(Seguin) -- “There are just not enough vaccines to go around.” Those are the words of Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher who is providing yet another update and reminder to all those who are looking for the COVID-19 vaccine.

(Seguin) -- Although the county remains on standby, Guadalupe County officials says it is still working to prepare residents for when the COVID-19 vaccines do become available.

“Everything that we’ve been talking about just like the public has been hearing, there’s not enough vaccine to go around. We’ve got right around two million vaccines distributed in the state of Texas for 30 million Texans.

If they were distributing 200,000 to 250,000 vaccines per week, it would take over 70 weeks to vaccinate the entire state of Texas, so we’ve got some supply deficiencies to say the least but what we’ve focused on working with our partners in the city of Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, Seguin, New Braunfels and the smaller cities is basically identifying and solidifying those mass vaccination sites within multiple major cities but also with our partners working with volunteer groups.

Everything is on paper and is planned out to basically open up these massive distribution sites once we get these vaccines,” said Kutscher.

County utilizing all resources to make sure residents stayed informed

SIGN UP continued from Page 1 “You can go to the county webpage. Go to the emergency management section and on the left hand column, go all the way down, it’s the second from the bottom and you sign up for that. What that does is it provides your information. You put in however you want to be notified, phone call, email, text and what we are going to do is when we find out when we are going to have a vaccine allocation, we are going to notify people through that system.

We can basically draw a circle on the map - you know whether that’s going to be in Seguin or that’s going to be in Schertz or if that’s going to be in Cibolo. We can go so far out and notify those people who are going to be in that community first. So, we can say if you are registered in that system, we are going to notify you. You will also be notified about any other event that goes on. If there is a tornado, if there is a flood, if there is a missing person, if the sheriff’s office or any local PD are out in the area, that’s the same system they use to notify you, so it helps to stay informed and we are just going to use that because it’s free. It’s paid for by AACOG so we are going to make sure we are using all of our resources,” said Pinder.

Again, the sign-up for the Reverse Everbridge 9-1-1 system is only for alerts and shouldn’t be

mistaken for any official type of registration for the vaccine.

Pinder says whether it’s the reverse 9-1-1 system or other outlets, the county is going to make sure all available communication resources are made available to them.

“There was an email set up last week. It’s COVID19@co.guadalupe.tx.us. If anybody has any questions, email us at the email address. We are going to put that on our social media press release that way people can ask us questions. They can email us information - anything they want to talk to us about. We are going to field those emails through that and then we’ll respond back to those folks or we are asking people to just check their preferred media outlets. Last week, the PIOs (public information officers) all over the county had that information, school districts, city officials, county officials, Facebook, the radio station, everybody had it, the newspaper so we want to make sure that we are touching every person in the county to make sure they are staying informed,” said Pinder.

Once there is information about vaccinations, media outlets such as Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News will also work closely

with county leaders in helping to better define the details behind that process -- a process that will be required to successfully administer the vaccinations throughout the community.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says although it’s been a bit of a challenge, the county is doing all that it can to stay prepared for this vaccine rollout.

“We are on a holding partner. It is a waiting game.

I appreciate everybody’s patience. I understand it is frustrating but we are pushing every avenue that we possibly can and will continue to work on those plans so we are as prepared as possible,” said Kutscher.

Again, he says staying informed these next few weeks and even months will be important for everybody. He says if folks have not yet registered for the Reverse 911 alert system then he encourages them to do so as soon as possible.

County shares more on vaccine supply deficiencies

JUDGE continued from Page 1 County Commissioner Drew Engelke says the lack of vaccine in the county is not the fault of Guadalupe or any other county that finds itself in the same position.

“For vaccines, I get a lot of calls, of course too. We are basically in a waiting game. Just like the general public, the county is waiting on the state to allocate to the county so we are doing what we can to get the allocations but we are just in a holding pattern as far as distribution. As long as the public understands that because they are like ‘Where is it? Where is it?

Why are they getting it and we are not?’ It’s not up to Guadalupe County. It’s the state,” said Engelke.

Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management officer, says it’s important to explain how these vaccines are being allocated to the various counties.

He says seeing all the vaccines being administered in Bexar County has created plenty of confusion.

“If you look at the state’s website, there’s two different categories. There’s medical care providers and there’s hubs. San Antonio is a hub. That is why San Antonio is getting the vaccines and you are seeing the allocations of 9,000 of this and 9,000 of that. They are a hub. That’s what the state set them up as. We are not a hub. Schertz EMS, any doctor’s office here or the hospital is only a medical care provider. Until, we can hit that hub list which I don’t see us hitting anytime soon, we won’t’ be put into priority. Some counties in the state haven’t received any vaccine so none. We’ve been on several calls with judges, mayors, they are like the county next to us is getting all of these vaccines, we haven’t even received one dose so that’s one of the things that like HEB’s and things like that are working with those folks to try to even get their 1As taken care of,” said Pinder.

According to Pinder, a hub is defined as an area for a large distribution. So far, most areas for hubs in the state have been large cities.

He says although Guadalupe County is not yet considered a hub, the right paperwork has already been submitted to the state for consideration.

Pinder says the county, its various cities as well as Guadalupe Regional Medical Center have all worked early on to lay out their plans for when a mass vaccination opportunity does arrive in the county.

He also reminds residents that there is not a waiting list for the vaccine.

In the meantime, officials remind residents that any available doses will still be distributed following the Phase1 A and 1 B eligibility requirements.

Phase 1 A population includes frontline healthcare workers and residents at long-term care facilities.

Phase 1 B includes people 65 of age and older or people 16 years of age and older with at least one chronic medical condition that puts them at an increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19.

Marion Mayor shares personal recovery, hospitalization from COVID-19

(Marion) -- After a couple of days in the hospital, Victor Contreras, the mayor for the city of Marion, is back at home recovering from the COVID-19 virus. After allowing him to rest a few more days, the Seguin Daily News caught up with Contreras who wanted to share some personal insight into the reality of this very dangerous pandemic.

Contreras says a person never fully realizes the seriousness of COVID-19 until they are told it’s time to go to the hospital.

“Last week, I went in for a test on Tuesday and came back positive and I went ahead and had my wife tested at the same time and then they came up and said we can take an antiviral medication -- an infusion type and took it on Wednesday and we came home and then I started feeling really bad. They kept me that required hour.but I started feeling bad. My sugars went really low and some other things (were happening) so

I went back to the hospital. I went to the emergency room and I spent two days in the hospital because of this. I had to have extra oxygen so once I got up to 95 percent without the oxygen and walked around, then they would let me go home which I’m glad I was able to do,” said Contreras. “ I just want to say that all these people that say that this is a hoax

or a joke, this is real.

COVID is real. It has real consequences that can happen.”

As an elected official and the mayor of a community, Contreras says all the issues related to COVID-19 over these last several months have made governing a bit challenging. He says if anything, he is more committed than ever in encouraging

“I posted everything that I get from the city or CDC, or from the county or the state on our website and I’ll write on my newsletters on all this. I just want everybody to understand that if we are going to win this fight over COVID, we all have to wear our masks, use our hand sanitizers and social distance and this is not a joke. This is for real. I’m living through it and I think there are people who say ‘oh, the government just wants me to do it.’ No, I think the government wants you to do it for safety and not just for yourself but for the people around you,” said Contreras.

In sharing his experience, Contreras says he also can’t say enough about the top notch medical attention that was delivered to his bedside during his stay at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin.

He says the community is fortunate to have such

an excellent healthcare facility.

“They are wonderful people.

They are wonderful human beings and the nurses and doctors are always professional on what they do and they tell you right up front what they are going to do, this is what we expect,” said Contreras.

Again, Contreras says his body’s response to the virus was not what he had expected but again is just grateful to be back on the road to recovery.

“I’m glad I’m here. I’m hoping I don’t have a relapse or anything like that. But, I”m glad I’m here and I’m hopeful to get back to my office.

You know, I like to work,” said Contreras.

Contreras says unable to see family especially his wife MaryJo was perhaps the most difficult thing. He says while he was in the hospital, MaryJo was at home struggling with the illness on her own.

Luckily, he says both are on the mend and home to be cleared following another COVID-19 test next week.

(Marion) - The Marion boys basketball team was 2.3 seconds away from avenging a lopsided December loss to the fifth-ranked team in the state Tuesday night, but San Antonio-Cole’s Silas Livingston took an inbounds pass in the backcourt, dribbled and hopped across the midcourt stripe, and burried a desperation three from 40 feet out as time expired to give the Cougars a 63-61 win on the Bulldogs’ home court.

The gut-wrenching loss drops Marion to 6-3 in District 26-3A, 16-3 overall, while Cole remains alone in first place with a 9-0 district mark and a 15-5 season record.

Glasgow Laura Jane Glasgow, age 85 of Kingsbury, passed away on January 24, 2021. Laura Jane was born on June 6, 1935 in Kerrville, Texas to Ruth White McCoy Zinsmeyer and Laurens McCoy. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Lester Glasgow, her son, Joe Laurens Glasgow and her parents.

Survivors include her sons, John L. He also loved watching Texas High School Football, and was the president of the Matador booster club during the Jack Taylor days. Del was always an active member of his church and the community, and an overall great guy. His loving heart, great sense of humor and quick wit will be sorely missed.

Schlueter

Del Schlueter, one of the sweetest men to ever walk the earth, left us yesterday morning while sitting in his chair; probably laughing at Seinfeld re-runs.

Del, the 1951 Seguin high school class president was one of those people who never met a stranger. It would take him 15 minutes to get to his table at El Ranchito, because he had to stop and talk to so many people on the way.

The 1955 graduate of the University of Texas School of Pharmacy and avid Longhorn fan met his wife Mary Willingham at the University and they married shortly after graduation. He recently received a letter from the Texas Exes mentioning that he was one of the oldest living season ticket holders.

She remained a Seguin resident and graduated from Seguin High School in the class of 1949. She married Erwin Forshage, of Seguin, on July 7, 1950. He preceded her in death in September 2006.

Mary and Del moved back to Seguin in 1968 where he worked at, and eventually purchased Williams Drug Store. Del was a true “Girl Dad”. He loved raising their 3 daughters, Jamie, Sarah, and Anndy, followed by their 2 granddaughters Lauren and Kelsey. (All of whom, he was proud to say, also graduated from UT.)

Delbert Ralph Schlueter, was born in Seguin, Texas on March 21, 1933 to Ferdinand Schlueter, and Linda Salge Schlueter. His parents, his brother Virgil Schlueter, and his wife Mary Willingham Schlueter preceded him in death. His loving wife, Sandra Gringrich Hollamon, his daughters, Jamie Schlueter, Sarah Jones and her Husband Rex, Anndy Shashack and her husband Dan, and his granddaughters, Lauren Malouf and Kelsey Koehler, survive him. His brother’s children, Frank Schlueter and wife Anne, Greta Drennan, and Harriett “Missy” Schlueter, also survive him.

A memorial service will be planned near his birthday in March. He was never one to pass up an opportunity to celebrate.

Rangel Alfredo Salas Rangel went to be with the Lord January 14, 2021. Born in Seguin, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Maxine Rangel, brothers Rodolpho Rangel and Richard Rangel.

He leaves behind his sister, Josefina (Rangel) Lehmann his niece Elizabeth Escareno and great niece Madison Westenbarger, nephew Rodolpho (Rudy)-Shelly Rangel his great nephew Nicholas Rangel and great niece Mckenna , niece Dominga and James Arevalo and his great nephews, Jeremiah Arevalo, Azariah Arevalo, and his great nieces, Crystal Avila, Jerilyn Tovar-Eddie, Ariel Valadez-Jesus, Adley Arevalo and fiancé Kreston Joyner.

He was a United State Marine Veteran, LCpl. His career was welding and the love of fishing.

If you were looking for uncle Freddy he would be at Starcke Park under the oak tree fishing and having a good time. He was a survivalist.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends; especially his great great nephews and great great nieces who got to spend the last 2 years getting to know him.

His viewing and funeral service will be Monday Feb 8th at 11am at Sunset Memorial Oaks, New Braunfels, TX and burial would be right after at Fort Sam in San Antonio at 1:30pm.

Luensmann

Roland Henry Luensmann, age 87 of Marion, Texas joined our Lord and Savior on Monday, January 4, 2021. Roland was born in Bexar County, Texas on July 31, 1933 to Henry and Alma (Schultz) Luensmann.

Roland attended Clemens School in Zuehl, Tx. He was a lifelong member of Redeemer United Church of Christ, being baptized in 1934, and confirmed in 1948. He was a man dedicated to Christ and served our Lord with grace. Roland proudly served in the U.S. Army and spent time in Korea and Japan. He retired from Texas State Dept. of Highway Services after 37 years. After his retirement he drove school buses for six years for Marion High School.

Roland was affiliated with many organizations, he was a member of Sons of Hermann Lodge Zuehl 163, he was also a lifetime member of Bexar Social Club. He married the love of his life Anna Dell Reininger on April 2, 1960.

Roland enjoyed many other activities in his life, he enjoyed fishing, dancing, bowling and trips to the casino’s. But there was no greater love to Roland than the Lord and his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Roland is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Linda Koltermann and husband George, Alice Walter and husband Willie, Howard Luensmann, John Luensmann and Edgar Luensmann and wife Glory Ann, brother-in-law, Virgil Ploch, and nephews, Allan Koltermann and Jeff Luensmann. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Anna Dell Luensmann; his daughter, Kimberly Luensmann; brother, Bill Luensmann and wife Phyllis; sister, Alma Ploch; sistersin-law, Celie Luensmann and Jeanette Luensmann; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Clara Mae Bohuslav

October 7, 1931 – January 21, 2021 C l a r a B o h u s l a v, age 89, of San Antonio, passed away on Jan. 21, 2021.

Clara was born on Oct. 7, 1931 in Flatonia, Texas to Max and Clara (Jarosek) Freytag. After graduating from Flatonia High School, Clara worked briefly in the civil service in San Antonio.

She married Johnnie Bohuslav on May 8, 1954. In addition to caring for her four boys, she worked outside the home caring for youth as a school nurse in the Brownwood Independent School District. Later, she worked alongside Johnnie as the most patient “rodman, errand runner and snacks provider” in their surveying and engineering business.

Clara cherished the times she spent in the company of her siblings, children and grandchildren, sharing stories and laughs, spoiling them with food and love, and marking milestones with song and dance. Her faith was strong and she was committed to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Catholic Church.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie, her parents, and her brothers, Daniel and Ralph Freytag. She is survived by her sister Gertrude Harris, her brothers and sisters-in-law Wally and Helen Freytag, and Dennis and Barbara Freytag. Clara and Johnnie raised 4 sons, John (wife Filecia), Michael (wife Anne), Thomas (wife Katy), and James (wife Lisa). Clara was delighted by her 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joe “GiGi” Polanco, age 70 of Seguin, joined Our Lord and Savior on Friday, December 18, 2020.

Joe was born on May 14, 1950 in Guadalupe County, Texas to Narciso and Alicia (Saldua)

Polanco. GiGi will be fondly remembered as a real country man, he loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as golfing. Even getting that coveted hole in one! He loved the Lord and adored his family. He was a true jokester; GiGi was always around to make you smile.

He was a musician in his younger years and you could always catch him gracing everyone with his singing skills.

The man of many skills, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

GiGi is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Roland Castillo.

Born in Victoria, on December 15, 1944, Guadalupe (Lupe to her friends and Peta to her family) was the daughter of Ignacio and Mary Susie (Resendez) Garcia of Victoria. She graduated from Victoria High School in 1963.

She was married to her high school sweetheart Antonio (Tony) Trigo and had five children. They moved to Seguin where she worked at First United Methodist Church for 32 years until she retired. Lupe was a God-Fearing woman

May 25, 1938 — January 14, 2021 Frances Urquiza, age 82 of Seguin, Texas, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021. She was born on May 25, 1938 in Seguin, Texas to Saragoza Marez and Eloisa Hernandez Marez.

Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her infectious laugh would always bring a smile to your face. She was a great cook and housewife, usually preparing large meals, especially during the holidays. When she was more physically able, you would see her in the evenings watering all her lovely plants. She spoiled her children in their younger years and her children returned the favor in her more advanced age.

In her later years, she loved getting on Facebook to see what was happening among her family and friends. She loved watching videos on that site, especially related to cooking. It was her favorite form of entertainment. She also loved playing Mexican bingo every now and then. She loved her children and grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. She was the last survivor of her family and there were days that it brought sadness to her. Our heart

aches to lose her, but we are comforted in the fact that she is no longer in pain or suffering and that she is with all her family and loved ones that have gone before her. We also know that we will see her again one day. She is rejoicing in heaven with a young, healthy body and an eternal smile on her face.

(Undated) -- January is now the deadliest month of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. Numbers from Johns Hopkins University show roughly 77-thousand-700 deaths have been reported so far this month. That surpasses the previous high of just under 77-thousand-500 in December. The increase in deaths comes as the Biden administration works to ramp up vaccine distribution. He called the nationwide vaccination program a difficult operational challenge and said the program was in worse shape than his team expected when they took over.

(Madison, WI) -- Wisconsin’s mask mandate is on the line with the state Senate’s latest vote. The state’s senators voted 18-to-13 on Tuesday to overturn the emergency declaration which allowed Governor Tony Evers to make the mandate State Senator Duey Stroebel says there’s “no such thing as a perpetual emergency.” The state’s Assembly will vote on the measure on Thursday.

Florida Paramedic Arrested For Stolen COVID Vaccines

(Polk County, FL) -- A Florida man who recently held the honor of Paramedic of the Year is being charged for his part in stolen doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Joshua Colon was arrested on charges of forgery, fraud, and misconduct for covering up a supervisor’s theft of three COVID vaccine doses. He’s accused of forging vaccine forms on vials that he’d been given. Colon claims his supervisor demanded the vaccines and put him in a “very difficult situation.” Colon was just recognized as Paramedic of the Year for his actions in a serious multi-vehicle accident.
