Seguin ISD purchases future middle school, ag facility site

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD has officially locked down land for a future middle school and new ag facility center.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the closing documents were signed on Wednesday for the

81.24 acre property east of Seguin.

The property, located at 1329 Ilka Rd., was purchased from a private seller in the amount of $1.9 million.

(Seguin) -- GVEC employees apparently love going to work.

GVEC, a cooperative that provides electricity, internet, HVAC, solar and battery storage plus electrician services is proud to announce that it has been named a winner of the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award for Best Places to Work 2024.

The co-op ranked #10 out of 50 chosen for this award in the Small to Medium U.S. Business category.

Glassdoor is one of the largest job recruiting sites with thousands of small- to medium-sized companies utilizing their site.

GVEC officials say being honored as one of the Best Places to Work 2024 organizations reflects the employees of GVEC’s strong dedication to serving the members, communities and the cooperative.

Ashley Coburn, the chief people officer for GVEC, says what makes this award even more incredible is that the results are based on the employees themselves.

“The award is based on all employee ratings at GVEC. So, it’s our employees talking about us and there have even been some employees that have left the company and at times, we will get retirees or just people who have interviewed at the company. So, an award like this coming from such a range and a diverse group of people is absolutely such an honor that they are all getting on there and talking about GVEC as being ‘the’ place to work and the ‘best’ place to work and giving us such high reviews -- that’s everything to us because that is our work. Our work is to promote our employees, to increasing engagement, to bring them to a kind of environment at work -- they are at work so many hours of the day -- bringing them a kind of an environment that they want to be at. So, to me, that’s the biggest honor,” said Coburn.

Again, this award is based on the reviews made by GVEC employees about their job, work environment and GVEC over the past year.

When employees submit reviews about their employer on Glassdoor, they are asked to share their opinions on some of the best reasons to work for their employer (pros), any downsides (cons) and are encouraged to provide advice to management. In addition, employees are asked to rate how satisfied they are with their employer overall, rate their CEO and key workplace attributes including career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, diversity and inclusion, senior management and worklife balance.

Employees are also asked whether they would recommend their employer to a friend and whether they believe their employer’s six-month business outlook is positive, negative or if they have no opinion.

Coburn says when employees are happy, there is no better award that they could receive.

“It’s not about the award as it is about the people and who works for us and being the kind of culture where people want to come and continue to give and serve the communities that GVEC serves. So, that’s what it is really all about,” said Coburn.

“The Best Places to Work award is a stark reminder of the power of Glassdoor, from arming professionals with career insights and real-time conversations about all things work and life, to providing employers with feedback to improve. County Treasurer honored for three decades of service to Guadalupe County

It is located on the east side of Ilka Road just south of I-10 and we look forward to moving on that project and identifying how it will be best be used for us in the future,” said Hoffmann.

Due to the property’s size, shape and topography, Hoffmann says the Ilka Road site also lends itself to serve as the ideal location for the district’s proposed agriculture science facility, also approved in the 2022 bond initiative.

“We had earmarked about $9 million to construct the ag facility.

It is something Seguin ISD has never had and the goal being to create a facility in which we can allow more students who want to participate in Ag to be able to do so. Right now as it stands, our students who want to show animals usually have to keep the animals either on their family’s property or a friend’s or neighbor’s property. So, we know that that limits the number of students participating in ag and by having this ag science facility, we are able to increase that opportunity for our students and then there are some standing ag structures currently on the property and we are hoping that

(Seguin) -- A long time elected official was among those literally getting flowers during a recent meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

The court used its first meeting of 2024 to recognize some of its more seasoned employees. That list included the overall tenure of Guadalupe County Treasurer Linda Douglass.

Douglass officially reached the 30 year mark, and she thanked the court for its recognition.

"1981 is when I started my career here. I left a few years and then I came back because I knew where home was. I've been here 30 years now but a little longer than that. I've enjoyed every moment of it. There's good times and bad times but mostly, there's been nothing but good times here and I just want to thank you guys for all you do.

Douglass was the only elected official to receive that recognition, but several other county workers were also recognized by the court during its meeting.

With the purchase of the land also comes the reminder that the district is not expected to begin building a new middle school until maybe five or seven years down the road. That exact cost of the school will also have to come before voters in the years ahead.

The construction of the Ag center, however, is expected to be sooner. That, again, is thanks to voter approved dollars.

Hoffmann says the district is thankful to have secured property that will allow it to put its visions in motion for the two new properties.

He says like in everything else, prices of land continue to soar and says the district just couldn’t risk paying more later.

“All things considered, the price was within our budget. It was within what voters approved for us to spend and again, we are fortunate to not only be able to use that site for a future middle school site but also to house that ag science facility.

So, really, we were able to get two facilities in one location for our future students with a purchase that

met the budget approved by our voters,” said Hoffmann.

Meanwhile, Hoffmann says the Seguin ISD is well equipped to handle its current enrollment at both middle schools. He says the growth anticipated in the very near future is already being addressed.

“The AJB project as we’re adding on to AJB, we are increasing our square footage per classroom so that will enable us to allow more students to attend AJB. With the Barnes renovation coming up here in the future -- again another Bond 2022 project -- we will be able to increase our classroom’s square footage allowing us to take in additional students but we do know there is a cap. There is going to be a sweet spot. Once those two schools reach that sweet spot, it becomes crowded again. So, again we are envisioning that in the future and again we may be talking five, seven years down the road in which a new middle school is going to have to be built to meet the needs of the community,” said Hoffmann.

District officials say the next step will to begin drafting plans for the construction of the new ag science center. The hope is to have the center up and running as soon as possible.

(Seguin) -- A couple of Seguin High School basketball players are making headlines.

On Tuesday, Matador senior basketball player John Jackson moved past 2000 points in his career. Back on January 9th, Jackson was named a McDonald’s All-American nominee.

And this coming Monday, Jackson will be presented with an official All American nominee letter.

Jackson is averaging 27.9 points per game, which is second in the state in scoring in Class 5A and fourth in the state in all classifications.

The All-American nominee presentation for Jackson will take place at the McDonald’s on Court Street in Seguin. The Matador basketball team and coaches will be at the presentation which is scheduled to take place at 5:15 p.m. this coming Monday afternoon.

And while Jackson was achieving a milestone on the boys’ court on Tuesday, Lady

Matador senior Desiree Zuniga achieved one of her own. Zuniga established a new school record for most three-pointers in a regular season.

Zuniga drained four three-pointers against Pieper giving her 89 three-point shots made on the season, more than any other Lady Matador in school history.

Zuniga is averaging a Steph Curry like three-plus three pointers per game in 29 games.

She leads Seguin in scoring this season at 10.8 points per contest.

Both Zuniga and Jackson return to the court tomorrow to add to their scoring records.

He was born to Bennie Gay Miller and the late Garlon (Jitter) Miller in Seguin, Texas. He is survived by his mother, Bennie Miller,brother,Aaron (Mike) Wright,sisters,Helen Miller,Barbara Miller,and Yvette Miller.He also had a sister that preceded him in death,Sandra Burleson. Sidney Lawrence Jeffreys, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at home in Seguin, Texas.

He was born on November 16, 1932, in Brady, Texas.

Sidney was a kind-hearted man who touched the lives of everyone he met. He had a contagious smile that could brighten up any room and a warm personality that made people feel instantly at ease in his presence. Sidney was known for his unwavering love and dedication to his family and friends.

He is survived by his adoring wife, Karin Jeffreys; their children, Sherry Mizumoto and Mark Jeffreys; and his cherished granddaughter, Angela Matthews. Sidney’s love for his family was boundless, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He leaves behind

a beautiful legacy of love and strong family values.

In addition to being a devoted family man, Sidney had a successful career as Arts Instructor for the United States Airforce. He approached his work with passion and integrity, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Sidney’s hard work and dedication were truly inspirational.

Friends and loved ones are invited to attend the memorial gathering in honor of Sidney on January 22, 2024. Philip Marcus Streety, 70, of Smiley, Texas, gained his eternal wings and found eternal peace on January 10, 2024. Philip was born July 7, 1953 to Joe Edward Streety and Julia Anglin Streety in Nixon, Texas.

Philip grew up with his siblings, cousins and friends in Smiley, Texas. He graduated from Smiley High School in 1971 and attended Wharton Junior College. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Houston in Houston, TX. He then owned a maintenance business in Friendswood, Texas for 10 years.

In 1978, Philip met the love of his life, Jackolyn Block, while visiting his mother at Cuero Hospital. They started their wonderful life together in 1979 and returned to Smiley, Texas, in 1982. He worked for Baker Oil Tool in Yorktown, Texas, and Webber Motor Company in Cuero, Texas, before Bubba Caraway whisked him away to work for him at Caraway Ford as a service manager in Nixon, Texas. In 1993, Philip and Jackie received the greatest gift from God and adopted a beautiful baby girl named Karly, who he was very proud of, and with her adoption, they completed their wonderful little family.

He retired from Caraway Ford in 2018 after 33 years of service. Philip enjoyed farming, ranching and traveling with his family and friends. He spent a lot of time helping the Nixon-Smiley Livestock Board and supported the funding and construction of the new show barn building. He spent many years as a member and volunteer for the Smiley Fire Department.

Philip is preceded in death by his parents Joe and Julia Streety, his sister Linda Carol Bishop, in-laws Frankie and Wilfred Block and brother-in-law Marty Block. He is survived by his loving wife Jackolyn Streety; his daughter Karly Streety; his brother and sister-in-law James and Janie Streety; brother-in-law Earl Bishop; numerous nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Visitation was held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Smiley. The funeral, for Philip Marcus Streety, was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at First Baptist Churc of Smiley, officiated by Pastor Marvin Miles and his nephew, Ethan Pierce.

Interment followed at the Bundick Cemetery in Smiley officiated by Pastor Marvin Miles and nephew, Ethan Pierce. A reception immediately followed in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church Smiley.

Defense Secretary Austin Released From Hospital (Washington, DC) -- Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is out of the hospital. The Pentagon said he was released from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Monday and will work remotely “for a period of time” while having “full access” to secure communications capabilities. Austin was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago due to complications from prostate cancer surgery. The Pentagon did not disclose Austin had been hospitalized until days after he had been admitted. Lawmakers have demanded answers about why the White House and Congress were not notified about Austin’s hospitalization.

North Carolina To Blame For Nationwide Delay Of Death Data (Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina is responsible for a nationwide delay of federal health data. The National Center for Health Statistics is supposed to release information on the country’s mortality rate every December. The report details how Americans died through the previous year. The CDC postponed its latest release after North Carolina’s vital records office alerted the agency that its report was incomplete.

Frozen Pipes Stop Autopsies In Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office (Dallas, TX) -- The cold spell is keeping the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office from conducting autopsies. The water pipes are frozen at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, and at the Health and Human Services building next door. No running water means no autopsies, and the work is reportedly starting to pile up.

Mother Suing Pine-Richland School District Over Student Gender Identity Policy (Pine Township, PA) -- The mother of a Pennsylvania student in Pine-Richland Schools is suing the district over its reported gender identity policy.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe, is looking to require school leaders to inform her of details from any conversations between her child and school employees related to gender identity or gender dysphoria. Her lawsuit claims the district’s current policy allows that kind of information to be kept from parents if a student does not want the details shared. The mom says her child has some social and emotional challenges that could be complicated further if the right approach to mental health and medical care is not taken.
