Seguin ISD facility seeks new name Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Nominations are being sought to rename a Seguin ISD facility.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is accepting nominations to rename the Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center portion of the district’s administration building.

Presently, two Seguin ISD facilities are named MercerBlumberg. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says one is the former campus facility in the administration building, located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St., while the current campus facility that serves students, located at 118 N. Bowie St., is officially named Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center at Saegert.

“As it is right now, we do have two facilities named after Mercer Blumberg. We’ve got the MBLC at Saegert. That facility, I think we probably all agree we want to keep that name. However, this facility is also named Mercer Blumberg

Learning Center as it was vacated and we are hoping that we might be able to get community input and possibly make a change,” said Hoffmann.

He says the MercerBlumberg Learning Center at the administration building is now meeting space, offices and storage. He says officials are hoping the community will step forward to submit name suggestions for this facility.

“This would allow district staff to begin the process to inform the community that the district is accepting nominations and suggestions for a name. There is a criteria and a process that is outlined.

We would follow this and share this information with the community to let them know that we are opening up this process for about 30 days.

This is the criteria that can be considered for this facility to be renamed and get the word out,” said Hoffmann.

Seguin ISD approves 20242025 school calendar Survey results help plan for next academic year Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) - Thanks to parents and the Seguin community, the dates are officially set for the upcoming school year in the Seguin ISD. After garnering a total of 1,212 responses via an online school calendar survey, the majority of community members chose Calendar Option 1.

Earlier this month, the two options for the school calendar were provided to the community for consideration. Through the survey, an opportunity was given to them to provide feedback and to ultimately help the district decide which calendar to approve.

Bringing the recommended school calendar to the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees for final approval was Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD. Hoffmann noted that approximately 74 percent of people or 800 to 900 people were in favor of Option 1.

Key notes include Thursday, Aug. 15 as the first day of school and May 25 as the last day of school and the Friday before Memorial Day. The calendar also includes Monday, Aug. 19 as the first day of school for pre-k students at Ball Early Childhood Center.

While all the major holidays remain the same, Hoffmann says parents will find a few changes to the school calendar.

“Teachers suggested that we eliminate the half days during the week. In other words, our current calendar, we have a couple of half days built in on Wednesdays which is early dismissal for students. They were looking to have full days of in-service and getting rid of those half days so there was a suggestion, strong push that we consider Nov. 1 the day after Halloween as an in-service day and student holiday so we have that on Friday, Nov. 1. No students will be in school that day,” said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann says the most significant change is intersession and explains why it will not appear on next year’s calendar.

“Another big change that you will notice is not in the

calendar is intersession as well. Quite frankly, we can’t fund it anymore. There is no more funding available for intersession so that was not included in any of the drafts that went out to the community,” said Hoffmann.

Again, all traditional holidays have been built into this calendar including a student holiday, the Monday, following Easter.

The calendar was pieced together utilizing all the required days by the state and was the final product released by the Seguin ISD’s Education Improvement Council (DEIC) which is composed of teacher representatives from each campus. The calendar was unanimously approved during Tuesday’s meeting of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees.

(Seguin) -- With the start of 2024, Seguin Main Street is seeking vendors for our 2024 Trade Days scheduled for April 27 and October 26. The semi-annual Trade Days are held in conjunction with the larger events of April's Earth Day Festival and October's Pecan Fest.

Vendors selling handmade items, art, food, home goods, outdoor décor, jewelry, clothing, and more are welcome. At the April show, vendors selling eco-friendly, sustainable products are highly encouraged; and at the October show, vendors selling pecan products are highly encouraged.

“Seguin Main Street's Trade Days have been a fundraiser for downtown for over two decades and continue to bring thousands of people to downtown Seguin every year,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB Director, “We hope the people coming to shop at Trade Days will then go visit our downtown merchants and restaurants.”

The cost to be a vendor is $45.00 for a 10' by 10' booth without electric and $50.00 for a booth with electric. Food vendors must also pay a $25.00 temporary food permit fee.

The vendor application can be found on the City of Seguin's website under Main Street. You may also pick up an application at the Seguin Visitor Center at 200 S. Austin Street or by calling (830) 401-2475.

Not only is Seguin Main Street accepting vendors for its markets, but the monthly Yellow Rose Artisan Market welcomes applications for vendors selling handmade products. The market, hosted by the Yellow Rose Fiber Fiesta, is held on the second Sunday and fourth Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Also considered are recommendations by an individual, family or organization who has donated property or funds for the construction of an educational facility in Seguin ISD. Nationwide Sports Update Washington Wizards Head Coach Wes Unseld Jr. To Transition To FO (Washington, DC) -- Washington Wizards Head Coach Wes Unseld Jr. is transitioning to a front office role. The team made the announcement on Thursday. Unseld had a record of 77-and-130 since being hired in the summer of 2021. The Wizards have a record of 7-and-36 this season. The team announced assistant Brian Keefe has been promoted to interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Online Sports Betting Begins Soon In North Carolina (Raleigh, NC) -- Legal sports betting will begin in North Carolina just as postseason college basketball play begins this March. The state lottery commissioner decided yesterday to make March 11th the official beginning of the program across the state. Nine license applications for interactive sports wagering are being considered by the lottery commission.

Police Don’t Suspect Foul Play In Kansas City Chiefs Fans’ Deaths (Kansas City, MO) -- Kansas City police say foul play is not suspected in the deaths of three Chiefs fans. The three men were found frozen to death outside a rental home in Kansas City on January 9th. Their bodies were found after the fiancee of one of the men asked for a welfare check. The attorney of a fourth man who was living at the home said his client was not involved in the deaths of the three men. Police said the fourth man was cooperative the day the bodies were found and “the case is 100-percent not being investigated as a homicide.”

Trail Blazers Top Rockets In Overtime (Houston, TX) -- The Trail Blazers needed overtime to come away with a 137-131 victory over the Rockets in Houston. Anfernee Simons led all scorers with 33 points. Deandre Ayton recorded a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Jerami Grant came within one assist of a double-double after scoring 21 points.

Portland is now last in the Northwest Division at 13-and-31. Alperen Sengun led the Rockets in scoring with 30 points. He also led the team with 10 rebounds and eight assists. Jalen Green scored 29 points for Houston, which is third in the Southwest Division at 20-and-23.

Chargers Hire Jim Harbaugh As New Head Coach (Costa Mesa, CA) -- Jim Harbaugh is making his return to the NFL. The Los Angeles Chargers and Harbaugh have agreed to terms for the national champion-winning coach to take over as the franchise’s next head coach.

Harbaugh returns to the NFL after serving as the head coach at the University of Michigan since 2015. The 60-year-old was the coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-to-2014, where he racked up a record of 44-19-and-1 and led the team to three straight trips to the NFC Championship Game. Harbaugh wrapped up his 15-year NFL playing career with the Chargers in 2000.

Terrill Allen Lewis Jr. died January 20, 2024 at the age of 31. Funeral services, for Terrill Allen Lewis Jr., will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Greater Second Baptist Church in Seguin. He is survived by his father, Terrill Lewis Sr.; step-mother, Annette Lewis; maternal grandmother,Velma Marie Clark; sisters, Ashley Brittany Griffin, Ashlynne Breanna Clark, Tia Lewis, Barbara Brunney, and Olivia White; brothers, Tyqueron Malik Adgers, Falanzo Townes, and Angel Macumba; and aunts, Ester Marie Mims and Pamela Campbell. Lyndon Limuel Langford, age 73, passed away on Monday, January 22 but the imprint he left on Mother Earth will live on. Lyndon was born in Lawton, Oklahoma on January 18, 1951 to Lyndon “Link” and Virginia “Cookie” Potts Langford. In his early years he was a star athlete, student leader, mischiefmaker,dare-devil, and willing to take up for any animal or person he thought might need his protection. He dedicated his life to helping kids and spent over a dozen years leading a wilderness program for court-appointed boys having trouble navigating society. As part of that work, he and the boys traversed almost every navigable river in Texas, as well as taking a multi-week adventure down the Mississippi River on a homemade raft,Hucklebery Finn style. As an educator he worked as a teacher, counselor, principal, and adjunct professor, and earned his PhD in education from The

Katherine Lynn “Kathy” Fealy Matalik, age 74 of Seguin, passed away on January 11, 2024. Kathy was born on December 20, 1949 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Doris Jane (Manak) and Michael Joseph Fealy. She was raised in Kingsville and attended Texas A & I in Kingsville (now A & M) receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.

After living in Key West with her former husband while he served in the military, they returned to Texas and settled in Seguin in 1978. Kathy was a beloved middle school science teacher and librarian at St. James Catholic School for many years. She loved her St. James Catholic Church, her Church Family and teaching. Music was a favorite of hers and it shined through as she served as the church organist, taught piano and served as an active choir member. Kathy also was a member of the St. Ann’s Circle at St. James.

After retirement from St. James Catholic School, Kathy pursued an

University of Texas at the age of 58. He believed everyone should serve their country and he enlisted in the US Air Force ROTC program while in college and was trained as a pilot. He received an Honorable Discharge.

Lyndon is survived by his wife of ten years, Mary Jo; his son Christopher (wife Sarah and children Caden, Vera and Hunter); daughter Kristen (husband Damon Harris and daughter Birdie); son Samuel (wife Mari and daughter Naomi); son Benjamin (and Maddy), and son Scott (Gabriella and son Koa), stepson Joseph Filip (wife Emily); stepson Kevin Filip (wife Marissa and son Leon); brother Randy, and sisters Tana, Karon, and Lynda.

In addition to working in education for over 40-years, Lyndon and his wife visualized and opened Court Street Coffee Shop in Seguin which they owned from 2014-2018, a gathering place for the community and a platform for local and budding musicians.

The family is holding a private gathering for friends and family in memory of Lyndon on Saturday, January 27. In lieu of flowers, memorials for Lyndon may be made to Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin, 921 W. Jeanne Reavis, age 89 of Seguin, formerly of McAllen and Kerrville, passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2024. Jeanne was born on August 28, 1934 in McCook, Texas to Magdalena (Labus) and Izydor Gawlik.

Jeanne will be remembered working at McAllen State Bank from 1967 to 1988. She loved collecting birds, painting, sewing and baking.

Jeanne is preceded in death by her husbands, Rufus Maness and J. D. Reavis, her siblings, Ed, Sam and Jan Gawlik, and Tracy Martin, Trudy Powell, Sallie Keck, Lottie Wolfe, and

Bernice Jeffreys.

Survivors include her children, Rhonda Mercer and husband Mike, Annette Welker, Mark Curry and wife Cindy, and Shari Shepard; sister, Alice Perry; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Deacon Nick Carrillo officiating.

Mass Malaria Vaccine Rollout Begins In Cameroon (Yaounde, Cameroon) -- The first ever mass malaria vaccine rollout is beginning in Cameroon. The vaccine was approved by the World Health Organization and requires a total of four shots. According to the WHO, 600-thousand people die each year in Africa from malaria with children under five making up 80-percent of those deaths. In a piloted rollout in Kenya, Ghana and Malawi death tolls in vaccinated children dropped by 13-percent. While the vaccine is just over a third effective, when combined with mosquito nets and malaria tablets children now have 90-percent protection from malaria according to a UK study. At least 20 other African countries will be rolling out vaccine plans this year.

Study: Over Half Of U.S. Rural Hospitals Lack Maternity Care (Undated) -- More than half of the rural hospitals in the U.S. lack maternity care. That’s according to a recent report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform, which found that labor shortages and economic troubles are causing rural facilities to stop offering labor and delivery services. According to the report, more than 200 rural hospitals across the country have stopped delivering babies within the past decade. Researchers say mothers and babies in communities that don’t have access to local maternity care services are at a greater risk of complications and death.

Biden Makes Abortion Key Issue In 2024 Re-election Push (Manassas, VA) -- President Biden is making abortion rights a key issue of his 2024 re-election campaign. During a campaign event in Manassas, Virginia on Tuesday, Biden said Donald Trump and his conservative-majority Supreme Court ripped away abortion rights from women when it struck down Roe v. Wade. The president said so-called “MAGA Republicans” want to pass a national ban on abortion. Biden said he’d veto any national ban. .

Bill Introduced To Have Insurers Pay For Paxlovid (Albany, NY) -- A bill has been introduced in the New York State Legislature that calls for health insurers to cover co-payments for Paxlovid. The drug is used to help people who contract COVID-19 recover quicker, but co-payments for the medication can run as high as 140-dollars. The federal government previously covered that cost, but no longer does so. Paxlovid has been proven to reduce the risk of death from coronavirus by 73-percent. If approved, this measure would go into effect next year.in Mexico. The additional dozen cases since last Friday comes with new illnesses reported but no new hospitalizations. Last week the U.S. Food and Drug administration expanded its initial list of oyster producers to include operations in Sonora, in northwest Mexico and now Baja California.
