courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Post and Peavy’s two-run home run.

The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the eighth inning to go up 8-1 when Asher Bonnell

hit a two-out single to right center field to drive in Carrillo.

Marvin Lee Berry, Jr., age 79, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on February 2, 2024. Marvin was born on October 11, 1944, in Richmond, Virginia, to Lillian Gaynelle (Harding) and Marvin Lee Berry, Sr. He proudly served his country by serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Marvin worked at Motorola for 35 years. He was a longtime member of the First Methodist Church. He and Joyce enjoyed volunteering at the Christian Cupboard for many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lowana Jones, and his brothers-in-law William Goodwin

Holly Harper Goodman, age 73 of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 1, 2024. Holly was born on November 28, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, to Mabel Pearl (Kennedy) Harper Garberick and Harvey Harold Harper.

She retired from Lynwood Building Materials as a credit manager. She will be remembered for showing Paint and Quarter Horses all of her life. Holly loved working with pottery. A favorite place was always the beach where she and Jerry enjoyed fishing.

Holly is preceded in death by her parents, her step-father Bill Garberick, and

She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years Jerry Goodman; her son

John Medina Cuellar, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on January 30, 2024.

John was born on November 19, 1936, in Cuero, Texas to Natalia (Medina) and Juan Rivera Cuellar.

He was a graduate of Cuero High School and Southwest Texas State University. During the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country as a gunner’s mate in the United States Navy.

His service included time on the USS Lexington. After his military service and retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Trooper, he worked as a Deputy U. S. Marshall.

His memberships included a lifetime membership of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 245, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8456. He and Frances were active members of the St. James Catholic Church where he was previously also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Nickolas Ryan Cuellar, and his

Biden Admin Offers Proposed Prices On 10 Common Medicare Drugs (Washington, DC) -- The Biden Administration is submitting proposed prices for ten drugs under Medicare, negotiations the White House says will lower costs. The list includes everything from medicine for blood clots and diabetes to heart failure and rheumatoid arthritis. The drugs on the list are among the most purchased. Drugmakers now have 30 days to respond to the prices, which they can accept or make a counteroffer.

Americans Now Have An Obesity Bill Of Rights (Washington, DC) -- Americans now have an Obesity Bill of Rights. That announcement comes from the National Consumers League and the National Council on Aging. It establishes eight essential rights to ensure that people who are obese get screened, diagnosed, counseled and treated according to medical guidelines. The move comes ten years after the American Medical Association classified obesity, which affects more than one-hundred-million Americans, as a chronic disease requiring comprehensive care. Other goals include battling bias, weight discrimination and exclusionary coverage policies by insurance companies.

Tri-Government Fentanyl State Of Emergency (Portland, OR) -- The City of Portland is declaring a 90-day state of emergency to address the fentanyl crisis. The State of Oregon and Multnomah County also declared an emergency yesterday. A command center will be set up in Portland to coordinate the response. The Health Department will launch two public education campaigns, the County will increase outreach, and the City will provide public safety, addiction and public health services. The emergency orders will allow the three governments to work faster to develop solutions to the drug crisis.

Zuckerberg Apologizes To Parents (Washington, DC) -- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized directly to the parents of children who were harmed by social media during a Senate hearing about online child safety Wednesday. The moment occurred while Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri called on Zuckerberg to apologize to the families sitting directly behind him. Zuckerberg then stood up, turned around, and addressed the parents and said in part “I’m sorry for everything you have all been through,” and added his company is working on “efforts to make sure no one has to go through the things your families have had to suffer.”
