Local Girl Scouts kick off their annual cookie sale

(Seguin) - The pandemic isn’t stopping Girl Scouts from its annual cookie sale. Now, although there are a few changes with the hosting of booths, local Girl Scout troops say they are ready to get those boxes of cookies into your hands.

Boxes upon boxes of Girl Scout cookies were unloaded last week and hand delivered to friends and family who secured their cookies through pre-order. The plan now is to reach other customers who have been waiting for this once a year treat.

Denise Crettenden, who serves as the community chair and co-community cookie manager for parts of Guadalupe and Gonzales counties, says cookie season is always an exciting time for troops. She says in preparation of cookie season during a pandemic, customers will see a few changes -- changes that will keep everyone safe.

“We have a lot of wonderful businesses who let us set up booths in past years and we all know that things are a little different this year so we can’t have all the booths that we’ve had in the

past. Safety is the first consideration and so, we are changing some things up this year. You won’t see girls at as many locations. You’ll see more drive-up booths. You’ll have more girls going door to door and also hanging door hangers on your door. You can have contactless delivery.

So, the girls and their parents and Girl Scouts are getting creative with safe ways to get you your cookies,” said Crettenden.

Crettenden says customers, however, don’t have to wait to walk up or drive through a booth. She says they can secure their cookies online.

“You can go to the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas website, girlscouts-swtx.org and on there, you will find a place where you can enter your zip code and find cookies near you. So, that will list booths that are coming up, the times and the places and the details for those booths and there you can also put in a request to have a troop contact you. The other thing you can do is if you have any kind of question about cookies, you can give me a call and when people want to order, I just route that information to the local troops in the area,” said Crettenden.

Players get an extra two weeks to register for Seguin Little League

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- If you just realized that you missed Friday’s registration for a little baseball this spring, don’t worry. Due to low numbers in sign-up, Seguin Little League has decided to offer your child another chance to play by extending the registration deadline to Friday, Feb. 19.

It was last year and the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that prompted a total cancellation of the entire spring season. This year, Board President Jason Harrison, says Little League is optimistic about stepping onto the field.

“We did play in the fall and we actually had a safety plan in place to keep our kids and spectators as safe as possible, social distancing, wearing masks, hand sanitizer stuff like that. As long as nothing catastrophic or unforeseen comes up, we plan on having a season.

We are being told to plan for it and to move forward,” said Harrison.

Harrison says he understands why there might be some hesitation for baseball and softball players to sign-up but believes that the planning for a season is just as important as rolling out that schedule.

“It’s very important because we still have a lot of planning to do as far as getting coaches lined up and making sure our numbers are where we are able to have teams in every division to play. If we have only one team in one division, we are going to have to look and see if we can play New Braunfels or somebody close by to interleague with them so the kiddos can play.

It’s very important to get them signed up before the deadline,” said Harrison.

There are no late fees being assessed for those still wanting to sign-up. Harrison says Little League will make sure that if for any reason this season does not happen, families aren’t out the cost of registration.

“We are always available to work with people as needed but we did put a post on Facebook and it does state on there that for whatever reason we do get cancelled or we can’t play, we will refund registration fees in full as long as we haven’t bought uniforms yet.

If we are already past the point of uniforms, ordered and have to be paid for, upon cancellation, we will refund minus the cost of the uniform only and that’s approximately $25 cause there is that cost and we are non-profit and we don’t have any other money other than registration money,” said Harrison.

Harrison says the use of the Little League fields also lies in the hands of the city of Seguin which has extended the cancellation of all of its facilities through the end of February due to the increase in COVID-19 cases. Harrison says once facilities are allowed to open back up on March 1, teams will be ready for action.

He says although the number of weeks for practice will be shortened, the game schedule will still get underway mid-March.

Meanwhile, Harrison says the Seguin Little League is ready for play and is ready to rollout any and all safety measures to ensure a healthy season.

“We will require teams, coaches, players if they are huddled up, they will have to wear masks if they can’t space (out) enough. In dugouts, we will probably won’t

allow all the kids in the dugout at one time, just for spacing distance and then, we are looking at getting thermometers for the coaches to use for temperature checks for the teams as they come on the field.

It’s just another safety procedure put into place,” said Harrison.

As for registration, Harrison says the league looks to welcome as many kids as possible and is hoping for another great batch of players.

“The youngest they can be is four-years-old. So, to play baseball, your child has to be four-years-old by Aug. 31 of this year. To play softball, they have to four-years-old by Dec. 31 of

last year and then it goes up to 16-years-old and if anybody has a question about it, there is always on the Little League International website, there is always an age check. You can go on there and put your child’s birthday and it will tell you what their league age would be,” said Harrison.

Again, the Jan. 29 Little League registration has been extended through Feb. 19. Paper registration forms are available on the south side of the concession stand located in the baseball complex at Max Starcke Park. Cost is $90 per player. Online registration is also available with a link available on the Seguin Little League Facebook page.

(New Braunfels) -- The four members of a family, who died recently in a house fire, have been identified. The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Officer released the names the victims this week. They are identified as 44-year old Jose Selvera, 18-year old Julissa Selvera, 16-year old Abigail Soto and eightyear old Allen Selvera.

Medical examiner identifies four family members who died in fire

The family died in the fire that started just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, January 12 at the family’s home, located in the 300 block of Leisure Village Drive.

Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says the cause of the fire

“While en route, fire crews were informed that there were four people trapped inside of the home. Additional resources were requested from surrounding fire departments in an attempt to rescue the trapped individuals.

Pinder initially said that the fire did not appear to be suspicious in nature, but Thursday he again stressed that their investigation was ongoing.

“We have the same flavors we did last year and they are the same price, $4 a box. You may see on the news and other places that there’s a French toast cookie. That is not in our area but we have the same delicious ones that we are used to Thin Mints, Samoas, Do-si-dos, Tagalongs, S’mores, Trefoils, Toffee and lemon,” said Crettenden.

Not only does the customer get to sink their teeth into a great product, but the Girl Scout also benefits from each sale. Crettenden, who is also the leader of two different troops,

says the cookie sale is more than just about raising money.

“It teaches these girls lots of skills including business ethics, marketing, goal setting.

They learn some math along the way and they just learn what you can do when you raise money especially with service projects.

They get to see that we collect cookies and we

take them to the fire station or the police station or veterans or to the employees at the hospital. We ship them overseas to soldiers serving abroad so they get to see and be a part of something bigger than themselves,” said Crettenden.

(Pleasanton) - The Navarro girls basketball team survived a cold shooting first half to notch its 17th straight win Friday night, 42-30 over Pleasanton in a District 27-4A road game.

The win keeps Navarro unbeaten in district play with a 6-0 mark in 27-4A games and moves the overall record to 24-1.

(Boerne) - Seguin dropped a district matchup to the ninth-ranked 5A basketball team in the state for the second time this season on Friday, 68-39 in Boerne.

The Matadors are still mathematically alive in the playoff race, but they face an uphill climb. Seguin (7-12) is 5-7 in District 26-5A, two games back of Kerrville-Tivy in the race for the fourth and final seed with four games remaining.

Glasgow Laura Jane Glasgow, age 85 of Kingsbury, passed away on January 24, 2021. Laura Jane was born on June 6, 1935 in Kerrville, Texas to Ruth White McCoy Zinsmeyer and Laurens McCoy. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Lester Glasgow, her son, Joe Laurens Glasgow and her parents.

Survivors include her sons, John L. Schlueter

Del Schlueter, one of the sweetest men to ever walk the earth, left us yesterday morning while sitting in his chair; probably laughing at Seinfeld re-runs.

Del, the 1951 Seguin high school class president was one of those people who never met a stranger. It would take him 15 minutes to get to his table at El Ranchito, because he had to stop and talk to so many people on the way.

The 1955 graduate of the University of Texas School of Pharmacy and avid Longhorn fan met his wife Mary Willingham at the University and they married shortly after graduation. He recently received a letter from the Texas Exes mentioning that he was one of the oldest living season ticket holders.

She remained a Seguin resident and graduated from Seguin High School in the class of 1949. She married Erwin Forshage, of Seguin, on July 7, 1950. He preceded her in death in September 2006.

Mary and Del moved back to Seguin in 1968 where he worked at, and eventually purchased Williams Drug Store. Del was a true “Girl Dad”. He loved raising their 3 daughters, Jamie, Sarah, and Anndy, followed by their 2 granddaughters Lauren and Kelsey. (All of whom, he was proud to say, also graduated from UT.)

Delbert Ralph Schlueter, was born in Seguin, Texas on March 21, 1933 to Ferdinand Schlueter, and Linda Salge Schlueter. His parents, his brother Virgil Schlueter, and his wife Mary Willingham Schlueter preceded him in death. His loving wife, Sandra Gringrich Hollamon, his daughters, Jamie Schlueter, Sarah Jones and her Husband Rex, Anndy Shashack and her husband Dan, and his granddaughters, Lauren Malouf and Kelsey Koehler, survive him. His brother’s children, Frank Schlueter and wife Anne, Greta Drennan, and Harriett “Missy” Schlueter, also survive him.

A memorial service will be planned near his birthday in March. He was never one to pass up an opportunity to celebrate.

Rangel Alfredo Salas Rangel went to be with the Lord January 14, 2021.

Born in Seguin, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Maxine Rangel, brothers Rodolpho Rangel and Richard Rangel.

He leaves behind his sister, Josefina (Rangel) Lehmann his niece Elizabeth Escareno and great niece Madison Westenbarger, nephew Rodolpho (Rudy)-Shelly Rangel his great nephew Nicholas Rangel and great niece Mckenna , niece Dominga and James Arevalo and his great nephews, Jeremiah Arevalo, Azariah Arevalo, and his great nieces, Crystal Avila, Jerilyn Tovar-Eddie, Ariel Valadez-Jesus, Adley Arevalo and fiancé Kreston Joyner.

He was a United State Marine Veteran, LCpl. His career was welding and the love of fishing. If you were looking for uncle Freddy he would be at Starcke Park under the oak tree fishing and having a good time. He was a survivalist.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends; especially his great great nephews and great great nieces who got to spend the last 2 years getting to know him.

His viewing and funeral service will be Monday Feb 8th at 11am at Sunset Memorial Oaks, New Braunfels, TX and burial would be right after at Fort Sam in San Antonio at 1:30pm.

Dorothy Mae Bierstedt, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on January 29, 2021.

Heinemeyer

Ben William Heinemeyer, age 83 of Geronimo, passed away on January 27, 2021.

Ben was born on January 24, 1938 in Geronimo, Texas to Etelka (Tschoepe) and Beno Heinimeyer. He was a graduate of Navarro High School and then received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Chemistry from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University).

He proudly served his country as a medic in

the United States Army National Guard. He enjoyed a long career as a Chemical Engineer with Dow Chemical. After retirement he raised Beefmaster Cattle and restored Antique Tractors.

He was passionate about gardening, whether it be vegetable, fruits or even fruit trees. He even made a little wine.

Ben is preceded in death by his parents, his niece, Kay Bading, and his brother-in-law, Edwin Bading. Survivors include his loving wife Fran Heinemeyer; sister, Carloyn Heinemeyer Bading; nephew, Nathan Bading; aunt, Melba Tschoepe; step-daughters, Cheryl Pearce, Jeannie Houston, and Charleen Criswell; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; several cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

COVID Cases Fall In Nearly Every State, Hospitalizations Down

(Undated) -- There appears to be some good news as the coronavirus pandemic rages on. The COVID Tracking Project says new infections fell in almost every state. That includes the West region dropping back to pre-Thanksgiving levels. Hospitalizations are also on the decline across the nation, down ten percent from last week. But, the Project also noted U.S. deaths remain high and went up by seven percent. That includes over eight-thousand reported in just the past two days combined.

CDC: 16 States Have Used Less Than 50% Of Vaccines

(Atlanta, GA) -- More than a dozen states are still playing catch up when it comes to coronavirus vaccines. The CDC says 16 states have yet to administer at least 50 percent of the shots they’ve received. Those include Arizona, California, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania. But, the health agency noted Thursday the country as a whole has administered roughly 54 percent of the more than 48-million distributed doses. About four-point-three million Americans have been given both shots.

Maryland Company Says COVID Vaccine Nearly 90% Effective

(Gaithersburg, MD) -- A Maryland biotechnology company says its coronavirus vaccine is proving to be effective in preventing COVID-19. Gaithersburg-based Novavax says the vaccine was 89-percent effective against the disease in Phase Three clinical trials in the United Kingdom.

The studies also found the vaccine was nearly 86-percent effective against the U.K. variant of

COVID-19. A separate Phase Two trial in South Africa found the vaccine is less effective against the strain emerging from that country.

New Study Shows COVID-19 Levels “One-Thousand Times Higher” In The Brain Than The Lungs

(Washington, DC) -- A new study just released might explain why most people lose their sense of taste and smell when they are infected with COVID-19. The study reports that peak virus levels are about one-thousand times higher in the brain than in the lungs, suggesting COVID-19 might replicate faster in the brain. More research is being done on what long-term effects the virus leaves, but some side effects already being reported include sleep issues, difficulty concentrating and memory problems. The study was published in the National Library of Medicine.

Washington Football Coach Rivera Cancer Free

(Undated) -- Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera is cancer free. His wife and daughter tweeted Thursday that Rivera’s latest test results show he has won his battle with cancer.

Rivera announced back in August that he was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer. He underwent seven weeks of treatment during the season including three rounds of chemotherapy. However, he only missed a total of three practices and never missed a game. Players echoed throughout the season that coach Rivera’s fight helped inspire them.
