Local restaurant called out on social media Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – A local restaurant found itself in the middle of a social media frenzy Friday after a customer posted that they had denied a local man from dining inside.

Residents didn’t take long to share their disappointment with the Great Wall restaurant following the post by Liza Tijerina Heard.

Heard posted ‘wow, I am at a loss for words. I offered to buy this man a meal at Great Wall here

in Seguin and the guy in the front said that he would have to take it to go – that he couldn’t sit there and eat. It is freezing outside! I asked why he can’t eat it here and the guy up front said he has to take it to go! I let him know that – that was an awful response! I would make a post and let everyone know how they treat a paying customer.”

Area fire fighters respond to pair of fires Fire officials urging caution when using heating lamps Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Guadalupe County) – Fire safety warnings are being shared this week following a pair of fires reported during the same hour last week in Guadalupe County.

The first fire was reported at 3 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of Foster Lane. Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says the fire is being blamed on a heating lamp.

“When York Creek Fire Department arrived on scene, they observed a detached garage with smoke and fire showing from one of the rooms. The fire in that one ended up starting from a chicken coop that was next to the detached garage. The heat lamp inside that chicken coop was the cause of that. The chicken coop caught on fire and ended up catching the house on fire,” said Pinder.

Pinder says the fire left behind not only damaged property but dead chickens.

“The coop was a total loss. The structure had some fire damage on the exterior wall and the interior wall had some water and heat damage. Fire crews were able to get it in time and extinguish it,” said Pinder.

With the winter season expected to be even colder in the months ahead, Pinder advises residents to be extra careful when keeping themselves and their animals warm.

“We have seen a few of these heat lamp fires over the last few weeks. These heat lamps, when you are putting them out there, make sure they are a safe difference from either the bedding for the animals or the exterior walls of these structures, make sure the screws are tight. What we are seeing is the screw that is holding the clamp in the

heat lamp on comes loose and the heat lamp will fall into the bedding and usually that is what catches on fire is the bedding or hay or straw. We always recommend that you don’t use any hay or grass products. You have to keep your animals warm, and we understand that, so we have seen I think during the last week, three heat related –two heat lamps and one heater fire,” said Pinder.

Pinder says on this same day, it didn’t take long for area fire fighters to be called out to yet another fire.

He says this second fire was reported just minutes later at 3:27 p.m. near Kingsbury.

“While crews were responding to the Foster Lane fire, a second structure fire was reported at the 4900 block of Gravel Pit Road. I was the first arriving unit to respond to that fire. I just happened to be on the street at a different location. Upon arrival, I observed a fully involved structure fire. It was a residential structure unoccupied. By the time I got to the home, it was just about the time where the whole structure collapsed. It was a late 1800s, early 1900s home, solid wood frame so when it went up, it burned pretty quickly with all of that dry wood,” said Pinder.

Pinder says it’s been a busy season for fire fighters and applauds all efforts. Units responding to the Foster Ln fire include Kingsbury, Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue, Seguin, Lake Dunlap, McQueeney and the Luling Fire Department.

Those on hand to help battle the blaze on Gravel Pit include York Creek, San Marcos and Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue.

They didn’t have what I needed so I ran right back, and the man was still standing there. Nobody was there in the front to help him yet and then the manager came to the front, and I asked the man what kind of meat did he want? I couldn’t remember what he wanted but he wanted something specific like spaghetti or something else and I said, ‘they don’t have that here.’ I said what kind of meat do you like, and he said chicken and I said ‘how about chicken broccoli?’ He said okay, and then I said, ‘can we get him a chicken broccoli and I’m going to pay for it so that can eat it here’ and the (man) said ‘no. He cannot eat it here’ and that he had to take it to go. So, I said ‘why?’ He said, ‘he can’t. He can’t eat it here. He has to take it to go.’

I said he is a paying customer, and he can eat it in here and he said ‘no, that he cannot.’ So, the man stood there, and I told the (man) that I was going to blast him on Facebook and that it was disgusting and that it was unacceptable,” said Heard.

Since then, the manager, Marco Yang, has publicly apologized for his handling of the situation and cites a language barrier as the main cause for the misunderstanding.

“Sometimes, it’s the language problem. So, we allow him to come in to eat. We allow so he can come to my restaurant to eat. So sometimes (it’s) the language problem. Like I say, he can’t or he can not and today is Friday. It is busy earlier in the morning and the lady is asking me like can he sit in here to eat and he pay for. I say he can and she probably heard he can not and I go straight into the kitchen and after I came out, she left. So, I don’t know what’s going on and she just post it,” said Yang.

The manager went on to explain how the gentleman has eaten inside the restaurant before. He says folks typically invite him to join them at their table when he approaches them outside for money. Yang also stated that it has been at least two weeks since he had dined inside.

He says the man also often comes inside to ask for plastic utensils. When asked how often he stands outside, Yang says it’s ‘every day.’

On top of sharing their disappointment, many comments went a step further by mentioning how employees, including Yang, who often works the front counter, were rude at the restaurant.

They say this is why it doesn’t surprise them about what Heard posted.

In response, Yang tells KWED that he apologizes for the rude service and says while some of it is also tied to being a language barrier, he can see how it comes off as rudeness to customers. However, he does accept some of this blame and shares how the restaurant would be working on improving its customer service.

“I need to apologize for everybody and even if this is true or not true, I have to apologize,” said Yang.

A few hours later that day, Great Wall furthered its attempt to publicly apologize by posting a video of the man who was shown dining inside the restaurant.

free food. I have eaten here before.”

Despite Great Wall’s statements, Heard says she is confident in what was said that day and even asked Yang several times just so that she was clear on what he was saying. (I) “was shocked. He kept telling me no. No, he had to take it to go.”

Heard, whose post also accompanied a photo of the man, says she is troubled by how anyone can be turned away.

“Kindness is free. In the world that we live in, there’s enough hate. There’s just enough ugliness in the world.

You don’t have to add to it. It’s cold outside and we just all need to come together as a community. We can help each other and it’s just kindness. Kindness goes a long way and that man – if you would have (seen) how he looked, I felt like crying. If you would have (seen) how he looked, it wasn’t right. It really wasn’t,” said Heard.

While it was assumed by some – via the comments -- that the man was homeless, KWED has learned that the Seguin man is not homeless but is known to frequent the spot outside Goodwill where he does regularly ask for money.

Meanwhile, the social media post did not only cause an uproar by those who vowed never to eat at the restaurant again. Some came to the restaurant’s defense, believing that it did understand that it made a mistake and wanted to do better, while others agreed with Yang and felt that the language barrier was at fault.

Yet, in the end, Heard does not regret her post and says she would do it all over again if she had to. She says if anything, folks were reminded about humanity and the importance of taking care of one another.

Report: Cowboys Will Not Extend Mike McCarthy Before Next Season (Frisco, TX) -- Jerry Jones is planning to make Mike McCarthy earn his next contract in Dallas. ESPN reports that McCarthy is not expected to receive any sort of extension prior to next season and will coach the 2024 season on an expiring deal. The 60-year-old coach has led Dallas to three straight 12-win seasons, but has gone just 1-and-3 in the postseason. The Cowboys finished the regular season at 12-and5 before being eliminated by the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card round.

Texans Lose To Ravens In AFC Divisional Round (Baltimore, MD) -- The Texans had their season come to an end in Baltimore. Houston lost to the Ravens 34-10 in the AFC Divisional round at M&T Bank Stadium. C.J. Stroud completed 19-of-33 passes for 175 yards in the losing effort. Houston’s lone trip to the end zone came on a 67-yard punt return TD by

Steven Sims in the second quarter. The Texans still have yet to play in an AFC Championship Game. They will now look forward to the offseason.

Rockets Lose To Celtics (Houston, TX) -- The Rockets failed to pull out a win at home. Houston lost to the Boston Celtics 116-107 at the Toyota Center.

Alperen Sengun recorded a triple-double, finishing with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Dillon Brooks scored a game-high 25 points, while Amen Thompson chipped in 15 points and 14 boards. The Rockets have lost four of five and sit 11th in the West at 20-and22. They host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

Mavericks Host Celtics Tonight (Dallas, TX) -- The Mavericks are back on their home hardwood. Dallas will host Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics tonight at the American Airlines Center. The Mavs have not played since last Wednesday, when they suffered a 127-110 loss on the road to the Los Angeles Lakers. Their game against the Golden State Warriors last Friday was postponed. The Mavs are sixth in the West at 24-and-18. Dante Exum is doubtful for tonight’s contest, while Seth Curry is listed as questionable.

Stars Lose To Islanders In OT (Elmont, NY) -- The Stars suffered an overtime loss on the road. Dallas fell to the New York Islanders 3-2 in OT at UBS Arena. Nils Lundkvist and Jason Robertson found the back of the net in the losing effort. Scott Wedgewood allowed three goals and made 24 saves in net.

The Stars have lost two of their last three games and sit third in the Central Division at 27-13and-6. They wrap up their four-game road trip tomorrow night against the Detroit Red Wings.

College Basketball Roundup (Undated) -- College basketball action continues this week. Fifth-ranked Houston visits Number-19 BYU tomorrow night. The Cougars sit at 16-and-2. Sidney Lawrence Jeffreys, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at home in Seguin, Texas.

He was born on November 16, 1932, in Brady, Texas.

Sidney was a kind-hearted man who touched the lives of everyone he met. He had a contagious smile that could brighten up any room and a warm personality that made people feel instantly at ease in his presence. Sidney was known for his unwavering love and dedication to his family and friends.

He is survived by his adoring wife, Karin Jeffreys; their children, Sherry Mizumoto and Mark Jeffreys; and his cherished granddaughter, Angela Matthews. Sidney’s love for his family was boundless, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He leaves behind

DEA Releases 2023 Fentanyl Stats (Undated) -- Fentanyl pill seizures rose 83-percent last year in Iowa, Nebraska, and several other Midwestern states. NY Midwife Fined $300K For Faking Giving Kids Vaccinations (Baldwin, NY) -- A Long Island midwife is fined three-hundred-thousand-dollars for faking giving kids vaccinations. Jeanette Breen, who runs Baldwin Midwifery, falsified the vaccine records of nearly 15-hundred students at potentially three-hundred schools, mostly on Long Island, but also in New York City, Westchester and western NewYork. She gave the kids homeopathic oral medication instead of shots to protect against such childhood illnesses as measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria and polio. Costco, Sam’s Club At Center Of Salmonella Outbreak (Portland, OR) -- Cases of salmonella infections nationwide connected to charcuterie meats are on the rise. The CDC reports 47 cases have been confirmed in 22 states since they began tracking the outbreak earlier this month. There are two products involved.
