Marion, Navarro and Seguin students get HANDS-ON look at their futures Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- Local students are better able to answer the question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”

More than 800 eighth grade students from Marion, Navarro and Seguin schools participated in a special interactive career event held on Wednesday in the Seguin Coliseum.

The annual Seguin Youth Career Expo allowed local employers to show off some of the jobs and equipment that they use for their operations in the Seguin area. There were dozens of employers represented at the eventt, each of them gave the students a personalized look at how they do business. Several companies brought robotics equipment or other specialized tools of their trade.

Emerson Sawyer, a student at Seguin ISD’s AJ Briesemeister Middle School, watched as another student controlled a robot that was able to carefully and delicately take a flower from her hand. Sawyer says that she enjoyed seeing all of the technical equipment that was on display.

“We mostly went to the manufacturing, like robotics stuff. We played with these little coding things. You put some code blocks into an iPad and the ball moves around. We went to the Texas A&M Engineering (STEM booth) over there, and they have a robotic ‘re robotic dog and it’s really cute,” said Sawyer.

Hailey Benavides also attends AJB. She says the expo offered her a chance to see some of the future career opportunities that exist in this community.

“We found the robotics and engineering stuff really interesting. I really love robotics. It was so cool to see it all here, and seeing maybe my future job,” Benavides.

The more interactive the booth, the more kids wanted to gather around and see what each company had to offer.

The hands-on approach helped to make the expo fun and interesting. But Seguin ISD CTE Director Rick Bough (boo) says it was more than just a fun day away from school.

Bough says these kids will be heading to Seguin, Navarro and Marion high schools next year. He says they will have some important decisions to make before they get there, and the expo was designed to help them make a more informed decision about their academic futures.

“This is necessary really for our students because things have changed since you and I were in school. There are 16 different programs where kids get to choose from, and they have to choose going into high school, because these are fouryear programs of study. That’s the downside, but the upside is our students get four years of training towards a career or towards that college area that they want to go into,” said Bough.

The local school districts invest heavily in the classes and pathways that must be chosen by each student. Bough says they want the students to see the possibilities that actually exist in this world. These pathways can lead a student to college or to the military, or they could lead them directly into a career right out of high school.

“For example, our welding students get four years of training. Their senior year, they have an opportunity to do an internship. It was just a story (about it) last week. We have four students who did internships last year, that led directly into jobs earning in excess of $60,000 a year, right out of high school. We have students, who are here with our cosmetology program. They can earn a cosmetology license while they are in high school. The cost of cosmetology school is somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000. The only cost to our students, in doing it (in high school), is the cost of their kits -- and everything else is covered through the school,” said Bough.

The kids don’t have to know exactly what they want to do when they grow up, but they do need to become better acquainted with the possibilities out there today.

Bough says there are lots of things for these students to consider as they move into the high school, and the expo

helps them to be better prepared for that next step.

“There’s so many that they get to choose from. They get to see what those are and see the career that lines up with those programs of study. So, when you go through (the expo), you’ll see that you have the Guadalupe County Jail next to our law enforcement program.

Lone Star Home Solutions is next to our construction program. So, we want students to not only see this is what I get in high school, but this is what it can lead to,” said Bough.

The Seguin Youth Career Expo was sponsored by the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, Workforce Solutions Alamo, local schools and business partners who stepped up to help with the event. The students visited the expo on a staggered schedule with each school getting its own designated time. The participating schools included AJB Middle School, Jim Barnes Middle School, Marion Middle School, and Navarro Junior High School.

Area high school basketball roundup (Seguin) -- The Canyon Cougars stormed back from down double digits in the first half to overtake the Seguin Matadors and win a big District 26-5A match-up, 71-63 on Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym. Down 16 near the half-way point in the second quarter, Canyon whittled the Seguin lead down to six by halftime and then scored the first seven points of the third quarter to move in front. After exchanging leads, the Cougars would finish the quarter up by five and keep the Matadors at bay in the fourth to even their district record at 2-2.

Guard Chris Hernandez and forward Roman McFall lead the Cougar comeback. Both juniors had 20 points on the night. Matador senior John Jackson, who was named a McDonald’s All-American nominee earlier in the day, dropped in 28 to lead all scorers. Seguin sophomore Corey Dailey had 15. And senior Chase Zuniga had nine points, all on three-point baskets. Senior Gabe Hernandez had a pair of three-point buckets to finish with six points.

Seguin falls to 1-3 in district. The Mats will next travel to Boerne on Friday to take on the Champion Chargers, who are 4-0 in district after knocking off Smithson Valley Tuesday night.

(New Braunfels) -- Over in New Braunfels, the Lady Mats fell to the Cougarettes 53-31 on Tuesday night. Chase Zuniga’s twin sister, Desiree paced Seguin with 17 points. The Lady Matadors will host Boerne Champion on Friday night. We’ll have that game here on KWED.

(Geronimo) -- Over in Geronimo, the Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers went to overtime with Wimberley in taking down the Lady Texans, 64-58.

Tegan Harborth had 21 points to lead Navarro while Cam Shields poured in 19 and Sienna Kramer added 17. The victory was the 20th of the season for the Lady Panthers, who improved to 4-2 in District 27-4A moving two games ahead of the Lady Texans for third place in the district. Navarro is off the rest of this week. The Lady Panthers will return to district play next Tuesday when they host Canyon Lake.

(Wimberley) -- The Navarro boys fell in Wimberley as the Texans dropped the Panthers, 63-52. Wimberley outscored Navarro 18-9 in the third quarter after the teams went into the locker room at the half tied at 27. Like the Lady Panthers, the Navarro boys are off for the rest of the week. The Panthers will play at Canyon Lake next Tuesday.

(Marion) -- In Marion, the Bulldog basketball teams split a double header on Tuesday. The girls fell in the first game to District 26-3A foe San Antonio Cole, 54-29. Breelon Allen and Brianna Hunter each had 11 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

In the night cap, the Bulldog boys topped Ingram Moore in nondistrict play, 58-45. Marion’s Richie Rayos led all scorers with 25 points. Braeden Fleming and Davian Lagunas had 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

Both Marion teams will be in Nixon on Friday for a district girls/ boys double header against the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs.

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith.

Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football.

Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile.

Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends.

Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love.

A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Verna Mae Wahl Bierstedt, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on January 7, 2024. Verna Mae was born in New Braunfels, Texas to Edna (Reiley) Wahl Bruemmer and George Wahl.

Verna Mae was a 1956 graduate of Seguin High School. She is a retired Special Ed Teacher.

Verna Mae was happily married to the love of her life for 67 ½ years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her most treasured times were spent with family, especially at the holidays where she looked forward to playing

Study Suggests Vegans Less Likely To Get COVID-19 (Undated) -- Vegans are less likely to get COVID-19, according to new research. A study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health found that a diet low in meat and dairy while rich in veggies, legumes and nuts could lower the risk by nearly 40 percent. Researchers speculate that plant-based diets may offer more nutrients that strengthen the immune system.

Measles Outbreak Reported In Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA) -- A Pennsylvania day care center is experiencing an outbreak of measles. Health officials say cases first started being reported last month at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and they were notified days later of more cases at a nearby day care center. So far, eight cases have been reported, five of which have required hospitalization. As local officials try to isolate the outbreak, Philadelphia’s health commissioner says, “we’re holding our breath.” Measles can be deadly, but is preventable through vaccination. It’s usually spread through coughing and sneezing, Four More Women Join Abortion Lawsuit Against Tennessee (Nashville, TN) -- Several more women are joining an abortion lawsuit against the State of Tennessee. Four women have been added to the suit, which was originally filed last September by the Center of Reproductive Rights on behalf of three patients and two physicians. The center says the four women were denied medically necessary abortion care. It also asked the court for a temporary injunction to immediately block Tennessee’s abortion ban as it applies to dangerous pregnancy complications while the case proceeds.

American Red Cross Faces Severe Blood Shortage (Washington, DC) -- The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage. It’s urging people to sign up to donate by offering the change to win a trip to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The organization said in an announcement that the number of blood donors in the US dropped 40-percent over the last two decades. It was down seven-thousand units alone between Christmas and New Year’s Day, calling it a “life and death” issue. The organization is working with the NFL to offer the trip, and said anyone who signs up to donate blood in January will be automatically entered.
