(Guadalupe County) -- Another chilly day is in store for most of Texas including all of Seguin and Guadalupe County. A winter storm warning and wind chill advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Guadalupe County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Office, teams of law enforcement agencies plus the county’s road and bridge department have all maintained constant eyes on the weather since the arctic blast rolled into the area late Sunday. Unlike Monday which reported just a few icy conditions, today’s forecast calls for more of a cold, frigid day. Most schools,

such as the Seguin ISD, also sent out notices early Monday afternoon reminding parents that school would also be held normal hours.

Patrick Pinder, the county’s emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says while the temperatures are expected to rise above freezing today, caution is still crucial.

The show must go on The Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show is officially underway Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- While most of us were wrapped in blankets and keeping warm inside our homes, hundreds of area youth were reportedly braving the cold temperatures and preparing their projects for this year's Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show.

The annual show which will feature students from all across Guadalupe County gets underway this morning at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Today's show schedule includes rabbits, goats and poultry (turkeys and broilers).

Despite the freezing temperatures, this week's arctic blast is not stopping this year's show from having another successful year. That's according to Megan Reiley, the cosecretary for the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

"We are still starting. The weather is absolutely freezing but we are kind of sifting, kind of making things work. The biggest thing is our first show of the day is the rabbit show and typically that starts at 7:30 a.m. check-in, weigh-in, kind of start the judging. We have pushed that back to 9 a.m. just to account for a little more time for people to get out here and get in here slowly. Things could warm up a little bit and then also the rabbits typically show in the rodeo arena but because there is no sunshine and there's a lot of wind out there, we have shifted and adjusted things so the rabbits are going to be showing in our cattle and goat holding pen barn where those animals

normally hold so a little more wind blockage, cover again just to try to get the kids and spectators as much out of the wind and elements as we possibly can," said Reiley.

Reiley says this week's weather and youth show should serve as reminders of why the world of agriculture is so very important to each of us.

"We started Sunday with our set-up of the facilities which was kind of the first big cold day and whether it was kids, exhibitors, parents, FFA advisors, volunteers, everybody was down there in freezing cold weather and we kind of just started prepping things and it was just really funny to kind of hear the rumblings of while people were working getting things ready to go. They were taking phone calls of 'yeah, I need to get out to this piece of property and get water running and wrap pipes' and getting everything ready for the animals because the livestock industry does not stop. These animals have to be fed. They have to be well taken care of and I think that's kind of the beauty of what we are teaching these kids through this program too is the responsibilities, the hard work and even when it's really really hot outside and you don't want to be working your animals and even when it's freezing cold outside and you are breaking ice troughs and things like that, it's the responsibly and those life lessons that these kids are learning about how to take care of these animals which we are seeing it full force this week which

Weather cancels Monday’s MLK Day celebration Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The cold weather resulted in putting this year’s MLK Day celebration on ice.

Members of the Seguin MLK Day Planning Committee was forced to cancel all remaining events that had been scheduled for Monday’s federal MLK holiday.

The group issued a letter to the community explaining its concerns.

It says that “due to projected weather conditions, the MLK Planning Committee has decided to cancel the program for...Monday, January 15th at TLU Wupperman Little Theatre at 11 AM.” Weather, continued.

He is especially asking that folks “remember our furry friends.” He says “ensure pets are well cared for by bringing them inside, providing extra blankets, and being cautious with heat lamps.

Unfortunately, the fire marshal’s office has already responded to a structure fire caused by a heat lamp this weekend.”

He adds that people should also “allow enough space and plug heaters into the wall outlet to insure safety. Be mindful of proper clearance when using hay lamps and avoid using hay as bedding.”

Today’s forecast reports sunny skies with highs in the mid 30s.

Tonight, however, returns with lows around 14 and wind chill readings as low as zero.

But they also added that they were already looking forward to next year.

“We apologize that we were not able to host this year’s annual march, but we hope that we will be able to continue this next year.

This year’s youth show wraps up at noon Saturday with the annual auction sale at the Seguin Events Center Dance Slab.

(Undated) -- Here is the latest sports news: The Cowboys’ season has come to an end. The Texans are turning their attention to their AFC Divisional Round opponent. The Longhorns are adding a major playmaker through the transfer portal.

Steven Nelson and linebacker Christian Harris returned interceptions on consecutive drives in the second half to seal the win for Houston. The Texans are set to take on either the Baltimore Ravens or Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round on Saturday afternoon.

Jr. totaled 24 points apiece in the losing effort.

Jones and Luka Doncic are doubtful for today’s game, while Dereck Lively the Second is listed as questionable. Dante Exum remains out with a heel injury. The Mavs are seventh in the West at 23-and-17.

Cowboys Lose To Packers In NFC Wild Card Round (Arlington, TX) -- The Cowboys’ season has come to an end. Dallas lost to the Green Bay Packers 48-32 in the NFC Wild Card round at AT&T Stadium. Dak Prescott completed 41-of60 passes for 403 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Jake Ferguson racked up 10 catches for 93 yards and three TD’s, while CeeDee Lamb reeled in nine receptions for 110 yards in the losing effort. The Cowboys still have not made it past the Divisional Round of the playoffs since 1995. They will now turn their focus towards the offseason.

Former Alabama WR Isaiah Bond Transfers To Texas (Austin, TX) -- The Longhorns are adding a major playmaker through the transfer portal.

Former Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Bond has committed to Texas. Bond entered the portal following the retirement of legendary Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban last week. He led Alabama with 48 receptions last season to go along with 668 yards and four touchdowns.

Bond will help fill the void left by the departure of top receiver targets Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell and Jordan Whittington to the NFL. In other news, head coach Steve Sarkisian has agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2030.

Rockets Visit 76ers Today (Philadelphia, PA) -- The Rockets are looking to get back into the win column.

Houston will visit the Philadelphia 76ers this afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center. The Rockets are coming off a 145-113 loss to the Boston Celtics on Saturday. Cam Whitmore came off the bench to lead the team with 22 points. Alperen Sengun recorded a doubledouble with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort. Ohio House Votes To Override DeWine’s Veto Of Juvenile Trans Healthcare, Sports Law (Columbus, OH) -- The Ohio House is moving to override Governor DeWine’s veto of House Bill 68. The measure would ban some gender-affirming healthcare for minors in the state and would bar trans girls from competing in female athletics in schools. Yesterday, members of the House supported a veto override in a 65 to 25 vote. The state Senate will now vote on whether the measure will become law after being rejected by the governor. The next Senate session is scheduled for the 24th.

Jelly Roll Urges Congress To Pass Anti-Fentanyl Lesiglation (Washington, DC) -- A rapper-turned-country star is urging Congress to pass anti-fentanyl legislation. Jelly Roll, also known as Jason DeFord testified last week that he sees the “heartbreaking impact of fentanyl” in his fans who seek comfort in music. The FEND Off Fentanyl Act passed the Senate last summer but still hasn’t made it through the House. DeFord served time in prison for charges that included possession with intent to sell, according to the New York Times. He told the Senate he’s “not here to defend the use of illegal drugs,” and understands the “paradox” of his appearance given his history.

Norovirus Outbreak In San Diego Linked To Oysters From Mexico (San Diego, CA) -- Over 40 people in San Diego have been infected with norovirus after eating oysters from Sonora, Mexico. The County Health Department in San Diego is telling restaurants to not sell Rocky Point Oysters from that specific region of northwest Mexico. The cases have been linked to certain restaurants, including the Fish Shop in Pacific Beach, Point Loma and Encinitas and the Carlsbad Aquafarm.
