Commissioners want roads in subdivisions to meet county standards

(Seguin) -- The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court is taking action to make sure that future roads in subdivisions are up to the county’s standards. The court recently approved an upgrade to the county’s subdivision rule book.

County Engineer Clay Forister explained the change.

“This is a minor addition to clarify our road frontage requirements. Under local government code, we can only regulate lot frontage along existing county roads. That current standard is 200 feet. What this addition seeks to do is add the authority to regulate lot frontage along new subdivision roads, rural developments, whatever they are -- those interior streets that are not intended for through traffic to knock that down to 80 feet,” said Forister.

(Seguin) -- Today is the last day to provide input into next year's school calendar for the Seguin ISD. The district is asking parents and the Seguin ISD community to select from one of two school calendars being proposed.

"We've got Option 1, Option 2 and they are very similar. Option 1 does have a school start date of Aug. 15 which is a Thursday Calendar, pg. 3

Men face drug, firearm charges (Seguin) -- A traffic stop on New Braunfels Street recently led to the arrest of a pair of Seguin men who now face charges for drugs and firearms.

James Wright, 43 and David Gomez, 51 were arrested just before midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 10 by members of the Guadalupe County Narcotics Taskforce and Seguin Police Department C.A.S.E. Unit.

Officials say the narcotics operation, which also included a search warrant in the 3400 block of Lindsey Lane, led them to the seizure of several drugs.

During this operation, investigators seized 344.8 grams of methamphetamine, 82 grams cocaine, 5 grams psilocybin, 5 grams of THC, and eight firearms.

Both Gomez and Wright were arrested and booked into the Guadalupe County Jail.

Gomez faces charges that include the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance plus six counts of unlawful possession of firearm by a felon.

Wright was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

“If a development wanted to come in with smaller lots, we would just not accept those streets for maintenance but it would not preclude plat approval on that basis,” said Forister.

County Judge Kyle Kutscher says the change makes the county’s expectations clear for these roads that are being built in the growing number of subdivisions across the county.

“Again, this is very important to look at and say and realize and understand, this does not, as Clay said, ‘have an impact on whether a

plat gets approved or not.’ We do not have the ability to do that but it is definitely tied to 100 percent on whether we are going to consider accepting that as a county road or not. So, if a developer comes in and they say, ‘I don’t want to do that,’ well,

we can’t technically stop you but we also don’t have to use taxpayer money to fix roads that you aren’t willing to build to the standard that we think is in the best interest of the citizens of the county. So, that’s really what it boils down to. That’s our message. We are not trying to stop anything other than protect what is going to be built and what is going to be here down the road,” said Kutscher.

Calendar, continued. and it has a last day of school of May 23rd which is a Friday before Memorial Day and then calendar Option 2 has a little bit later starting date proposed. It's Monday, Aug. 19 with a last day of school on Wednesday, May. 28.

So, that is after Memorial Day," said Hoffmann.

Aside from those two start and end times, Hoffmann says the calendars remain very similar.

"We have traditional holidays built in such as Labor Day, Fair Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. Day as well as Spring Break, Easter and Memorial Day," said Hoffmann.

Now although most holidays will continue to be observed, Hoffmann adds that there will be a couple of different things that folks will notice this time around.

"We do not have intersession in these calendar options. There were funds earmarked for intercession and to help post Covid and those funds are no longer available so we aren't able to provide any funding towards intersession so we went ahead and pulled intersession out of the calendar. Another little interesting nuisance is our teachers provided feedback suggesting that they get an inservice day and a student holiday on Friday, Nov. 1 which is the day after Halloween so our students will get to trickor-treat Halloween night and not worry about having to come to school the next day," said Hoffmann.

Hoffmann points out that the Seguin ISD takes the development of the school calendar very seriously as the

district is required by state law to have a minimum of 75,600 instructional minutes in a school year and a total of 187 teacher contract days. More importantly, he says the calendar options are the result of months of hard work by the Seguin ISD's Education Improvement Council (DEIC) which is composed of teacher representatives from each campus.

"We're just hoping our parents, students, grandparents, community members take the time to look at these two options -- tell us which option they like best and we also have a comment section so that they can provide additional feedback and let us know how they feel about the calendars," said Hoffmann.

Other noted highlights on each proposed calendar is a student holiday on the day after Easter which is Monday, April 21. This year's instructional calendar only includes Good Friday but not the Monday after Easter.

The proposed calendars will also not have half days embedded during the week such as the Wednesdays that were included for the current school year. Instead, half days have been proposed for the day before winter break begins and on the last day of school.

Last year, Hoffmann says 1,000 people responded to the survey. This year, he hopes even more responses will be reported.

Again, 5 p.m. today ( Jan, 17) is the deadline to select from one of two calendar options being proposed for the 2024-2025 school year.

Buffalo will host the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers crushed the Philadelphia Eagles 32-9 in Tampa. The Bucs battle the Lions in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

Falcons Interview Bill Belichick (Flowery Branch, GA) -- The Falcons have completed an interview with arguably the greatest head coach of all time. The team announced on Monday that they’ve met with Bill Belichick about their open head coaching position. The six-time Super Bowl champion was let go by the New England Patriots last week after spending 24 seasons in Foxboro. The Pats went 4-and-13 this year and have missed the playoffs in three out of the last four seasons.

Atlanta is looking for a new head coach after firing Arthur Smith.

Chargers Complete Interview With Jim Harbaugh (Costa Mesa, CA) -- Jim Harbaugh could be returning to the NFL sideline. The Los Angeles Chargers announced they completed an interview with the current Michigan head coach on Monday. Harbaugh and the Wolverines defeated Washington 34-13 in the College Football Playoff National Championship game last week. The 60-year-old was hired by Michigan after serving as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014.

Harbaugh led the Niners to a 44-19-and-1 record over his four seasons with the team.

USC QB Caleb Williams Declares For NFL Draft (Los Angles, CA) -- One of college football’s top stars is declaring for the NFL draft. USC quarterback Caleb Williams announced Monday he will not return for his senior season. He is widely considered the possible top overall pick available in the draft. Williams won the Heisman Trophy in his first season with USC in 2022 and most recently threw for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2023. He also rushed for 136 yards and 11 scores. The NFL Draft will be held April 25th through the 27th in Detroit.

UConn Rises To First In College Basketball Coaches Poll (Undated) -- There is a new number one team in the nation according to the latest college basketball coaches poll. UConn sits atop the rankings after rising three spots and receiving 20 first place votes. Purdue, North Carolina, Kansas and Houston round out the remainder of the top five. Iowa State is 20th, TCU is 22nd, Dayton is 23rd and Texas Tech is 25th after not being included in last week’s rankings. Colorado State, Gonzaga, Clemson and Florida Atlantic were the four schools that dropped out of the top 25.

Australian Open Day One Recap (Melbourne) -- The opening day of the Australian Open is in the books. Hubert Hurkacz, Casper Ruud and Alexde Minaur all collected wins to advance to the second round. American Alex Michelsen stayed alive with a four-set victory over James Mccabe. On the women’s side, top-seeded Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur each rolled to a straight set wins. Naomi Osaka fell in straight sets to Caroline Garcia. Danielle Collins and Sloane Stephens both moved on, while fellow Americans Sofia Kenin, Peyton Stearns and Taylor Townsend were ousted from the tournament.

CVS Closing Some Pharmacies Inside Target Stores (Undated) -- CVS is closing dozens of pharmacies inside Target stores. A spokesperson with the company says the closings are part of CVS’ plan to “reduce store and pharmacy density.” This comes as the drugstore industry has been hit by challenges like worker shortages and competition from mail-order pharmacies. The Pharmacy closures will start in February and will be completed by the end of April. Employees impacted by the closures will reportedly be offered similar roles within the company.

OH Woman Will Not Be Charged Following Miscarriage (Trumbull County, OH) -- An Ohio woman will not be charged after she suffered a miscarriage. According to CNN, Brittany Watts was seeking medical treatment for her 22-week-old fetus at a hospital when doctor’s told her that her water had broken and that her fetus would not survive.

After waiting for eight hours at the hospital as doctors and officials considered if inducing her would violate Ohio’s abortion laws, she went home and miscarried the baby in her bathroom. The baby was found in her toilet and prosecutors then charged her with felony abuse of corpse but a a grand jury has declined to return an indictment against Watts.

NJ 9/11 Compensation Fund Advocate Killed In Freak Accident (Galloway Township, NJ) -- New Jersey’s Joseph Zadrogra, a well-known 9/11 Compensation Fund Advocate, has died unexpectedly at the age of 76. He was killed in a freak accident on Saturday, struck in a hospital parking lot in Galloway Township by an elderly driver who accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. Zadroga had been visiting his wife at the hospital. The 2011 law that provides health benefits and compensation to 9/11 first responders is named for James Zadroga, Joseph’s NYPD officer son who died at 34 after developing a lethal respiratory illness at Ground Zero.

NY Blood Center Declares Blood Shortage (New York, NY) -- The New York Blood Center is trying to combat its latest blood shortage. Organizers say they are in a critical emergency and need donors who are O-Negative and O-Positive. A blood drive was held outside the South Country Library in Bellport last week where more than 50 people signed up to donate blood. The Blood Center says one pint of blood can save three lives.
