County urges quick installation of traffic light at dangerous intersection

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is putting pressure on TxDOT to help save lives at an area intersection.

The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court on Tuesday signed a resolution urging the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to install a traffic-control signal as soon as possible at the intersection of FM 1044 and FM 78, just east of Marion.

Bringing the issue to the forefront was County Commissioner Pct. 4 Stephen Germann. Germann says this intersection is one of the most if not the most dangerous intersection in the county.

“It’s unfathomable what is going on in this intersection. We are averaging a collision right now every two weeks. Most of the time, they are three car collisions. A few years ago, two people were killed. We can not get TxDOT to move forward. They are consistently ‘on their schedule.’

I’ve been told by TxDOT these things take time. I told TxDOT, the person dying in their car just ran out of time,” said Germann.

Although Germann has worked steadily to not lose site of this project, the issue of installing a traffic light initially began with Commissioner Pct. 1 Greg Seidenberger.

Seidenberger stated that although the plans are in place to get the job done, the work has not started and applauds Germann and the rest of the court for taking this latest action to help speed up the process.

Germann says 1,000 signatures “from citizens petitioning to install this light’ can be found on his desk.

He says citizens are calling daily and sending photos of accidents that are happening weekly. He says the county can not afford another fatal accident and would like the state to expedite this project for citizen safety.

Drivers encouraged to watch out for low water crossings Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Guadalupe County) -- Last week, it was the winter weather. This week, it is heavy rains that have kept the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department busy.

Carmen Davila, the county’s public information officer, says road and bridge crews have been busy putting up barricades in low-water crossing areas.

She says along with their extra efforts is a reminder to drivers to use extreme caution as crews continue to monitor dips, creeks, and low-water crossing areas throughout the county.

“Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department is reminding drivers to ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown!’ There are several roadblocks put up due to recent rains, and several vehicles have been attempting to make their way around safety barricades. It is important to avoid driving through flooded roadways as they may have a history of flooding and road beds may be washed out under flood waters,” said Davila.

Davila says while the ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown!’ phrase has been around for a while, she doesn’t want folks

to lessen its importance.

“Drivers are asked to stay alert, if there is water crossing over dips, ditches, or a low water crossing, turn around, and do not attempt to cross. A foot of water will float many vehicles and if water is rushing it will carry away most vehicles. Six inches of water can reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling,” said Davila.

Also warning drivers to watch out is Guadalupe County Chief Deputy Joshua Ray. Ray says these low water crossings can turn dangerous very quickly.

“We want drivers to slow down and be aware of possible flooding and leave with plenty of time to make it safely to their destination,” says Ray. “Stay informed about the weather conditions and plan to take an alternate route if you are aware of low crossing in your regular commute.

The National Weather Service is predicting more rain in the Guadalupe County area. Today’s forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain. Again, caution is encouraged in all parts of the county.

“They want to point the finger at the railroad and say that the railroad is the problem because the railroad is not working with them because the railroad control arms have to work simultaneously with the traffic light on 78.

I have been talking extensively with Henry Cuellar, our Congressman Henry Cuellar, and he has assured me -do not worry about the railroad. We will get the railroad to cooperate. This is just crazy. I mean if you put it off just for one year, that’s 25 wrecks if we average every two weeks,” said Germann.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says the bottom line is safety and adds that a tremendous amount of work has already taken place and all from an engineering standpoint -- environmental clearance, right-of-ways and safety.

“I am absolutely in favor of the resolution. It is extremely unsafe, traffic has increased dramatically over the last few years but I also want to manage our expectations that a resolution may help but in TxDOT’s eyes, they are moving fast. There are partners and we work with them and I know its cumbersome to say the least working with UP or any railroad when they have kind of original jurisdiction and authority over what goes over their rail and how traffic interacts there but again with some state leaders already giving involved with I think it was John Kuempel, Donna Campbell, a number of them that have pushed. Everybody wants to help.

Nobody has said ‘hey, hold on a second, we don’t need a light.’ It’s just the amount of time it is taking. Another couple of accidents is too many. We are almost at this point begging and urging TxDOT at the same time to see if they can move a little quicker. Even if it’s a couple of weeks faster, it’s better than nothing. It’s like just put the thing up please! Please, we are asking you. Do something quicker,” said Kutscher.

Kutscher says an increase in traffic and growth around that area only increases the risk of injury and death.

“With the TxDOT IH 10 Expansion project underway, even more drivers will be utilizing FM 78.

When the Union Pacific Railroad is in play and closes off access to FM 1044, a light will help alert drivers.

Communicating and telling commuters to be safe in this area is not enough. We must expedite this request for a traffic light to be installed on FM 78 and FM 1044 intersection to all agencies involved, including our state representatives, and this resolution will help,” said Kutscher.

The resolution approved Tuesday not only urges an expedited course of action to eliminate the unnecessary and hazardous conditions of that intersection but it also reduces the excessive congestion that is being experienced by all those who travel these roads. Plus, the resolution advises drivers to be aware of this specific intersection and to leave with plenty of time to get to their destination safely.

Jackson named McDonald’s American

(Seguin) -- John Jackson, who may be one of the most decorated athletes from Seguin High School, has picked up yet another honor.

Jackson on Tuesday was officially nominated as a McDonald’s AllAmerican.

Jackson, who was named the district MVP during the football season, is being recognized by McDonald’s for his play on the Matador basketball team. A few weeks ago, Jackson eclipsed the 2000-point plateau for his basketball career. He is currently averaging 30 points and 10 rebounds per game.

McDonald’s representatives on Tuesday joined in the celebration, honoring John alongside his teammates, family, and friends.

Sidney Lawrence Jeffreys, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at home in Seguin, Texas.

He was born on November 16, 1932, in Brady, Texas.

Sidney was a kind-hearted man who touched the lives of everyone he met. He had a contagious smile that could brighten up any room and a warm personality that made people feel instantly at ease in his presence. Sidney was known for his unwavering love and dedication to his family and friends.

He is survived by his adoring wife, Karin Jeffreys; their children, Sherry Mizumoto and Mark Jeffreys; and his cherished granddaughter, Angela Matthews. Sidney’s love for his family was boundless, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He leaves behind

Democrats Launch Abortion Rights Campaign (Undated) -- Democrats are starting up an abortion rights campaign this week on the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022. The court’s decision took away the constitutional right to an abortion and left the matter up to the states. Vice President Harris was in Wisconsin Monday to talk about what the Biden campaign calls a Republican assault on reproductive rights. She’ll be joined by President Biden Tuesday in Virginia for another rally.

Elizabeth Holmes Banned From Federal Health Programs (Washington, DC) -- Elizabeth Holmes is being banned from participating in any federal health programs for the next 90 years. Holmes, the founder of the blood testing company Theranos, was found guilty of multiple fraud and conspiracy charges relating to her business in 2022. She’s now serving a multiple-year sentence in prison and is facing thousands of dollars in restitution to victims of her crimes. On Friday, federal regulators announced Holmes has been banned from all federal health programs for the next nine decades -- effectively a lifetime ban.

Measles Outbreak Impacts New Jersey, PA, Washington (Undated) -- Medical experts are saying a growing number of measles outbreaks across the country has doctors concerned. The virus remained off the radar, until a recent surge in anti-vaccine activism. Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says these outbreaks are the quote, “canaryin-the-coal-mine.” Locally, there has been a rash of measles cases in Philadelphia since December. All cases have come from unvaccinated individuals. Also, cases have popped up in Delaware, New Jersey and Washington, DC .

Proposed Bill Would Allow Students To Take Mental Health Days (Harrisburg, PA) -- Pennsylvania students may soon be allowed to take mental health days. The Education Committee in the state House has voted to send a bill on to the full chamber that would help students who’ve dealt with emotional issues made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill, if passed, would allow students to take up to three mental health days during the school year without a doctor’s note.
