Seguin Youth Career Expo brings hundreds of area students together with local companies Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- Hundreds of area youth this week will get a chance to catch a glimpse of what could be their future careers. More than 800 students from middle schools in the Seguin, Navarro and Marion school districts will be visting the Seguin Colisuem on Wednesday for the annual Seguin Youth Career Expo. The students, along with dozens of local employers, will come together with one goal in mind -- and that’s to explore a world of opportunities and to begin shaping their future career pathways.

Ashlyn Tovar, the city’s industry and workforce development manager, says the event is a collaboration between the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, local schools, and Workforce Solution Alamo’s Youth Empowerment Services program.

“The Seguin Youth Career Expo is a large event. It connects our eighth graders with diverse career opportunities, while also cross referencing the career and technical education pathways offered at Navarro High School, Seguin High School, and the Marion ISD. Expo, pg. 3

A time to sing: Bob Chilcott returns to TLU

(Seguin) -- What could possibly bring a world-renowned composer, conductor, and singer all the way from Oxfordshire, England to Seguin, Texas? The answer is Texas Lutheran University, and the 2024 Youth Choir Festival.

During the day-long festival, Bob Chilcott -- who has conducted choirs all over the world and been deemed one of the world’s most widely performed composers of choral music-- will work with youth treble choirs from across the area in a clinic culminating in a public performance.

This year’s visit will mark Chilcott’s third residency with TLU’s School of Music. His previous residency was highlighted by the premier of a piece he’d composed

for the TLU Treble Choir and the Community Music Academy.

According to Dr. Douglas Boyer, Director of the University’s School of Music, Chilcott’s “kindness, talent, and musical training and experience

make him an amazing clinician-he connects with students of all ages.”

Each time he visits, he works with the TLU and CMA Choirs.

But Dr. Boyer says it doesn’t there.

In keeping with the TLU School of Music tradition of reaching out to the youth of the surrounding area, the University Choir will visit Canyon High School in New Braunfels during Mr. Chilcott’s residency, so that he can work with their choirs as well.

There public will have a chance to hear young voices join together under Chilcott’s direction. The Youth Choir Festival’s concert will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, January 20 in TLU’s Jackson Auditorium.

The peformance is free and open to the public.

It’s an Expo that will showcase both of those things via local companies, and then also the high school career pathways being showcased as well, at the same time,” said Tovar.

These eighth graders will soon be selecting their courses and pathways as they prepare for the start of their high school careers. Tovar says this expo will give them an up close and personal look at a variety of jobs and opportunities that exist in this community and beyond.

“The goal really is to provide valuable insights into those industries and provide a space for these eighth graders to network, but also get hands on to really understand the industry. So, it’s not just your typical ‘here’s some information’ type of expo. It’s allowing these students to come in and really get hands on within that specific industry. So, each company is going to have an interactive piece within their booths. We’re really trying to inspire these eighth graders before they choose their career pathways in high school (and help them) to really get a feel for what they might want to do as they start to transition in as a freshman,” said Tovar.

Tovar says this event has been well received by both the students and the companies. She says the students will be allowed to make their way around the Coliseum and meet with a number of the businesses. The companies will give the students plenty of opportunities to gain some first-hand knowledge about how they operate, and the skills that are required for each job.

“As the students walk in, they’re going to be provided a bag, that actually was provided by us – the Seguin EDC and in conjunction with Workforce Solutions Alamo. They’ll walk into the expo. They will receive a little stamp card, that will have eight companies listed on them at random. They will be able to walk around the showcase. For instance, if there’s a construction booth -- Lone Star Home Solutions is going to be there, they’re going to have equipment set up at their table where students can come in really get hands-on and get a wrench and start to mess with that equipment.

In the fire department’s booth, they could put on the

fire department equipment. So, they’re going to be allowed to do that. We’ll have our city of Seguin Electric Department doing a demo at their specific booth. We’ll have some 3-D printers on site. And we will have the welding of simulator on site,” said Tovar.

The students will stop by their selected booths. Each stop will give them a chance to get closer to winning a prize that will be given away at the end of the event.

Tovar says it will be a fun, interactive and educational experience for each student that attends the expo.

“Every single booth is going to have an interactive piece where a student can actually get hands-on in that industry -- whether that be put something on as far as clothing is concerned or get involved in a demonstration or activity. So, as they walk around, they’ll be able to get those stamp cards filled out, interact with the company, and then turn in that stamp card for a prize at the very end,” said Tovar.

The Seguin Youth Career Expo is really a win-win situation for the students and the employers. Tovar says these kids will eventually makeup the workforce in this area. So, it’s important for these companies to introduce themselves. She says it’s also important for the students to see all the options that they have available to them in the future.

“It’s all about really building that talent pipeline.

Not only from a high school perspective, but really trying to target those younger individuals, because it starts in that age gap when they’re really starting to think about what their future looks like,” said Tovar.

Seguin’s Medrano and Soliz place first at Lehman powerlifting meet Chris Austin

(Kyle) -- The Seguin Matador powerlifting team had a strong showing at the Lehman Lobo Kickoff Meet in Kyle on Saturday.

James Medrano and Gabe Soliz both won their weight classes at the meet.

Medrano took first in the 114-pound weight class. Medrano lifted 415 pounds in the squat, 225 pounds in the bench press and 425 pounds in the dead lift for a total of 1065 pounds.

Soliz finished first in the 123-pound weight class. Soliz lifted 335 pounds in the squat, 195 pounds in the bench and 330 pounds in the dead lift for a combined 860 pounds.

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith.

Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football.

Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile.

Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends.

Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love.

A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte, Seguin, Texas, 78155.

U.S. Hospitals Requiring Masks (Undated) -- As flu and COVID-19 cases are on the rise, hospitals across the country are telling people to mask-up. Covid-19 and the flu have been on the rise for weeks, and health officials are predicting infections will increase this January. Cases have been spiking in 31 states in the weeks leading up to the Holidays, with more and more hospitals across the U.S. requiring masks as a result. Just last week, New York City initiated a mask mandate for public hospitals along with some hospitals in L.A. and Massachusetts. Officials say vaccinations are down this year, and that the JN.1 variant spreads more easily, but there is no evidence it’s more severe than past variants.

Links Between Weight Loss And Work Success (New York, NY) -- Weight bias in the workplace is well documented, with studies showing that people with obesity are paid and promoted less on average than trimmer colleagues. According to a study by Bloomberg, overweight people are hired less, promoted less, and paid less. One study suggests that for every six pounds an average American woman gains, her hourly pay drops two percent. They call it the “health halo,” where we assume people who appear physically fit are hardworking, and goal-oriented types; and that these time-management skills can translate to business. And turns out, discrimination based on weight is totally legal. The Americans With Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination based on physical impairments, but judges have been hesitant to rule that weight should be considered one of them.

Experts Suggest Moderation Instead Of Abstinence (San Antonio, TX) -- Quitting alcohol is a popular New Year’s Resolution. It’s called Dry January, but experts say there is a dark side. There’s a phenomenon know as “abstinence violation effect”, which is if you have one slip, you give up completely. Dr. Kim Fromme [[ Frommy ]] at the University of Texas says that often leads back to a heavy drinking pattern. It’s the reason she recommends moderation as a goal. Instead of a “Dry January,” drinkers should shoot for a “Drier January.” That, she says, leads to longer term health benefits.

New Look At Lingering Effects Of Virus The vast majority of those who catch the Coronavirus recover, but new CDC numbers show that deaths from Long COVID have now topped fivethousand. But Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says most Long COVID comes from severe cases. That’s why he wants people to get vaccinated. There are still no formal tests or standard treatments, meaning deaths are likely under-counted. As of the end of last year, about seven-percent of American adults had experienced long COVID at some point.
