Mass vaccinations events may come soon

City, County, GRMC seek 5,000 COVID-19 doses as part of initial distribution plan

(Seguin) -- Local officials have put together a plan that will allow a large number of COVID-19 vaccinations to be given to the public.

The joint mass vaccine plan was submitted this week to the Texas Department of State Health Services. It’s a collaboration between Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC), Guadalupe County and the city of Seguin.

says they have already identified a site for the mass vaccination events in Seguin, and they are working on finding at least two other sites in Guadalupe County.

“Over the past few weeks, the county has been seeing the need for more COVID vaccines here in Guadalupe County. We have seen Bexar County and surrounding areas receiving these large allocations and we wanted to make sure that the citizens of Guadalupe County are also having that option,” said Pinder.

Local officials submit vaccine distribution plan to the state

COVID-19 continued from Page 1 This planning has been going on for weeks, and the official plan has now been presented to the state -- with hopes that the state will quickly look to provide more vaccines for people in this community.

“So what we’ve been tasked with and what we’ve been working for several weeks is finalizing a plan to present to the Department of State Health Service Texas Division of Emergency Management to show them that Guadalupe County is ready for the COVID vaccine so what we’ve done is we’ve partnered with GRMC, the city of Seguin and presented a plan showing that we will use the Seguin Coliseum and we would be able to push over 1,000 vaccines a day to that location and the plan that was submitted (Tuesday) provided the state that information,” said Pinder.

The plan calls for 1,000 vaccines to be given per day, but this is all dependent upon the state approving and then sending the allocations to Guadalupe County.

Pinder says they have done as much as they can to try to get more doses of the vaccines for people in this area.

“The request was submitted to the state was a request for 5,000 doses to be run through the Coliseum location. One of the things the state will look at when we receive the allocation is how quickly we can get through them. So, the plan that we presented is showing the state that we can go through 1,000 doses a day depending on how fast we can get that injection into peoples’ arms. There is a waiting time so there’s all kinds of factors that need to be addressed and

those will be outlined out the first few days whenever this site becomes available, but after we can show the state that we can push that vaccine, we would then request additional vaccines of larger quantities of 5,000, 10,000 to show the state, ‘hey, we can push this out’ and if we can get 10,000 vaccines, the site would be open for 10 days. If we get 20,000, the site would be open for 20 days. That’s the kind of presentation and a plan that we presented,” said Pinder.

There is a short turn around between the time when the state would notify them of the allotment, and when they would actually deliver it. There’s also a limited window for how long they have to distribute the vaccines once they are received. Pinder says that’s one of the reasons why this is such a fluid situation.

“That’s one of the reasons we have partnered up with GRMC because the best people to handle the vaccine is the hospital folks.

So, the vaccine that we submitted for was the Moderna vaccine. It is not the vaccine that requires the ultra-cold storage and part of the plan is the hospital coming in and basically being the pharmacy rep, being the ones doing the draws of the vaccine, handling the vaccine and then the partnership that we developed with the city and the county is you would have city staff, paramedics, office staff, county staff, security, police officers that is doing the remainder of the outside job tasks but the hospital would then control the actual Moderna vaccine,” said Pinder.

Pinder says part of the challenge is that the vaccine’s high efficacy rate is only achieved after a

second shot is given. That means the first shot will not do much to protect you from the virus. Pinder says you need the second booster shot to really be able prevent the spread of the virus.

“So, if you get the first dose, you have to go back to get your second dose. Right now, if you are getting your first dose at any of the locations, you are then going back to the same location and getting the second dose. The folks that were able to receive the vaccine (Thursday) and Friday in Schertz, they are going to have to go back to Schertz and get that vaccine so it’s the same thing when we set up this site here in Seguin. You’ll be able to get that dose out of the Coliseum whenever we get it and 28 days later, you’ll come to the same location and get your second dose,” said Pinder.

Even if the requested doses are given, it’s going to take months to get everyone vaccinated. Pinder says we are still very early on in the process, and the only people who can be vaccinated at this time are those who are healthcare workers, those who are over the age of 65, or those who are over the age of 16 and who have a chronic underlying medical condition.

Pinder says the county, the city and the hospital are all committed to helping to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine is delivered to our community as soon as possible, but he says people are going to need to be patient until more doses start to arrive. He says this initial plan only focuses on the Seguin location at the Coliseum, but he says they are working on more sites across the county.

“We have been working with the

city of Schertz, the city of Cibolo, the city of New Braunfels all those different surrounding cities and even including Comal County Public Health to try to establish other locations that would suite all people in the community for vaccine sites. We have not confirmed on other locations that is why we have not announced other locations. We have some locations in the works in the Cibolo area, the northern part of the county and the city of New Braunfels area. The locations that we are looking at have to be large locations,” said Pinder.

The logistics of setting up these mass vaccination sites starts with finding the right location that will provide adequate staging and that would allow them to provide 1,000 shots per day. He says these locations have to be large and easily accessible.

“We have to look at locations with large parking spaces to put thousands of people through there in a day. We have to have places, buildings, at least eight thousand square feet so we can have people spaced out because the waiting period after you get the vaccine is 15 minutes if you have a reaction or 30 minutes if you have a reaction or 15 minutes if you don’t have a reaction so you have to be able to wait and watch people and that’s why we are looking at large areas,” said Pinder.

Big sites, like the Coliseum, are definitely a huge part of the local vaccine distribution strategy, but Pinder says they have also built in some smaller sites that will help them get more shots into the arms of local people.

TLU’s Balderas, Lister among top SCAC hoops performers in opening week

(Seguin) - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference named its first Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the 2020-21 season and included a pair of Texas Lutheran student-athletes on the accompanying list of outstanding performers.

TLU forward Caleb Lister was named among the conference’s outstanding performers. The senior averaged 12.5 points and eight rebounds in the Bulldogs 1-1 road split against Centenary.

The Women’s Player of the Week award went to Austin College’s Ally Longaker, who averaged 15.5 points on 63.6 percent shooting, 10 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in a pair of wins over the University of Dallas.

Both Texas Lutheran basketball teams have the open date in their schedules this week. The Bulldogs return to SCAC action next weekend, Jan. 29-30, with Olivia Balderas and Caleb Lister Friday and Saturday home games against pointers as well after draining 10 of her Trinity at Jim Schuler Court/ Memorial 15 attempts.

No. 6 ranked Navarro girls chase 16th straight win in district clash vs. La Vernia, Friday game to air on KWED

(Geronimo) - Navarro looks to move a step closer to the District 27-4A girls basketball title and complete a two-game head-to-head sweep of La Vernia when the teams square off at the Navarro Events Center on Friday.

The Panthers own the No. 6 ranking in the TGCA state poll for Class-4A. Coach Darrell Harborth’s squad carries a 22-1 overall record, a 4-0 district mark, and a 16-game winning streak into Friday’s matchup after rolling past Cuero 50-30 on Tuesday.

La Vernia, coached by Kyle Sivadon, has been state-ranked at times this season, but the 15-5 Bears dropped out of the most recent polls after a 2-2 start in district play. La Vernia lost a 37-36 nail-biter to Cuero last Friday and had an open date in the schedule earlier this week.

Navarro won the first meeting between the teams 61-51 in La Vernia on Jan. 5 The Bears’ top individual player is junior guard Helana Chadwick, who shared District MVP honors with Navarro’s Tatum Harborth last year.

Chadwick enters Friday averaging 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 4.5 steals per game. Harborth, a sophomore, paces Navarro in scoring with a 14.7 average and also produces 5.0 rebounds and 3.1 steals per outing.

Sophomore point guard Laylin Sturm has been a catalyst for the Panthers as well, averaging 12.3 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.8 steals per contest.

Chadwick’s top La Vernia teammate has been 5’11” sophomore Trannon Izworski, last year’s District Newcomer of the Year, with 9.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game.

Maples, Sr. Daniel “Danny” E. Maples, Sr., age 70 of Seguin, Texas passed away January 17, 2021 peacefully at home surrounded by his family and loved ones.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and friend to many. Danny was born on October 12, 1950 in San Antonio, Texas to Doris May and Hugh Wilson Maples. He graduated from Navarro High School in 1969 and later obtained his Master Electrical license certificate in 1974.

Danny, his brother Steve and father Hugh, worked together to make Maples Electric Company a successful electrical contractor construction company where they did commercial and residential electrical work in San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and the surrounding cities. In 1995 Danny achieved his dream of opening his own residential electric business, Walnut Springs Electric in Seguin. Danny was stilling working and providing his knowledge and expertise until his cancer diagnosis, Glioblastoma Brain Tumor Cancer in 2020.

Danny was a prankster and loved to live in the moment. August 1969, with the aid of sister, Darlene, Danny and his high school sweetheart, Jo Ann, eloped to get married. Danny and Jo Ann have enjoyed each other for 51 years. They found enjoyment from every aspect of life together. Danny enjoyed hunting, whether hiking or sitting in a blind, fishing, and going to antique auctions with his wife. But mostly he enjoyed automobiles; buying to enjoy for awhile then selling for someone else to enjoy.

Danny is preceded in death by his mother, Doris May, step mother, Geraldine, father, Hugh and mother and father in-law, Loraine Lehmann Kight and J.R. Kight.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years Jo Ann; daughter, Tammy Drown and husband David; son, Daniel “Danny” Maples, Jr. and wife Monika; sister, Darlene Gregory; brother, Steve Maples, Sr. and wife Sharon; grandchildren, Michaela Drown and partner Jeff Garcia, Megan Drown, Amanda Drown and Zoe Maples; great-grandchildren, Adrian, Andrew and Armani; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

His family would like to give special thanks to his

hospice nurse, Sara Vogel and Sandra Martin. Also, to the Guadalupe Regional Hospice nurses and staff for their care and kindness.

A walk-through line visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jeremy Roy and the Rev. Roy Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Greenman

William “Bill” Charles Greenman, age 80 of Seguin, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021.

Bill was born on August 25, 1940 in Shang Hai, China to Dr. Robert Brownell Greenman, US Navy and Clara Mae (Minns) Greenman. The family was stationed in Shang Hai until the war heated up. At that time, Clara returned to her home in Oceola Mills, PA with Bill and his 15-month older brother, Bob. Dr Greenman was taken prisoner by the Japanese for 4 years but was eventually reunited with his family after the war.

As a military brat Bill moved often. This resulted in him having two different senior high school rings as he moved between his Jr and Sr year.

He graduated from Southside High School in Long Island, New York. He attended Clemson University from 1958-1963. Bill majored in Pre-Med, PreDental and Biology. Bill was a member of the school honor guard for several years and at 6’4”, he always carried the American flag.

He joined the Air Force in 1963. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1964 with a degree in Russian. He was stationed in Pakistan with the Air

As a boy, Bill wanted to be a pilot and he built model airplanes with fastidious care. He was a huge fan of daring test pilots like Chuck Yeager. His dream came to an end after growing 2 more inches after high school and getting the measles which affected his eyesight. After choosing family instead of taking a government job, he began a long career in wholesale and retail sales. He worked for Woolco, Kiddie City Toys, Kids Kounty, Gund & Robin Woods Dolls. He was the “Doll Guy” when he was featured on QVC selling dolls. He was well known by doll collectors all over. His last career was in the mattress industry.

He worked at Mattress Discounters in Pennsylvania.

Then he moved back to San Antonio where he worked for Mattress Firm until his health forced him into retirement in 2018.

Bill loved watching college and NFL football. He could recall the stats better than anyone. He made incredibly detailed spread sheets and loved his team for Fantasy football. He was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan and he and his daughter competed each week to pick the winners for all the games. He loved the Boston Red Sox and Ted Williams was his favorite baseball player. He was known for leaving thoughtful notes and sending encouraging cards to brighten people’s day. Bill will fondly be remembered for the thousands and thousands of Christmas cookies he made and delivered to his co-workers and friends over the years.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents and his son William Charles Greenman Jr. Survivors include: his daughter Laura Michelle Greenman Stahl, daughter Sarah Elizabeth Greenman, Grandchildren Andrew and Lacie Stahl and Hannah Leilani Stahl and William (Will) Charles Greenman III, Great Granddaughter Kimber Leilani Stahl, brother Robert Brownell Greenman II many other family members and countless friends. Private services and interment will be held at a later date.

Christopher John Medina was called home to the Lord on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the age of 48. He was born to John Valadez and Gregoria Medina on August 14, 1972 in Seguin, Texas

She will be remembered as a long-time employee of Guadalupe County Tax Office. Virginia loved to quilt and made many beautiful quilts in her lifetime.

Christopher is preceded in death by his stepfather, Ramiro Sanchez; sister, Frances Medina and grandson, Josiah.

Survivors include her loving husband of 53 years who was always by her side, Robert “Bob” Undeutsch; sons, Mark Undeutsch and partner Nicole Watts and Marty Undeutsch and partner Heather Cummings; granddaughter who knew and loved her as Mimi, Carter Elizabeth Undeutsch; brother-in-law, Walter Undeutsch and wife Mary; sisterin-law, Linda Thabes and husband John; several nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends.

Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, and Mimi and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

He is survived by his spouse, Myesha; his father, John Valadez and mother, Gregoria Medina; children, Alyssa, Stastany, Christopher Jr.; stepdaughter, Kailah; grandchildren, Ayden, Alyana and Jenesis; his brothers and sisters, Mark and spouse Lilia, Esther and spouse Johnny, John Jr. and spouse Renee, April and spouse Robert and Crystal. Christopher is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Chris loved his small town, Seguin. He was a hard worker for Guadalupe County. He worked hard to provide a good life for his children and spouse. He was so happy he found his soulmate. He really cherished and loved his children very much. He enjoyed working on cars and he especially loved the cars he owned. He loved cruising down the Seguin roads on late night cruises. Chris had a one of a kind personality, and for that he was loved by many people! He will truly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Palmer Mortuary. All services will conclude in the chapel on Friday evening. The funeral home chapel can only accommodate 50 people at once due to COVD19 restrictions, please make plans to walk through and pay your respects to allow everyone the opportunity to visit with the family.

As per CDC protocols social distancing of 6 feet is required and all guests attending services are required to wear a face covering upon entering the funeral home.

Virginia Ann Undeutsch, age 78 of Kingsbury, joined our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

Arlene Joyce Jung Lenz, age 91 of New Braunfels, formerly of Seguin, passed away on January 12, 2021. Arlene was born on November 24, 1929 in Comal County to Bertha (Seay) and William H. Jung.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Valentin Hermann “Val” Lenz, her parents, and her brothers Curtis J. Jung and Merlin Jung.

Survivors include son, Randy Lenz (Carolyn) of New Braunfels and daughter, Donna Loflin of North Port, FL; sister, Margaret Schievelbein; grandchildren, Matthew Loflin (Angel), Sarah Sears (Sean), Wesley Hart, and Kevin Lenz (Audrey); great grandchildren; Mylah Loflin, Rylan Sears, Grayson Sears, Nolan Lenz, and Cole Lenz; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Arlene spent her entire life in Seguin and was a life-long member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church. She will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved her. Baker

Glenn Henry Baker, age 96 of Kingsbury, passed away on January 15, 2021. Glenn was born on December 28, 1924 in Kingsbury, Texas to Lola (Govett) and Patrick Henry Baker. He was a graduate of Dowdy School, Class of 1942. He married Ola Mae Reneau on October 15, 1949. In his younger years, Glenn and Ola enjoyed taking their four boys fishing at their camphouse in Ottine on the San Marcos River. He also taught the four boys to hunt and up until he passed, he loved hearing the stories of their hunts.

After his retirement in 1979, he enjoyed raising pure bred Charolais Cattle and traveling to the consignment sales, building his herd with top notch cattle. He and Ola enjoyed traveling all over the US and Canada in their motorhome, and once flew to Germany to meet their friends living there who took them to Italy, France and Austria.

Glenn is preceded in death by his son, Dennis Baker and wife Debbie, his parents and his brother, Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law, Billy Perryman.

Rangel Alfredo Salas Rangel went to be with the Lord January 14, 2021. Born in Seguin, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Maxine Rangel, brothers Rodolpho Rangel and Richard Rangel.

He leaves behind his sister, Josefina (Rangel) Lehmann his niece Elizabeth Escareno and great niece Madison Westenbarger, nephew Rodolpho (Rudy)-Shelly Rangel his great nephew Nicholas Rangel and great niece Mckenna , niece Dominga and James Arevalo and his great nephews, Jeremiah Arevalo, Azariah Arevalo, and his great nieces, Crystal Avila, Jerilyn Tovar-Eddie, Ariel Valadez-Jesus, Adley Arevalo and fiancé Kreston Joyner.

He was a United State Marine Veteran, LCpl. His career was welding and the love of fishing.

If you were looking for uncle Freddy he would be at Starcke Park under the oak tree fishing and having a good time. He was a survivalist.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends; especially his great great nephews and great great nieces who got to spend the last 2 years getting to know him.

Gloria “YaYa” Gutierrez Cano of Seguin, Texas gained her wings on January 12, 2021 at the age of 71.

Gloria was born on October 25, 1949 in Pearsall, Texas to Jesus Gutierrez and Maria Trinidad Gutierrez.

Gloria is preceded in death by her parents; brother,

Luensmann

Roland Henry Luensmann, age 87 of Marion, Texas joined our Lord and Savior on Monday, January 4, 2021. Roland was born in Bexar County, Texas on July 31, 1933 to Henry and Alma (Schultz) Luensmann.

Roland attended Clemens School in Zuehl, Tx. He was a lifelong member of Redeemer United Church of Christ, being baptized in 1934, and confirmed in 1948. He was a man dedicated to Christ and served our Lord with grace. Roland proudly served in the U.S. Army and spent time in Korea and Japan. He retired from Texas State Dept. of Highway Services after 37 years. After his retirement he drove school buses for six years for Marion High School.

Roland was affiliated with many organizations, he was a member of Sons of Hermann Lodge Zuehl 163, he was also a lifetime member of Bexar Social Club. He married the love of his life Anna Dell Reininger on April 2, 1960.

Roland enjoyed many other activities in his life, he enjoyed fishing, dancing, bowling and trips to the casino’s. But there was no greater love to Roland than the Lord and his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Roland is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Linda Koltermann and husband George, Alice Walter and husband Willie, Howard Luensmann, John Luensmann and Edgar Luensmann and wife Glory Ann, brother-in-law, Virgil Ploch, and nephews, Allan Koltermann and Jeff Luensmann.

Seguin Coliseum chosen as mass vaccination site

We are looking at the KC halls. We are looking at churches. We want to be able to take this vaccine when it becomes available to the smaller communities. We want to make sure that everybody has an opportunity to get the vaccine wherever they are at. Some of the ideas that we have had is maybe go out to the smaller communities and give the vaccine to the folks and then have them come to the larger sites to get their second dose. All those things are still being worked out but right now, the plan that was submitted is for the Coliseum in Seguin and in collaboration with the hospital,” said Pinder.

The city of Schertz Friday will be hosting its last vaccine distribution event for the week. Schertz only had 975 doses to give, and it required that people sign up online to make an appointment. All of those doses were claimed in just a couple of minutes, and people who didn’t have access to a computer were all but shut out of the process. Pinder says the plan that they have submitted to the state won’t allow that to happen going forward. He says they will make it easier for everyone to get signed up.

“In the plan, we are going to be offering both online and phone registration. So, one of the things that we are seeing is people don’t have access to the internet.

People aren’t fast enough on the computer to get the links, so we want to make sure that we are providing that alternate source to make an appointment. So, one of the things currently, we are in the process of setting up a phone bank system when we do get notification, allocation for vaccines, we are going to put out a call

Schlueter Del Schlueter, one of the sweetest men to ever walk the earth, left us yesterday morning while sitting in his chair; probably laughing at Seinfeld re-runs. Del, the 1951 Seguin high school class president was one of those people who never met a stranger. It would take him 15 minutes to get to his table at El Ranchito, because he had to stop and talk to so many people on the way. The 1955 graduate of the University of Texas School of Pharmacy and avid Longhorn fan met his wife Mary Willingham at the University and they married shortly after graduation. He recently received a letter from the Texas Exes mentioning that he was one of the oldest living season ticket holders.

Mary and Del moved back to Seguin in 1968 where he worked at, and eventually purchased Williams Drug Store. Del was a true “Girl Dad”. He loved raising their 3 daughters, Jamie, Sarah, and Anndy, followed by their 2 granddaughters Lauren and Kelsey. (All of whom, he was proud to say, also graduated from UT.)

In addition to the local plans for vaccination events, the state is also working on creating large scale vaccine hubs in 28 metropolitan areas. It also has plans to create hubs in 206 smaller communities around the state. All those details are still being worked out by state officials. Pinder says they will be providing regular updates on the vaccine distribution, and they will continue to share that information with the public.

Meanwhile, local officials are sharing a resource from John Hopkins Hospital.

The famous Baltimore based medical facility has been tracking COVID-19 totals and providing resources to help the public understand the battle against the virus.

This latest resource is called what you need to know. It provides all the details about the vaccines, how they work, how they need to be distributed and it looks at how long it will take to get enough people vaccinated to really begin to defeat COVID-19. Pinder says until they get everyone vaccinated, it’s important people continue to wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash their hands frequently.

After the death of his wife Mary, in 2010, he married Sandra Gingrich Hollamon, also of Seguin and added 4 stepdaughters to his “Girl Dad” collection; Lecia Schreiwer, Shannon Dukes, Melyn Smethurst and Mary Grace Hair.

The “Mighty Fisherman” enjoyed nothing more than to hook a big black bass, of which there were many. He also loved watching Texas High School Football, and was the president of the Matador booster club during the Jack Taylor days. Del was always an active member of his church and the community, and an overall great guy. His loving heart, great sense of humor and quick wit will be sorely missed.

Delbert Ralph Schlueter, was born in Seguin, Texas on March 21, 1933 to Ferdinand Schlueter, and Linda Salge Schlueter. His parents, his brother Virgil Schlueter, and his wife Mary Willingham Schlueter preceded him in death.

His loving wife, Sandra Gringrich Hollamon, his daughters, Jamie Schlueter, Sarah Jones and her Husband Rex, Anndy Shashack and her husband Dan, and his granddaughters, Lauren Malouf and Kelsey Koehler, survive him. His brother’s children, Frank Schlueter and wife Anne, Greta Drennan, and Harriett “Missy” Schlueter, also survive him.

A memorial service will be planned near his birthday in

March. He was never one to pass up an opportunity to celebrate.

Joaquin Valley region’s available ICU capacity is stuck at zero. The Northern California region continues to maintain some breathing room with more than 30-percent of its ICU beds available. The Sacramento region was removed from the state’s stay-at-home order last week although the region’s available ICU capacity is around nine-percent. Health officials say the region is projected to climb back above the necessary 15-percent threshold in the coming weeks. The Bay Area region stands at about seven-and-a-half-percent.

A Scream Hotline Launched To Give People Stress Outlet (Sacramento, CA) -- Those struggling with stress during the pandemic are getting a new outlet. It’s a hotline solely made to scream. School teacher Chris Gollmar launched the Just Scream hotline on Election Day. Calls are recorded and posted on its website.
