Seguin ISD names lone finalist for superintendent Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees has taken the next steps in officially filling the vacancy of school superintendent.

The board Tuesday voted 6-0 to name Dr. Veronica Vijil as the lone finalist for school superintendent.

Absent from the meeting was Board President Alejandro Guerra, who was ill.

Dr. Vijil says she is honored for the opportunity and can’t wait to continue the district’s positive momentum.

“My thoughts are really one of gratefulness. I have dedicated my life to working with children and this is just another opportunity to get to do the work that I love, the work that I believe I was called to do and it happens to be with a great board and so I think solidifying this team of eight really makes me proud and it really brings me a lot of joy,” said Vijil.

Selecting Dr. Vijil as the lone

finalist comes after no official search had been initiated by the trustees.

Instead, each board member publicly stated how they believed the district already had the right person doing the job.

Dr. Vijil, who initially was hired over the summer to serve as deputy superintendent, was appointed as the interim superintendent in late September following the resignation of former Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez.

Board Vice-President Carl Jenkins says Dr. Vijil has not only successfully carried the district well into this new year, but she has already proven in her past experiences that she is more than capable to do the job. He says the B rating obtained at her former school district, Fabens ISD speaks for itself and illustrates a commitment to serve students and their families.

Seguin ISD begins discussion of ordering a bond election Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A May bond election is more than a strong possibility for voters in the Seguin ISD. Although they opted to table an item that would have ordered a bond election, members of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees wanted to wait a little while longer until they could get clearer details behind a proposed bond election that could be as much as $5 million if not more.

That actual price tag, however, cannot be spelled out in stone until trustees meet again soon to discuss a plan - a plan that Interim Superintendent Veronica Vijil says is important to the district’s recent purchase of the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center.

“When we acquired the learning center, we did it knowing that it was going to take some money, some funds to build it up to a point where we can use it. We are not there and as we wait for a word from TASB (Texas Association of School Boards), who will be here on Friday to make an assessment of the facilities that exist there, then we will have a better idea on the amount that it is going to take to bring it up to speed and so this is why we needed to slow down. Sometimes we have to go slow to go fast and this is a case of exactly that. We want to wait for word from TASB to see what their assessment is and so we can provide the community more details about the amount that it is going to cost. Right now, it is in the millions. We suspect that it’s going to be upward of maybe even over $5 million,” said Vijil.

Dr. Vijil says if approved, the money will go toward

the necessary preparations required for student readiness at the SOLC. “So that the rope’s course can be used, that we have a phone system out there that works, we have communication, we have all of the things that we want our students to be able to benefit from -- that it’s secure and it’s safe for them to be there,” said Vijil.

Dr. Vijil adds that items for the SOLC make up the bulk of the bond request. She says the district is also expected to utilize other dollars for other important things district wide.

“As we had these discussions, we went back to let’s talk about things that are needed in this district that we can take to the community, to stakeholders, to get their feedback and really listen. I really believe that we have to listen to stakeholders as they are telling us ‘Is this the right time to go forward with a bond?’ We believe it is because we have received positive, positive communication about acquiring the learning center and so, let’s not buy something and not be able to use it. So, let’s get out there and we will explain it to them and then we will have the TASB report to help us with that support and that detail. Everything that we want to go for, that we want to discuss will benefit students across the district not just one particular group and that is our aim and that is our focus,” said Vijil.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees will meet again soon to discuss and possibly take action on the ordering of this bond election. If approved, that election will be held on Saturday, May 4.

“She is very fluent with what she does here in the district. She is very honest. She always comes to us with new ideas and tries to implement them through the school and those ideas aren’t radical. They are simple things like we need basic things. We need math. We need reading. We need to focus on that – the simple things.

She’s very personable. She comes from a district that was a B district and we will hopefully be there pretty soon.

That’s what my hope is,” said Jenkins.

By state law, the Seguin ISD cannot officially offer the job to Dr. Vijil until a 21-day waiting day. Now although the district did not launch an official search for the position, the district beginning today will post the position. Jenkins says this effort allows the Seguin ISD to still consider other potential candidates.

“We did check with our attorney here at the school and we are going to post the job opening for the 10 days required and during that 10 days, if we find anybody else, we will absolutely consider it,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins states that the financial impact of launching a superintendent search also weighed heavily in the board’s decision to forego a search and secure what the school district already had - and that was a top candidate.

In fact, with her elite experience, he says he’s surprised that others aren’t already knocking on her door.

“She’s highly qualified and if we did do a search, it would cost about $10,000 and I think we could better use that money in the district for simple things like substitute teachers and things like that. We need to

save the district money. This is trying times for sure,” said Jenkins. “ Meanwhile Dr. Vijil says she is committed to making the Seguin ISD successful and ensuring that it gets the recognition that it deserves.

“I’ve had a great string of experiences that have led me to this including my past experience in my previous district as superintendent. We stayed focused on the students, and we had a lot of things that really benefited the community, so we kept that in mind. We just kept our eye on the ball, and we dedicated ourselves to student outcomes - to not be distracted because there are a lot of distractions right now. It’s a border town that I came from and so it was a poor farming community that we had to keep in mind what the needs of that community were. So, as I learn about that, I’ll transfer that to see what the needs are here. We have an expanded number of programs here compared to where I came from and so we’ve got to take advantage and bank on everything we have here and make it successful,” said Vijil.

To better connect Dr. Vijil with the community, the 21-day waiting period according to Jenkins will also allow the public to meet and vet Dr. Vijil’s qualifications and vision for the school district.

“During those 21 days, we’ve asked that she have some community input, have some community meetings, meets with students and staff here in Seguin, leadership and try to see what her vision is,” said Jenkins.

Dr. Vijil continues in Seguin with 34 years of experience - 21 of those years in district leadership roles, 10 years as a principal and 4 years as a superintendent.

NYC Invests In Country’s Largest Medical Debt Program (New York, NY) -- New York City is investing in what will be the country’s largest medical debt relief program. Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan says New York City will partner with a nonprofit called RIP Medical Debt to invest 18-million-dollars over three years to relieve two billion dollars’ worth of unpaid medical bills. The one-time debt relief program will launch sometime this year and aims to wipe out medical debt for roughly half a million underinsured, uninsured, or low-income New Yorkers. Dr. Vasan says he has seen firsthand how medical debt forces patients to make impossible decisions, and no one should have to choose between paying their rent or getting the healthcare they need.

Ancient Zombie Viruses Could Be Unleashed (undated) -- Concerned scientists are focusing on ancient “zombie viruses” that could be unleashed. They fear the viruses, which are trapped in Arctic ice, could be unleashed due to global warming and fear once they are unfrozen could possibly start a deadly new pandemic. Youth Social Media Ban Gaining Momentum is Florida Legislature (Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida lawmakers will be voting on a law that would ban children under the age of 16 from using social media. The legislation has received bipartisan support so far in the Florida House with some Democrats wanting to sharpen language surrounding the bill. Under the proposed law, social media companies would also be required to end the accounts of minors within 90 days of knowing. Companies would also have to give a disclaimer about mental health effects of social media to children turning 16.

Oyster Illness Cases Rise (San Diego, CA) -- The San Diego County Health Department says 81 people are now confirmed to be infected with norovirus from oysters harvested in Mexico. The additional dozen cases since last Friday comes with new illnesses reported but no new hospitalizations. Last week the U.S. Food and Drug administration expanded its initial list of oyster producers to include operations in Sonora, in northwest Mexico and now Baja California.
