TLU, Texas Theatre collaborating on production of award-winning play “Wit” Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A Pulitzer Prize winning play comes to the Texas Theatre for several shows this weekend. The drama “Wit,” written

by Margaret Edson, is being presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the historic theater in downtown Seguin.

The production is a collaboration between dramatic media students from Texas Lutheran University and some well known actors from past performances at the Texas Theatre.

“Wit” is the winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It also earned the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, and the Oppenheimer Award. It was adapted into an Emmy Award-winning television movie, directed by Mike Nichols and starring

Emma Thompson. It tackles timeless questions, like living and dying. It’s the story about a brilliant professor, who has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. The role is portrayed by local actress Mary Jane Windle.

Will Hicks, a dramatic media student at TLU and the director of the show, says Windle does an amazing job bringing this character to life. He says it’s a compelling performance, that is sure to connect with the audience.

“It just really makes you think about what is happening, and what you want your legacy to be. When you watch it, you really start thinking about your own life, your own mortality, and what do you want to be remembered as.

Road construction calls for daytime lane closure; motorists being warned

(Seguin) – If much of your day travel is on the city’s west side, then you might want to take note of a few closures for the next few days.

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 6, the westbound outside

lane of I-10, between mile markers 603 and 604, will be closed for concrete barrier repairs.

FM 725 under I-10 will also be closed. Southbound traffic on FM 725 will travel

east on I-10 to SH 46 and make a U-turn to travel westbound on I-10 to FM 725. Northbound traffic on FM 725 will travel east on I-10 to SH 46 to use the turnaround.

I don’t want to give away too much of the play, but her whole struggle was that she wanted to be remembered for her studies and for her research -- lived through that culture. But instead, she’s now being remembered for her dying -- for her own death. So, (it explores) …how much you can control your own life, and how much you’re willing to give up to make your own legacy,” said Hicks.

Hallie Strange is a dramatic media student at TLU and serves as the show’s technical director. She says this is an incredible story. It may not be the feel-good story that some audiences might be used to, but she says it will leave an impact on all those who come to see the show.

“It really makes you think about, not only your connections with yourself, but connections with other people. I think...a really, really important part of this show is relationships between people, and

unexpected friendships, and how other people perceive you is a really important part of this story. How you perceive yourself is (also) a big part of it. It makes you reflect a lot on that part of life. And while going into it, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to make you happy. You’re not going to leave this theater feeling super happy, but you’re going to leave this theater with a different perspective on other people and on people who may come across as more callous or more angry.

And I think that’s really beautiful,” said Strange.

(Seguin) -- February has arrived and with it, TLU’s annual celebration of Black History Month.

All month long, there will be special events which highlight and honor the cultural heritage, achievements, and triumphs of African Americans throughout history, and which encourage meaningful conversations as the journey for racial justice continues.

“I'm excited that TLU, as an institution, is coming together to celebrate Black History Month—our Brown Cultural Enrichment Series, Campus Ministry, the Center for African American Studies, and the Black Student Union are all bringing their unique events, talents, and perspectives to the table,” says Dr. Lauren Shook, professor of English and faculty advisor to TLU’s BSU. Every Wednesday in February, Chapel services will reflect the celebration, with the Black Student Union leading the initial service on February 7.

“I always look forward to Chapel during Black History Month,” says Trinity Murdoch, president of the BSU. She says February services will have a Baptist worship flair in the service style, lectionary, and music.

“It’s so fun to combine different forms of Christianity and come together as one.” Pastor Lee Martin will be speaking at the February 7 service.

Other special guest speakers on tap for the month include Director of the Center for African American

Studies Dr. Reverend Sharon Grant and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Malikah Pitts Harvey. Services are from 10:00 to 10:20 a.m. in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence.

On February 9, the University is thrilled to welcome Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu, daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a race and gender activist. Reverend Tutu will be presenting One Body, One Family, One World, a talk in which she will share her experiences growing up as a Black female during apartheid in South Africa—and how that time in history, fraught with conflict and separation, would lead to the banding together of people all over the world with the common prayer of freedom for the oppressed.

Reverend Tutu’s talk, which will take place in Jackson Auditorium, begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a meet-and-greet at 8 p.m. The event is part of the Brown Cultural Enrichment Series and is free and

open to the public. A live stream will be available for those who can’t attend in person.

On February 12, the Black Student Union will be hosting a S’mores and Solidarity event. Check the tlubsu Instagram page for updates on this and other events. The BSU welcomes all students, so those interested in joining are encouraged to attend or get in touch.

“I have loved seeing the community-building and uplifting, fun environment that BSU is fostering within its organization, around campus, and in the larger Seguin community,” says Shook. Murdoch says regular meetings take place at 8:00 in the ASC every Monday evening, and in addition the group hosts a special event each month.

On February 15, the University’s Center for African American Studies is hosting an open house from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Langner Hall. Then on February 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dr. Mario Salas will speak in Tschoepe Hall’s Dunne Conference Center. Dr. Salas, a writer, civil rights leader, and educator, is author of the book, The Alamo: A Cradle of Lies, Slavery, and White Supremacy.

On February 22, the BSU will host a fun celebration, Blame It on the Boogie. And the month will be capped off on the 28th with a special Soul Food Night in Hein Dining Hall. More details for all of these events can be found at the tlubsu Instagram page.

Seguin, Navarro and Marion learn new district foes with UIL realignment Chris Austin

(Austin) -- Area high schools now know their district foes in football, basketball and volleyball for the next two years following UIL realignment announcements this morning.

Seguin, Navarro and Marion are staying in their current classes and divisions. Seguin competes in 5A Division-I for football. Navarro is 4A DivisionII, and Marion is 3A Division-I. Districts are realigned every two years based on updated school enrollments. The realignments will take effect starting with the Fall 2024 semester.

Jeanne Reavis, age 89 of Seguin, formerly of McAllen and Kerrville, passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2024. Jeanne was born on August 28, 1934 in McCook, Texas to Magdalena (Labus) and Izydor Gawlik.

Jeanne will be remembered working at McAllen State Bank from 1967 to 1988. She loved collecting birds, painting, sewing and baking.

Jeanne is preceded in death by her husbands, Rufus Maness and J. D. Reavis, her siblings, Ed, Sam and Jan Gawlik, and Tracy Martin, Trudy Powell, Sallie Keck, Lottie Wolfe, and

Bernice Jeffreys.

Survivors include her children, Rhonda Mercer and husband Mike, Annette Welker, Mark Curry and wife Cindy, and Shari Shepard; sister, Alice Perry; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Deacon Nick Carrillo officiating.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission Texas.

Earl Graham Bishop, 88, left this world for eternal glory on Friday, January 26, 2024. He was born April 23, 1935 to Soloman Pierce Bishop and Ina Mae Mobley Bishop in Smiley, TX. His family and friends from his childhood lovingly call him “E.G.” In 1960, he married the love of his life, Linda Carol Streety Bishop, and they had three daughters that they adored, Carol, Lisa, and LeeAnn. Earl is best known for his faithfulness to his Heavenly Father; his love and devotion to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren; and his kindness, generosity and service to his church and community.

Earl attended school in Smiley, TX, and graduated in 1952. He loved his country, and joined the US Air Force in 1955. While in the Air Force he was assigned to England and Germany, and enjoyed meeting up with his brother, Virgil, who was serving in the US Army. After leaving the Air Force, he attended Durham Technical School in San Antonio, TX and was employed at Medina AFB as an aircraft mechanic.

Earl and Linda resided in San Antonio until Earl went to work for Brown & Root at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Houston where he worked in the testing and simulation lab, including SpaceCraft and the Lunar Rover. Later, he worked with instrumentation at Amoco Chemical and Oil Company and EPIC in the Houston and Galveston areas.

They made their home in League City, TX and were active members of the First Baptist Church (now Bay Area Church). Earl was ordained as a deacon and had a combined service of more than 50 years at churches in League City and Smiley. In League City, he also served as a Sunday School Teacher and with the bus ministry, which was committed to bringing unchurched children to church on Sundays. He loved helping people in the community, especially children and the elderly, and did so quietly and often anonymously. He was actively involved with the Bay Area Christian School where his daughters attended. He also enjoyed going on mission trips; his favorite was to Costa Rica.

In 1997, Earl retired and he and Linda moved back to Smiley, TX. He and his brothers renovated Linda’s family home where they settled into life in the country. They were busier than ever and spent their time seeing their grandchildren, caring for their aging mothers, serving at the First Baptist Church in Smiley, and volunteering with the Texas Baptist Men with Disaster Relief. Earl and Linda also traveled across the United States in their RV and enjoyed seeing the country and camping with friends, family, and their grandchildren. More than anything, they loved being near to their six grandchildren, their pride and joy, and attended many athletic events, dances performances, recitals, church programs, baptisms, and graduations.

Earl leaves a legacy of devotion to his family and service to God and his community.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Linda Carol Streety Bishop; his parents, Solomon and Ina Bishop; his infant son, Earl Graham Bishop, Jr.; son-in-law, Dr. David Jimenez; sister-in-law, Betty Bishop; brother and sister-in-law, Elder and Gracie Bishop; and his brothers-inlaw, William Duncan and Philip Streety.

He is survived by his daughters, Carol Pierce and husband, Billy, of San Antonio; Lisa Jimenez, of El Paso; LeeAnn Dunn and husband, Darren, of Seguin; grandchildren Everett Pierce, Ellis Pierce, Ethan Pierce and wife, Sarah, Julia Beebe, Carter Dunn, and Addison Dunn; siblings Howard Bishop (Francis), Viola Duncan, Virgil Bishop, Irene Gaylord (Tommy); brother-in-law, Jim Streety ( Janie); sister in law, Jackie Streety; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m.

Terrill Allen Lewis Jr. died January 20, 2024 at the age of 31. Funeral services, for Terrill Allen Lewis Jr., will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Greater Second Baptist Church in Seguin. Interment will follow at the Capote Cemetery. He is survived by his father, Terrill Lewis Sr.; step-mother, Annette Lewis; maternal grandmother,Velma Marie Clark; sisters, Ashley Brittany Griffin, Ashlynne Breanna Clark, Tia Lewis, Barbara Brunney, and Olivia White; brothers, Tyqueron Malik Adgers, Falanzo Townes, and Angel Macumba; and aunts, Ester Marie Mims and Pamela Campbell. McFarland

Renee McFarland, age 77 of Kingsbury, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully on January 28, 2024, at home surrounded by her family and friends after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

She was born in Rocksprings, Texas on January 26, 1947, where she spent her early years living on a ranch managed by her father. The family then moved to Del Rio, Texas where she attended elementary school, and junior high school, and graduated from Del Rio High School class of 1964. She then attended San Angelo Junior College for a year before transferring to Sam Houston State University, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1968.

She married Jim McFarland in the summer of 1968 and worked in College Station while Jim was finishing his degree from Texas A&M University. They moved numerous times as Jim was in the oil and natural gas business living in Fritch, Texas, Lovington, New Mexico, Midland, Texas, Houston Texas and finally Kingsbury, Texas. Later in life, Renee attended Prairie View A&M and received her teaching certificate. She enjoyed teaching at Vogel and Mary B. Erskine Elementary Schools in the Seguin

Matalik

Katherine Lynn “Kathy” Fealy Matalik, age 74 of Seguin, passed away on January 11, 2024. Kathy was born on December 20, 1949 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Doris Jane (Manak) and Michael Joseph Fealy. She was raised in Kingsville and attended Texas A & I in Kingsville (now A & M) receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.

After living in Key West with her former husband while he served in the military, they returned to Texas and settled in Seguin in 1978. Kathy was a beloved middle school science teacher and librarian at St. James Catholic School for many years. She loved her St. James Catholic Church, her Church Family and teaching. Music was a favorite of hers and it shined through as she served as the church organist, taught piano and served as an active choir member. Kathy also was a member of the St. Ann’s Circle at St. James.

After retirement from St. James Catholic School, Kathy pursued an

Independent School District, where she made many lifelong friendships with the teachers, administrators, and staff of each school. Along the way, she gave birth to two sons Jason and Jeremy.

She was preceded in death by her parents Russel Reams and Lucille Cowsert Reams of Belmont, Texas, and brother Rusty Reams of Belmont, Texas.

She is survived by her husband Jim of Kingsbury, Texas, son Jason and wife Michelle and two granddaughters Ainslee and Maddie of Tomball, Texas, son Jeremy and wife Amy, grandsons Jonah and Wyatt, and granddaughters Chloe and Molly of Houston, Texas, brother-in-law Jack McFarland and wife Dana of Houston, Texas, sister-in-law Marcy White McFarland of San Antonio, Texas, sister-in-law Charlene Reams Manning of Georgetown, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church Seguin, Texas on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nick Hart and the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

John Medina Cuellar, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on January 30, 2024.

John was born on November 19, 1936, in Cuero, Texas to Natalia (Medina) and Juan Rivera Cuellar.

He was a graduate of Cuero High School and Southwest Texas State University. During the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country as a gunner’s mate in the United States Navy.

His service included time on the USS Lexington. After his military service and retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Trooper, he worked as a Deputy U. S. Marshall.

His memberships included a lifetime membership of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 245, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8456. He and Frances were active members of the St. James Catholic Church where he was previously also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Nickolas Ryan Cuellar, and his

CDC Warns Of Syphilis Resurgence With Highest Caseload Since 1950 (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning of a syphilis resurgence nationwide with the highest number of cases since 1950. The CDC says more than 207-thousand syphilis cases were reported in the U.S. in 2022, an 80-percent increase since 2018, which continues a decades-long trend.

Blacks and Native Americans are the most impacted groups. A disproportionate number of cases are among men who have sex with men but a quarter of the cases are now being diagnosed in women. Social Media CEOs Faced Senate Hearing About Child Exploitation (Washington, DC) -- The CEOs of five of the top social media companies are grilled by the U.S. Senate about child exploitation on their platforms.

Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, and Linda Yaccarino of X, formerly known as Twitter, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. The heads of TikTok, Snap and Discord were also subpoenaed. They were accused of filling children’s feeds with posts promoting eating disorders, suicide, drug use or sexual abuse. The social media companies all said they’re committed to safety and are using new tools to enforce their zero tolerance policy for child exploitation.

France Takes Step To Constitutionalize Abortion Rights (Paris) -- France is on its way to constitutionalizing abortion rights. The French National Assembly passed a bill that would move the nation a step closer to doing so. The country made the issue a priority after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. If France pushes this bill into becoming law, it will be the first country in the world to have abortion rights in its constitution. France’s current legal window for abortion access extends to the 14th week of pregnancy.

X Followers Tell Elmo They Are Stressed, Depressed (New York, NY) -- An online question by a Sesame Street muppet is shedding some light on the amount of stress that’s currently in the U.S. On Monday, the X account for Elmo wrote, “Just checking in -- how is everybody doing?” Unexpectedly, the post got thousands of responses from followers who told Elmo they were depressed and anxious, including from people who had just lost their jobs or who were worried about the upcoming presidential election.
