GRMC named one of “America’s Best Hospitals” Hospital receives top honors for patient safety, obstetrics In being named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics, GRMC was once again rated in the top five percent of the 4,500 plus hospitals ranked nationwide.

Unruh says they focus on a number of areas when it comes to providing quality care in the OB department. This latest award again shows them that they are hitting the mark when it comes to providing the best overall care to patients at GRMC.

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- Gudalupe Regional Medical Center is once again being recognized as one of the best hospitals in the nation.

GRMC was recently named one the nation’s top hospitals when it comes to patient safety, and it also received top honors for its work in obstetrics. The recogintion comes from Women’s Choice Award, known as America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare.

Rhonda Unruh, vice-president of quality for GRMC, says they are again thrilled to be recignized by Women’s Choice Award.

“This is an organization that takes publicly reported data and uses their methodology to determine which hospitals provide the best care and they have all of this broken out into different specialties or special categories like patient safety. So with the most recent data, we were chosen as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety and one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics,” said Unruh Patient safety is a critical part of the quality of care provided at GRMC. Unruh says

both awards demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to providing the best possible outcomes for all patients.

“Both of those awards look at safety information from our facility -- so hospital acquired conditions, complications, performance on things like hospital guard infections or surgical complications so they look at that data in our performance there, and they also look at patient satisfaction or patient experience data that is publicly published to award hospitals for outstanding performance,” said Unruh.

The patient safety award signifies that GRMC is in the top tier of the nation’s hospitals when it comes to patient safety in safe surgery practices and lower rates for complications and infections.

“Only the top eight percent of hospitals are actually recognized for that. So very exciting that we got that award. We really do a lot of work in the background with our clinicians and our providers to improve care and to make it as safe as possible for our patients so it’s really nice to see that recognized,” said Unruh.

“We have other measures that we use with our obstetrics department to indicate safety so low elective delivery rates so making sure that if we have early deliveries, it’s for a medical reason and that it is justified because studies show that that improves outcomes for both mom and baby and then also for obstetrics in making sure that we are as safe as possible related to hospital acquired infections, surgical side infections and of course, any type of complications that could develop while our patients are here,” said Unruh.

The awards are important, but Unruh says the best part of this recognition is that it helps patients and their families better understand GRMC’s committment to quality care for all of its patients.

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Seguin Public Library is recognizing the winners of its Seguin Talks About Race Teen Writing Contest. The contest was held in the fall, and done in conjunction with the library’s Seguin Talks About Race Initiative.

Youth Services Librarian Hannah Farmer Says they selected two winners from the contest. The winners are Ximena Izaguirre and Samuel Kuempel.

“We were very impressed by the deep thought that participants put into their writing. Both students are at Seguin High School,” said Farmer.

The students were encouraged to write 250 to 500 words about a book, comic, movie or show that has been a window into another culture or group, and then compare how that book mirrors their own life. You can read both essays on pages two and three in today’s Seguin Daily News.

Unruh says they want patients to feel comfortable with their decision to be treated at GRMC. She says this hopefully helps to provide some assurances that they will be well cared for here in Seguin.

“This is just one measure for us to showcase the great work that is being done here at Guadalupe Regional so please look at this information and use this when you are making your healthcare decisions and choosing who you would like to go to to be your healthcare provider of choice,” said Unruh.

Texas Lutheran forward Luis Green named to SCAC’s 30th Anniversary Team (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran’s record-setting forward Luis Green has been named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s 30th Anniversary Team for Men’s Soccer.

Green, one of just two current student-athletes on the all-anniversary team, has exploded onto the scene in two seasons at the collegiate level.

The 2018 SCAC Newcomer of the Year, Green also was named SCAC Offensive Player of the Year in both 2018 and 2019.

Since the award began in 2003, Green is one of just two athletes to earn the distinction of SCAC Offensive Player of the Year in back-toback seasons.

Through his first two seasons, Green has scored 38 goals (18 in 2018, 20 in 2019) and assisted on five others for 81 points. He led the SCAC in points, points per game, goals and goals scored per game in both his freshman sits fifth all-time. and sophomore seasons.

Bonnye was born on March 13, 1949 in Seguin, Texas to Ima Gene (Schnitz) and John Henry Davenport.

Bonnye loved her Lord and Savior and worshipped many years at First Baptist Church in Nixon and later at Lifegate Church in Seguin.

Her parents preceded her in death. Survivors include several loving cousins and many friends throughout Seguin, Nixon and Dewville.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 9 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert K. Odom officiating. Interment will follow in the Dewville Cemetery in Dewville, Texas.

All CDC protocols must be followed including limited seating, social distancing and face coverings worn at all locations. The family appreciates the longtime care and friendships of everyone at Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center whom loved and supported her. Bonnye is now one of our Guardian Angels looking over us. Donald Wayne Reneau, age 80, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on December 21, 2020, with his wife and children by his side.

Most important to Don was his family, who loved and admired his wit, patience, and kindness. He possessed a wry sense of humor and could instantly deliver funny comments with a twinkle in his eye.

He was born on December 18, 1940 in Guadalupe County, Texas, to Elmer Moore Reneau and Lucille Phillips Reneau.

Papa Don’s grandkids, ages 7 to 25, appreciated his generosity with time. Whether participating in school sessions, supporting the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas, attending sporting events, or teaching them to feed the deer who inhabited their backyard, his grandkids knew Don as a truly good man who always put others before himself.

Don grew up on farms south of Seguin, where he developed a strong work ethic and attended 2 and 3-room schools. After graduating from La Vernia High School at age 17, he moved to San Antonio to attend bookkeeping school.

Later while working as a shipping clerk and serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, Donald enrolled in night classes at San Antonio College. On a rare evening out, he met the love of his life, Carolyn, on the dance floor of Gruene Hall. They married, bought a house, and had two children.

Donald ultimately graduated from St. Mary’s University with a degree in accounting at age 27, eight years after starting night school.

Don worked in public accounting, serving as Comptroller for real estate developer Quincy Lee and then as President and part owner of RC Management, Inc., A position he held until retiring at age 79.

He was active in several trade associations, serving twice as President of the San Antonio Apartment Association, as an officer of the Texas Apartment Association, a board member of the National Apartment Association, and President of the Institute for Real Estate Management.

Don was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoyed Spurs games, and found himself a sudden fan of Texas A&M when his kids became Aggies. He loved shopping at Sam’s Club, was annoyingly good at Trivial Pursuit, and thought Die Hard was the best action movie of all time.

He jogged every morning until a fall from a ladder forced him to take up walking instead. Don was a staple in his neighborhood, known for rising each morning at 4am to walk seven miles with a large

Donald is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Pat Stolinski.

Santos Rios Guerrero, age 78 of Seguin, was a beautiful, compassionate, servant of our Lord Jesus Christ went home to Heaven on Friday, January 1, 2021.

Santos was born in Seguin, Texas on April 1, 1942 to the late Rudolfo Rios, Sr. and Andrea Perez Rios.

Santos was a God-fearing woman who loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus, loved God’s Word and she adored her family with all of her heart. She set an example for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will lead them all

of their lives.

Although she was humble, she was also a powerful prayer warrior and Heaven knows what a wonderful and eternal impact all her many years of faithful praying have had on her family, friends, and the world.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years and her forever love, Armando Guerrero, Sr., son, Danny Guerrero, sister, Luisa Serrato and her brothers, Augustine Rios and Juan Rios.

She is survived by her sisters, Eva Rivera and Sylvia Rios; brothers, Rudolfo “Rudy” Rios and Domingo Rios; children, Gloria Galvan, Armando Guerrero Jr., Sandra Martin, Johnny Guerrero and Annette Guerrero; grandchildren, Daniel Ybarra, Jennifer Rosemark, Stephanie Guerrero, Nic Guerrero, Tanya Hernandez, Armando Guerrero III, Andre Guerrero, Augustine Guerrero, David Cardenas, Jeremy Cardenas, Junell Avalos, Kayla Nazario, Amanda Torrez, Xristian Flota and Aa’ Ralyn Valdez; 16 great-grandchildren; as well and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends.

Although the world seems a little darker without her here, we can rejoice in the fact that Santos is now in her Heavenly home with her Savior and her one true love.

The family would like to say a special thanks to her daughter-in-law, Flora Guerrero and Cindy with Guadalupe Reginal Medical Center Hospice for all of their loving and attentive care for Santos. Visitation will begin on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary with Pastor Tim Zapata and Pastor Rob Wisdom officiating. Interment will follow at Santo Tomas Cemetery.

COVID Hospitalizations Set Another Record (Undated) -- Coronavirus hospitalizations in the U.S. continue to reach new heights.

The COVID Tracking Project says more than 132-thousand Americans were getting treatment for the virus in hospitals as of Wednesday, the most of the pandemic. That includes over 23-thousand-700 people fighting in ICUs. It is the 36th-straight day hospitalizations have stayed above 100-thousand. The Project also noted Wednesday saw the second-highest daily death toll of the pandemic with nearly 38-hundred reported.

Mass Vaccinations Sites Pop Up Across U.S. (Undated) -- Dozens of mass COVID-19 vaccination sites are popping up across the country as officials look to make the shot more available to Americans. Colorado, Texas, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania are among just some of the states working to open facilities, aimed at speeding up vaccine distribution efforts. Officials in New York City are also preparing to set up five of the centers, with at least one in each of the five boroughs. This comes as a series of delays have been reported in vaccination efforts across the country.

Trump Administration Provides Update on COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution (Washington, DC) -- The Trump Administration says they have delivered 20-million doses of coronavirus vaccine to all 50 states and U.S. territories. Speaking with reporters, Health Secretary Alex Azar urged states to move as quickly as possible rather than leave vaccines sitting in freezers. This comes as CDC data shows about 70-percent of all doses delivered are sitting on pharmacy shelves waiting to be administered. Azar suggested that states accelerate their vaccine administration by moving on to broader populations right now.

CDC Forecast Shows Up To 438K COVID Deaths By Jan. 30 (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is projecting over 400-thousand COVID-related deaths in the U.S. before the calendar turns to February. The agency released its updated ensemble forecast on Wednesday, predicting between 405-thousand and 438-thousand deaths by January 30th. The Johns Hopkins University tally shows the U.S. death toll already over 361-thousand. That’s by far the highest in the world, as no other country has yet to reach 200-thousand.

Sandra spent her childhood in Beeville, Texas where she and her sister, Dorothy, have many fond memories and quite a few antics! She moved back to San Antonio and graduated from Providence High School. She married her sweetheart on December 26, 1955 and they raised 3 sons and a daughter. The family was very active at St. Luke’s Catholic Church where they made lifelong friends and memories.

After many great years in San Antonio, they moved to Seguin and continued their adventure.

Sandra was very active in St. James Catholic Church being a member of St. Ann’s Circle and Catholic Daughters. She loved playing bridge and was a member of several clubs in San Antonio and Seguin. Sandra also spent many fun hours with her beloved lunch bunch. Throughout her adult life, Sandra spent countless hours involved in many charitable endeavors.

Mamer or Momo, to her grandchildren, was always up for adventure. Though not a stereotypical grandmother, her fun loving, life Sandra Rehm Barron, age living spirit made for one special “Mamer/ 84, passed away December Momo.” Sandra was full of life, fun and was 30, 2020. Sandra was born incredibly witty!

September 14, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas to Leona Sandra and Carroll loved to travel and were Margarite (Striedel) Rehm and always planning their next trip. From South America to Alaska, many cruise ships and tours Cyril Jacob Rehm Sr. through the U.S. and around the world, they were Sandra is preceded in death able to explore many places.

Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Beicker and husband, Donny and son, Russell Erxleben.

Her grandchildren that affectionately called her “Ma” are Brent Beicker and wife, Katie; Clint Beicker and wife, Amy; Russell Erxleben II, Lauren Erxleben, Ryan Erxleben, and Erin Erxleben.

“Ma’s” great-grandchildren are Brinley Beicker, Brylen Beicker, Bliss Beicker, Bowen Beicker, and Brooke Beicker. Her surviving sister-in-law is Bernice Neumann.
