(Seguin) -- Coaches, district officials, fans, parents, and studentathletes all gathered Wednesday morning for the groundbreaking on a brand new baseball and softball complex at Seguin High School.

The new complex will replace an aging softball field at the high school and will allow the Seguin baseball team to move their games from Smokey Joe Williams Field

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is not the only one celebrating the start of construction for the high school's new baseball and softball complex. Among those on hand for Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony were Bill Keller, Seguin City Councilman and Jack Jones, the Seguin parks and recreation director.

According to Keller, the construction of the new voter approved athletic facility is a win for the entire Seguin Community.

"I think it will impact the city in that we will be able to attract other events, other playoff games and things of that sort. It will be one of the topnotch facilities. There are going to be a lot of teams from around the area that will want to come to play here.

“We’ll be able to host tournaments as much as we want. As soon we get this built, I’m sure we will have every playoff weekend in baseball and softball season booked up from Thursday through Saturday night as much as we want to work,” Dailey said. “And then in the summer, we’ll be able to host from eight-and-under up to 18-and-under tournaments. So, it will be awesome for our community to bring in those teams and they’ll be able to see what Seguin is about.”

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Dailey told the gathered crowd that the complex will allow Seguin ISD students to train year-round at a facility he says will be one of the best in the region. Board members along with Dailey also thanked the voters of the community during

the ceremony for providing students with the resources and opportunities to improve themselves.

The baseball and softball complex will be built along College Street and will feature shared amenities, like restrooms and concessions. The complex is projected to be finished in the Fall of this year, although Dailey says teams could practice on the FieldTurf surfaces after they are laid down this Spring. In the meantime, the Seguin softball team will play their games at the Fields at Huber Ranch while the baseball team will continue to play at Smokey Joe Williams Field.

Play at the new complex will begin with the 2025 season and after Wednesday’s groundbreaking, Seguin baseball coach Michael Gonzales says he is excited about the future for his students.“It’s a good day all-around for the program and I’m glad these kids are finally getting what they deserve.”

That will help the entire city as far as restaurants and hotels and ancillary industries that we have," said Keller.

He says the new state of the art attraction only adds to the city's strengths and values.

"They are going to see Seguin and what we have here and see that it is good and it's going to change our lives for sure," said Keller.

For the last several years, Seguin High School Matador baseball games have been played at the historic Smokey Joe Williams Field located at the Seguin Events Complex. The stadium is named after Joseph Williams, an American pitcher who played in the Negro leagues.

Williams "is considered one of the greatest pitchers of all-time and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.”

Jones says he appreciates the partnership with the school district over the years and looks forward to the future of the program.

"I'll add that Smokey Joe has been around for a long time and it just needs a lot of TLC and the Seguin kids go play in other stadiums and it's all turf. It's brand new.

So, I think it’s really going to up the level of competition.

I think you are going to see baseball and softball -- a good program now -- I think it's going to elevate it to where you can compete for district championships going forward," said Jones.

He says both baseball and softball deserve this new attention and looks forward to continuing a new type of partnership with the Seguin ISD. "Going back several years now, the school district and the city have this great relationship of working together and partnering wherever we can to benefit SISD kids and the community. So that partnership will continue. I believe that the school district can have tournaments. If they want to have a bigger tournament, they can use Smokey Joe and bring more people into town, to shop and to eat and to play and so it's just another facility that adds to public facilities whether it's the Seguin ISD or the city of Seguin to utilize, to bring

people to this community and to grow this community -- businesses. The Seguin community is just awesome for coming together for things like this and benefiting everybody," said Jones.

In its pursuit of a new field, the community initially questioned the future of the historic Smokey Joe Field.

Currently, the stadium is also the home of the Seguin River Monsters, the Texas Collegiate League Champions.

Nonetheless, Jones says he is not worried about its future and believes that it will always serve as a key piece in the game of baseball.

"In talking about Smokey Joe, it's mentioned that it's old and dated but it's old school baseball and in today's generation of kids are playing in new facilities on artificial turf but looking forward to continue to partnership with the Seguin ISD and maybe even have a tournament to where you have a game at the new field but a game can be over at the old school baseball historic Smokey Joe Williams Field to get that grass and get that old school dirt and clay where the kids won't get that going forward here for the high school but still you don't want to forget your history. The history of baseball started out on clay and dirt and grass and lumpy and bumpy and all that and so I'm excited to hear the district talking in their comments that this is community fields.

We want to build the kids at their skill level but also, it's a community asset but we also have the historic Smokey Joe Williams Field and that's a community asset as well that we want to preserve. You can still use it for tournaments and have that old school baseball feel out there," said Jones.

Keller says the city can’t wait to see the complex come online. He says not only will it yield young athletes but also good citizens. He says it enhances the community “we live in.”

"The benefits that the kids, the athletes get when they play their sports, those are lessons that they are going to take through the rest of their lives -- very very important teamwork -- so building facilities like this only enhances that dream for them," said Keller.

The complex is slated for completion on Aug. 30, 2024.

SEGUIN, Texas -- The nine-time defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) champion Texas Lutheran softball team has been voted by the league’s head coaches as the preseason favorite in the 2024 SCAC Preseason Poll Tuesday.

The Bulldogs received 63 points in the poll including each of the seven available first place votes, as coaches cannot vote for their own team. St. Thomas followed in second place with 54 points while Southwestern earned 42 points to land in third. This marks the tenth straight year that TLU has topped the conference’s preseason poll.

Trinity was selected fourth

(41 points), Centenary fifth (32), Schreiner sixth (29), Austin College seventh (17), and Dallas eighth (10).

The Bulldogs finished the SCAC regular season 19-2 in 2023 en route to their ninth consecutive conference regular season crown.

The Bulldogs enter the 2024 season with a 192-5 (.975) league record and have not lost a conference series since joining the conference in 2014.

The program has won 17 SCAC titles (nine SCAC regular season titles and eight SCAC tournament championships), all under head coach Wade Wilson.

from last season, including NFCA All-Americans: reigning SCAC Player of the Year Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek), reigning SCAC Newcomer of the Year Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody), and reigning SCAC Pitcher of the Year Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls). In total, TLU returns three NFCA All-Americans, five NFCA All-Region players, and eight AllSCAC players from a season ago.

Jeanne Reavis, age 89 of Seguin, formerly of McAllen and Kerrville, passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2024. Jeanne was born on August 28, 1934 in McCook, Texas to Magdalena (Labus) and Izydor Gawlik.

Jeanne will be remembered working at McAllen State Bank from 1967 to 1988. She loved collecting birds, painting, sewing and baking.

Jeanne is preceded in death by her husbands, Rufus Maness and J. D. Reavis, her siblings, Ed, Sam and Jan Gawlik, and Tracy Martin, Trudy Powell, Sallie Keck, Lottie Wolfe, and

Bernice Jeffreys.

Survivors include her children, Rhonda Mercer and husband Mike, Annette Welker, Mark Curry and wife Cindy, and Shari Shepard; sister, Alice Perry; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Deacon Nick Carrillo officiating.

Graveside services and interment will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission Texas.

Earl Graham Bishop, 88, left this world for eternal glory on Friday, January 26, 2024. He was born April 23, 1935 to Soloman Pierce Bishop and Ina Mae Mobley Bishop in Smiley, TX. His family and friends from his childhood lovingly call him “E.G.” In 1960, he married the love of his life, Linda Carol Streety Bishop, and they had three daughters that they adored, Carol, Lisa, and LeeAnn. Earl is best known for his faithfulness to his Heavenly Father; his love and devotion to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren; and his kindness, generosity and service to his church and community.

Earl attended school in Smiley, TX, and graduated in 1952. He loved his country, and joined the US Air Force in 1955. While in the Air Force he was assigned to England and Germany, and enjoyed meeting up with his brother, Virgil, who was serving in the US Army. After leaving the Air Force, he attended Durham Technical School in San Antonio, TX and was employed at Medina AFB as an aircraft mechanic.

Earl and Linda resided in San Antonio until Earl went to work for Brown & Root at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Houston where he worked in the testing and simulation lab, including SpaceCraft and the Lunar Rover. Later, he worked with instrumentation at Amoco Chemical and Oil Company and EPIC in the Houston and Galveston areas.

They made their home in League City, TX and were active members of the First Baptist Church (now Bay Area Church). Earl was ordained as a deacon and had a combined service of more than 50 years at churches in League City and Smiley. In League City, he also served as a Sunday School Teacher and with the bus ministry, which was committed to bringing unchurched children to church on Sundays. He loved helping people in the community, especially children and the elderly, and did so quietly and often anonymously. He was actively involved with the Bay Area Christian School where his daughters attended. He also enjoyed going on mission trips; his favorite was to Costa Rica.

In 1997, Earl retired and he and Linda moved back to Smiley, TX. He and his brothers renovated Linda’s family home where they settled into life in the country. They were busier than ever and spent their time seeing their grandchildren, caring for their aging mothers, serving at the First Baptist Church in Smiley, and volunteering with the Texas Baptist Men with Disaster Relief. Earl and Linda also traveled across the United States in their RV and enjoyed seeing the country and camping with friends, family, and their grandchildren. More than anything, they loved being near to their six grandchildren, their pride and joy, and attended many athletic events, dances performances, recitals, church programs, baptisms, and graduations.

Earl leaves a legacy of devotion to his family and service to God and his community.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Linda Carol Streety Bishop; his parents, Solomon and Ina Bishop; his infant son, Earl Graham Bishop, Jr.; son-in-law, Dr. David Jimenez; sister-in-law, Betty Bishop; brother and sister-in-law, Elder and Gracie Bishop; and his brothers-inlaw, William Duncan and Philip Streety.

He is survived by his daughters, Carol Pierce and husband, Billy, of San Antonio; Lisa Jimenez, of El Paso; LeeAnn Dunn and husband, Darren, of Seguin; grandchildren Everett Pierce, Ellis Pierce, Ethan Pierce and wife, Sarah, Julia Beebe, Carter Dunn, and Addison Dunn; siblings Howard Bishop (Francis), Viola Duncan, Virgil Bishop, Irene Gaylord (Tommy); brother-in-law, Jim Streety ( Janie); sister in law, Jackie Streety; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m.

Terrill Allen Lewis Jr. died January 20, 2024 at the age of 31. Funeral services, for Terrill Allen Lewis Jr., will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Greater Second Baptist Church in Seguin. Interment will follow at the Capote Cemetery. He is survived by his father, Terrill Lewis Sr.; step-mother, Annette Lewis; maternal grandmother,Velma Marie Clark; sisters, Ashley Brittany Griffin, Ashlynne Breanna Clark, Tia Lewis, Barbara Brunney, and Olivia White; brothers, Tyqueron Malik Adgers, Falanzo Townes, and Angel Macumba; and aunts, Ester Marie Mims and Pamela Campbell. McFarland

Renee McFarland, age 77 of Kingsbury, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully on January 28, 2024, at home surrounded by her family and friends after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

She was born in Rocksprings, Texas on January 26, 1947, where she spent her early years living on a ranch managed by her father. The family then moved to Del Rio, Texas where she attended elementary school, and junior high school, and graduated from Del Rio High School class of 1964. She then attended San Angelo Junior College for a year before transferring to Sam Houston State University, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1968.

She married Jim McFarland in the summer of 1968 and worked in College Station while Jim was finishing his degree from Texas A&M University. They moved numerous times as Jim was in the oil and natural gas business living in Fritch, Texas, Lovington, New Mexico, Midland, Texas, Houston Texas and finally Kingsbury, Texas. Later in life, Renee attended Prairie View A&M and received her teaching certificate. She enjoyed teaching at Vogel and Mary B. Erskine Elementary Schools in the Seguin

Katherine Lynn “Kathy” Fealy Matalik, age 74 of Seguin, passed away on January 11, 2024. Kathy was born on December 20, 1949 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Doris Jane (Manak) and Michael Joseph Fealy. She was raised in Kingsville and attended Texas A & I in Kingsville (now A & M) receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.

After living in Key West with her former husband while he served in the military, they returned to Texas and settled in Seguin in 1978. Kathy was a beloved middle school science teacher and librarian at St. James Catholic School for many years. She loved her St. James Catholic Church, her Church Family and teaching. Music was a favorite of hers and it shined through as she served as the church organist, taught piano and served as an active choir member. Kathy also was a member of the St. Ann’s Circle at St. James.

After retirement from St. James Catholic School, Kathy pursued an

Independent School District, where she made many lifelong friendships with the teachers, administrators, and staff of each school. Along the way, she gave birth to two sons Jason and Jeremy.

She was preceded in death by her parents Russel Reams and Lucille Cowsert Reams of Belmont, Texas, and brother Rusty Reams of Belmont, Texas.

She is survived by her husband Jim of Kingsbury, Texas, son Jason and wife Michelle and two granddaughters Ainslee and Maddie of Tomball, Texas, son Jeremy and wife Amy, grandsons Jonah and Wyatt, and granddaughters Chloe and Molly of Houston, Texas, brother-in-law Jack McFarland and wife Dana of Houston, Texas, sister-in-law Marcy White McFarland of San Antonio, Texas, sister-in-law Charlene Reams Manning of Georgetown, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church Seguin, Texas on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nick Hart and the Rev. Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Marena Johanna Schubert Evola, age 84 of Geronimo, Texas passed away on January 25, 2024. Marena was born on October 2, 1939 in New Braunfels, Texas to Selda B. (Dietert) and Martin B. Schubert.

Marena, or as she was affectionately known to all in the Geronimo area, “Miss Renie” graduated high school and joined the Army where she served as a nurse. While stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, she met the love of her life, Nick P. Evola, Jr. They married, moved back to Louisiana, and then to Texas where they settled in Geronimo in 1972.

Miss Renie was Geronimo’s best at-home day care and she sure loved the babies. She retired after 20 years of loving and nurturing the babies and toddlers to continue her love of sewing, arts and crafts, as well as baking

her delicious home-made bread. Miss Renie was a beautiful and loving wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother (Nana). She will be tremendously missed by her family and friends.

Marena is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Timothy and Terry, and her daughter Grace Bourlon.

Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Nick P. Evola, Jr.; children, Johanna Bender, N. Philip Evola, III (Izumi), Paul Evola (Christy), and Ronald Evola (Michele); her brother Martin “Butch” Schubert; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

First Human With Neuralink Implant Recovering (Undated) -- Elon Musk says the first human to receive a Neuralink cybernetic brain implant is recovering. The company, founded by Musk, aims to eventually use the implants to control electronic devices and allow people with paralysis to regain motor function. Musk hopes the implants could help people with diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The tech billionaire posted on X that the implant was put in a human for the first time on Sunday.

AG Garland To Undergo Surgery (Washington, DC) -- Attorney General Merrick Garland is scheduled for back surgery Saturday and will temporarily give power to Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. The announcement Monday from the Justice Department is in line with new rules about cabinet secretaries, after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin failed to notify the White House for days last month when he underwent surgery and was hospitalized. Garland’s procedure is to relieve compression between two vertebrae and he’s expected to return home the same day.

ACLU Suing Ohio Over Gender-Affirming Care Ban (Columbus, OH) -- The American Civil Liberties Union is planning to sue the state of Ohio over the newly-passed ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Both the Ohio House and Senate voted to override Republican Governor Mike DeWine’s veto of House Bill 68 which outlaws hormone therapies and other forms of care for transgender youth. The ACLU says allowing the law to go through would be disastrous for young people in the state who struggle with gender dysphoria. The organization is planning to ask a judge to issue an injunction to stop the law from taking effect on April 23rd.

Two Residents Diagnosed With Legionnaires Disease At Brooklyn NYCHA Complex (Brooklyn, NY) -- There are concerns about the water at a NYCHA housing complex in Brooklyn after two people were diagnosed with Legionnaires disease. Free Accredited Adult Homeschool Program The Life Changing Church is now offering a Free Accredited Homeschool Program for adults wanting to earn their high school diploma. It is a self-paced, no classes to attend program. You work around your schedule and at the end of the program you will receive an accredited diploma that is acceptable for college. Salvation Army Office The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
