Chet Garner, of The Daytripper, shares what makes Seguin so unique

(Seguin) – A PBS television show host has pinned Seguin on the Lone Star map as “one of the” places you will want to visit. Actually, Chet Garner, host of The Daytripper, says Seguin’s significance and uniqueness are more of a reminder for its current residents.

He says because we live here, the city’s many contributions and historical impressions are often overlooked.

Garner shared his comments about Seguin during his guest appearance on the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce’s virtual Centennial Celebration.

Garner, known for his show which introduces us to all parts of Texas, shared his comments – comments that were warranted following his own visit to Seguin more than a year and a half ago. In fact, the Texas travel show segment that featured Seguin landed the TV show host with yet another Emmy.

While he was bummed that the pandemic prevented him from visiting Seguin again, Garner was still appreciative to speak with those watching the virtual program in celebration of the chamber’s 100-year anniversary.

“When you look at the lens of a town, you go ‘wow, there are truly stories to tell’ and that couldn’t be more true than with a town like Seguin. You guys have some of the richest, deepest stories in your town. I mean just think about it, culture -- Juan Seguin, one of the absolute unsung heroes of the Texas Revolution and that story will move you to tears about how he delivered the letter from the Alamo and then went on to become a hero of San Jacinto. You guys got the largest nutcracker museum in the world.

You’ve got the largest pecan in the world. You’ve got three of the largest pecans in the world – not to mention just your square.

Well, it’s actually not a square but with your plaza, it’s a rectangle.

You’ve got your rectangle, your history, your people, your culture.

It’s just absolutely phenomenal,” said Garner.

Garner says its history and uniqueness are just the first things he looks at when selecting a community to feature on his program. He says the next thing is of course, the food.

“Then, let’s move into food. I mean Guero’s (Backyard) Tacos, come on. If you want barbecue, how about Burnt Bean? How about Davila’s? If you want to talk about steak, you get steak all over the place. You get sushi, Mexican food. Some of the best meals that I’ve there, I mean Kirby’s burgers, absolutely phenomenal.

The next big component for him is the outdoors and recreational space. Garner says with the Guadalupe River running through the heart of the city, Seguin pretty much gets to check off all the boxes.

“Then you talk about outdoors.

Well, it doesn’t get much better than the Guadalupe River. I mean one of our most beautiful, pristine rivers goes right through your town. You’ve got Son’s Island which is an island on a river which is an absolute oasis up there. All of those things together make Seguin such a wonderful place,” said Garner.

Not only should local residents continue to be proud of Seguin but according to Garner, they should also learn to embrace their role as a storyteller. He says you don’t ever want to minimize where you are from.

“Everyone of you is an ambassador for your city and you may already know that but more than just ambassadors, like me, you guys are storytellers and

one of my favorite quotes goes something like this ‘all of us are storytellers. Some of us just don’t know it yet’ and the truth is we go through life, telling stories at every turn. When someone ask, ‘where are you from?’ You say ‘well I’m from this little town east of San Antonio.’ Well, you just told them a story that minimized your town versus ‘we are from one of the most vibrant cities called Seguin on the Guadalupe River.’ Right there, you told them a story and you made them want to learn more about the city you come from,” said Garner.

Garner says of course our role as a storyteller is what will preserve our new history – history that is waiting for us to tackle during this new century of living, playing and doing business in Seguin.

“Just like Texas, Seguin has a long history of storytelling. I mean you guys are celebrating 100 years at the chamber of commerce telling the story of Seguin both to the people who live in Seguin but to the people who live across east San Antonio, in San Antonio, people who live across Texas and the people who live across

the country and even the world.

So you guys carry on a very long tradition of storytelling. I was looking at the timeline. It actually goes back even before that. You guys have been telling the story of Seguin for a very long time and here’s the most interesting part, the story is always changing and with Seguin, it’s getting better.

Seguin is sitting in what I call the sweet spot in being able to see trends all across Texas. If you are within 30-40 miles of what is a booming metroplex now and you have historic assets just like Seguin, the sky is the limit. You guys are now tasked with the objective of one, growing smart and also keeping telling the story and retaining that story. It truly is something special,” said Garner.

In addition to Garner’s guest appearance, the chamber’s virtual program and banquet recognized business and community partners who helped make a difference in 2020. It also took a trip down memory lane sharing the history behind its businesses and those who helped plant their seeds.

Former TLU volleyball standout Megan Lee named to SCAC’s 30th Anniversary Team

(Seguin) - Texas Lutheran alumna Megan Lee has been named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary Women’s Volleyball Team.

Lee, a two-time SCAC Backrow Player of the Year, is TLU’s all-time leader in career digs, with 2,490.

Lee also holds TLU records for single-season digs (759 in 2014), single-season digs per game (6.38 in 2014), career digs per game (5.57), and singlematch digs (52 in a five-set match in 2014 against the University of Dallas).

Her three years as the TLU libero produced three

of the five highest single-season digs totals in Bulldog history.

Her single-season dig totals for 2014, 2012, and 2013 rank first, fourth, and fifth, respectively, alltime at TLU. Lee played at TLU as the Bulldogs transitioned from the American Southwest Conference to the SCAC. She played two seasons in the ASC and two seasons in the SCAC. In her two seasons in the SCAC, Lee registered 666 digs in 2013 and 759 digs in 2014, for a twoyear conference total of 1,425. She averaged 6.3 digs per set in her two years in the SCAC.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference will be announcing 30th Anniversary teams in 21 sports throughout the 2020-21 academic year. The league selected 15th Anniversary teams during the 2005-06 academic year.

The SCAC’s 30th Anniversary teams were selected through balloting by present coaches in each sport as well as administrators.

Athletes who participated in conference competition between the fall of 2005 through the spring of 2020 and had been named to at least two All-SCAC teams and/or were selected as a Player of the Year in their respective sport were eligible for selection.

Menchaca Jessica Marie Menchaca, age 49 of Seguin, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021.

Jessica was born on February 2, 1971 in New Braunfels, Texas to Juan V. and April Marie (Farias) Ortiz. She was a graduate of New Braunfels High school and a former Monocera.

Over her 29 years at Continental Automotive she made countless friends. She never knew a stranger, and her smile would instantly put you at ease. She loved to be out on a dance floor. She gained a second family after joining CrossFit Seguin where she excelled in lifting big and heavy, and most importantly motivating others to reach their best.

During the summer months you could always find her near the water in her free time. Most of all she loved spending her days with her family and grand-puppy Bella.

Daniel “Danny” E. Maples, Sr., age 70 of Seguin, Texas passed away January 17, 2021 peacefully at home surrounded by his family and loved ones.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and friend to many. Danny was born on October 12, 1950 in San Antonio, Texas to Doris May and Hugh Wilson Maples. He graduated from Navarro High School in 1969 and later obtained his Master Electrical license certificate in 1974.

Danny, his brother Steve and father Hugh, worked together to make Maples Electric Company a successful electrical contractor construction company where they did commercial and residential electrical work in San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and the surrounding cities. Undeutsch Virginia Ann Undeutsch, age 78 of Kingsbury, joined our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

Virginia was born on August 21, 1942 in Dalton, Georgia to Ezekiel and Gladys (Smith) Weems.

She will be remembered as a long-time employee of Guadalupe County Tax Office. Virginia loved to quilt and made many beautiful quilts in her lifetime.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, William Weems and Dorothy Huckabee and husband Charles. Survivors include her loving husband of 53 years who was always by her side, Robert “Bob” Undeutsch; sons, Mark Undeutsch and partner Nicole Watts and Marty Undeutsch and partner Heather Cummings; granddaughter who knew and loved her as Mimi, Carter Elizabeth Undeutsch; brother-in-law, Walter Undeutsch and wife Mary; sister-in-law, Linda Thabes and husband John; several nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends. Arlene Joyce Jung Lenz, age 91 of New Braunfels, formerly of Seguin, passed away on January 12, 2021. Arlene was born on November 24, 1929 in Comal County to Bertha (Seay) and William H. Jung.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Valentin Hermann “Val” Lenz, her parents, and her brothers Curtis J. Jung and Merlin Jung. Survivors include son, Randy Lenz (Carolyn) of New Braunfels and daughter, Donna Loflin of North Port, FL; sister, Margaret Schievelbein; grandchildren, Matthew Loflin (Angel), Sarah Sears (Sean), Wesley Hart, and Kevin Lenz (Audrey); great grandchildren; Mylah Loflin, Rylan Sears, Grayson Sears, Nolan Lenz, and Cole Lenz; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Glenn Henry Baker, age 96 of Kingsbury, passed away on January 15, 2021. Glenn was born on December 28, 1924 in Kingsbury, Texas to Lola (Govett) and Patrick Henry Baker. He was a graduate of Dowdy School, Class of 1942. He married Ola Mae Reneau on October 15, 1949.

In his younger years, Glenn and Ola enjoyed taking their four boys fishing at their camphouse in Ottine on the San Marcos River. He also taught the four boys to hunt and up until he passed, he loved hearing the stories of their hunts.

After his retirement in 1979, he enjoyed raising pure bred Charolais Cattle and traveling to the consignment sales, building his herd with top notch cattle. He and Ola enjoyed traveling all over the US and Canada in their motorhome, and once flew to Germany to meet their friends living there who took them to Italy, France and Austria.

Glenn is preceded in death by his son, Dennis Baker and wife Debbie, his parents and his brother, Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law, Billy Perryman.

Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Ola Mae Baker; sons, Barry Baker, Ronnie Baker and wife Becky, and Jay Baker; grandchildren, Randall and wife Tonya Baker, Ryan and wife Mariah Baker, Jayme Baker and Mallory Baker, and Bryan Baker; greatgrandchildren, Cayden and Quinten Baker, Brooke and Lauren Baker (and their mother, Beth Radtke), Bonnye Kane, Hadley, Adelyn and Saylor Weitzman; sister, Patricia Perryman; brother-in-law Butch and wife Susie Reneau, and sister-in-law, Bettie and husband Charles Snyder; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Rangel Alfredo Salas Rangel went to be with the Lord January 14, 2021. Born in Seguin, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Maxine Rangel, brothers Rodolpho Rangel and Richard Rangel.

He leaves behind his sister, Josefina (Rangel) Lehmann his niece Elizabeth Escareno and great niece Madison Westenbarger, nephew Rodolpho (Rudy)-Shelly Rangel his great nephew Nicholas Rangel and great niece Mckenna , niece Dominga and James Arevalo and his great nephews, Jeremiah Arevalo, Azariah Arevalo, and his great nieces, Crystal Avila, Jerilyn Tovar-Eddie, Ariel ValadezJesus, Adley Arevalo and fiancĂŠ Kreston Joyner.

He was a United State Marine Veteran, LCpl. His career was welding and the love of fishing.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends; especially his great great nephews and great great nieces who got to spend the last 2 years getting to know him.

Biden To Honor COVID Victims Tuesday

(Washington, DC) -- President-elect Joe Biden honored the victims of the coronavirus on the eve of his inauguration. He and VP-elect Kamala Harris spoke Tuesday evening at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to honor the lives lost to the respiratory illness. Tuesday morning, Biden will attend a send off event as he leaves Wilmington, Delaware for the nation’s capital. Biden will spend the night before Wednesday’s inauguration at the Blair House across the street from the White House. Biden Admin Won’t Lift COVID Travel Restrictions

(Washington, DC) -- The incoming Biden administration is not going to lift coronavirus travel restrictions on travelers from Europe, the United Kingdom and Brazil. President Trump announced plans to end those restrictions on the 26th, days after he leaves office. Incoming press secretary Jen Psaki says it’s not the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel. She added they plan to strengthen measures around international travel to slow the spread of the

(Baltimore, MD) -- There are now more than 24-million cases of the coronavirus in the United States. According to Johns Hopkins University, the death toll is above 398-thousand. The nation has averaged more than 230-thousand new COVID-19 infections and three-thousand deaths every day this month. The first COVID-19 deaths in this country were confirmed less than a year ago. Globally, there are more than 95-million confirmed cases and more than two-million deaths.

L.A. County Lifts Cremation Limits Amid COVID Death Surge

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Los Angeles County is lifting restrictions on cremations because of the record-high coronavirus death rate. An air quality restriction that limited the number of cremations facilities could perform in a month has been suspended. The death rate in L.A. County is now double what it was before the pandemic began. This has led to a backlog at hospital morgues, funeral homes and crematoriums. The exemption will last for at least ten days.
