Seguin’s MLK Day weekend celebration cancelled Planning committee still encouraging folks to remember

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Seguin’s annual four-day celebration of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. has been cancelled. The event, for years, has been hosted locally by the Seguin MLK Planning Committee. Over those years and throughout those extended holiday weekends, the group has hosted various events in observance of Dr. King– culminating with its annual Freedom March in downtown Seguin on that following Monday, the official federal holiday.

Regina Lee, a member of the planning committee, says COVID-19 obviously halted any and all planning for the annual event.

She says not hosting the event is a break in a very long-standing tradition for the Seguin community.

“We are really, really hoping that 2022 brings about a whole different change and that we are back on track, back on target and this year, we hope we can actually start meeting again and pulling out some ideas. This has put a strain on us because this is a group that meets every month and we haven’t even met,” said Lee. See MLK, Page 3

Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes new leadership

(Seguin) -- The passing of the gavel into the next century was also history in the making for the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Although the chamber membership was limited Tuesday night to a virtual Centennial Celebration, it did get to hear from Outgoing Chairman Doug Parker as well as from new Chairwoman Lea Phelps.

Parker officially handed over the leadership role on the chamber’s 100th anniversary. Parker says it’s been an honor to have served the chamber during this past year.

“What an honor it is to have been the chair of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce 2020. It was extremely exhilarating and challenging at the same time especially with the COVID-19 changes that had to take place.

But we still weathered the storm and I’m very proud of my year as chairman.

Phelps. I know she will do an outstanding job, but I’ll still be on board as the outgoing chair and as the voice for Lea whenever she needs some guidance and assistance, but it’s been a pleasure and an honor for me to serve as the chair,” said Parker.

Parker says although it was a different and difficult year, he believes the chamber recorded plenty of success.

“There were so many things that we’ve had

to cut back on this year such as our luncheons and our mixers. Those were all so much fun and the fellowship. They’ve already been reduced to mostly a Zoom format, so we’ve been curtailed in a lot of ways, but I think we still succeeded in our mission to making Seguin and Guadalupe County a better place to live, work and thrive,” said Parker.

As for Phelps, she says she’s excited and ready to begin the next 100-year chapter for the chamber.

“I’m excited and I’m honored to be a part of this chamber and to see how far we have come in the last 100 years looking back at all of the photographs that have been collected and that came from the library and the museum here in town.

It’s been exciting to see what Seguin used to be and to know that Seguin can once again shine just as bright as it has in the past and I’m excited to be a part of that and I’m looking forward to all of the growth that is coming

into our area and looking forward to growing our chamber of commerce and working with each individual business and the entire board,” said Phelps.

In addition to seeing the gavel change hands, chamber officials also recognized those outgoing and incoming members of its board of directors and to all staff members who work yearround in the promotion of Seguin and its local businesses.

Lee says children should especially be challenged to learn more about Dr. King’s dream and his non-violent approach toward equality. She says simply having them ask their grandparents of what they remember is always a good start.

“These times are turbulent times like the 50s, 60s and 70s. I mean really turbulent times this last year and the message more so that Martin King is preaching of non-violence -- it’s definitely prevalent.

The way that people have acted, have acted against each other, the lack of respect. It really has culminated this year, I think. Regardless of what party you are for your ideas, there is such a lack of respect for each other. We don’t listen to each other. We don’t hear what each other are saying. It’s horrible,” said Lee.

“Start a conversation, do a dialogue with their family. Even if you don’t think it affects you, it does affect you. It affects everybody,” said Lee.

Despite the decision to cancel all four days of its annual MLK Day Celebration, members of the Seguin MLK Planning Committee say Monday will and should still be a day of celebration for local families.

“If we would sit down and Google MLK and if parents can Google a speech other than ‘I have a Dream,’ although that is definitely prevalent but to see that he had so many other speeches that pertain to us here and now and the knowledge of nonviolence,” said Lee.

Lee says while the committee realizes it had to act responsibly, it is still a bit disappointing to not be able to host their series of events.

“I think it’s been heartbreaking for me because at the very end, I was thinking well, we can at least march safely. We’d be out in the elements, even if you have masks, that should be safe but the reality is it wouldn’t be safe and so that is very heartbreaking for me, but God had a better plan than me obviously,” said Lee. Just last year, the annual four-day MLK Day celebration had grown to five days hosting a list of events such as the Baptists Minister’s Union celebration, the Seguin ISD Choir Showcase, a dinner theater, gospel fest, Central Park rally and of course, the annual MLK Day Freedom March to Texas Lutheran University.

Fire claims lives of four area residents

(New Braunfels) -- Investigation continues into a house fire that claimed the lives of four people in northern Guadalupe County.

Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management officer and fire marshal, says the fire reportedly blazed through the mobile home just before 11 p.m. Tuesday night in the 300 block of Leisure Village.

“While en route, fire crews were informed that there were four people trapped inside of the home. Additional resources were requested from surrounding fire departments in an attempt to rescue the trapped individuals.

Upon arrival, fire crews observed a fully engulfed structure. Inside the structure,

we believe were a 44-year-old male, an 18-year-old female, a 16-year-old female and an 8-year-old male,” said Pinder.

The victims’ identities are not being released at this time, pending positive identification through the medical examiner’s office.

Pinder says two other people lived at the residence.

“One was able to escape before the fire engulfing the structure, the other was not home at the time of the fire,” said Pinder.

Pinder says the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, he says it does not appear to be suspicious at this time.

Texas Lutheran picked second in SCAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll

(Seguin) - Four-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Texas Lutheran has been picked to finish second in the race for the 2021 SCAC Men’s Basketball Championship, according to this year’s SCAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

In exclusive voting by the league’s head coaches, the Bulldogs received 58 total points and three first-place votes in the preseason poll.

The Bulldogs trailed preseason favorite St. Thomas (Texas) by just one total point in the poll. St. Thomas also edged out TLU in first-place votes, five to three.

The Bulldogs return 10 lettermen and four of their five starters from last season’s conference runner-up squad.

TLU’s four returning starters are: senior guard Sebastian Andrade, senior forward Caleb Lister, senior guard Jamir Mason, and sophomore guard/forward Trystin Silas.

Andrade and Lister each earned SCAC Second Team All-Conference and SCAC

life, Sherwood “Don” Thompson. They were married in 1965 in Bay City and were devoted to each other for 54 years, until his death June 1, 2020. They have one daughter, Dr. Teresa Lynn Thompson, who was the center of their universe.

Both Grace and Sherwood were active together in The Second Baptist Church and the McQueeney Lion’s Club. In addition, Grace served on the Mental Health Mental Retardation Board, Family Awareness Board and as a committee member for the Coalition for a Drug Free Community.

She was a long time member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Organization, an honorary Grace Esther Smith organization for key women educators.

Patsy worked at Randolph Air Force Base in Civil Service after she married until her retirement. She then spent her time with the grandkids and the things she loved to do. Patsy loved her church, her family, and her friends.

Sandra spent her childhood in Beeville, Texas where she and her sister, Dorothy, have many fond memories and quite a few antics! She moved back to San Antonio and graduated from Providence High School. She married her sweetheart on December 26, 1955 and they raised 3 sons and a daughter. The family was very active at St. Luke’s Catholic Church where they made lifelong friends and memories.

After many great years in San Antonio, they moved to Seguin and continued their adventure.

Sandra was very active in St. James Catholic Church being a member of St. Ann’s Circle and Catholic Daughters. She loved playing bridge and was a member of several clubs in San Antonio and Seguin. Sandra also spent many fun hours with her beloved lunch bunch. Throughout her adult life, Sandra spent countless hours involved in many charitable endeavors.

Mamer or Momo, to her grandchildren, was always up for adventure. Though not a stereotypical grandmother, her fun loving, life Sandra Rehm Barron, age living spirit made for one special “Mamer/ 84, passed away December Momo.” Sandra was full of life, fun and was 30, 2020. Sandra was born incredibly witty!

September 14, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas to Leona Sandra and Carroll loved to travel and were Margarite (Striedel) Rehm and always planning their next trip. Undeutsch Virginia Ann Undeutsch, age 78 of Kingsbury, joined our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

Virginia was born on August 21, 1942 in Dalton, Georgia to Ezekiel and Gladys (Smith) Weems.

She will be remembered as a long-time employee of Guadalupe County Tax Office. Virginia loved to quilt and made many beautiful quilts in her lifetime.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, William Weems and Dorothy Huckabee and husband Charles. Survivors include her loving husband of 53 years who was always by her side, Robert “Bob” Undeutsch; sons, Mark Undeutsch and partner Nicole Watts and Marty Undeutsch and partner Heather Cummings; granddaughter who knew and loved her as Mimi, Carter Elizabeth Undeutsch; brother-in-law, Walter Undeutsch and wife Mary; sister-in-law, Linda Thabes and husband John; several nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends. Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, and Mimi and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Betty L. Kalmus, age 87 of Seguin, Texas, passed away January 8, 2021. Betty on May 6, 1933 in Boyne City, Michigan to Elmer Larson, Sr and Edith Larson (Patton).

Betty worked at Brooks Army Hospital for 2 years as a Burn Unit Nurse. She went on to work for Sears and Roebuck for 28 years. Before retiring Betty worked in the banking industry for 20 years. She was an active member of the American Legion H U Wood Post #245 in Seguin.

Arlene Joyce Jung Lenz, age 91 of New Braunfels, formerly of Seguin, passed away on January 12, 2021. Arlene was born on November 24, 1929 in Comal County to Bertha (Seay) and William H. Jung.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Valentin Hermann “Val” Lenz, her parents, and her brothers Curtis J. Jung and Merlin Jung. Arlene spent her entire life in Seguin and was a lifelong member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church. She will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Memorial contributions in Arlene’s honor can be made to Eden Hill Communities or Hope Hospice, both in New Braunfels, TX; or to Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin. U.S. COVID Cases Top 23 Million

(Baltimore, MD) -- There are now more than 23-million coronavirus cases in the United States. According to Johns Hopkins University, the death toll in the U.S. is above 384-thousand. This comes as there was a record number amount of deaths set in the country on Tuesday at over 42-hundred. Globally, the number of cases is past 92-million and nearing two-million deaths.

About 28 Million COVID Vaccine Doses Given World Wide

(Undated) -- The World Health Organization says health professionals have administered about 28 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine world wide.

Speaking at a virtual event, W-H-O emergencies director Michael Ryan says there have been five different vaccines or platforms used in about 46 countries. He noted most of the vaccinations have happened in the world’s wealthiest countries and called for more equity. Ryan said there are populations who are not going to get vaccinated “unless or until we learn to share better.”

Michigan Ex-Gov Charged For Flint Water Crisis

(Flint, MI) -- Former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is being charged over the tainted water crisis in Flint. He was charged with two misdemeanor counts of willful neglect of duty. Flint’s residents were exposed to high levels of lead after the city switched its water supply in 2014. The change is also suspected to be a possible cause of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that killed a dozen people and sickened over 80 others. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is expected to unveil results of an expansive investigation into the water crisis on Thursday.

Early Data Shows Johnson & Johnson Produced High Immune Response (New Brunswick, NJ) -- Johnson & Johnson is reporting some positive results on their potential coronavirus vaccine. Early data from the company shows their COVID-19 vaccine produced a high rate of immune response in trials and a low rate of negative reactions from the first shot. The healthcare company anticipates they will apply for authorization with the FDA shortly after releasing more research. So far, Moderna and Pfizer are the only approved vaccines.
